Maya woke up to the feeling of Noah’s mouth pressed softly against the back of her shoulder.

For a few seconds she kept her eyes closed and simply let herself exist inside the moment—the warm weight of his arm across her waist, the slow drag of his lips along her skin, the rain still whispering faintly against the balcony outside. No panic arrived. No immediate urge to create distance. Just a quiet, steady warmth that settled low in her chest and stayed there.

“You’re awake,” Noah murmured against her shoulder.

“How do you always know?”

“Your breathing.” He pressed another kiss to the same spot, then higher, near the side of her neck. “It changes.”

Maya turned in his arms so she could see him. Noah’s hair was a disaster. There was a faint crease on his cheek from the pillow. His eyes were soft and a little tired and completely open. She reached up and brushed her thumb across the crease.

“Hi,” she said.

“Hi.”

They stayed like that for a while, trading slow, unhurried kisses that didn’t try to become anything else. When Noah finally pulled back, he rested his forehead against hers.

“I meant what I said last night,” he said quietly. “I’m in this. All the way. But I need you to be honest with me about what you want. No more half-measures. No more locking the door when it gets scary.”

Maya’s stomach fluttered. She traced the line of his collarbone with one finger, following the familiar scar.

“I want to try,” she said. The words felt large in her mouth. “For real. Not just the sex. Not just the nights. I want the mornings and the boring parts and the hard parts. I’m still scared. I’m probably going to mess up. But I want to try.”

Noah’s eyes closed for a second like the answer had landed somewhere deep. When he opened them again, the smile that spread across his face was slow and real and a little disbelieving.

“Okay,” he said. “Then we try.”

He kissed her again, deeper this time. Maya melted into it, sliding her leg over his hip, feeling him already half-hard against her. Noah made a low sound and rolled her under him, settling between her thighs with the kind of careful weight that made her feel surrounded instead of trapped.

They didn’t rush.

Noah took his time relearning her—mouth on her throat, her breasts, the soft skin of her stomach—until Maya was restless and tugging at his shoulders. When he finally pushed into her it was slow and deep and devastatingly intimate. He kept his eyes on hers the entire time, one hand laced with hers against the mattress, the other braced beside her head so he could watch every shift of expression on her face.

“You feel so good,” he murmured against her mouth. “Missed this. Missed you.”

Maya arched up to meet every stroke, legs wrapped high around his waist. The angle let him sink deeper, and the steady, deliberate rhythm he set had her breathing in broken pulls within minutes. When he reached between them and stroked her clit in tight circles, she came with a quiet, shaking cry, face pressed to the side of his neck. Noah followed soon after, hips pressing deep as he groaned her name into her skin.

Afterward they stayed tangled together, trading lazy kisses while their heart rates slowed. Noah brushed damp hair out of her face and looked at her like he still couldn’t quite believe she was there.

“Breakfast?” he asked eventually.

“You’re cooking?”

“I’m cooking.” He kissed the tip of her nose and sat up. “You’re staying right there looking like that while I do it.”

Maya laughed under her breath and watched him pull on his boxers and move around her kitchen. He made eggs and toast and the proper coffee she had started craving. They ate sitting on the mattress again, knees touching, the conversation easy and light in a way that felt brand new.

Around mid-morning Noah checked his phone and grimaced.

“I’ve got clients until four. But after that I’m free. Let me take you somewhere.”

Maya raised an eyebrow. “Somewhere?”

“Out. In public. On an actual date.” He said it casually, but she saw the slight tension in his shoulders, the way he watched her reaction. “If you want.”

The old instinct to hedge rose for a second. Maya breathed through it.

“I want,” she said.

Noah’s smile was worth every nervous flutter in her stomach.

He left for work with a lingering kiss and a promise to be back by five. Maya spent the afternoon actually getting work done, the quiet of the apartment no longer feeling oppressive. She showered, spent too long choosing something to wear, and settled on dark jeans and a soft black top that made her feel like herself. When Noah knocked at 5:07 she opened the door to find him in a clean button-down with the sleeves rolled up, hair still slightly damp from a shower.

“Hi,” he said, eyes moving over her in a way that made her skin warm.

“Hi.”

He took her hand as they walked to his car. The simple public contact—fingers laced, his thumb stroking over her knuckles—felt more intimate than some of the nights they had spent naked. Maya let herself lean into it.

They drove to a small Italian place two towns over that Noah claimed had the best carbonara she would ever taste. The hostess seated them at a corner table. Noah ordered wine without making a production of it. Conversation flowed easier than Maya expected—work stories, old neighborhood gossip, the ridiculous client who had tried to argue with physics. Every so often their knees bumped under the table and neither of them moved away.

Halfway through the meal Noah reached across the table and took her hand again.

“This okay?” he asked quietly.

Maya looked at their joined hands, then at him. “Yeah. It’s okay.”

His answering smile was soft enough to make her chest ache.

After dinner they walked for a while along the quiet main street, still holding hands. The air was cool and clean from the previous night’s rain. Noah told her about the first apartment he had rented after high school and how badly he had burned a frozen pizza on the first night. Maya told him about the disastrous group project that had almost made her switch majors. The conversation meandered without pressure.

When they finally drove home, Noah walked her up the stairs and paused at her door.

“I can say goodnight here,” he offered. “If you want the night to yourself.”

Maya looked at him standing in the hallway—open, patient, clearly willing to give her space if she needed it—and felt the last of the evening’s nerves settle into something warmer.

“Come in,” she said.

They didn’t make it to the mattress immediately. Noah kissed her against the closed door, slow and deep, hands sliding under her top to map the bare skin of her back. Maya tugged his shirt free from his jeans and got her palms on the warm muscle underneath. By the time they reached the bed they were both breathless and half-undressed.

Noah laid her down and took his time again—mouth and hands and whispered praise—until Maya was trembling and reaching for him. When he pushed into her she wrapped herself around him completely and held on. The sex was unhurried and intense, full of eye contact and soft sounds and the kind of closeness that still felt a little terrifying and completely necessary. They came within moments of each other, Noah’s face buried in her neck, Maya’s nails trailing down his back.

Afterward he pulled her against his chest and tangled their legs together under the sheet. Maya listened to his heartbeat and the quiet of the apartment and the distant sound of a car passing on the street below.

“I’m still scared,” she admitted into the dark.

Noah’s hand stroked slowly along her spine. “I know. Me too, a little.”

She lifted her head. “You are?”

“Yeah.” He gave a small, crooked smile. “I’ve wanted this for a long time. Now that I have it, I’m terrified of messing it up.”

The honesty settled something in her. Maya leaned up and kissed him, soft and lingering.

“We’ll figure it out,” she said.

Noah’s arms tightened around her.

“Yeah,” he murmured against her hair. “We will.”

They fell asleep like that—tangled, warm, the door unlocked and the future still uncertain but no longer something Maya felt the need to run from.

For the first time in a long time, trying felt like enough.

  • The Boy Next Door    Epilogue

**One Year Later**The rain had started again, soft and steady against the windows, the same way it had the night Noah showed up soaked and refused to let the silence win.Maya stood at the sliding door of the apartment that had been theirs for a full year now, coffee mug warm between her hands, and watched the water bead and run down the glass. Across the narrow strip of grass, the unit that used to be hers still sat quiet in the early morning light. Someone else lived there now—a young couple with a small dog that barked at squirrels. She never looked at it with longing. She only looked at it the way people look at an old photograph: proof of a version of herself she had outgrown.Behind her, the bedroom door opened.Noah’s footsteps were familiar even before his arms slid around her waist. He rested his chin on her shoulder, still warm from sleep, and pressed a slow kiss to the side of her neck.“You’re up early,” he murmured.“Couldn’t sleep.” She leaned back into him. “Anniversar

**Six months laterMaya woke to the smell of coffee and the low sound of rain against the windows. For a moment she stayed still, eyes closed, cataloguing the familiar details the way she sometimes still did—Noah’s heavier breathing behind her, the warm weight of his arm across her waist, the faint scent of his skin and the laundry detergent they both used now. The bed was theirs. The apartment was theirs. The quiet Sunday morning stretching ahead of them was theirs too.She smiled into the pillow.Behind her, Noah stirred. His arm tightened, pulling her more firmly against his chest. He pressed a slow, sleepy kiss to the back of her shoulder, then another higher up, near the side of her neck.“You’re awake,” he murmured, voice rough with sleep.“So are you.”“Your breathing changed.” He kissed the same spot again, lingering. “It always does.”Maya turned in his arms so she could see him. Noah’s hair was a mess. There was a faint crease on his cheek from the pillow. His eyes were sof

**The first box went into Noah’s apartment on Saturday morning.Maya stood in the middle of her nearly empty living room and stared at the bare walls. The mattress was still there—stripped and leaning against the wall for the donation pickup—but almost everything else had already been carried across the grass. Noah had recruited one of the trainers from the gym to help with the heavier pieces. The two of them moved with efficient, minimal conversation while Maya packed the last of the kitchen things and tried not to feel the strange finality of it.Sofia showed up mid-morning with coffee and an exaggerated look of appraisal.“You’re really doing it,” she said, leaning against the doorframe. “Giving up the emergency exit.”Maya taped a box shut and shot her sister a look. “It’s not an emergency exit. It’s an apartment I barely used.”“Uh-huh.” Sofia sipped her coffee, eyes sparkling. “Dad said Noah looked like he was trying not to smile too hard the whole time you were at the house. M

****The drive to Maya’s parents’ house the next morning felt longer than the actual twenty minutes it took.Noah drove with one hand on the wheel and the other resting on her thigh, thumb tracing slow, absent circles through the fabric of her jeans. Maya watched the familiar streets pass and tried to organize what she wanted to say. Her parents already knew the broad strokes from Sofia’s call and the police report. What they didn’t know was how deeply Noah was woven into the story now—or how permanent she intended that to be.Noah glanced over. “You nervous?”“A little.” She covered his hand with hers. “They always liked you. I’m more nervous about admitting how long I tried to keep this casual when it never was.”His mouth curved. “I’ll try not to look too smug about being right.”“Appreciated.”The house looked the same as it always had—neat lawn, the old oak tree that still held the remnants of a tire swing, her mother’s flower beds along the front walk. Maya’s father opened the d

****The restraining order paperwork sat on Noah’s kitchen table like a quiet threat of its own.Maya stared at the printed forms while Noah finished a call with the lawyer his security-contact friend had recommended. The woman on the other end had been brisk and practical: document everything, file promptly, request a temporary order first, prepare for the possibility that Daniel might contest it. None of it was complicated. All of it felt heavy.Noah ended the call and set his phone down. “She can meet us tomorrow morning at the courthouse. Temporary order can usually be issued the same day if the judge agrees the pattern of contact is clear.”Maya nodded. Her coffee had gone cold an hour ago. “Okay.”He pulled out the chair beside her and sat. His knee bumped hers under the table and stayed there. “You don’t have to do this alone. I’ll be with you the whole time.”“I know.” She reached for his hand without looking. His fingers closed around hers immediately. “I just hate that it go

****Maya woke before Noah the next morning.Sunlight filtered through the half-open curtains of his bedroom, painting a soft stripe across the sheets and the bare curve of his shoulder. He slept on his stomach, face turned toward her, one arm stretched out like he had reached for her in the night and simply left it there. The sight of him—unarmed, unguarded, completely at ease in sleep—made something tight and tender pull under her ribs. She lay still for a long time and watched him breathe. The events of the previous night sat in her chest like a stone that had finally started to dissolve. Daniel at the door. Noah stepping into the hallway without hesitation. The raw, protective edge in his voice when he told her ex that it was over. The way he had held her afterward, steady and certain, while the leftover adrenaline drained out of both of them. She had spent years building walls designed to keep exactly this kind of feeling out. And somehow the boy next door had walked through ever
