Chapter 1

That wasn't true, actually.

I touched my deformed fingers. Whenever the weather turned gray and rainy, the aching pain kept me awake all night.

In the past, I might have clung to him and whined for attention. I would have burrowed into his arms and pestered him until he made me smile.

But I wouldn't do that anymore. After all, a person couldn't keep humiliating herself by clinging to someone forever.

Robert merely let out a soft sigh. "Jessie, you shouldn't lie. You used to be so afraid of pain."

I lowered my eyes to conceal my emotions. "You said it yourself. That was before."

He looked somewhat helpless as he reached for my hand, just as he used to.

Andrew Green lunged at me and shoved me backward, his fist striking the scar on my stomach. "Bad lady! Daddy's not allowed to touch her! I'm going home to tell Mommy!"

A faint ache still lingered there. That was where he had once been born.

"Go away! This is all your fault! If it weren't for you, Daddy wouldn't be angry at Mommy! Mommy hates you! You're not allowed to seduce Daddy! All her stuff is dirty and smelly. Let her starve!"

He snatched the scissors off the table and charged at me again.

"Andy! Stop that!" Robert grabbed him, his voice stern for the first time. "Apologize."

He glared at me defiantly, as if he were ready to attack me again at any moment. "No, I won't! If it weren't for her, Mommy wouldn't be crying at home. It's all her fault!"

I looked at his small face, which bore such a striking resemblance to mine.

Surprisingly, I felt nothing in particular. If anything, I found it rather amusing.

Robert's expression darkened as he dragged the boy in front of me and tried to force him to call me Mom.

The boy clenched his little fists, his face full of defiance. "No! She's not my mom! My mom is gentler than her, and prettier too! She's not old and ugly like her! She should just die! Then Mommy Ames would be happy!"

"Andy!" Robert's hand trembled as he tightened his grip on the boy.

I calmly intervened to smooth things over. "He's just a child. There's no need to force him. A name is just a label anyway."

"I don't want your fake kindness!" Andrew shoved me away with all his might and cried into his kids' smartwatch.

Robert abruptly froze.

When he turned back to me, his expression was complicated. "Jessie, Andy is..." He rubbed his brow wearily. "Never mind. What time do you get off work? I'll take you home."

"No need." I deliberately put some distance between us and bent down to clean up the mess. "Your wife is probably still waiting for you at home."

The store manager emerged from the back and gave me a contemptuous kick before she plastered a fake smile on her face. "Oh, Mr. Mason is here. We've got quite a few new arrivals. Are you looking to pick something out for your wife?

"The dress you ordered last time is ready too. Why don't you take a look?

"We're short-staffed, so we had to hire someone clumsy like her. If you're unhappy with her, I'll kick her out right now."

Robert said nothing. He simply stared at me, perhaps waiting for me to defend myself.

Unfortunately, he was bound to be disappointed. I remained silent and simply carried on with my work.

After a long moment, he spoke in a hoarse voice. "No need. She's fine."

The store manager laughed. "Mr. Mason, you're too kind. This one's got sticky fingers. I wouldn't even want her working here.

"Last time, Mrs. Mason even said she stole a necklace. I guess poverty has driven her mad."

As she spoke, she cast me another glance, as though she were doing me a favor. "Since Mr. Mason has spoken up for you, you can keep your job."

I gave a quiet acknowledgment, completely unmoved.

Robert suddenly seized my wrist and stepped closer. "Jessica, say something."

When I remained silent, his voice grew sharper. "Open your mouth. Defend yourself. Where did all your old pride go? Argue with her. Tell her you didn't do it."

I smiled faintly as I pulled my hand free. "She's not wrong. I did it."

The store manager suddenly sensed that something was amiss. "Mr. Mason... do you know her?"

"I—"

"I don't." I raised my head and met his gaze evenly. "Mr. Mason and I are complete strangers."

After all, he was the reason I had ended up like this.

After that day, the two of them finally seemed to calm down. They stopped fighting.I could no longer walk and spent my days in bed, watching the sun rise and set. Even the simple act of breathing was painful.Andrew would sneak in to kiss me, pressing his lips against my old scar.Robert dug out our marriage certificate from years ago and wrote down the entire story of what had happened between us in his own words. He laid everything bare, from beginning to end, and admitted to every wrong he had committed. He dealt with Amelia once and for all. I did not know whether she was still alive, but I no longer had the strength to care.He sold the company and gave me every cent. I donated it all to an orphanage. After that, the days passed in silence. In a moment of hazy consciousness, I thought I saw my mother. She had come to take me home."Mom..."Robert gripped my hand. "Jessie. Miss Beaumont. Don't fall asleep. Wake up..."He seemed to have aged so much all at once.I blink

When I woke again, the sun was already sinking low, and everything outside the window had turned a deep orange.Online, talk of Robert and Amelia was circulating again, along with even more explicit photos. Someone had sent them directly to me, anonymously.[They look so happy together. They're the ones who actually look like a real couple. A hundred times more relaxed than when he's with you in bed.]There was a video attached as well. I opened it without the slightest reaction. In truth, it was no different from what I had already seen.Robert burst into the room while the audio from the video still played. "Jessie! Don't look at that!"He snatched the phone from my hand and tried to shut it off, but he couldn't. In the end, he hurled it out the window."Don't look. I'll take care of this. Please..." His voice was full of desperation.I gave a faint sound of acknowledgment, hardly caring one way or the other. He climbed onto the bed and wrapped his arms around me, repeating t

Robert stumbled backward and gripped the wall tightly, as if his legs could no longer support him. "Back then, it was already... It could have been treated, right? There was still a chance to treat it back then. Why didn't you tell me?"Yes. It could have been treated. But I hadn't wanted treatment. I hadn't wanted to hear him spit venom at me anymore. I hadn't wanted to hear my own child urge me to die. Also, I had missed my mother. He lunged forward and wrapped his arms around me. "It's all right. It's all right. You'll get better."…My mind slowly began to unravel. My condition deteriorated rapidly.Nearly out of his mind, Robert flew me from one hospital to another, both across the country and abroad. He sought out the best hospitals and the finest doctors.Unfortunately, the results were nearly identical every time.He broke down in tears in the hospital hallways. Every doctor and nurse praised him as a devoted husband.I could only find it bitterly ironic. How wonderful

  • The Bodyguard and the Nanny   Chapter 7

Over the past few years, I had wondered again and again whether I had committed some unforgivable sin to deserve such a fate. But I had done nothing wrong. Everyone had always praised me as a good child.I did not dare close my eyes. I was afraid they would still be trying to kill me in my dreams. The next morning, I went to the cemetery and bought the plot beside my mother's grave. I bent down and wiped her headstone clean. But the more I wiped, the blurrier it became. My voice trembled as I choked out, "Mom, I miss you so much. Wait for me. It won't be long now."Was she crying somewhere up in heaven, too? Did she regret entrusting me to him?My mother had been sharp and decisive at the company, but she reserved her gentlest side for me alone. She always held me close."Be good, sweetheart. Nothing but good days lie ahead for my little girl. Stay with Mom, and you'll live happily for the rest of your life."Unfortunately, those good days never came, and she had left me far to

  • The Bodyguard and the Nanny   Chapter 6

I could not help but feel a little dazed.I could not remember the last time Robert had called me that. I did not even know when it had started, but the way he addressed me had gradually changed into something else entirely: madwoman, jealous shrew, and lunatic. He took off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders. Then he ushered me into the car and insisted on driving me home.Once inside, he looked around the room, his hand still firmly clasped around my wrist. "You live here? Why won't you come find me? Would you really rather stay here and live like this? Or are you just trying to spite me?"You know perfectly well I could never bear to..."I took a careful step back, subtle enough that he would not notice, and met his eyes without flinching. "No. I'm doing fine."He pressed his lips together and backed me into a corner. "Fine? What about any of this is fine? Your deformed fingers? Or this miserable little life?"Jessie, we both know you're not fine at all. Do you really

Robert gave me no money, so I could not even afford to go to the hospital.I had no idea how many days I lay there at home. Then the child came. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.He stood before me with a glass of water in his hand. His eyes remained lowered. "Mom... Mom."I thought I had imagined it.He held out the glass. "Drink this."I trusted him without a moment's hesitation. I drank it eagerly, down to the very last drop.I pulled him into my arms."Andy..." My voice trembled and caught in my throat. "Say it again..."His entire body went rigid. Then something began to feel terribly wrong with my body. Only then did I realize the water had been poisoned.Just as I lost the ability to breathe, he shoved me away with all his strength and ran. "Hmph! You're so easy to fool. If Mommy hadn't promised me candy when I got home, I never would've called you that! So disgusting!"He never looked back.I watched him leave, without even enough strength left to breath
