Chapter 2

Author: MooMoo
The man froze for a moment, his expression darkening.

He drove me home and told me to wait for him outside.

A discreet Maybach slowly pulled up.

I eagerly climbed into the car.

"Maplewood Gardens."

I gave him the address.

Then I realized how strange it sounded, as if I were treating him like an Uber driver.

So, I raised my voice and repeated it in a sweet tone. "Maplewood Gardens, darling~"

The man shuddered.

Well, it wasn't my fault when he refused to tell me his name.

"Stephen Farr."

He reluctantly told me his name.

"Great, great. My name is Yuna Smith."

He could have said so from the start. I secretly stuck my tongue out at him.

The car fell silent, with only the sound of the wind rushing past the windows.

My phone buzzed at the worst possible moment. Message after message came in, all from Jojo bombarding me.

"Oh my God!!"

"You and him actually matched?"

"Do you know who he is?"

She sent me a link to his résumé.

"He only returned to the country recently, and this was his first matchmaking event."

"Do you know how much the women around me regretted not going after him once you left?

They said that if they'd known he was this easy to win over, they would've rushed over and claimed they'd dated five men. Hahahahahaha."

"You lucky brat."

I opened the link. It contained Stephen's personal information and an impressive list of achievements. He founded QY in the Meridia at nineteen and acquired several well-known domestic companies at twenty.

He was unbelievably rich. If the breakup payment was based on his net worth...

I counted on my fingers. The number had to be huge!

My hands trembled with excitement.

Then I spotted another detail: He returned to the country on November 15.

Wasn't November 15 just yesterday?...

"Were you this straightforward with the men you dated before?" Stephen suddenly asked.

His voice was cold, and I couldn't read his emotions.

My previous relationships had felt like free trials. They ended after only a few days with a breakup check. I never got to experience the ups and downs of love, but I had suffered more than enough from the breakups.

"Not exactly. Your qualifications are impossible to ignore." I began shamelessly flattering him.

"Oh?" He gave a cold laugh, clearly unconvinced.

"I mean every word." I widened my eyes sincerely.

Stephen was undeniably impressive, so I wasn't lying when I praised him.

He said nothing more.

When we arrived, I reached out to unfasten my seat belt, but a cold, broad hand pressed down on mine.

"In such a hurry?"

The car was unlit. Stephen's eyes were pitch-black and especially deep in the faint light, like bottomless wells that could pull people in.

"No, no." I quickly waved my hands.

Suddenly, everything went dark as a shadow leaned over me.

His face stopped just a few inches from mine.

His sculpted features loomed before me.

He paused for a few seconds.

Then Stephen took my phone and sat back down.

"Add me on your messaging app."

Once I understood his intention, my cheeks flushed.

What was that supposed to mean?

He tossed my phone back to me.

"Good night."

I muttered a quick good night and hurried away.

I thought I heard him chuckle softly, but I had no time to dwell on it.

I returned home, washed up, and got into bed.

Everything that happened that day felt like a dream.

Still, once I received the breakup check, I could finally pay off my debt.

I picked up my phone.

There was a friend request, and he had already accepted mine.

His profile picture showed nothing but a plain back view of someone. It might have been him.

His display name was simply "Farr."

I casually browsed through his social feed. Just as I expected, there was almost nothing there—only a few dull business updates.

A message appeared.

"Go to bed early."

I replied, "Okay."

I was about to turn off the light and close my eyes when I heard a voice outside the door. "Beep. Incorrect passcode."

I never expected Stephen to look so cold and aloof on the outside, yet be completely and hopelessly in love."When did Mr. Farr Sr. see my photo?""When we were still friends, Grandpa was happy that my mood had improved. I showed him your photo and told him you were the girl I liked. I never expected him to recognize you instantly after all these years.""Then what about your letter? Picky couldn't possibly have been me.""You forgot? You once wrote a novel for class based on yourself. The female lead was named Picky."I vaguely remembered that. Thinking about it made me feel a little embarrassed."What did the letter say?"I asked curiously. His face flushed, and he refused to let me see it.I pestered him and coaxed him in every way I could until he reluctantly showed me a short passage. It described what had been going through his mind whenever he missed me.I never expected Stephen to be so secretly devoted. He had liked me for so long, yet he hadn't said a word."What

My tears stopped instantly. "What do you mean?"Stephen sighed. "Do you remember the transfer student at your school during your sophomore year? The one who used a wheelchair?""How did you..." I stopped. He knew?During my sophomore year, a transfer student joined our class. He used a wheelchair and rarely spoke. He only stared at the birds outside the window. His hair was slightly long and fell over his eyebrows. His entire presence seemed gloomy and defeated, as though he had lost all hope for the future. Some classmates said he was once a gifted prodigy. He had been in a terrible car accident after a ballroom dancing competition. He barely survived, and his lower body was almost completely paralyzed. There was little hope that he would ever make a full recovery.Someone who had always been so proud and competitive had suffered such a devastating blow.It must have been unbearably cruel for him."That boy was you?"He nodded. When Stephen transferred to the school, h

The rumor fell apart on its own, and Nina could no longer maintain her facade.I had no choice but to ignore everything and begin my presentation.I covered the current situation, next quarter's plans, our targets, and how we intended to achieve them. There were no major problems. I delivered the presentation steadily.Afterward, several coworkers looked at me with undisguised curiosity.Annie darted over to me."Yuna, tell me what's going on. Why is your photo on Mr. Farr's computer? You and he are actually together, aren't you? What about Nina, then...?""Stephen and I are dating." I had no choice but to admit it.When I returned to the office, my coworkers began whispering among themselves."I always thought Nina was Mr. Farr's fiancée. I never expected it to be Yuna Smith.""Why didn't Nina explain herself? She kept up that act for so long.""Exactly. I can't believe his actual girlfriend was right here the whole time. She has no shame.""Still, I think Nina and Mr. Fa

I asked curiously, "How do you know?""Everyone's been saying that she's a perfect match for Mr. Farr. They say she's the granddaughter of his grandfather's longtime friend."Nina? When had she become Stephen's fiancée?Nina arrived in perfectly applied makeup and a sexy professional outfit. She gave everyone a sweet smile. "Please take good care of me."Nina was certain that I hadn't made my relationship with Stephen public. Or perhaps she simply didn't care. She had come here just to provoke me.Anyone who saw a childhood friend from an equally prestigious family would assume that she was Stephen's fiancée.Stephen happened to be away, so no one was there to expose her charade. After Nina arrived, everyone became even more convinced that she was Stephen's fiancée."Nina, are you and Mr. Farr really discussing marriage?"Nina didn't answer. She only gave a shy smile, making no effort to hide the love in her eyes and leaving everyone to imagine the rest."Nina, were you and M

The next day, my coworkers were buzzing with gossip when I arrived at the office. A few of them had even pulled out their cushion compacts to touch up their makeup."I don't know. I heard he's unmarried.""Seriously? Someone this outstanding still isn't married?""He probably has a girlfriend. A handsome and successful man like Mr. Farr must have women lining up to pursue him."Were they referring to our vice president, Victor Fahr? I pictured a potbellied, half-bald man. What kind of terrible judgment did they have? I shook my head."Yuna, did you hear? Mr. Farr is coming to inspect the company today." Annie leaned over and revealed the inside scoop in a mysterious voice."Didn't Mr. Fahr come last month?" I asked in confusion. Victor only came for an inspection once every three months. Why were they never this excited before?Annie was busy applying false eyelashes, so she only tossed out one sentence before falling silent."That means no slacking off today. Ugh." I sighe

"Want to have dinner together tonight?"Stephen sent me a message. He also sent me a location pin. The restaurant was right beside my office."Sure. See you then!"The restaurant was so expensive it made my jaw drop. I heard that it cost at least $500 per person.Everyone coming and going was dressed formally. I looked down at my T-shirt and jeans and fell into deep thought.A child came running through the lobby.I frowned. Which family did this little brat belong to?Sure enough, the child accidentally knocked over a drinks table the next second. The glasses of alcohol on top wobbled dangerously, about to spill.I quickly sidestepped out of the way.Thank goodness I was wearing jeans. They made it so easy to move."Ah!" The woman behind me let out a sharp scream. The champagne that had nearly spilled all over me landed on the young woman behind me instead. A small stain spread across her figure-hugging skirt."Stop!" the woman called after me. "You got my skirt dirty an
