Chapter 3

Author: Egg Yolk
But at that moment, Nolan appeared at the emergency hall entrance out of nowhere. Behind him followed Summer, who only had a minor scrape on her knee.

When he saw me and the motionless child in my arms, he said coldly, "There's a first-come, first-served rule for treatment. Don't you know that?

"You have no shame. If Finn were still alive and saw what kind of mother you are, he'd be ashamed of you."

He still thought the child I was holding was my supposedly dead son.

A doctor was about to rush out of the emergency room, but Summer blocked his path. "Doctor! Treat me first! My leg hurts so badly!"

The doctor glanced at her minor scrape, his anger rising. "That scratch will heal on its own if you wait a bit! Let me check on that child first! He looks seriously injured!"

But Summer and Nolan blocked the emergency room entrance like a wall. They wouldn't let me in, and they wouldn't let the doctor out. They insisted that the doctor treat Summer's wound first.

"This is your son Wyatt!" I couldn't hold back anymore and screamed at Summer.

"How can you just stand there and watch him suffer like this without getting treatment!"

Summer's eyes immediately reddened, and tears came on command. She cried to Nolan, "Look at her, Nolan! Ever since Brielle's son died, she's gone crazy. She keeps cursing my son! That child she's holding is clearly wearing her son's clothes!"

Nolan immediately berated me. "Brielle! I never thought you were this kind of malicious woman! Just because your own son died, you can't stand to see others doing well!

"Summer is so kindhearted. If she saw your son injured, she'd be the first to rush to save him! But you? You're here cursing her! What's your game?"

I cried and tried to explain, attempting to make them look at the child's face. "No! This really is Wyatt!"

Nolan was furious. He snatched the barely breathing child from my arms. Like discarding a piece of trash, he threw him onto the cold floor beside us.

I watched helplessly as Wyatt's broken body took another violent impact. The last faint rise and fall of his chest stopped completely.

Despair washed over me, and I suddenly understood. The root of all this was their mistaken belief that the child strapped to the bomb was my son.

Their real goal had been to let Finn die.

I had done everything I could for Wyatt. At this point, my conscience was clear.

I looked at Nolan calmly and said, "Let's get a divorce."

He laughed dismissively. "What nonsense are you spouting now! Hurry up and go home to reflect on yourself!"

I laughed bitterly. Since they didn't even cherish their own flesh and blood, what was I still doing here?

I turned to leave, saying over my shoulder, "My lawyer will send you the divorce papers."

"Brielle! Stop right there!" Summer called out to me.

She turned on her phone's live stream and spoke to the camera in an exaggerated, tearful voice. "Everyone! There was a preschool explosion in our city today, and we're all devastated. But this mother actually abandoned her son, who died in the explosion, and just left him here at the hospital!

"I don't know what kind of mother this woman is, to be so heartless and let her own child be thrown in a cold hospital corridor like trash!"

As she spoke, she gave a long, close-up shot of Wyatt's small, lifeless body on the floor. Then she put on an act of compassion and ran dramatically to the emergency room. She grabbed the doctor she had just blocked and tearfully begged him to save that young life.

Although the doctor was furious at her contradictory behavior, his professional duty compelled him to rush to Wyatt's side and crouch down to examine him carefully. Then he shook his head grimly.

"There's no saving him. If it had been earlier…"

Before he could finish, Nolan stepped forward, grasped his hand, and said loudly, "Thank you, doctor."

Then, without another word, he ushered the doctor back into the emergency room.

My prediction was completely accurate.36 hours after Nolan's disappearance, just as the police's high-intensity manhunt was showing signs of fatigue and everyone thought he had escaped, he finally showed his hand.He took advantage of a moment when our guard was down, when I had left Finn with my parents. He broke into their home and kidnapped our son.He called me from a burner phone, his voice sounding hoarse and unhinged, like a demon from hell."Brielle! Get to that unfinished building in the east district, the one I worked on! Come alone!"Have your cop boyfriend drop all charges against me! Or I'll make you experience losing your son all over again, for real this time!"He wanted to make his final gamble with me in the place he knew best, the place that symbolized the peak of his career. When I got the call, I didn't panic for a second. Nolan, with cold handcuffs on his wrists, sat across from Marvin. Even as a prisoner, he still tried to maintain that ridiculous pride of his."Captain Lowe, Brielle and I are married. This is just a domestic dispute." He forced a smirk."You're an outsider. Don't you think you're overstepping?"Marvin ignored the provocation and slid a document across the table."This is Brielle's medical examination report. Severe head concussion, over 20 soft tissue injuries across her body, and mild internal bleeding. Are these also part of your 'domestic dispute,' Nolan?"Nolan's face went pale for a moment.Marvin continued, "You probably don't know this, but while you were riding high and playing house with your precious Summer, Brielle was quietly managing all the businesses under her name."She funneled over 70% of the annual profits into your failing Wildfire Security Company. That's the only reason it survived to see today. Is that also a 'domestic dispute'?""I…" Nolan was completel

I sat on the couch holding Finn, feeling the tension I'd been carrying for hours finally release. But my body began trembling violently, beyond my control. It wasn't from fear. It was from the overwhelming sense of injustice and delayed terror that had been building inside me.The first thing I did was dial a number I knew by heart. The call was answered almost instantly, and a steady voice tinged with concern came through."Brielle, what happened?"It was my childhood friend, Marvin Lowe. The moment I heard his voice, the icy walls I'd built around my heart came crashing down. For the first time, my voice broke with uncontrollable tears."Marvin, it's me…"Marvin seemed to pick up on my extreme weakness and suppressed sobbing. His voice immediately tensed."Brielle, where are you right now? Are you safe? Did Nolan hurt you again?""He…" I took a deep breath, trying to keep my account clear, but my trembling voice betrayed my emotions."He and Summer… they tried to kill Finn.

The hospital entrance fell deathly silent. All the onlookers who had been riled up by Summer's livestream stared blankly at the lively child on Nolan's phone, one who was calling him "Dad". Then they stared at Summer, who had charged into the hospital like a lunatic. Their minds went completely blank.Who was that small, cold body lying in the hospital corridor? And what had that woman they'd attacked and beaten bloody actually been through? The psychiatric hospital ambulance arrived with flashing lights but no siren. Two doctors in white coats stepped out and approached Nolan, who was still in a daze. They asked routinely, "Hello, which one is the patient?"Nolan didn't answer. He looked hollow as he staggered after Summer into the emergency hall.Summer had already rushed to the small corpse. Her hands trembling, she yanked away the white sheet covering the body. The face was blown to a bloody pulp, barely recognizable, which gave her a sliver of hope. But when she pulled ba

Summer's camera turned on me again. She painted me as a vicious and incompetent woman who had lost her mind from grief and personally snuffed out her son's last chance at life.I looked at her without anger, only finding the whole thing absurd. I had told them so many times that the child was her son Wyatt, yet they refused to believe me.I shook my head and calmly turned to leave this hellhole. However, at the hospital entrance, I was surrounded by a mob of furious patients and family members. They had all watched Summer's livestream, and she'd whipped them into a frenzy. They pointed at me and hurled insults. Someone threw something at me first. Then, a hysterical woman rushed forward and grabbed my hair."That was a young life! How could you be so heartless!"Fists came at me from every direction. I lost count of how many punches and kicks I took. When I felt my organs shifting out of place and blood gushing from my mouth, the crowd finally dispersed.Nolan walked over with a
