Chapter 3

Author: MooMoo
A chill ran down my spine when I realized someone was trying to unlock my apartment.

This couldn't be happening.

I had only taken over the lease from a young woman two days ago.

It was in a newly built development, so there weren't many neighbors either.

I never expected the security to be this poor.

The lock kept beeping to indicate that the password was wrong, and the man outside seemed to grow agitated.

"You think changing the lock will keep you safe? Hahaha. I have plenty of ways to make you open the door."

The voice of an unfamiliar man came from outside, vicious and threatening.

A moment later, something heavy slammed against the door.

I trembled and quickly called the police from my phone before dialing my emergency contact.

"Jojo, a stranger is trying to break down my door. I'm so scared."

The moment I called the police, my composure completely fell apart..

My voice shook with fear, and I spoke through tears.

The person on the other end paused before replying quickly.

"Lock yourself in the bedroom and grab something to protect yourself. I'll be there soon."

It was Stephen's voice.

He didn't hang up. I could hear a car speeding through the streets.

The police arrived soon after and took away the man who tried to break in.

Stephen arrived as well.

I curled up under the covers, trembling.

He hurried over, pulled me into his arms, and comforted me in a gentle voice.

The cold cedar scent surrounded me, and my heartbeat gradually calmed.

"It's all right. I'm here," Stephen whispered tenderly.

I only learned the truth after giving my statement.

The man who tried to break in was the boyfriend of the woman I rented the apartment from.

They had a major fight, and she ended the relationship without mentioning that she had already rented out the apartment.

He thought she still lived there and wanted to teach her a lesson.

I no longer dared to return to the apartment I rented.

Stephen took me back to his home.

He lived in an apartment too, except his was a luxurious residence in the city center with an enormous living room, a private elevator, and understated, minimalist decor.

Stephen handed me a strawberry milkshake.

It was my favorite, but I only paused for a moment before accepting it.

What a surreal day.

I had somehow experienced every possible twist and turn.

Stephen led me to the master bedroom.

"You sleep here."

"What about you?"

"I'll sleep on the sofa outside. Call me if you need anything."

I closed my eyes, then quickly opened them again. I was still a little frightened.

I remembered how, during the first few years after my father fell into debt, debt collectors had constantly shouted and pounded on our door.

My mother had covered my ears and hidden with me in a corner, telling me not to make a sound. She said they would leave once they grew tired of knocking.

Waiting was the only thing I could do.

The scene that night had dragged me back into that nightmare.

I grabbed Stephen's arm.

"Can you not sleep outside?"

I asked in a small voice.

"Okay."

Without the slightest hesitation, Stephen sat down on the sofa so I could sleep peacefully.

I didn't have a single nightmare that night. I slept soundly.

The next morning, I woke to warm sunlight shining on me.

"Are you awake?"

Stephen looked slightly tired, perhaps because he hadn't slept well.

He made me breakfast—a sandwich.

"How did my call end up reaching you yesterday?"

"I used your phone to add my number as your emergency contact."

His tone made it sound completely natural.

Right. Of course he had.

"What? Something like this happened to you? That was so dangerous!"

Jojo looked shocked when she heard what had happened.

"Where did you stay last night? Why didn't you tell me?"

"I called Stephen yesterday and stayed at his place."

"I knew it! Did you use the opportunity to make a move on him?"

"……"

I never expected Stephen to look so cold and aloof on the outside, yet be completely and hopelessly in love."When did Mr. Farr Sr. see my photo?""When we were still friends, Grandpa was happy that my mood had improved. I showed him your photo and told him you were the girl I liked. I never expected him to recognize you instantly after all these years.""Then what about your letter? Picky couldn't possibly have been me.""You forgot? You once wrote a novel for class based on yourself. The female lead was named Picky."I vaguely remembered that. Thinking about it made me feel a little embarrassed."What did the letter say?"I asked curiously. His face flushed, and he refused to let me see it.I pestered him and coaxed him in every way I could until he reluctantly showed me a short passage. It described what had been going through his mind whenever he missed me.I never expected Stephen to be so secretly devoted. He had liked me for so long, yet he hadn't said a word."What

My tears stopped instantly. "What do you mean?"Stephen sighed. "Do you remember the transfer student at your school during your sophomore year? The one who used a wheelchair?""How did you..." I stopped. He knew?During my sophomore year, a transfer student joined our class. He used a wheelchair and rarely spoke. He only stared at the birds outside the window. His hair was slightly long and fell over his eyebrows. His entire presence seemed gloomy and defeated, as though he had lost all hope for the future. Some classmates said he was once a gifted prodigy. He had been in a terrible car accident after a ballroom dancing competition. He barely survived, and his lower body was almost completely paralyzed. There was little hope that he would ever make a full recovery.Someone who had always been so proud and competitive had suffered such a devastating blow.It must have been unbearably cruel for him."That boy was you?"He nodded. When Stephen transferred to the school, h

The rumor fell apart on its own, and Nina could no longer maintain her facade.I had no choice but to ignore everything and begin my presentation.I covered the current situation, next quarter's plans, our targets, and how we intended to achieve them. There were no major problems. I delivered the presentation steadily.Afterward, several coworkers looked at me with undisguised curiosity.Annie darted over to me."Yuna, tell me what's going on. Why is your photo on Mr. Farr's computer? You and he are actually together, aren't you? What about Nina, then...?""Stephen and I are dating." I had no choice but to admit it.When I returned to the office, my coworkers began whispering among themselves."I always thought Nina was Mr. Farr's fiancée. I never expected it to be Yuna Smith.""Why didn't Nina explain herself? She kept up that act for so long.""Exactly. I can't believe his actual girlfriend was right here the whole time. She has no shame.""Still, I think Nina and Mr. Fa

I asked curiously, "How do you know?""Everyone's been saying that she's a perfect match for Mr. Farr. They say she's the granddaughter of his grandfather's longtime friend."Nina? When had she become Stephen's fiancée?Nina arrived in perfectly applied makeup and a sexy professional outfit. She gave everyone a sweet smile. "Please take good care of me."Nina was certain that I hadn't made my relationship with Stephen public. Or perhaps she simply didn't care. She had come here just to provoke me.Anyone who saw a childhood friend from an equally prestigious family would assume that she was Stephen's fiancée.Stephen happened to be away, so no one was there to expose her charade. After Nina arrived, everyone became even more convinced that she was Stephen's fiancée."Nina, are you and Mr. Farr really discussing marriage?"Nina didn't answer. She only gave a shy smile, making no effort to hide the love in her eyes and leaving everyone to imagine the rest."Nina, were you and M

The next day, my coworkers were buzzing with gossip when I arrived at the office. A few of them had even pulled out their cushion compacts to touch up their makeup."I don't know. I heard he's unmarried.""Seriously? Someone this outstanding still isn't married?""He probably has a girlfriend. A handsome and successful man like Mr. Farr must have women lining up to pursue him."Were they referring to our vice president, Victor Fahr? I pictured a potbellied, half-bald man. What kind of terrible judgment did they have? I shook my head."Yuna, did you hear? Mr. Farr is coming to inspect the company today." Annie leaned over and revealed the inside scoop in a mysterious voice."Didn't Mr. Fahr come last month?" I asked in confusion. Victor only came for an inspection once every three months. Why were they never this excited before?Annie was busy applying false eyelashes, so she only tossed out one sentence before falling silent."That means no slacking off today. Ugh." I sighe

"Want to have dinner together tonight?"Stephen sent me a message. He also sent me a location pin. The restaurant was right beside my office."Sure. See you then!"The restaurant was so expensive it made my jaw drop. I heard that it cost at least $500 per person.Everyone coming and going was dressed formally. I looked down at my T-shirt and jeans and fell into deep thought.A child came running through the lobby.I frowned. Which family did this little brat belong to?Sure enough, the child accidentally knocked over a drinks table the next second. The glasses of alcohol on top wobbled dangerously, about to spill.I quickly sidestepped out of the way.Thank goodness I was wearing jeans. They made it so easy to move."Ah!" The woman behind me let out a sharp scream. The champagne that had nearly spilled all over me landed on the young woman behind me instead. A small stain spread across her figure-hugging skirt."Stop!" the woman called after me. "You got my skirt dirty an
