Chapter 1

I assumed my post before the New Year, and to prevent the employees from reading too much into things, I specifically wore a custom-made, unbranded suit. I had just straightened the holly that the wind had knocked out of place at the shop entrance when a harsh shout suddenly broke out behind me.

"That intern over there! Get over here this instant!"

I was stunned for a moment, as it was the very first time in my life someone had addressed me that way.

I hadn't even had the time to process what was happening when a dust-covered broom came down hard on my leg.

It was then that the manager, whose suit was about to split open from his beer belly, scowled and glared at me. "Why are you just standing there? What's the matter with you? Do you intend to disobey your senior colleagues?"

I looked down at what I was wearing. I might not be wearing something with a visible brand, but I certainly didn't look like an intern who came to sweep the floors by any stretch of the imagination. I looked at him again and noticed the name tag pinned to him—Deputy Manager, Patrick Walker.

"Get all that confetti and fallen leaves away from the door this instant! Give it a proper sweep from top to bottom! You'll answer to me if this causes any delay to the inspection!"

Patrick turned and walked to the opposite side of the dealership after saying that, waving his hands as he barked orders at a few younger employees.

He soon marched back over after noticing that I was still standing there with a scowl. He snatched a dirty rag from a nearby corner and hurled it right at my face.

"Do you even know how to do your job? You're taking forever just to sweep up! Go scrub the restroom inside and out; otherwise, you can forget about passing your probation!"

That dirty rag hit me square in the face, bringing with it a musty stench and the sharp bite of cleaning chemicals.

I had painstakingly styled my hair so that I could head straight to a banquet this evening, but now it was completely ruined.

In that instant, my temper flared up. "What the hell is wrong with you? I don't work here as an intern!"

I had no intention of wasting any more time on him. I turned to leave, planning to get some spare clothes from my car and change into them. I had taken only a couple of steps when Patrick strode over and blocked my way.

He then raised his hand and slapped me hard across the face. "Didn't you hear what I told you? Go clean the damn restroom! How dare you talk back to me! You've got a lot of nerve!"

I clutched my stinging cheek, laughing in sheer disbelief. I had never been hit in my entire life; even Dad had never struck me. He was merely an obscure deputy manager within a subsidiary of Lingard Group. He had absolutely no right to order me around when I was the heir to the entire Lingard Group.

I was blinded by a sudden surge of fury, causing me to snap back purely on instinct. "I'll have you permanently blacklisted from this entire industry if you hit me again!"

I took the opportunity to change into a clean outfit and headed out to that long-awaited family banquet while Mateo was wrapping up things at the dealership and compiling the employees' claims. I removed my drenched suit and carefully applied concealer over the swelling on my face and the bruises on my forehead. I then brushed my disheveled hair and put on a tailored dark suit. I looked at my reflection in the mirror, and the disheveled figure was gone—replaced by someone impeccably dressed, yet with eyes that burned with even greater resolve.Though this inspection had brought humiliation and unfair treatment, it had unexpectedly rooted out a toxic parasite like Patrick, who relied on corporate backing to bully others. It had also provided a clear view of the systemic dysfunction within the retail branches and a deep understanding of the employees' plight. In the end, the whole experience ended up being way more valuable than a perfectly smooth run.It was half an hour later t

Mateo opened the documents he had brought over and read them aloud on the spot. "It has been determined, after an investigation, that during your tenure as regional deputy manager, you consistently harassed employees, solicited personal favors, falsified performance metrics, and embezzled company funds."In conjunction with your overt humiliation of the CEO of Lingard Group today, the board has decided that… "Your employment contract is terminated immediately, all bonuses are forfeited, and a group-wide notice of reprimand will be issued. You are permanently blacklisted from future employment, and we will pursue full legal action against you for the embezzlement of company funds in accordance with the law.""You can't do that!" Patrick completely lost it. He tried to grab my arm to plead for mercy, but Caleb intercepted him and held him down firmly. He struggled desperately, crying out to me. "I'm begging you, Mr. Lingard—please spare me just this once! I know I was in the wrong,

Patrick's knees buckled. He collapsed onto the cold, hard floor, repeatedly muttering to himself, "How could I have mistaken him for someone else? I swear I've met him before…"I turned to Mateo and asked, "What exactly happened here, Mateo? Why did he keep saying he knew me? Why was he so dead set on Caleb being Mr. Lingard?"Mateo took a step closer and explained what happened calmly. It turned out the whole thing started six months ago. I had just gotten my driver's license and, on a total whim, insisted on doing the driving myself. I absolutely refused to let Caleb take the wheel, forcing Mateo and Caleb to sit in the back while I drove. It was late at night and pitch black out, and the streetlights were barely lit. I was an inexperienced driver, so I didn't spot Patrick on his motorcycle by the side of the road and accidentally clipped him. It was thankfully just a minor scrape and nothing serious. I wanted to avoid the hassle and keep my identity a secret, so I had Mateo se

I questioned Patrick coldly, my voice echoing through the phone speaker and silencing everyone in the lobby.Patrick dropped his phone, and it hit the floor with a thud, the screen shattering instantly.I looked like a total disaster—water dripping down my face, blood staining the corner of my mouth, a nasty bruise on my forehead, and a soaked suit sticking to my body. I was still giving Patrick a freezing, menacing glare that sent shivers straight down his spine despite that.Patrick stumbled back a couple of steps, completely at a loss for words. "Y-You're actually Mr. Lingard?"Those surrounding employees instantly exploded into a frenzy of chatter."Huh? He's Mr. Lingard?""Oh, my God! Did I hear that right? Did we really just mistake Mr. Lingard for an intern and bully him?""It's over for me! I even helped hold Mr. Lingard down and pushed him against the sink earlier! He's definitely going to come after me!"Patrick looked at me, then at Mateo standing respectfully nearby

It was then that a shy-looking young man dressed in everyday casual clothes walked in. He was clutching a piece of paper in his hand and stood in the middle of the showroom floor, looking completely lost. Moira's eyes brightened as she rushed right over. "You're finally here, Mr. Lingard! You're incredibly accomplished for your age, looking even younger than the rumors made you out to be." Those around were all looking at the young man, while Patrick, too, adopted a fawning smile as he prepared to step forward. That young man scratched his head sheepishly, looking thoroughly confused. He handed over the paper to Moira and asked, "Who is this Mr. Lingard you're talking about? I'm not that person. I'm the new intern—this is my onboarding notice."Moira's smile instantly stiffened upon realizing the paper was indeed an onboarding notice.Patrick leaned in to take a look, and his temper instantly flared. "Who the hell just said that Mr. Lingard's car just pulled up? How dare you toy

I could feel my temple throbbing with rage as I saw the sticky spit on the floor. I was seconds away from losing it, but it was too soon to escalate things, so I turned and picked up the mop nearby.Patrick reached out and blocked me. "I told you to wipe it up—not mop it."I regarded him with disbelief. "What's that supposed to mean?"Patrick scoffed and held his chin high. "I'm telling you to get down on the floor and scrub it on your knees until it meets my standards."I finally snapped, slamming the mop onto the floor so hard the handle clattered loudly against the tiles. "I'm done! You're nothing but a petty regional deputy manager! Do you really think you're above all else?"Those employees quickly crowded around the door after hearing the commotion happening in the restroom. They were all sticking their necks out to sneak a peek, but nobody dared step in to break it up.Patrick, looking at the crowd of onlookers, felt completely humiliated. He stepped forward, raised his ha
