Chapter 4

Author: Citrus Fizz
The entire administration department had gathered for the compliance meeting.

The atmosphere was so tense that even the hum of the air conditioner sounded sharp and out of place.

I sat in the center of the front row while Madison stood beside the projector screen.

Photos flashed across the screen one after another, each showing Benedict carrying supplies, pouring coffee, or getting into his car.

Madison looked down at me. "Since joining this company, Natasha's conduct has gone far beyond the scope of her duties.

"You claim to have face blindness, yet your medical declaration form on file makes no mention of any such condition.

"You used a medical condition as a shield to deceive the company and deliberately work your way into upper management. Do you have anything to say for yourself?"

I clenched my fists. "I've already requested another medical examination at the hospital. By tomorrow, we'll know whether my medical records were falsified.

"As for my work, every reception log and numerical verification I've completed is recorded in the system. I've never made a single mistake."

"System records can be altered after the fact. Photos can't be faked!" Tina shouted from the back row. "You order the CEO around like it's the most natural thing in the world, and you expect us not to question what you're really after?"

Madison slammed a Voluntary Resignation Agreement onto the table in front of me. "Sign it. Otherwise, these materials go straight to the board tomorrow, and Mr. Carrington will face an investigation alongside you because of your actions.

"Natasha, surely you don't want to tarnish his reputation by making it look as though he's covering for you, especially when he's barely settled into his position."

Her words struck me where I was most vulnerable.

I stared at the punitive agreement, took a deep breath, and picked up the pen.

The tip hovered over the paper as a thought echoed in my mind. "Natasha, don't let him get dragged down because of you."

I had barely written the first stroke of my name when the conference room door flew open.

The entire room fell silent.

Benedict strode in with an icy expression and an air of authority that seemed to cut through the tension.

Madison's expression faltered. "Mr. Carrington, this is an internal compliance review for the administration department. According to protocol, you should recuse yourself—"

"Protocol exists to establish the truth, not to force people into submission."

Benedict marched over to me, snatched the Voluntary Resignation Agreement off the table, and tore it in half before everyone's eyes. Then he tossed the pieces into the trash.

He turned to face the room, his voice firm and commanding. "You want an explanation? Fine. I'll give you one. Natasha never deliberately approached me.

"I was the one who concealed my identity from her from the very beginning. I willingly let her order me around. And if you're wondering who was pursuing whom..."

He paused, his gaze sweeping over Madison's stunned face. "I was the one pursuing her."

A collective gasp swept through the room.

Benedict turned back to me, his intense gaze fixed on mine. "If Natasha is going to resign from anything, it'll only be her position as an administrative associate.

"As for the position of Mrs. Carrington, the wife of Starhelm Group's CEO, that place has always been reserved for her."

The conference room erupted into an uproar.

I pulled my hand free of his grasp. "Benedict, you can't announce your feelings as if you're issuing a press release."

He froze. "Natasha?"

"You can help clear my name, but you don't get to decide who I am." I met his gaze and enunciated every word. "I don't need the title of CEO's wife to restore my reputation. I'm innocent, and I don't need anyone to hand me a new identity out of charity."

Madison's initial shock had already given way to a cold, twisted smile. "What a noble little performance. So righteous, so fearless in the face of power."

She struck a key on the keyboard, and the image on the projector screen changed instantly. "Natasha, you claim you're innocent? Then let everyone take a look at this!"

An old, high-resolution photograph appeared on the screen.

It was from last winter. In the photo, I was walking arm in arm with a man, our bodies close together as we entered a short-stay hotel.

Beneath the image was a line of glaring red text: [Natasha also "mistook" a married man at her previous company. Funny how her condition always seems to pick the right targets.]

Every pair of eyes in the room turned toward me, their gazes as sharp as knives.

"My God! So she's a repeat offender!"

"She went after a married man, and she still has the nerve to call herself innocent!"

I stared at the man's face on the screen. He wore a dark jacket and had a sharply defined profile.

Cold sweat instantly soaked through the back of my shirt. Even with such a clear photograph right in front of me, I couldn't recognize the man at all.

Those six months at the Southshire branch were the most transformative of my life.Away from the comforts of headquarters, I relied on the identification system I had developed for myself and sheer determination to get the numbers right. Through my efforts, I secured three projects worth 2,000,000 dollars each.No one at the branch knew my background. All they knew was that Miss Stark from administration never made a single error in her accounts.Throughout those six months, Benedict kept his word and never once used his authority to interfere. We lived like any ordinary long-distance couple, staying in touch through text messages and late-night phone calls.…A week before the project wrapped up, I received a black package with no return address.I peeled away layer after layer of wrapping until I uncovered an unmarked frosted-glass bottle. Beneath it lay a note: [Custom-made. One of a kind. Signed, your intern.]I pressed the spray nozzle, releasing a familiar fir-wood fragra

The day after the police took Madison away, the atmosphere on the company intranet changed completely. All the posts that had viciously attacked me were deleted, replaced by a flood of apologies and messages condemning Madison.Tina was fired on the spot, and the administration department underwent a complete overhaul. That afternoon, I ran into Tina by the elevator. She held a cardboard box in her arms, her eyes red and swollen. She glared at me with undisguised resentment. "Natasha, don't get too comfortable. Madison's locked up, and I've been fired, but everyone knows you only won because Mr. Carrington backed you. Nobody actually respects you for it."I pressed the elevator's down button and glanced at our reflections in the metal doors."I found the evidence against Madison myself. I spent the entire night putting the case file together."You rushed to take sides without even bothering to find out what really happened. You have no one but yourself to blame for getting fired.

At 2:00 p.m. that afternoon, every core member of the group's board of directors had gathered in Conference Room #1 on the top floor.Madison sat on the right side of the long conference table, her makeup flawless and her posture composed.Meanwhile, I had been summoned to face disciplinary review as an employee.Madison distributed printed copies of the photo around the table. "Members of the board, Natasha Stark's deliberate pursuit of our CEO, coupled with the chaos in her personal life, has already caused serious damage to this company's reputation."I recommend not only terminating her employment but also holding her liable for the damage to the company's reputation."As for Mr. Carrington's conduct throughout this matter, I believe his personal favoritism raises serious concerns, and I think—""You think what?" Benedict interrupted coldly from the head of the table. "Madison, before you start talking about holding anyone else liable, shouldn't you explain the unexplained 4,

Kalvin's legs gave out the moment he saw the legal team behind me and the letter of intent to sue.At first, he tried to insist that the photo had been leaked by accident. But when the legal team calmly recited the maximum penalties for defamation and commercial slander, he finally cracked. "Madison's assistant came to me first!"Kalvin scrambled for his phone. His hands shook so badly that he entered the wrong passcode twice before he finally managed to unlock it."The afternoon before yesterday, she gave me 10,000 dollars in cash at the underground parking garage across from the company, the one with the broken security cameras."But I was smart enough to make her transfer another 4,000 dollars as the remaining balance, so I'd have proof. She promised me another 20,000 dollars if I swore that the photo showed you and me checking into a hotel together."I've got the bank transfer record, screenshots of our chats, and even a recording of our entire conversation in the parking gar

The fire door to the second-floor terrace swung open, and Tina stepped inside, her expression wary and guarded."Natasha, don't try to bluff me. That photo's already all over the company. What more could I possibly know?" she demanded."If you don't know anything, then why were you swearing up and down to someone just a minute ago that this photo would ruin me for good?"I pulled out my phone, started recording, and set it on the air-conditioning unit beside us.Tina let out a derisive snort and lunged for my phone. "Recording me won't do you any good. I'm not the one who posted it!"I sidestepped her, caught her wrist, and met her gaze. "Tina, Madison promised you her supervisor position, didn't she? But think about it."Benedict might be under pressure right now, but he's still the CEO. Once he traces the IP address behind that photo, who do you think Madison will protect? You, or herself? Who do you think she'll throw under the bus?"Tina immediately stopped struggling, and h

The hostility in the conference room surged like a tide. Cameras flashed, and someone pulled out a phone to record the scene."Nothing to say?" Madison advanced toward me, one step at a time. "Natasha, how much longer are you going to keep up this act? Do I need to contact someone from your former company and have them confront you in person?"My fingernails dug into my palms as my mind buzzed with confusion.I couldn't recognize the man. The helplessness of being unable to trust my own memory was far more devastating than any insult they could throw at me. Suddenly, my vision went black.A sharp crack split the air as Benedict kicked the projector's power cord out of the outlet. Sparks flew, and the large screen instantly went dark."Mr. Carrington! What do you think you're doing?" Madison shrieked."Meeting's over."Benedict didn't even spare her a glance. He shrugged off his suit jacket and draped it over my head, shielding me from view.He wrapped an arm firmly around my sh
