The text arrived while Maya was finishing a logo revision for a client.

**Unknown number:**

Heard you’re back in town.

We should talk, Maya.

I made mistakes. I know that.

But I still think about you.

She stared at the screen for a long time, the cursor blinking over the half-finished design. The number wasn’t saved, but she didn’t need it to be. She knew exactly who it was.

Daniel.

Her ex.

The one who had smiled at her over breakfast the same morning she walked in on him with someone else. The one who had spent weeks afterward sending long, careful apologies that never quite managed to sound sorry. The one she had moved cities to get away from.

Maya deleted the message without answering.

Two hours later another one came.

**Daniel:**

I’m serious. I’m in the area this week for work.

Just coffee. No pressure.

I miss you.

She blocked the number.

By evening she had almost convinced herself it was nothing. Old ghosts sometimes tried to rattle doors. That didn’t mean she had to open them.

Noah showed up at 9:40 with takeout and the easy smile that still made her stomach flip. He kissed her at the door like he’d been thinking about it all day, one hand settling at the small of her back as he walked her inside.

“Long day?” he asked, setting the food on the counter.

“Something like that.”

He studied her face a second longer than usual, but he didn’t push. They ate on the mattress again. Noah told her about a difficult client who’d argued with every form correction. Maya told him about the logo that refused to look right. It felt normal. Comfortable. Dangerous.

Afterward Noah cleaned up while she answered one last email. When she closed the laptop he was already watching her from the kitchen doorway, arms crossed, expression soft.

“Come here,” he said.

She went.

The kiss started slow and turned deep fast. Noah backed her toward the mattress, peeling her shirt off along the way. Maya shoved his hoodie up and off. They fell onto the bed in a tangle of limbs and half-removed clothes, laughing under their breath when her elbow caught his ribs.

The laughter faded when Noah’s mouth found her throat.

He took his time. Soft bites and slower kisses down her chest, across her stomach, until he was settled between her thighs and her hands were in his hair. He licked into her like he had all night, steady and filthy, two fingers curling inside her until her hips lifted off the mattress and she came with a broken sound she tried to muffle against her wrist.

Noah kissed his way back up her body, rolled on a condom, and pushed into her in one smooth thrust. Maya’s head tipped back. He stayed deep for a second, forehead against hers, before he started to move.

It was good. It was always good. But tonight there was an edge under it she couldn’t quite name—something restless in the way he watched her face, the way his hands gripped her a little tighter than usual.

Afterward they lay tangled in the sheets, Noah’s fingers tracing idle patterns on her bare hip. The ceiling fan turned slowly overhead. Maya was half-asleep when her phone lit up on the floor.

She ignored it.

It lit up again.

Noah’s hand stilled. “You want to get that?”

“No.”

A third buzz.

Maya sighed, reached down, and flipped the phone over. The preview on the lock screen was short and clear.

**Daniel:**

I saw you earlier. Outside the coffee place on Oak.

You look good, Maya.

Please just talk to me.

The air in the room changed.

Noah had seen it too. She felt it in the sudden tension of his body beside her, the way his fingers stopped moving completely.

Maya locked the phone and set it face-down. “It’s nothing.”

“Didn’t look like nothing.”

She sat up, pulling the sheet around her chest. “My ex. He’s in town. He’s been texting. I blocked him once already.”

Noah was quiet for a long moment. When he spoke his voice was carefully even. “The one who cheated.”

“Yeah.”

“And he’s showing up where you get coffee.”

Maya looked at him. Noah was staring at the far wall, jaw tight, the muscle there ticking once.

“I handled it,” she said. “I blocked the new number too.”

“Has he texted again since?”

“No.”

Noah nodded once, but the tension in his shoulders didn’t ease. He sat up, reached for his boxers, and pulled them on with sharp, controlled movements. Maya watched him, unease sliding cold under her skin.

“Noah.”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re not.”

He laughed under his breath, short and humorless. “You want me to be fine with some guy who hurt you tracking you down and telling you you look good? Because I’m not. I’m really fucking not.”

The possessiveness in his voice should have annoyed her. Instead it sent a complicated heat through her chest.

Maya shifted onto her knees and reached for him. “Hey. Look at me.”

He did. His eyes were darker than usual.

“I’m not going back to him,” she said quietly. “Not ever. He could show up every day and it wouldn’t change anything.”

Noah’s throat worked. He reached out and cupped the side of her neck, thumb stroking over her pulse. “I know that. Logically I know that. But the idea of him even looking at you makes me want to put my fist through a wall.”

The honesty landed heavy between them.

Maya leaned in and kissed him. Noah made a low sound and kissed her back harder, almost rough. The earlier softness was gone. He rolled her under him, shoved the sheet out of the way, and settled between her thighs like he needed to prove something.

This time wasn’t slow.

Noah pushed into her in one deep thrust and fucked her with an intensity that bordered on desperate. One hand pinned both of hers above her head. The other gripped her hip hard enough to bruise. Every stroke was deep and claiming, like he was trying to rewrite every place anyone else had ever touched her.

Maya met him thrust for thrust, legs wrapped around his waist, nails digging into his shoulders when he finally let her hands go. The wet sound of their bodies filled the room. Noah dropped his head and bit the side of her neck, not hard enough to mark, but hard enough to make her gasp.

“You’re mine,” he gritted against her skin. “You’ve been mine since we were kids. He doesn’t get to look at you. He doesn’t get to text you. He doesn’t get a single fucking piece of you.”

The words crashed through her like a wave.

Maya came hard, crying out as the orgasm tore through her. Noah followed a few thrusts later, burying himself deep and groaning her name like it hurt.

In the quiet afterward the only sound was their breathing.

Noah carefully pulled out and dealt with the condom, then came back and gathered her against his chest. His heart was still racing under her ear. Maya stared at the wall and felt the old familiar panic start to rise.

You’ve been mine since we were kids.

It was too much. Too honest. Too close to the thing she’d been trying not to name.

She shifted away slightly. Noah’s arm tightened for a second before he let her go.

“Maya.”

“I need a minute.”

She sat up, reached for his discarded T-shirt, and pulled it on. The fabric still smelled like him. That made it worse.

Noah sat up too, watching her carefully. “Talk to me.”

“You can’t say things like that.”

“Like what?”

“That I’ve been yours since we were kids. That I’m yours now.” Her voice came out tighter than she wanted. “We said this was—”

“Don’t.” Noah’s voice was quiet but firm. “Don’t do that. Don’t pretend we haven’t been past ‘just sex’ for a while now.”

Maya stood, needing the distance. “I told you I don’t do complicated.”

“And I told you I wasn’t going to keep pretending this is casual.” He ran a hand through his hair, frustration clear. “I’m in this, Maya. All the way. And I need to know if you are too, or if you’re going to keep running every time it gets real.”

The question hung in the air between them.

Maya’s throat felt too tight. She looked at the man sitting on her mattress—the boy who used to share his fries, the man who fixed her sink and left coffee at her door and looked at her like she was something worth waiting for—and felt the full weight of how much she already cared.

It terrified her.

“I need some air,” she said.

Noah’s expression flickered, but he nodded. “Okay.”

She walked to the sliding door, stepped out onto the balcony, and let the cool night air wash over her bare legs. Behind her she heard Noah moving around the apartment, gathering his clothes. The quiet felt heavy.

When he appeared in the doorway a few minutes later he was fully dressed. He didn’t step outside.

“I’m going to give you space,” he said quietly. “Real space this time. But I’m not walking away from this. From you. So when you’re ready to stop being scared, you know where I am.”

He waited a beat, like he hoped she might stop him.

Maya didn’t.

Noah left.

The door clicked shut behind him.

Maya stayed on the balcony long after he was gone, arms wrapped around herself, the night air cool against her skin. Across the grass his balcony light stayed dark.

She had wanted space.

She had gotten it.

And it already felt like a mistake.

  • The Boy Next Door    Epilogue

**One Year Later**The rain had started again, soft and steady against the windows, the same way it had the night Noah showed up soaked and refused to let the silence win.Maya stood at the sliding door of the apartment that had been theirs for a full year now, coffee mug warm between her hands, and watched the water bead and run down the glass. Across the narrow strip of grass, the unit that used to be hers still sat quiet in the early morning light. Someone else lived there now—a young couple with a small dog that barked at squirrels. She never looked at it with longing. She only looked at it the way people look at an old photograph: proof of a version of herself she had outgrown.Behind her, the bedroom door opened.Noah’s footsteps were familiar even before his arms slid around her waist. He rested his chin on her shoulder, still warm from sleep, and pressed a slow kiss to the side of her neck.“You’re up early,” he murmured.“Couldn’t sleep.” She leaned back into him. “Anniversar

  • The Boy Next Door    Chapter 22: Home

**Six months laterMaya woke to the smell of coffee and the low sound of rain against the windows. For a moment she stayed still, eyes closed, cataloguing the familiar details the way she sometimes still did—Noah’s heavier breathing behind her, the warm weight of his arm across her waist, the faint scent of his skin and the laundry detergent they both used now. The bed was theirs. The apartment was theirs. The quiet Sunday morning stretching ahead of them was theirs too.She smiled into the pillow.Behind her, Noah stirred. His arm tightened, pulling her more firmly against his chest. He pressed a slow, sleepy kiss to the back of her shoulder, then another higher up, near the side of her neck.“You’re awake,” he murmured, voice rough with sleep.“So are you.”“Your breathing changed.” He kissed the same spot again, lingering. “It always does.”Maya turned in his arms so she could see him. Noah’s hair was a mess. There was a faint crease on his cheek from the pillow. His eyes were sof

**The first box went into Noah’s apartment on Saturday morning.Maya stood in the middle of her nearly empty living room and stared at the bare walls. The mattress was still there—stripped and leaning against the wall for the donation pickup—but almost everything else had already been carried across the grass. Noah had recruited one of the trainers from the gym to help with the heavier pieces. The two of them moved with efficient, minimal conversation while Maya packed the last of the kitchen things and tried not to feel the strange finality of it.Sofia showed up mid-morning with coffee and an exaggerated look of appraisal.“You’re really doing it,” she said, leaning against the doorframe. “Giving up the emergency exit.”Maya taped a box shut and shot her sister a look. “It’s not an emergency exit. It’s an apartment I barely used.”“Uh-huh.” Sofia sipped her coffee, eyes sparkling. “Dad said Noah looked like he was trying not to smile too hard the whole time you were at the house. M

****The drive to Maya’s parents’ house the next morning felt longer than the actual twenty minutes it took.Noah drove with one hand on the wheel and the other resting on her thigh, thumb tracing slow, absent circles through the fabric of her jeans. Maya watched the familiar streets pass and tried to organize what she wanted to say. Her parents already knew the broad strokes from Sofia’s call and the police report. What they didn’t know was how deeply Noah was woven into the story now—or how permanent she intended that to be.Noah glanced over. “You nervous?”“A little.” She covered his hand with hers. “They always liked you. I’m more nervous about admitting how long I tried to keep this casual when it never was.”His mouth curved. “I’ll try not to look too smug about being right.”“Appreciated.”The house looked the same as it always had—neat lawn, the old oak tree that still held the remnants of a tire swing, her mother’s flower beds along the front walk. Maya’s father opened the d

  • The Boy Next Door    Chapter 19: Final Line

****The restraining order paperwork sat on Noah’s kitchen table like a quiet threat of its own.Maya stared at the printed forms while Noah finished a call with the lawyer his security-contact friend had recommended. The woman on the other end had been brisk and practical: document everything, file promptly, request a temporary order first, prepare for the possibility that Daniel might contest it. None of it was complicated. All of it felt heavy.Noah ended the call and set his phone down. “She can meet us tomorrow morning at the courthouse. Temporary order can usually be issued the same day if the judge agrees the pattern of contact is clear.”Maya nodded. Her coffee had gone cold an hour ago. “Okay.”He pulled out the chair beside her and sat. His knee bumped hers under the table and stayed there. “You don’t have to do this alone. I’ll be with you the whole time.”“I know.” She reached for his hand without looking. His fingers closed around hers immediately. “I just hate that it go

  • The Boy Next Door    Chapter 18: The Choice

****Maya woke before Noah the next morning.Sunlight filtered through the half-open curtains of his bedroom, painting a soft stripe across the sheets and the bare curve of his shoulder. He slept on his stomach, face turned toward her, one arm stretched out like he had reached for her in the night and simply left it there. The sight of him—unarmed, unguarded, completely at ease in sleep—made something tight and tender pull under her ribs. She lay still for a long time and watched him breathe. The events of the previous night sat in her chest like a stone that had finally started to dissolve. Daniel at the door. Noah stepping into the hallway without hesitation. The raw, protective edge in his voice when he told her ex that it was over. The way he had held her afterward, steady and certain, while the leftover adrenaline drained out of both of them. She had spent years building walls designed to keep exactly this kind of feeling out. And somehow the boy next door had walked through ever
