The explosion of noise inside the confined space of the SUV was deafening.

*Bang!*

The heavy object Lena had blindly fired kicked back violently against her shoulders, nearly dislocating her wrists. A blinding flash of muzzle smoke filled the cabin, stinging her eyes and burning her throat.

The masked man lunging through the door froze mid-motion. The tactical rifle slipped from his gloved hands, clattering uselessly against the pavement outside. For a fraction of a second, he stared down at Lena with wide, disbelieving eyes through the slits of his tactical mask before his knees buckled and he collapsed backward out of sight.

Lena dropped the weapon, her entire body shaking so violently she couldn't even draw breath. Her palms were raw, smeared with gunpowder and sticky warmth. She had just shot someone. She had crossed a line she could never uncross.

"Lena!"

A large, heavy hand grabbed her shoulder, pulling her out of the frozen stupor.

Adrian hauled her up into the front cabin, his face streaked with soot and a fresh spray of blood that wasn't his own. His eyes were wild, scanning the perimeter with the cold focus of a seasoned predator. Two of the ambushers were down on the asphalt, but the third truck was shifting into reverse, its tires smoking as it prepared to cut its losses and flee into the dense mountain fog.

"Are you hit?" Adrian demanded, his hands gripping her face, his thumbs wiping away a smear of ash from her cheek. His voice was frantic, stripped of all corporate composure. "Lena, look at me. Did they touch you?"

"I... I pulled the trigger," she whispered, her voice a hollow, broken echo as she stared down at her trembling hands. "I killed someone..."

"You survived," Adrian corrected fiercely, his grip tightening around her shoulders. "Just like you did eight years ago."

Before Lena could process the raw, suffocating intensity in his eyes, the sound of distant sirens pierced the mountain air, wailing closer by the second. The remaining truck slammed its accelerator, roaring around the blind curve and disappearing into the night.

Adrian didn't waste a second. He kicked the driver’s side door fully open, pulling the wounded, unconscious chauffeur into the passenger footwell and sliding behind the wheel himself. The heavily damaged SUV groaned in protest as he threw it into drive, tearing away from the bloody scene just as flashing red and blue lights illuminated the fog behind them.

They drove in dead silence for miles, plunging deeper into the isolated wilderness away from the city. The bulletproof glass was a web of cracks, and the side panels looked like Swiss cheese, but the engine held.

Finally, Adrian veered the vehicle off the main highway, cutting the headlights entirely before rolling down a secluded, overgrown forestry track hidden beneath a thick canopy of pine trees.

The engine died with a soft shudder. Total darkness enveloped them, broken only by the dim amber glow of the dashboard clock.

Inside the claustrophobic space of the car, the adrenaline finally crashed. Lena curled into herself against the passenger door, wrapping her arms tightly around her chest as a violent shudder wracked her frame. The reality of the wedding scandal, the public humiliation, her sister's tears, and now a literal assassination attempt collided all at once.

"They're not going to stop, are they?" Lena’s voice broke, the first tear finally spilling over her lashes. "Every time I get close to a normal life... every time I think the past is buried... it comes back."

Adrian shifted in the driver's seat. In the dim light, his massive silhouette turned toward her. Slowly, carefully, he reached across the console. His warm, steady hand closed around her ice-cold fingers, prying them apart from her defensive grip.

"They aren't going to stop," Adrian admitted quietly, his voice carrying a heavy, dangerous promise. "Because for eight years, they believed they had buried the secret completely. But today, you walked into that church. You said my name. And you proved that the past is still alive."

He pulled her hand toward him, his thumb brushing over the jagged scar on her wrist—the permanent mark left from the night she saved his life.

"Which means," Adrian whispered, leaning closer until his breath warmed her skin, "we are going to have to finish what we started eight years ago. Together."

The high-beam headlights flared blindingly through the shattered glass of the SUV, casting long, menacing shadows across the pine trees. Lena held her breath, the metallic taste of fear sharp on her tongue as Adrian’s arm locked like steel in front of her.Outside, heavy tactical boots crunched against the freezing gravel."Adrian Hayes!" a sharp, female voice echoed through the dark woods, devoid of any military filter. "Lower your weapon before your lawyer has a heart attack in my back seat!"Adrian didn't lower the firearm, but the lethal tension in his posture dialed back just a fraction. Through the glare, a slender woman in a sharp trench coat stepped into view, holding her hands shoulder-high. Behind her, Ethan Brooks scrambled out of the passenger side of the unmarked transport, looking pale, disheveled, and completely out of his element."Sophia," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly tone as he pushed the damaged SUV door open and stepped out into the ni

"You just painted a glowing neon sign on our backs!" Lena’s voice trembled, slicing through the heavy, suffocating silence of the ruined SUV the exact second Adrian ended the encrypted call. "You want an investigative journalist here? In the middle of a pitch-black forest? While the professional assassins who just unloaded a dozen armor-piercing rounds into this car are actively hunting us with military rifles?!" Adrian did not flinch at her rising panic. He turned his imposing frame toward her, the dim amber light of the dashboard casting harsh, sharp shadows across the fierce, unapologetic angles of his face. "If we keep blindly running in the dark, Lena, we remain prey," Adrian stated, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that vibrated through the cramped cabin. "And I do not play prey. If they want a ghost from eight years ago, I am going to give them a public resurrection they will never forget." He reached across the center console, his movements rigid and tightly controlled. H

The darkness inside the secluded SUV felt heavy, suffocating, and thick with secrets that had remained buried for nearly a decade.Lena stared down at where Adrian’s thumb was still tracing the jagged, pale line of her scar. Every instinct she possessed told her to pull away, to open the door and run into the dark wilderness, to go back to the predictable safety of her old life. But the bullet holes riddling the vehicle’s frame and the terrifying memory of the masked assassin on the highway were a brutal, unforgiving reminder: there was no going back. Her old life had been a comforting illusion, a carefully constructed lie built on manipulated memories and forged protection."Why me?" Lena whispered, her voice cracking as she finally lifted her gaze to meet his intense, dark eyes. "If I saved you eight years ago, why didn't anyone look for me? Why did my own medical records say I was recovering from a simple car accident in a completely different city?""Because the people who orchest

Adrian bellowed over the rising chaos. He didn't hesitate for a single microsecond. With terrifying, raw physical strength, Adrian hauled Lena off the plush seat, dragging her down into the cramped footwell beneath the dashboard. He immediately covered her body entirely with his broad, muscular frame, using himself as a human shield as an absolute barrage of armor, piercing rounds slammed mercilessly into the side of the armored SUV. Metal groaned under the assault, sparks flew in a blinding spray, and the suffocating smell of sulfur, cordite, and burning rubber filled the tig

"How do you know about that?!" Lena’s scream tore through the soundproof cabin of the SUV, laced with paralyzing terror. The warehouse. The cold concrete. The stench of blood. The dying man. It was the darkest corner of her mind, locked away behind years of therapy and forced smiles. No one knew. Not Emma. Not her mother. Not even the doctors who claimed her trauma was just a side effect of a concussion. She shoved violently against Adrian’s chest, her nails digging into his suit. "Who are you?! Are you one of them? Did they send you to finish it? Answer me!"Adrian did not flinch. He kept his massive frame hovering over her, his hands caging her wrists against the seat. His eyes scanned every millimeter of her panicked face."I'm not one of them," he said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "I’m the reason you were there.""Liar!" she spat, kicking at his legs.
