Lucien POV

The iron door slammed shut as I kicked the frame into the latch. Rin backed up until his heels hit the wooden supply crates against the wall. He held his medical kit in front of his chest, his eyes wide behind his glasses.

“Sovereign,” Rin rasped, his voice high and thin. “Keep your aura down! Elevated pressure triggers stress in early Omega development!”

Kael POVThe iron door of the security room clicked shut, blocking out the cold wind in the spire corridor. I sat back on the edge of the mattress, resting my boots on the floorboards. My velvet coat hung loose over my shoulders, exposing the open collar of my silk shirt and the pale silver mark burning beneath my skin.Lucien stood in the center of the room. His broadsword rested in its sheath against the wooden table, but his shoulders stayed rigid as stone. His crimson eyes stared at my face through the dim yellow light of the lantern.“You thought I would lock you in a cellar,” Lucien said. His rough voice was quiet, lacking its usual harsh edge.“You would have,” I replied, pulling my knees up toward my chest. “You almost threw Rin out the window three hours ago when my blood pressure dropped.”Lucien did not answer right away. He took two slow steps toward the bed, his boots making no sound against the floorboards.“I was terrified, Kael,” Lucien growled softly, stopping right a

White frost spread across the stone floorboards, crawling up the legs of the wooden table.“Get out, doctor,” I growled, my crimson eyes burning in the dim light.“Lucien, do not yell at him,” Kael said, sitting up on the cot.I turned my head. My gaze locked onto Kael’s face. He had pulled his velvet coat tight over his stomach, his knuckles white as he held the fabric closed.“I said get out, Rin,” I repeated, my voice shaking the steel wall frames.Rin did not wait for a third order. He threw open the door, scrambled into the outer hall

Lucien POVThe iron door of the briefing room clicked shut as Julian stepped into the hallway.Kael sat in my lap on the wooden bench, his boots resting on the floorboards. His cheek leaned against my shoulder armor. Sweat dampened the dark hair at his forehead, and his breath came in slow, heavy hitches against my collar.I kept my left arm locked around his waist, holding him flush against my chest."I need to get my pistol, Vale," Kael murmured, his hand resting on my forearm."Sit still," I growled softly, my red eyes watching his pale cheekbones. "Your heart is beating like a trapped bird.""I am fine," Kael rasped, trying to push himself up. "I just need water.""You are not fine," I said.I shifted my right palm. My fingers spread over his heavy velvet coat, moving down past his belt line to check his core temperature. The skin beneath his clothes felt hot, almost burning through the thick fabric. Then, a sudden vibration hit my palm.***I froze completely. My hand stayed flat

Kael POVA heavy iron map slammed onto the wooden briefing table, scattering grey dust across the paper layouts. I stood at the table’s edge, my left hand gripping the wooden rim so hard my knuckles turned white. Cold sweat ran down the back of my neck. My throat felt like dry sand, but I forced my eyes to stay focused on the red line Mara was drawing across Sector Zero.“Vane locked the upper glass dome from inside,” Mara said, tapping her finger against the paper. “He has two automated turrets left on the inner rail. If we push through the main stairs, we walk straight into a crossfire.”“We do not use the main stairs,” Lucien growled from my right elbow. His broad shadow covered half the table. He stood so close his navy velvet sleeve brushed my arm every time he moved. His cold cedar scent was heavy, thick, and protective in the small briefing room.“There is an old air vent behind the elevator core,” I said, my voice sounding flat and distant in my own ears. “It leads straight in

Kael POVA cold wind blew down the long stairwell of the spire, but my skin burned hot under my heavy coat. My knees gave out three steps before the top landing. I caught myself on the iron handrail, my palm leaving a wet smear of sweat against the cold metal. The silver mark on my collarbone throbbed in fast, heavy pulses, radiating a wave of exhaustion straight down to my waist.“Kael!” Rin yelled, catching my elbow before I hit the stone floor.“I am fine,” I rasped, though my voice sounded paper-thin.Lucien was beside me in a split second, his broad chest blocking the draft from the open lift shaft. His red eyes scanned my face, his jaw tight as stone. “You are not fine.”“The core drain from the lower clinic is hitting him all at once,” Rin said, checking his scanner screen with a quick tap of his thumb. “He used too much aura without rest. He needs to lie down for an hour, or his body will shut down completely.”“Vane is on the top deck,” I muttered, trying to push off the rail

Kael POVA cold drop of water hit my nose. I opened my eyes, and the damp ceiling of the Sump clinic backroom replaced the field of white flowers. The smell of wet sulfur and old iron flooded my senses again. Down the hall, the quiet hum of water pipes rattled the floorboards.Lucien was still sitting on the edge of my cot. His heavy hand rested over my knuckles, and his red eyes fixed on my face with a dark, quiet intensity.“You dropped off,” Lucien said, his thumb rubbing over my inner wrist.“I saw the field outside Old Sector One,” I rasped, sitting up slowly against the brick wall. “Before the Citadel fell.”Lucien went still. His long dark lashes lowered slightly as he looked down at our joined hands. “You remember the lilies?”“I remember the sun,” I said, a faint scoff escaping my throat. “I forgot what real sunlight felt like until just now.”“It was real,” Lucien growled low in his chest. “We sat there for three hours while the Council stewards searched the stables for you
