Amelia couldn't breathe.

Her mind went completely blank, short-circuiting under the sudden, suffocating weight of his proximity. The heat radiating off Adrian’s body was a stark contrast to the freezing warehouse air. She could feel the rapid, heavy thud of his heart against her own chest, a frantic rhythm that perfectly mirrored hers.

"What did she cost him?"

The question echoed in her mind, making absolutely no sense. He was the one who had taken everything from her—her childhood innocence, her sense of safety, her belief that hard work mattered more than a bloodline.

Yet, looking up into his storm-gray eyes, she saw something shattered. It was a raw, bleeding vulnerability that terrified her far more than his anger ever could. For one terrifying second, her gaze dropped to his lips. Her body, betraying every logical instinct she possessed, leaned infinitely closer.

Adrian’s breath hitched. His eyes darkened, his gaze dropping to her mouth.

The spell broke.

Panic seized Amelia. She shoved both of her hands flat against his chest, pushing him back with all her strength. "Get away from me."

Adrian let her push him. He stumbled back a half-step, looking entirely disoriented for a fraction of a second before the heavy steel doors of his composure slammed firmly shut. The vulnerability vanished, instantly replaced by the cold, impenetrable billionaire heir.

He reached up, casually adjusting the lapel of his overcoat where she had gripped it, his expression hardening into ice.

"Don't look at me like a monster, Amelia," Adrian said, his voice a low, perfectly controlled drawl. "Not when you're the one who walked willingly into my cage."

"You forced me into that contract," she shot back, stepping away from the scaffolding, desperate to put space between them so she could think clearly. She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to suppress the trembling in her hands. "You trapped me."

"I gave you a choice. You chose the money," he replied smoothly, though the muscle jumping in his jaw betrayed his calm facade. He turned his back to her, looking out over the demolished plaster. "And now we have a deadline. The reason I had your mock-up destroyed is that the city’s structural records are completely inaccurate. Your load-bearing walls would have collapsed the eastern wing."

Amelia blinked, her professional instincts fighting through her emotional turbulence. "That's impossible. We pulled the original municipal permits from 1982."

"My father didn't build to municipal permits. He built to his own specifications, and he kept the real schematics private," Adrian explained, checking the gold watch on his wrist. "If you want to save this project—and your firm—we need the original, hand-drawn blueprints."

"Fine," Amelia said tightly, desperately wanting to be back in the safety of her own office. "Where are they? In the corporate archives downtown? I’ll send my assistant to pull them."

"They aren't at the corporate office," Adrian said, turning his head to look at her over his shoulder. The coldness in his eyes was replaced by a heavy, almost cautious dread. "They are in the private library."

The bottom dropped out of Amelia’s stomach.

"No," she whispered, the color instantly draining from her face.

"My driver is waiting outside," Adrian said, his tone leaving absolutely no room for negotiation. "Gather your things. We are leaving."

"I am not going back there, Adrian," Amelia said, her voice shaking. "You can't make me go back to the Estate."

"You signed the contract, Ms. Hart," he replied softly, though there was a strange, tight edge to his voice. "We go where the work requires us to go."

Thirty minutes later, Amelia sat in the back of Adrian’s sleek, black SUV. The silence between them was thick and suffocating. Adrian stared out his window, his jaw clenched, while Amelia kept her eyes glued to her lap, her stomach twisting into violent knots.

The Blackwood Estate.

She hadn't set foot on the sprawling, manicured grounds since the night she and her mother were practically chased off the property. The night her father's name had been dragged through the mud. Every ghost of her past lived behind those wrought-iron gates.

The SUV slowed down, the tires crunching softly against the familiar gravel of the long, winding driveway. Towering oak trees cast long, skeletal shadows over the immaculate lawns. At the end of the drive, the massive stone mansion loomed like a fortress, its towering pillars and dark windows screaming of old, untouchable money.

Amelia’s heart hammered a frantic, terrified beat against her ribs. She felt like she was suffocating.

The vehicle came to a smooth halt in front of the grand marble steps. The driver quickly exited, opening Adrian's door first, then rounding the back to open Amelia’s.

Adrian stepped out, buttoning his suit jacket. Amelia forced herself to follow, her legs feeling like lead.

She stepped onto the pavement, the crisp morning air doing nothing to calm her racing pulse. She looked up toward the massive double doors of the mansion, preparing herself to face the ghosts of her childhood.

Instead, she found a monster waiting for her in the flesh.

Standing at the top of the marble steps, draped in an immaculate white cashmere coat, was Victoria Blackwood.

Her blonde hair was perfectly styled, her posture as rigid and commanding as a queen surveying her kingdom. As her sharp, calculating eyes locked onto Amelia, a slow, terrifyingly cold smile spread across her lips.

"Well," Victoria’s voice floated down the steps, sharp and sweet as broken glass. "Look what the cat dragged in."

Amelia forgot how to breathe. The world narrowed to the man sitting in the leather backseat of Victoria Blackwood’s car. The graying hair at his temples was new. The expensive, tailored suit looked unnatural on his frame. But the soft brown eyes—the eyes that used to crinkle at the corners when he read her bedtime stories—were entirely unmistakable."Dad?"The word torn from her throat was a fragile, bleeding thing.Daniel Hart flinched as if she had struck him. He opened his mouth, his face pale and hollow, but Victoria reached out a gloved hand and gently laid it on his forearm. The gesture looked almost affectionate, but the underlying threat was crystal clear."Drive, Charles," Victoria ordered smoothly, not taking her eyes off Amelia."Wait! Dad, stop!" Amelia threw herself forward, her hands slamming against the tinted glass of the window. "Dad, look at me! Please!"The engine roared. The heavy tires kicked up gravel, spraying dust across her shoes as the sedan accelerated down

"Hide."The word was a barely audible, frantic breath against Amelia’s ear. Before she could react, Adrian grabbed her by the waist and pulled her deep into the shadow of the rearmost bookshelf on the gallery walk, shielding her completely with his broad frame. The rhythmic *thwack-step, thwack-step* of Richard Blackwood’s cane echoed off the high mahogany walls below.Amelia held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped beast. She was pressed flat against the cold wood of the shelving unit, the red personnel file clutched against her chest. Adrian stood inches from her, his arm stretched to grip the high shelf above her head, sealing her in the dark nook."Adrian?" Richard’s booming, gravelly voice cut through the heavy silence of the library. "I know you're in here. Your mother said you brought that Hart girl to my house."Adrian took a slow, deep breath, smoothing down his white dress shirt with his free hand before stepping out into the open gallery, resting

"Give it to me, Amelia."Adrian’s voice was no longer a soft, ragged murmur. It was the sharp, commanding bark of a CEO managing a catastrophic corporate leak. His hand shot out, his long fingers clamping tightly around the edge of the red folder."Get your hands off it!" Amelia screamed, ripping the file backward with so much force the heavy cardstock tore slightly in his grip. She scrambled backward along the narrow upper gallery, putting the heavy wooden reading pedestal between them. Her chest heaved, her heart thrashing against her ribs so violently she thought it might shatter them. She clutched the file to her chest like a shield, her eyes wide and wild."Amelia, you do not know what you are looking at," Adrian warned. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her, holding his hands up as if trying to calm a cornered animal. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving his eyes a stark, terrifying silver. "That is a classified personnel document. Hand it to me.""It’s a

The air inside the Blackwood Estate tasted exactly as Amelia remembered: lemon polish, crushed velvet, and suffocating silence. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind her, sealing out the crisp morning air and trapping her inside a mausoleum of her worst childhood memories. The grand foyer stretched out before her, a sprawling expanse of black and white checkered marble illuminated by a massive crystal chandelier.Fourteen years ago, she had spent an entire Saturday watching her mother scrub every single one of those marble tiles on her hands and knees until her knuckles bled.Amelia swallowed hard, fighting the sudden, violent nausea twisting in her gut. She dug her fingernails into her palms, anchoring herself to the present.Adrian walked past her, his footsteps entirely silent on the thick Persian runner. He shed his charcoal overcoat, tossing it carelessly over the back of a priceless antique chair, and began unbuttoning his suit jacket."The staff has the morning off," Adrian s

"Mother," Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped smoothly in front of Amelia. The subtle shift in his posture was instantaneous—a shield built from broad shoulders and tailored wool. "What are you doing here? You were supposed to be at the country club until evening."Victoria Blackwood slowly descended the marble steps, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. She ignored her son entirely, her sharp blue eyes pinned to Amelia with the cold detachment of a scientist examining a specimen beneath a microscope."I live here, darling," Victoria said smoothly, stopping two steps above them so she could look down at Amelia. "Unlike some people, who seem to have forgotten their place."Amelia felt the blood rush to her face, a familiar, humiliating heat that threatened to consume her. But as she looked up at the woman who had spent years treating her mother like dirt, something inside her snapped into place. She was no longer a frightened child hiding in the estate
