"Tear it down. Every single wall. Now."

The deafening crunch of a sledgehammer violently shattering drywall echoed through the hollowed-out warehouse of the Waterfront District. Plaster rained down, and a thick cloud of white dust billowed into the freezing morning air.

Amelia froze just inside the entrance, her coffee slipping from her hand and splattering across the concrete floor.

It was 6:05 AM. The site was supposed to be empty except for the two of them. Instead, a full demolition crew was actively destroying the scaled mock-up of the central atrium—a physical model it had taken her team three weeks to build.

Standing amidst the debris, looking entirely untouched by the dust in a tailored charcoal overcoat and leather gloves, was Adrian.

"Stop!" Amelia screamed, sprinting across the uneven floorboards, ignoring the danger in her high-heeled boots. "Stop the crew right now!"

The foreman lowered his sledgehammer, looking nervously between Amelia and the billionaire who was signing his paychecks.

Adrian didn’t even flinch at her shouting. He turned his head slowly, his expression entirely unreadable.

"Ms. Hart," Adrian said, his voice carrying effortlessly over the hum of the idling heavy machinery. "How nice of you to join us. I was just correcting a flaw in your blueprint."

"That isn't a flaw; it's a load-bearing partition for the open-concept layout!" Amelia marched right up to him, practically vibrating with rage. "You are destroying thousands of dollars of approved work!"

"It was approved by a board with no imagination," Adrian replied coldly, stepping over a pile of broken plaster to look down at her. "It is uninspired. It is boring. I am not spending forty million dollars for you to build a generic glass box. If this is the extent of your vision, I will have the crew gut the rest of your mock-ups before noon."

The words hit her like a physical blow.

Suddenly, the cold, dusty warehouse vanished. She wasn't twenty-four years old anymore. She was fourteen, standing in the pristine kitchen of the Blackwood Estate in a patched-up dress, watching a teenage Adrian drop her science fair project onto the marble floor and laugh because it looked "cheap."

The humiliation burned the back of her throat like acid. He was doing it again. He was stripping away her dignity, reminding her that no matter how hard she worked, he could destroy it with a flick of his wrist because his last name was Blackwood and hers was nothing.

"Take a break," Amelia snapped at the foreman, not taking her eyes off Adrian. "Everyone. Outside. Now."

The crew didn't need to be told twice. Within seconds, the vast, echoing space was empty, leaving only the settling dust and the electric, suffocating tension between them.

"You have no right," Amelia hissed, stepping into his space, completely abandoning her professional composure. "You forced me into this contract. You trapped me. And now you’re publicly humiliating me in front of my own crew?"

"I am doing my job," Adrian shot back, his icy composure finally showing a microscopic crack. His jaw tightened. "If you cannot handle criticism—"

"This isn't criticism!" she yelled, her voice echoing off the high steel rafters. She shoved two fingers into the lapel of his expensive overcoat, completely reckless, entirely consumed by the injustice of it all. "This is you, punishing me for existing! Just like you did when we were kids! You are the same spoiled, arrogant boy who couldn't stand the fact that the maid's daughter breathed the same air as you!"

"You know absolutely nothing about me, Amelia," Adrian snarled, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly warning.

"I know everything about you!" she pushed back, her chest heaving, the unshed tears of a humiliated teenager finally burning in her eyes. "You hide behind your money and your title because, underneath it all, you are just cruel, Adrian. You are cruel, and you are empty, and you ruin things just because you can!"

Something in his gray eyes snapped.

He moved so fast she didn't even have time to gasp.

Adrian grabbed her by the hips, hoisting her backward. Her spine hit the cold steel of the heavy construction scaffolding. Before she could push him away, he stepped directly between her legs, planting both of his gloved hands heavily against the metal on either side of her head, completely caging her in.

The sudden violence of the movement evaporated instantly, replaced by a heavy, terrifying physical intimacy.

The cold warehouse air seemed to vanish. He was inches away, his broad chest rising and falling rapidly against hers. The sharp scent of cedar and morning cold wrapped around her, intoxicating and dangerous. For the first time, Amelia realized how big he really was—how easily he could overpower her, and how fiercely her traitorous heart was suddenly beating at the proximity.

Adrian leaned in, his lips hovering a breath away from hers. The cold arrogance was gone, replaced by something raw, volatile, and deeply wounded.

"Do you have any idea," he whispered, his voice trembling with a suppressed rage that felt entirely too close to passion, "what you cost me?"

Amelia forgot how to breathe. The world narrowed to the man sitting in the leather backseat of Victoria Blackwood’s car. The graying hair at his temples was new. The expensive, tailored suit looked unnatural on his frame. But the soft brown eyes—the eyes that used to crinkle at the corners when he read her bedtime stories—were entirely unmistakable."Dad?"The word torn from her throat was a fragile, bleeding thing.Daniel Hart flinched as if she had struck him. He opened his mouth, his face pale and hollow, but Victoria reached out a gloved hand and gently laid it on his forearm. The gesture looked almost affectionate, but the underlying threat was crystal clear."Drive, Charles," Victoria ordered smoothly, not taking her eyes off Amelia."Wait! Dad, stop!" Amelia threw herself forward, her hands slamming against the tinted glass of the window. "Dad, look at me! Please!"The engine roared. The heavy tires kicked up gravel, spraying dust across her shoes as the sedan accelerated down

"Hide."The word was a barely audible, frantic breath against Amelia’s ear. Before she could react, Adrian grabbed her by the waist and pulled her deep into the shadow of the rearmost bookshelf on the gallery walk, shielding her completely with his broad frame. The rhythmic *thwack-step, thwack-step* of Richard Blackwood’s cane echoed off the high mahogany walls below.Amelia held her breath, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped beast. She was pressed flat against the cold wood of the shelving unit, the red personnel file clutched against her chest. Adrian stood inches from her, his arm stretched to grip the high shelf above her head, sealing her in the dark nook."Adrian?" Richard’s booming, gravelly voice cut through the heavy silence of the library. "I know you're in here. Your mother said you brought that Hart girl to my house."Adrian took a slow, deep breath, smoothing down his white dress shirt with his free hand before stepping out into the open gallery, resting

"Give it to me, Amelia."Adrian’s voice was no longer a soft, ragged murmur. It was the sharp, commanding bark of a CEO managing a catastrophic corporate leak. His hand shot out, his long fingers clamping tightly around the edge of the red folder."Get your hands off it!" Amelia screamed, ripping the file backward with so much force the heavy cardstock tore slightly in his grip. She scrambled backward along the narrow upper gallery, putting the heavy wooden reading pedestal between them. Her chest heaved, her heart thrashing against her ribs so violently she thought it might shatter them. She clutched the file to her chest like a shield, her eyes wide and wild."Amelia, you do not know what you are looking at," Adrian warned. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her, holding his hands up as if trying to calm a cornered animal. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving his eyes a stark, terrifying silver. "That is a classified personnel document. Hand it to me.""It’s a

The air inside the Blackwood Estate tasted exactly as Amelia remembered: lemon polish, crushed velvet, and suffocating silence. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind her, sealing out the crisp morning air and trapping her inside a mausoleum of her worst childhood memories. The grand foyer stretched out before her, a sprawling expanse of black and white checkered marble illuminated by a massive crystal chandelier.Fourteen years ago, she had spent an entire Saturday watching her mother scrub every single one of those marble tiles on her hands and knees until her knuckles bled.Amelia swallowed hard, fighting the sudden, violent nausea twisting in her gut. She dug her fingernails into her palms, anchoring herself to the present.Adrian walked past her, his footsteps entirely silent on the thick Persian runner. He shed his charcoal overcoat, tossing it carelessly over the back of a priceless antique chair, and began unbuttoning his suit jacket."The staff has the morning off," Adrian s

"Mother," Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped smoothly in front of Amelia. The subtle shift in his posture was instantaneous—a shield built from broad shoulders and tailored wool. "What are you doing here? You were supposed to be at the country club until evening."Victoria Blackwood slowly descended the marble steps, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. She ignored her son entirely, her sharp blue eyes pinned to Amelia with the cold detachment of a scientist examining a specimen beneath a microscope."I live here, darling," Victoria said smoothly, stopping two steps above them so she could look down at Amelia. "Unlike some people, who seem to have forgotten their place."Amelia felt the blood rush to her face, a familiar, humiliating heat that threatened to consume her. But as she looked up at the woman who had spent years treating her mother like dirt, something inside her snapped into place. She was no longer a frightened child hiding in the estate

  • The Boy I Swore to hate    Chapter 5: The Cage

Amelia couldn't breathe. Her mind went completely blank, short-circuiting under the sudden, suffocating weight of his proximity. The heat radiating off Adrian’s body was a stark contrast to the freezing warehouse air. She could feel the rapid, heavy thud of his heart against her own chest, a frantic rhythm that perfectly mirrored hers."What did she cost him?"The question echoed in her mind, making absolutely no sense. He was the one who had taken everything from her—her childhood innocence, her sense of safety, her belief that hard work mattered more than a bloodline.Yet, looking up into his storm-gray eyes, she saw something shattered. It was a raw, bleeding vulnerability that terrified her far more than his anger ever could. For one terrifying second, her gaze dropped to his lips. Her body, betraying every logical instinct she possessed, leaned infinitely closer.Adrian’s breath hitched. His eyes darkened, his gaze dropping to her mouth. The spell broke.Panic seized Amelia. She
