Prologue

Laura Anthony

—It's our turn Simon! — I squirmed and made impressive moves, trying to get my game partner to get the answer right, but he seemed to get more and more confused.

— Gosh, Laura! Give a hint! His eyes looked at me pleadingly. I knew he wanted the code.

—Simon can't talk, little cousin! — Matheus' voice was mocking.

Matheus was the son of my mother's only brother. I was fifteen. Our friendship only grew since our best friend arrived at the Barra da Tijuca condominium, where we lived. Simon had moved to Rio de Janeiro with his parents when he was just five years old. Since then, the three of us have not been apart. But the harmony between Simon and I was unique, and we always got together to make Matheus a muggle. And it was with this intention that I asked for a break to eat something. It was the opportunity to speak the secret code and finish this game once and for all.

— Thank God! I thought you would never be hungry. I'll bring the lunch in a minute.

Marta, the maid at my uncle's house, always participated in the games as Matheus' partner. That's because Simon and I were never apart. We were the perfect duo.

— You're taking a while to find out this time, aren't you Simon? — If you make a mistake, Marta and I will win. For the first time in a hundred years, I can't even believe it. — Matheus sighed looking up as if to say thanks.

— Laura decided to get tough, but I always figure you out, baby! Simon concluded, giving me a knowing look. It was the cue for me to speak the code.

— Well, friend ! Never fall in love , never love! I announced in the most angelic voice possible and watched as Marta frowned, placing the delicacies on the table.

—Don't worry, Laura! We will never fall in love. The three of us are going to travel the world, enjoy life and make a lot of money. Simon singing, you being his manager and me his bodyguard. What do you think?

—Our! Do you already have everything planned? The parents of you who are not going to be pleased to know that their children do not intend to give them grandchildren. Martha rolled her eyes, probably thinking my cousin's plan was too fanciful.

— There's no more room for anyone in this trio, my dear Martita ! It's just the three of us. Forever.

I felt a lump in my throat. The phrase —it's just the three of us— caused me mixed feelings. It wasn't the fact that we spent our lives together that bothered me, after all, it was them I wanted to be with forever. What caused me that discomfort was Matheus saying that we were immune to love. Did Simon feel the same way? Would he ever fall in love with any girl, or rather me? I was eleven years old and I loved him forever. Loved those deep eyes, the way he laughed and ran his hand through his hair, in a back and forth motion. I wanted to marry and have children with him. Three children. First a boy to cheer for Flamengo and go to the stadiums with uncle Matheus. Then two girls, twins, for me to dress in the same clothes and parade around with them. I wanted a family with Simon. And I wanted Matheus to always be part of it. But it seems our plans were different, as my youthful crush agreed with everything my cousin said.

— Let's finish this game soon — Matheus said, drinking the last sip of the soda.

I returned to my prominent place, under the plush rug, while everyone arranged themselves on the couch. I started the movements just to disguise. My partner already knew the answer. Simon watched me for some time and after a few seconds of suspense he shouted.
