ANARA’s POV

"Seraphis! Seraphis!" I called; my heart was throbbing, and I could hear it beat so loudly in my head.

I couldn't afford to lose her; she wanted me to run away, but to where exactly? Where was I supposed to go? I have basically lived my life hidden, as a maid. I've barely seen the pack at large. Where was I supposed to run?

"Seraphis, if you can hear me, I really need you," I called to her again. Tears started to fall freely as I said, huddled up on the cold floor. I hit my chest repeatedly, hoping the

throbbing pain would stop, but it didn't. I was just rejected by my mate, and now my only companion won't respond to me.

"Run Ana, you're in danger; leave the Nightveil pack!" This warning echoed and I sprang up, immediately wiping my tears and grabbing whatever tangible thing I owned and shoving it into a dusty old sack at the corner of the room. I owned absolutely nothing, so packing took less time than I predicted.

My eyes welled with sadness and grief. I grabbed the bag and placed it over my shoulder, softly opening the door so I wouldn't make any noise that might lead me to getting caught. As I followed the path with my eyes on the floor, a shadow was cast over me.

at once, robbing me of whatever little light the tiny bulbs in my room brought me from.

“And where are you going, witch?” lyra screamed, and I fell to the ground. The beat of my heart instantly tripled.

"I don't think that's any of your business." I whispered (it was the first time I'd ever spoken to her or anyone with that much courage), never said them with that much courage before. I was really proud of my undetectable source of bravery.

I scrambled back to my feet and I staggered for a few seconds from how weak my legs where and the pain on my head. Our drooping eyes locked with her fiery ones; she was probably going to kill me once and for all.

"You are rather taken with forgetting your place," she sneered, keeping just the right amount of distance between us. "What gave you the impression that you could talk to me like that?"

I remained silent, not knowing what to say next. I just wanted to get out of there before the guards came looking for their perfect, pretty princess.

“Out of my way Lyra!” I snorted, and she giggled, her eyes wide in disbelief, completely taken aback by my brazenness.

"After attempting to steal my mate?" She began to close the distance between us. My fists and jaw tightened at the mention

of the word "my mate." The only thing I could call my own was taken away, and I couldn't do anything about it.

I was running out of patience; I had to get away from the pack. I tried calling Seraphis again, but there was still no response.

"So you finally got your wolf, huh?" She paced.

"At least something good can come out of your existence," she announced. Normally, I would be pained by her choice of words, but I've heard those harsh words too many times to be bothered.

"You don't need me; you don't care if I live or die, so why not just let me leave and be out of your life completely?"

"I swear by the moon goddess and the guardians above, if you dare as much as step out that door, there would be bloodshed, and it would be yours!" She roared, her eyes glistening in the poor lighting. Shivers ran down my spine as I saw her mischievous smile.

"Do you think our parents would be happy

with that?"

"Brave of you to assume that they are still your parents. After killing mom with your witchcraft? She couldn't care less about whether you live or die, and I'm sure dad has always despised you," she smirked.

My eyes watered, and soon it was a show of tears; I couldn't hold it in. My mom was the most precious thing to me; she was the only one who actually cared for me. Being accused of murdering her caused unexplainable pain.

"You would become a murderer," I sniffed.

"Well, let's see who they believe—a dead, unwanted, miserable pauper or the harmless, gentle princess." She smiled,

and I shook my head as more tears fell. I could never win against her—maybe not in this world.

There was no need to stand there going back and forth with her. I took a deep breath and narrowed my eyes. She rapped on about how irrelevant I was. When I saw the chance, I seized it and bolted.

I ran like my life depended on it; in fact, it did. My heart was racing, and the growl I heard behind me made my heart drop into my stomach.

"She turned into her wolf just to catch me? Why???" I thought as I ran.

I didn't stop running out of the house into the fields; there was no one in sight, and

that gave me an advantage. I kept running as fast as my legs could carry me, increasing my speed whenever it looked like she was catching up to me.

I was completely out of breath by the time I got to the border, but I couldn't stop; she was still following me. Why did she want me to stay so bad?

Out of panic, I ran into the border of the neighbouring country. Immediately, she halted; there was no use following me into the neighbouring country and endangering herself.

I watched her retreat, and as she did, my body began to give in to the bruises and the blood loss from all the injuries I

sustained from running. My heavy eyes began to close, and I fell to the ground.

Embracing the solace I found in the darkness.

I thought I had died, but the flickering light over my head brought me back to reality. My vision zoomed in and out of focus, and I swear, I thought I was dreaming when they finally gained clarity. It was the most luxurious room I'd ever seen.

KaelenThe report came on a Tuesday and I read it three times before I put it down. Then I put it face down on the desk and looked at the wall for sixty seconds precisely and then I picked it up and read it a fourth time because the fourth time it said the same thing as the first three and that meant it was real.A man matching Eran Draven's description. Working under a false name in an administrative capacity. Located within Riven Nightfall's outer council structure in Duskbane. Confirmed by two independent sources, one of whom had served in Virelith during Eran's time here and had recognized him at a Duskbane territorial function three months ago.My brother had been in Duskbane for at least six months.Possibly longer.Working within the council of the man I had nearly gone to war with. Offering intelligence, possibly. Building a life, certainly. Existing in a territory thirty miles from my own for months while I sat in my office and conducted my council meetings and marked my mate

Anara"His name was Eran," Liora said, and then immediately pressed her lips together and moved the vase she had been dusting to a different location on the shelf for no reason that had anything to do with dusting."Liora," I said."You should ask Kaelen," she said."I'm asking you.""I know you are," she said. "And I'm telling you that I know enough to know it's not mine to tell." She picked up her cloth. "Ask Kaelen."I looked at the portrait. The man in it was younger than Kaelen, mid to late thirties in the portrait's estimation, with the same basic architecture of face and body that clearly came from the same origin point. Tall, broad-shouldered, the jaw similar though the arrangement of the eyes was different. He was not smiling. Pack portraits did not permit smiling. But there was something in the set of his mouth that suggested he had been amused by something in the minutes before the portrait was taken and was working with only moderate success to conceal it.I found Kaelen i

AnaraThe letter was thinner than the others.I noticed before I opened it. Lyra's previous letters had been careful and deliberate, the handwriting controlled in the specific way of someone choosing each word before committing it to paper. This envelope was lighter and the handwriting on the outside was slightly less precise and I opened it standing at the correspondence table rather than taking it somewhere to sit.Three paragraphs. The first said the power had surged two nights ago during a storm. She had gone to sleep in a quiet room and woken at three in the morning to find her windows standing open and three of the household staff standing motionless in the corridor outside her door, their eyes fixed and blank. She had not known she was doing it. She had been entirely asleep. The second paragraph said she had sat with this information for two full days before writing. That she had considered not writing at all and had decided against that specifically because not writing was the

Anara"You are not ready," Seraphis said, approximately forty seconds before I walked through the door."I know," I said. "I'm going anyway."The great hall was full in a way I had not seen it since the Luna selection, but this fullness was different in quality. The selection had been curated and staged, participants and guests and elders performing their respective roles. This was the whole pack. Every family from the outer settlements who had come in for the gathering, every rank from the senior warriors who had stood on the northern battlefield to the children sitting cross-legged at the front because Kaelen had learned years ago that children at the front were less disruptive than children anywhere else.I stood at the side entrance and looked at the back of the crowd and felt through the pack bond the collective weight of several hundred people's attention already oriented toward the front of the hall where I was about to stand."Ready," Kaelen said beside me. Not a question. A s

AnaraThe bond woke me before the moon was fully up.Not gently. A wave of something that hit me across the chest from the inside and sat me upright in bed before my eyes were properly open, my hand pressed flat to my sternum against the impact of it. Not my pain. His. Coming through the bond the way heat came through a wall, unmistakable and building and not something that was going to diminish by being ignored.Kaelen was not beside me.The space where he had been was still warm and the sheets were disturbed and on the table his side of the bed his phone showed two in the morning. I was out of the room before I had made any conscious decision about it, pulling on the first thing my hands found in the dark, his shirt from the chair, moving barefoot down the corridor with the bond pulling me forward like a current.Down the back stairs. Along the lower corridor where the lamps were dimmed for the night and the pack house was breathing in its deep, night-settled way. To the room at the

KaelenHe pulled me aside before he got in the car.Not dramatically. He simply stopped at the bottom of the pack house steps and turned and looked at me with the specific expression of a man who had decided something needed to be said and had calculated that the open air of a departure was the correct location for it."She deserves someone who is reminded occasionally," he said. "That she is exceptional. That what she carries and what she does and who she is when nobody is asking anything from her are all extraordinary things." He looked at me steadily. "Someone who tells her that. Not in declarations. In the ordinary way. Consistently."I looked at him."Why are you telling me this?" I said."Because I am not your enemy," he said. "I know it has not felt that way. I know the last several months have given you reasons to read me as a threat and most of those reasons were accurate. But sitting across from you in that council room yesterday and watching you watch her and feeling the we
