Chapter 2

Author: Tonya Hugh
I had watched that familiar face mature from boyhood into adulthood.

Robert became my bodyguard when he was still very young. Back then, he was thin, small, and quiet.

On the other hand, I loved noise and excitement. I always teased him on purpose. In front of all my friends, I called him my best friend and declared that he was the best-looking of them all.

He would blush for no reason and stumble over his words. "Miss Beaumont is pretty too."

"Beautiful."

He would secretly sneak out to compete in underground boxing matches, all to earn enough money to buy me a dress.

He was always at my side, and he would quietly mutter to himself, "Miss Beaumont. My little sun."

He was like my shadow. Aside from me, almost no one could persuade him to do anything.

The year I turned 16, enemies of my family kidnapped me.

In an abandoned warehouse, those people closed in on me. I was so terrified that I broke down completely, unable even to scream.

But Robert's arms reached me before the police did. He grunted as he lifted me into his arms. His steps never faltered.

After that, he vanished for a month. He spent that entire month in the ICU.

A scar stretched from his left ribs all the way to his right side.

The day I woke up, I burst into tears and threw myself into his arms.

He held me, as steady as ever. "Don't cry. You won't look pretty if you cry until your eyes are swollen."

I secretly kissed him.

That night, he took my hand and told me I had to take responsibility for him.

We began dating in secret.

My mother tried again and again to put a stop to our relationship. But Robert would rather endure a beating from my family than give me up.

Afterward, people in our social circle began calling him the god of pure devotion.

For the next decade and more, our love story became one that everyone loved to retell.

Later, my mother fell gravely ill and was hospitalized. Her life hung by a thread.

Robert took care of everything himself and barely slept. With red-rimmed eyes, he knelt beside her hospital bed and made a solemn vow. "Mrs. Beaumont, I will treat her well for the rest of her life. As long as I have a sip of soup, she will have a bite of meat. You are as good as my own mother. Leave her to me. You can rest easy."

Just before she drew her last breath, my mother nodded and gripped his hand. "Robb, she is my only daughter. Never... mistreat her. She... has no one else left."

Robert swore on his own life that he would treasure me for the rest of his days. He promised to ensure that I would always live above everyone else.

And at the time, he truly kept that promise.

After he took over the company, he barely allowed himself any rest. He tirelessly pursued clients and sought new investments. Under his leadership, the Beaumont Group grew bigger and stronger at a pace that exceeded everyone's expectations.

At the end of that year, he gave me a wedding that seemed to capture the attention of the entire world.

The moment he turned to face me, his voice caught in his throat and his eyes reddened.

He kissed me with such care, as if I were something fragile that might break. "Thank you for giving me a home. For the rest of our lives, neither of us will ever let go, not even in death."

We built a happy little family together, and Robert doted on me endlessly. He even hired a nanny just to take care of things for me.

Her name was Amelia Green. She came from the countryside and wore coarse clothes. Her skin was dark from years under the sun, and she had little education. But she knew how to cook the country dishes I loved.

Robert paid a fortune to poach her from her previous employer.

I laughed and called him foolish, but he merely shook his head and cupped my face in his hands. "As long as it's something you like, I'd gladly give my life for it. Just never leave me."

Amelia was a good cook, but her good intentions often led to trouble. She would offer to tidy my belongings, only to accidentally stain my clothes. She would clean the liquor cabinet, only to fumble and shatter a bottle of fine wine. She would shut down Robert's computer and accidentally delete important files.

More than once, Robert grew so angry that he wanted to dismiss her. She only managed to keep her job because I felt sorry for her.

He constantly grumbled that I never doted on him half as much as I did on Amelia. But for my sake, he continued to treat her kindly.

What I never expected was that she would ultimately be the one who stayed while I would become the outsider.

I donated it all to an orphanage. After that, the days passed in silence. In a moment of hazy consciousness, I thought I saw my mother. She had come to take me home."Mom..."Robert gripped my hand. When I woke again, the sun was already sinking low, and everything outside the window had turned a deep orange.Online, talk of Robert and Amelia was circulating again, along with even more explicit photos. Someone had sent them directly to me, anonymously.[They look so happy together. They're the ones who actually look like a real couple. A hundred times more relaxed than when he's with you in bed.]There was a video attached as well. I opened it without the slightest reaction. In truth, it was no different from what I had already seen.Robert burst into the room while the audio from the video still played. "Jessie! Don't look at that!"He snatched the phone from my hand and tried to shut it off, but he couldn't. In the end, he hurled it out the window."Don't look. I'll take care of this. Please..." His voice was full of desperation.I gave a faint sound of acknowledgment, hardly caring one way or the other. He climbed onto the bed and wrapped his arms around me, repeating t

Robert stumbled backward and gripped the wall tightly, as if his legs could no longer support him. "Back then, it was already... It could have been treated, right? There was still a chance to treat it back then. Why didn't you tell me?"Yes. It could have been treated. But I hadn't wanted treatment. I hadn't wanted to hear him spit venom at me anymore. I hadn't wanted to hear my own child urge me to die. Also, I had missed my mother. He lunged forward and wrapped his arms around me. "It's all right. It's all right. You'll get better."…My mind slowly began to unravel. My condition deteriorated rapidly.Nearly out of his mind, Robert flew me from one hospital to another, both across the country and abroad. He sought out the best hospitals and the finest doctors.Unfortunately, the results were nearly identical every time.He broke down in tears in the hospital hallways. Every doctor and nurse praised him as a devoted husband.I could only find it bitterly ironic. How wonderful

Over the past few years, I had wondered again and again whether I had committed some unforgivable sin to deserve such a fate. But I had done nothing wrong. Everyone had always praised me as a good child.I did not dare close my eyes. I was afraid they would still be trying to kill me in my dreams. The next morning, I went to the cemetery and bought the plot beside my mother's grave. I bent down and wiped her headstone clean. But the more I wiped, the blurrier it became. My voice trembled as I choked out, "Mom, I miss you so much. Wait for me. It won't be long now."Was she crying somewhere up in heaven, too? Did she regret entrusting me to him?My mother had been sharp and decisive at the company, but she reserved her gentlest side for me alone. She always held me close."Be good, sweetheart. Nothing but good days lie ahead for my little girl. Stay with Mom, and you'll live happily for the rest of your life."Unfortunately, those good days never came, and she had left me far to

I could not help but feel a little dazed.I could not remember the last time Robert had called me that. I did not even know when it had started, but the way he addressed me had gradually changed into something else entirely: madwoman, jealous shrew, and lunatic. He took off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders. Then he ushered me into the car and insisted on driving me home.Once inside, he looked around the room, his hand still firmly clasped around my wrist. "You live here? Why won't you come find me? Would you really rather stay here and live like this? Or are you just trying to spite me?"You know perfectly well I could never bear to..."I took a careful step back, subtle enough that he would not notice, and met his eyes without flinching. "No. I'm doing fine."He pressed his lips together and backed me into a corner. "Fine? What about any of this is fine? Your deformed fingers? Or this miserable little life?"Jessie, we both know you're not fine at all. Do you really

Robert gave me no money, so I could not even afford to go to the hospital.I had no idea how many days I lay there at home. Then the child came. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.He stood before me with a glass of water in his hand. His eyes remained lowered. "Mom... Mom."I thought I had imagined it.He held out the glass. "Drink this."I trusted him without a moment's hesitation. I drank it eagerly, down to the very last drop.I pulled him into my arms."Andy..." My voice trembled and caught in my throat. "Say it again..."His entire body went rigid. Then something began to feel terribly wrong with my body. Only then did I realize the water had been poisoned.Just as I lost the ability to breathe, he shoved me away with all his strength and ran. "Hmph! You're so easy to fool.
