Chapter 2

Author: Citrus Fizz
I didn't sleep a wink that night.

When I arrived at the office the next morning, everyone looked at me differently.

Someone tagged me directly in the company group chat.

[@Natasha You used him for a whole month, even made him bring you coffee, and now you're claiming you didn't recognize him? Face blindness sure is convenient.]

Tina immediately chimed in.

Tina: [If your face blindness is that bad, why was the CEO the only person you mistook for someone else? How come you've never mistaken me for the cleaning lady?]

I explained that Benedict had been wearing a temporary badge without a job title, which was why I'd assumed he was an intern.

…

At 9:30 a.m., Madison summoned me to her office.

She shut the door without offering me a seat, then slid a statement across the desk and pressed a pen firmly against the signature line. "Sign it, and the project will proceed as planned."

I glanced at the document. Its title read: [Statement of Improper Conduct During Employment]

"Just because I didn't know who he was doesn't mean I had ulterior motives for getting close to him. I'm not signing this," I said.

Madison's expression darkened. She picked up the phone and issued an order right in front of me. "Suspend Natasha's current project and freeze her system access."

She hung up and pushed the pen toward me again.

I pushed it straight back across the desk.

Madison snatched the statement away, and the corner of a quotation sheet slipped out from beneath the file.

The name Hectare Materials was printed clearly across it.

She immediately snapped the folder shut. "Administrative staff have no business prying into supply chain matters."

No sooner had she finished speaking than my phone buzzed.

A notification flashed across the screen.

[Your access has been frozen.]

The more desperately she tried to conceal it, the more firmly the name stuck in my mind.

…

That afternoon, someone posted photos on the company intranet that showed me having Benedict carry supplies, fetch my coffee, and ride the elevator with me.

I dug up the chat history from the day I'd first mistaken the department head for a courier.

I was about to forward it to the group chat when the coworker who had warned me that day sent me a message.

[Don't drag me into this.]

A second later, she deleted it.

I stopped what I was doing and immediately took screenshots of everything before she could delete anything else.

I captured her message before it disappeared from the chat history, along with the photos and accompanying insults in the group chat, then saved all the evidence to my phone.

Before I could head to HR, I stopped by the break room.

"Will you still call me Benny?" The familiar voice came from behind me.

I turned to find Benedict in the doorway, still wearing the same suit he'd worn to the gala.

"Ben—" The name slipped out instinctively, but I caught myself before I could finish.

He stepped inside and closed the door. "Why didn't you explain your face blindness properly?"

"Because no one would've believed me anyway. They'd just have another accusation to throw at me. First, I played dumb. Now, I'm faking an illness, too," I replied.

"I can explain it to them," he offered. "I was conducting a departmental assessment at the time."

"You've only just taken office. If you defend me now, everyone will assume you're covering for me."

He fell silent for a moment before asking, "I heard you wanted to help me become an official employee. Well, what if I made things official as your boyfriend instead? How does that sound?"

I froze. The cup in my hand knocked against the sink with a soft clatter.

Suddenly, the break room door swung open.

Madison stood in the doorway, her gaze shifting between Benedict and me.

Without a word, she turned and walked away.

I hurried after her but stopped when I heard her speaking on the phone around the corner.

"Send me that photo of Natasha riding in Mr. Carrington's car," she said in a low voice. "I'll hand it over to HR tomorrow."

I tightened my grip on my phone and waited until she'd hung up and left before stepping out from behind the corner.

Tina approached me and lowered her voice. "Ms. Lynch spent nearly a month preparing for that gala, just waiting for a chance to get close to Mr. Carrington. Meanwhile, you had him running errands for you for an entire month before she even got her chance. She's not going to let this go."

I stared in the direction Madison had disappeared, my fingers tightening around my phone.

She even knew I had ridden in Benedict's car, yet she had never once bothered to ask where I had actually gone that day.

…

The following day, Madison used "enforcing discipline" as a pretext to accuse me of exploiting my position to get close to upper management.

HR summoned me directly. Not only had they frozen all my system access, but they also had a photograph ready to use against me.

Those six months at the Southshire branch were the most transformative of my life.Away from the comforts of headquarters, I relied on the identification system I had developed for myself and sheer determination to get the numbers right. Through my efforts, I secured three projects worth 2,000,000 dollars each.No one at the branch knew my background. All they knew was that Miss Stark from administration never made a single error in her accounts.Throughout those six months, Benedict kept his word and never once used his authority to interfere. We lived like any ordinary long-distance couple, staying in touch through text messages and late-night phone calls.…A week before the project wrapped up, I received a black package with no return address.I peeled away layer after layer of wrapping until I uncovered an unmarked frosted-glass bottle. Beneath it lay a note: [Custom-made. One of a kind. Signed, your intern.]I pressed the spray nozzle, releasing a familiar fir-wood fragra

The day after the police took Madison away, the atmosphere on the company intranet changed completely. All the posts that had viciously attacked me were deleted, replaced by a flood of apologies and messages condemning Madison.Tina was fired on the spot, and the administration department underwent a complete overhaul. That afternoon, I ran into Tina by the elevator. She held a cardboard box in her arms, her eyes red and swollen. She glared at me with undisguised resentment. "Natasha, don't get too comfortable. Madison's locked up, and I've been fired, but everyone knows you only won because Mr. Carrington backed you. Nobody actually respects you for it."I pressed the elevator's down button and glanced at our reflections in the metal doors."I found the evidence against Madison myself. I spent the entire night putting the case file together."You rushed to take sides without even bothering to find out what really happened. You have no one but yourself to blame for getting fired.

At 2:00 p.m. that afternoon, every core member of the group's board of directors had gathered in Conference Room #1 on the top floor.Madison sat on the right side of the long conference table, her makeup flawless and her posture composed.Meanwhile, I had been summoned to face disciplinary review as an employee.Madison distributed printed copies of the photo around the table. "Members of the board, Natasha Stark's deliberate pursuit of our CEO, coupled with the chaos in her personal life, has already caused serious damage to this company's reputation."I recommend not only terminating her employment but also holding her liable for the damage to the company's reputation."As for Mr. Carrington's conduct throughout this matter, I believe his personal favoritism raises serious concerns, and I think—""You think what?" Benedict interrupted coldly from the head of the table. "Madison, before you start talking about holding anyone else liable, shouldn't you explain the unexplained 4,

Kalvin's legs gave out the moment he saw the legal team behind me and the letter of intent to sue.At first, he tried to insist that the photo had been leaked by accident. But when the legal team calmly recited the maximum penalties for defamation and commercial slander, he finally cracked. "Madison's assistant came to me first!"Kalvin scrambled for his phone. His hands shook so badly that he entered the wrong passcode twice before he finally managed to unlock it."The afternoon before yesterday, she gave me 10,000 dollars in cash at the underground parking garage across from the company, the one with the broken security cameras."But I was smart enough to make her transfer another 4,000 dollars as the remaining balance, so I'd have proof. She promised me another 20,000 dollars if I swore that the photo showed you and me checking into a hotel together."I've got the bank transfer record, screenshots of our chats, and even a recording of our entire conversation in the parking gar

The fire door to the second-floor terrace swung open, and Tina stepped inside, her expression wary and guarded."Natasha, don't try to bluff me. That photo's already all over the company. What more could I possibly know?" she demanded."If you don't know anything, then why were you swearing up and down to someone just a minute ago that this photo would ruin me for good?"I pulled out my phone, started recording, and set it on the air-conditioning unit beside us.Tina let out a derisive snort and lunged for my phone. "Recording me won't do you any good. I'm not the one who posted it!"I sidestepped her, caught her wrist, and met her gaze. "Tina, Madison promised you her supervisor position, didn't she? But think about it."Benedict might be under pressure right now, but he's still the CEO. Once he traces the IP address behind that photo, who do you think Madison will protect? You, or herself? Who do you think she'll throw under the bus?"Tina immediately stopped struggling, and h

The hostility in the conference room surged like a tide. Cameras flashed, and someone pulled out a phone to record the scene."Nothing to say?" Madison advanced toward me, one step at a time. "Natasha, how much longer are you going to keep up this act? Do I need to contact someone from your former company and have them confront you in person?"My fingernails dug into my palms as my mind buzzed with confusion.I couldn't recognize the man. The helplessness of being unable to trust my own memory was far more devastating than any insult they could throw at me. Suddenly, my vision went black.A sharp crack split the air as Benedict kicked the projector's power cord out of the outlet. Sparks flew, and the large screen instantly went dark."Mr. Carrington! What do you think you're doing?" Madison shrieked."Meeting's over."Benedict didn't even spare her a glance. He shrugged off his suit jacket and draped it over my head, shielding me from view.He wrapped an arm firmly around my sh
