The darkness inside the secluded SUV felt heavy, suffocating, and thick with secrets that had remained buried for nearly a decade.

Lena stared down at where Adrian’s thumb was still tracing the jagged, pale line of her scar. Every instinct she possessed told her to pull away, to open the door and run into the dark wilderness, to go back to the predictable safety of her old life. But the bullet holes riddling the vehicle’s frame and the terrifying memory of the masked assassin on the highway were a brutal, unforgiving reminder: there was no going back.

Her old life had been a comforting illusion, a carefully constructed lie built on manipulated memories and forged protection.

"Why me?" Lena whispered, her voice cracking as she finally lifted her gaze to meet his intense, dark eyes. "If I saved you eight years ago, why didn't anyone look for me? Why did my own medical records say I was recovering from a simple car accident in a completely different city?"

"Because the people who orchestrated that attack didn't just want me dead," Adrian replied, his jaw tightening as cold fury flashed in his eyes. "They wanted complete control over the Hayes empire. The night I was ambushed, I was meeting with a board member who was secretly leaking company assets to a massive shell corporation. I found out. They tried to silence me permanently before I could take the evidence to federal authorities."

"And when I pulled you out of that wreckage..." Lena realized, the chilling pieces violently clicking together in her mind.

"You became an unexpected loose end," Adrian finished softly. "If the conspirators had known who you were back then, they would have eliminated you that very night without a second thought. But your mother... and whoever else was manipulated into silencing you... they chose a safer route. They wiped your slate clean, fractured your memory with heavy trauma and experimental suppressants, and convinced you that you had experienced a completely different accident altogether."

Lena’s breath hitched, the room spinning around her. Her mother. The woman who had slapped her at the altar just hours ago, screaming that she had ruined Emma's life. Had her own mother known the truth all along? Had she hidden Lena in plain sight just to keep her safe from the monsters who hunted Adrian?

Before Lena could process the crushing weight of that betrayal, the quiet hum of the vehicle’s internal communication system flickered to life.

A secure, encrypted phone mounted on the dashboard lit up, flashing a bright red incoming priority alert.

Adrian immediately released her hand, leaning over the center console. He punched a precise sequence of keys, activating the secure line. A tense, breathless voice filled the cabin.

"Mr. Hayes! Thank God you're alive," the voice cried out. It was Ethan Brooks, his personal lawyer and closest friend. "The local news is tearing you apart. Word of the ambush on the mountain pass just hit police scanners. Half the board of directors is calling for an emergency vote to strip you of your CEO title by dawn."

"Let them try," Adrian answered, his voice cold, commanding, and utterly fearless. "Are you secure, Ethan?"

"I am, but that's not the primary issue," Ethan rushed on, the sound of frantic keyboard clicking bleeding through the speaker. "Sophia Blake—the investigative journalist—intercepted police dispatch files from the ambush site. She knows about the professional-grade tactical gear left behind by the shooters. She’s coming after the story, Adrian, and she thinks the failed wedding and this hit are connected."

Adrian’s eyes darted sideways, locking onto Lena in the dim light of the dashboard. A dangerous, calculating plan formed instantly in his mind.

"Don't block Sophia," Adrian instructed smoothly. "Bring her to us."

"Are you insane?" Ethan hissed over the line. "She'll broadcast your location to the entire city!"

"Good," Adrian replied, a cold, hard edge slicing through his tone. "The people who tried to kill us tonight are hiding in the shadows of the Hayes board and the Carter family. It's time to drag them out into the light."

Adrian cut the connection before Ethan could argue further. He turned his full attention back to Lena, his hand reaching out to gently cup the back of her neck, pulling her just a fraction closer.

"The rules of the game have changed," Adrian whispered, his gaze burning into hers with absolute resolve. "They wanted a scandal. We're going to give them a war."

The high-beam headlights flared blindingly through the shattered glass of the SUV, casting long, menacing shadows across the pine trees. Lena held her breath, the metallic taste of fear sharp on her tongue as Adrian’s arm locked like steel in front of her.Outside, heavy tactical boots crunched against the freezing gravel."Adrian Hayes!" a sharp, female voice echoed through the dark woods, devoid of any military filter. "Lower your weapon before your lawyer has a heart attack in my back seat!"Adrian didn't lower the firearm, but the lethal tension in his posture dialed back just a fraction. Through the glare, a slender woman in a sharp trench coat stepped into view, holding her hands shoulder-high. Behind her, Ethan Brooks scrambled out of the passenger side of the unmarked transport, looking pale, disheveled, and completely out of his element."Sophia," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly tone as he pushed the damaged SUV door open and stepped out into the ni

"You just painted a glowing neon sign on our backs!" Lena’s voice trembled, slicing through the heavy, suffocating silence of the ruined SUV the exact second Adrian ended the encrypted call. "You want an investigative journalist here? In the middle of a pitch-black forest? While the professional assassins who just unloaded a dozen armor-piercing rounds into this car are actively hunting us with military rifles?!" Adrian did not flinch at her rising panic. He turned his imposing frame toward her, the dim amber light of the dashboard casting harsh, sharp shadows across the fierce, unapologetic angles of his face. "If we keep blindly running in the dark, Lena, we remain prey," Adrian stated, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that vibrated through the cramped cabin. "And I do not play prey. If they want a ghost from eight years ago, I am going to give them a public resurrection they will never forget." He reached across the center console, his movements rigid and tightly controlled. H

With terrifying, raw physical strength, Adrian hauled Lena off the plush seat, dragging her down into the cramped footwell beneath the dashboard. He immediately covered her body entirely with his broad, muscular frame, using himself as a human shield as an absolute barrage of armor, piercing rounds slammed mercilessly into the side of the armored SUV. Metal groaned under the assault, sparks flew in a blinding spray, and the suffocating smell of sulfur, cordite, and burning rubber filled the tig

It was the darkest corner of her mind, locked away behind years of therapy and forced smiles. No one knew. Not Emma. Not her mother. Not even the doctors who claimed her trauma was just a side effect of a concussion. She shoved violently against Adrian’s chest, her nails digging into his suit. "Who are you?! Are you one of them? Did they send you to finish it? Answer me!"Adrian did not flinch. He kept his massive frame hovering over her, his hands caging her wrists against the seat. His eyes scanned every millimeter of her panicked face."I'm not one of them," he said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "I’m the reason you were there.""Liar!" she spat, kicking at his legs.
