Kali just received a call from the front desk that a janitress asked to see her in her office. She sneered when she heard who it was.
"I am busy right now, but let her in. I'm sure she wants to see me to hand in her resignation. I can make time for that."
"Okay, Ma'am. I will tell her to come in."
"Thank you."
She put down the phone and put away the laptop on her desk. Then she heard three faint knocks on the door.
"Come in."
Slowly the door opened, and Lesley's head peeked.
"Good evening," the young lady greeted before entering her office.
Kali smiled widely. She could no longer wait to sign Lesley's resignation papers.
"So, how may I help you, Miss Madrigal?"
"Y-yes." Lesley swallowed before continuing. "Uhm, I just wanted to say tha—"
"Wait!" she interrupted while she raised her right hand. "Let me guess. You want to leave, right?"
She did not wait for Lesley to answer and assumed that the girl was giving up her job. She stood up and took a couple of documents from the drawer behind her.
"Don't worry. I am expecting this, so I am not angry at all. Employees come and go. I understand that, especially in your case. I can only imagine how hard and scary it was for you last night. So I can not blame you if you want to leave."
She smiled at Lesley, who was standing quietly in front of her desk. She handed over the documents to her and a black ballpen.
"Sign it, and you will be free. You have only been here for a day, so we will let you go," she said before returning to her seat.
Lesley looked at the papers for a few seconds and then looked at her face again. One of her eyebrows rose. The girl is not saying anything and seems deep in thought while staring at her.
"I still have a lot to do. I will really appreciate it if you sign it now and not waste any more of my time."
She frowned as the girl put the papers and the ballpen on the table.
"Uhm, I want to stay."
Both her eyebrows rose. "Say what?"
"I'm not going to leave. I'm sorry."
Her eyes widened while the veins in her neck protruded in anger. This was not what she wanted to hear from her.
Lesley has an apologetic look on her face while her restless hands are clasped in front of her. The girl took a deep breath before speaking again.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Dapit, but I want to stay. I came here to say that and to request to change task one. If possible, I want to be responsible for what V-03 eats every night. He is always served rice soups and unhealthy dishes. Even though he has vitamins, I do not think that is enough."
Kali's eyes widened even more. This girl in front of her was beyond doubt testing her patience. Lesley wanted to stay even if she was obviously pushing her out. And more importantly, her proposition to change task one was presumptuous. She was stunned and unable to speak for a moment. She could not believe the bravery of this girl.
"M-mrs. Dapit?" Lesley weakly called when she did not answer.
Kali took a deep breath to recover from the shock. She needed to calm down, or she might have a heart attack.
"Is it just me, or did I hear you say you wanted to stay? And, and you want to change his diet?!"
Lesley confidently smiled. Unlike earlier, there was no more nervousness on her face.
"You heard correctly."
She was astounded for a second. "Why?! After everything I told you, why?!"
Lesley's fists clenched while giving her a firm gaze. Her eyes were not the same as before. She could see a fire burning in them. Where did that weak and timid girl go?
"I know you have little confidence in my ability. I am not numb so as not to feel that you dislike me. But Mrs. Dapit, I dare to stay no matter what you say. I desire to continue working here at the hospital as V-03's caregiver at night."
Lesley paused for a second before she took another deep breath. Then she pressed her chest with her right hand.
"Please, give me a chance. I promise I can handle him, Mrs. Dapit. You will not regret hiring me!" she wholeheartedly pleaded.
Her lips parted, and she was once again speechless. She stared at her determined face. She could see that this girl was dead serious about staying. It made her curious.
"But why?" she asked as her forehead furrowed. "I don't understand. What do you see in that patient? Why are you forcing yourself to work here?"
"This is my decision, Mrs. Dapit. Nobody is forcing me. And I..."
Lesley lowered her gaze and shyly bit her lower lip. The girl thought deeply for a few seconds before lifting her head again.
"I feel like we are connected..."
"What?!"
"I-It's hard to explain. I-I also have other reasons, but that is not the point. It does not matter what other reasons I have. The important thing is that I can do my job well. I proved it last night, didn't I?"
She exhaled sharply.
This girl is unbelievable...
She looked at the girl in front of her with anger and amazement. She was offended because she did not get what she wanted. But she admired the determination this lady showed.
Lesley was more courageous than she thought. She underestimated this woman.
"You are one brave girl," she said breathlessly.
It looks like she can not do anything anymore. Now she is beginning to understand why Jacoben allowed this girl to work in the hospital. This girl is something else.
"Fine," she said defeatedly. "Do what you want. Change his diet if you need to. You have my permission."
Lesley happily covered her mouth and beamed in excitement.
"Really?! Thank you! Thank you very much, Mrs. Dapit!"
Her eyes narrowed. "Let me just remind you. That patient is a monster. Believe it or not, I mean it literally."
Lesley just smiled. She seemed to not care about her remarks towards V-03.
Kali slowly shook her head in disbelief. When she first saw Lesley, she gave an aura of a girl who knew nothing about the world. She looked so innocent and fragile. That is why she was disappointed when Lesley was assigned to V-03, their most violent patient. But this same girl showed her some real guts just now. She was impressed.
She tore the resignation papers and threw them in the trash bin next to her desk.
"Do you need anything else? If you don't, you may leave. Go and attend to your monster pet," she mockingly said. "I just hope you are still that determined when you see the true color of that person. Don't say I did not warn you."
Lesley's heart leaped with joy at what Kali said. The cantankerous woman finally gave her a chance to prove herself. She felt very proud.
"I will not disappoint you! Thank you so much again!"
She could not hide the joy on her face when she came out of Mrs. Dapit's office. She got permission to cook what she liked for V-03. And most of all, she was able to impress that intimidating woman.
Lesley still had a few things she wanted to ask Kali regarding V-03 and the hospital, but she was afraid she would annoy her even more than she already was. Mrs. Dapit might change her mind if she pushes it. Anyway, there are other people she can ask.
She has a broad smile as she walks and greets everyone she passes by. She is now officially an employee in MNA. She can not wait to be friends with people in this hospital. And even more, she can not wait to go to V-03 right now. While riding the elevator down to Basement 1, she caught up with two female nurses who stood in front of her. The nurse on the right pressed the B1 button, the same floor she was going to. "Excuse me," she said, gaining their attention. "Can I ask a question?" The two turned around to face her and smiled. They looked friendly enough. Since they seemed to be working on the same floor as her, where the special patients are held, they might be able to answer some of her questions. "Sure, what is it?" the woman at the right kindly replies. "Uhm, where do I go if I need to ask about B1 patients? I just want to know the name of the one assigned to me and how old he is." She smiled shyly. "I'm sorry, I'm just new here, so I don't know." "Oh, girl. That is top s
A few weeks passed. Lesley and Bangs became even closer to each other. The more Lesley spends time with him, the less she feels lonely. She felt like she had a new family. One that she had been longing for. She loves the feeling that Bangs is giving her. The feeling of being wanted and needed. These are the emotions she never experienced with Amanda, no matter how much she yearned. From childhood until now, she has never tasted a mother's or family's love. But for Bangs, she is like his light in his dark, cold and sad world in MNA, as if she is the most important thing in his life. "Bangs, I'm going home. Behave yourself while I am gone, okay?" He did not answer, but there was a trace of frustration on his face. "Don't be sad. I will come back tomorrow." She laughed softly at his long face. It has already been a while, but he is still not used to seeing her go home. She smiled while she waved her hand. "Goodbye! Be good." His black eyes followed her to the door until she w
"What kind of patients are there here?" she weakly murmured to herself as she recalled what happened earlier. This hospital seems to have more secrets than she thought. She could not forget what the man had said. It sounds impossible, but after her disturbing and frightening experience earlier, it might all be true. She shut her eyes tightly and bowed dejectedly. She is so tired. I want to go home... She heard the sound of the elevator opening. She heavily sighed before she stepped outside. She was on her way to her locker when she saw an old man crying in a corner. She wants to ignore it because she is dying to go home now, but she can not endure his loud sobs. She has a soft spot for elderlies and children. "Excuse me," she called while slowly approaching him. The old man did not seem to hear her. He was wearing a blue polo and black pants. Both his hands are covering his face while facing the wall. "Sir, do you need help?" she asked, trying to sound as friendly as possib
"Les... Les... Lesley! Get up, or I will kiss you!" Lesley sighed in irritation. Patrick had been tapping her on the shoulder non-stop. He returned to her room a few times to remind her that they would be late for school, but she kept ignoring him. She had no desire to go or get up. She only wanted to sleep all day. She lazily opened her eyes and then looked around the room. She blinked to clear her blurry sight and looked at Patrick, who was scowling. "What are you still doing here?" she asked, lacking in tone. "Why are you not getting up yet? We will be late!" She forced herself to sit up and brushed her palms over her face. "Didn't I tell you that you can leave without me?" Patrick folded his arms and narrowed his eyes, staring intently at her face. "I thought you wanted to maintain your position as a dean's lister? We have tests today. Are you going to miss it? Why?" he asked suspiciously. With that question, the events of the night in Ward 511 played again in her mind.
She stops as she notices many people outside Bangs' ward. Some of them were carrying strange guns. NSF initials were written on the back of their military uniforms. It is short for Nobles Special Forces. There were also a few nurses and doctors in front of the door. She could clearly see the fear in their eyes. Her legs froze. She suddenly remembered Rosana, Ernesto's wife, and what happened in ward 511 two days ago. What if Bangs is a monster too? A few seconds later, an almost lifeless man on a stretcher was pulled out by some nurses from Bangs’ ward. She recognized him. He was one of Bangs' doctors on the morning shift. She covered her mouth in shock as the man passed in front of her. The doctor is not breathing and is missing an ear. His body is full of deep wounds and is bathing in his own blood. Her eyes watered as she stared at the red door. "No... It can't be..." She gasped for air from the intense fear that suddenly enveloped her. She turned around. But before she could
Lesley quietly sits on the sofa inside Dr. Shane's office while contemplating what happened earlier. She remembers the look on people's faces after Mrs. Dapit interrupted her moment with Bangs. Everyone there had their jaws almost dropped while their eyes popped out at the unexpected kissing scene they witnessed. She wants to pull her hair and kick her feet. Why did Bangs do that? And why did she let it happen? It was her first kiss. Most of all, they did it in front of a lot of people! She wishes for the ground to swallow her up from the extreme embarrassment she is feeling. She will definitely become even more famous in this hospital now. Mrs. Dapit directed her to go to Dr. Shane's office immediately, which she followed without any second thoughts and left Bangs' side. She was given a new uniform because the one she wore had bloodstains on it. She got it when Bangs carried her and hugged her. "Do you want coffee?" said the doctor, who had just entered the room and was carrying
She sobbed loudly, and it got the monster's attention back to her. It stretched out its long tongue and was about to strike her when several gunshots echoed in the room. She opened her eyes and saw herself spattered with black blood from the monster. She looked in the direction where the gunshots came. There she saw the two guards holding strange and long guns. They shot Rosana several times more to make sure it was dead. The two nurses, who were also waiting outside, went in to carry her out. Before they exited through the door, she glanced at Ernesto's severed head one last time, filled with pity, grief, and bitterness. The nurse who led her out helped her sit on the floor not far from Rosana's w
"You will be ours forever..."Those were the first words Shane said when Lesley asked what kind of deal they were offering her. She wanted to laugh at it until Shane laid out the other details of their agreement."We will double your salary. We will provide all the healthcare you need. You will also receive educational assistance, but you will still work here with us after you graduate. There are many more benefits you can get from us. You can check the contract, which will be provided to you by my assistant later."Her lips parted, and both her eyebrows rose in astonishment. It sounded enticing. But to work with them forever like a puppet? No way! She shook her head aggressively."Do you think, after wh
