Chapter 3

Author: Citrus Fizz
In the photo, I sat in the passenger seat of the black sedan, while only half of Benedict's face was visible behind the wheel.

"It was raining that day. He just gave me a ride to the subway station," I said.

"But the photo makes it look like you two were heading home together. Natasha, what gives you the right to ride in the CEO's car?" The HR supervisor's voice was cold and harsh, her eyes filled with contempt.

She continued, "This company does not tolerate employees who use such underhanded methods to climb the corporate ladder. That kind of behavior goes against our corporate culture."

I left the HR office and returned to my desk, only to feel my blood run cold.

Someone had forced open my desk drawer. My notebook, the one I relied on to cope with my face blindness, my "coworker identification notes," was soaked through with dark brown coffee.

The pages had turned to pulp. Every detail I had painstakingly recorded had dissolved into a black, coffee-stained mess that reeked of burnt coffee.

Lois dragged her right foot when she walked. Peter always cleared his throat twice. Madison kept a bottle of Chanel No. 5 on her desk. All those precious details were now lost.

I had spent three years and countless sleepless nights building that small sanctuary of security. Now, in an instant, it was gone.

For someone with severe face blindness, that notebook had been my eyes, my only means of navigating the workplace.

And now, in front of everyone, they had blinded me.

An eerie silence surrounded me.

The coworkers who usually greeted me with warm smiles now stood behind their desks, their expressions cold as they watched from a distance. A few had even discreetly raised their phones, eager to capture the spectacle.

On my computer screen, the company intranet kept updating with photos of me from behind. The comment sections were flooded with vicious accusations, with words like "calculating" and "gold digger" plastered everywhere.

I took a deep breath and fought back the tears that threatened to spill.

I gathered the ruined notebook, picked up the heavy cardboard box containing my personal belongings, and made my way through the office under the weight of everyone's contempt.

My destination was the old, windowless storage room where I had been banished.

As I reached the stairwell, Benedict approached me. He took one look at me and reached for the box, but I stepped aside before he could take it.

"Why didn't you tell me?" His brows drew together, and his gaze settled on the stained plastic bag in my hands. He could barely contain the anger in his voice.

"They froze your system access, ransacked your desk, and they're calling this a position transfer?" he demanded.

I gripped the edge of the box so tightly that my knuckles turned white.

"You've only just taken office. Do you have any idea how many people are watching your every move, waiting for something they can use against you? If you step in to help me now, you'll only confirm their suspicions that I used my connection to you to get ahead," I argued.

He refused to back down. Instead, he took another step toward me. "I can pull the security footage. I can order HR to reverse the decision right now. Natasha, I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty over this."

I raised my head to meet his gaze, my face flushed with desperation. "But I am! Benedict, I spent three years forcing myself to appear normal and working myself to the bone to build everything I have.

"I don't want all that effort reduced to some disgusting joke about a woman who slept her way to the top, just because I happen to know you. That would humiliate me far more than getting fired ever could."

He stared at me for a long moment before slowly lowering his outstretched hand. "Fine. But remember one thing. If it ever becomes too much for you to bear, you can always come to me."

…

That afternoon, Madison summoned me to the conference room and shoved a prepared company-wide apology letter across the table.

"Last chance. Admit that you used your condition as an excuse to deliberately get close to Mr. Carrington. Send this apology to the entire department, and you can still walk away with a shred of dignity."

I skimmed the letter, picked up a pen, and wrote a single statement on the back.

[I failed to recognize the CEO because of my face blindness. But I did nothing wrong, and I refuse to accept blame for something I didn't do.]

I placed the pen on the table. "Madison, if you want to fire me, follow the proper procedures. I won't confess to something I didn't do."

Madison stared at the words I had written. Then she slowly rose to her feet, tore the apology letter in half, and hurled the pieces at me.

"Fine, Natasha," she spat. "I gave you a chance, and you threw it away. I'll see you tomorrow afternoon at the compliance meeting. By the time I'm done with you, you'll understand exactly what happens to people who don't know their place in this company."

Those six months at the Southshire branch were the most transformative of my life.Away from the comforts of headquarters, I relied on the identification system I had developed for myself and sheer determination to get the numbers right. Through my efforts, I secured three projects worth 2,000,000 dollars each.No one at the branch knew my background. All they knew was that Miss Stark from administration never made a single error in her accounts.Throughout those six months, Benedict kept his word and never once used his authority to interfere. We lived like any ordinary long-distance couple, staying in touch through text messages and late-night phone calls.…A week before the project wrapped up, I received a black package with no return address.I peeled away layer after layer of wrapping until I uncovered an unmarked frosted-glass bottle. Beneath it lay a note: [Custom-made. One of a kind. Signed, your intern.]I pressed the spray nozzle, releasing a familiar fir-wood fragra

The day after the police took Madison away, the atmosphere on the company intranet changed completely. All the posts that had viciously attacked me were deleted, replaced by a flood of apologies and messages condemning Madison.Tina was fired on the spot, and the administration department underwent a complete overhaul. That afternoon, I ran into Tina by the elevator. She held a cardboard box in her arms, her eyes red and swollen. She glared at me with undisguised resentment. "Natasha, don't get too comfortable. Madison's locked up, and I've been fired, but everyone knows you only won because Mr. Carrington backed you. Nobody actually respects you for it."I pressed the elevator's down button and glanced at our reflections in the metal doors."I found the evidence against Madison myself. I spent the entire night putting the case file together."You rushed to take sides without even bothering to find out what really happened. You have no one but yourself to blame for getting fired.

At 2:00 p.m. that afternoon, every core member of the group's board of directors had gathered in Conference Room #1 on the top floor.Madison sat on the right side of the long conference table, her makeup flawless and her posture composed.Meanwhile, I had been summoned to face disciplinary review as an employee.Madison distributed printed copies of the photo around the table. "Members of the board, Natasha Stark's deliberate pursuit of our CEO, coupled with the chaos in her personal life, has already caused serious damage to this company's reputation."I recommend not only terminating her employment but also holding her liable for the damage to the company's reputation."As for Mr. Carrington's conduct throughout this matter, I believe his personal favoritism raises serious concerns, and I think—""You think what?" Benedict interrupted coldly from the head of the table. "Madison, before you start talking about holding anyone else liable, shouldn't you explain the unexplained 4,

Kalvin's legs gave out the moment he saw the legal team behind me and the letter of intent to sue.At first, he tried to insist that the photo had been leaked by accident. But when the legal team calmly recited the maximum penalties for defamation and commercial slander, he finally cracked. "Madison's assistant came to me first!"Kalvin scrambled for his phone. His hands shook so badly that he entered the wrong passcode twice before he finally managed to unlock it."The afternoon before yesterday, she gave me 10,000 dollars in cash at the underground parking garage across from the company, the one with the broken security cameras."But I was smart enough to make her transfer another 4,000 dollars as the remaining balance, so I'd have proof. She promised me another 20,000 dollars if I swore that the photo showed you and me checking into a hotel together."I've got the bank transfer record, screenshots of our chats, and even a recording of our entire conversation in the parking gar

The fire door to the second-floor terrace swung open, and Tina stepped inside, her expression wary and guarded."Natasha, don't try to bluff me. That photo's already all over the company. What more could I possibly know?" she demanded."If you don't know anything, then why were you swearing up and down to someone just a minute ago that this photo would ruin me for good?"I pulled out my phone, started recording, and set it on the air-conditioning unit beside us.Tina let out a derisive snort and lunged for my phone. "Recording me won't do you any good. I'm not the one who posted it!"I sidestepped her, caught her wrist, and met her gaze. "Tina, Madison promised you her supervisor position, didn't she? But think about it."Benedict might be under pressure right now, but he's still the CEO. Once he traces the IP address behind that photo, who do you think Madison will protect? You, or herself? Who do you think she'll throw under the bus?"Tina immediately stopped struggling, and h

The hostility in the conference room surged like a tide. Cameras flashed, and someone pulled out a phone to record the scene."Nothing to say?" Madison advanced toward me, one step at a time. "Natasha, how much longer are you going to keep up this act? Do I need to contact someone from your former company and have them confront you in person?"My fingernails dug into my palms as my mind buzzed with confusion.I couldn't recognize the man. The helplessness of being unable to trust my own memory was far more devastating than any insult they could throw at me. Suddenly, my vision went black.A sharp crack split the air as Benedict kicked the projector's power cord out of the outlet. Sparks flew, and the large screen instantly went dark."Mr. Carrington! What do you think you're doing?" Madison shrieked."Meeting's over."Benedict didn't even spare her a glance. He shrugged off his suit jacket and draped it over my head, shielding me from view.He wrapped an arm firmly around my sh
