The high-beam headlights flared blindingly through the shattered glass of the SUV, casting long, menacing shadows across the pine trees. Lena held her breath, the metallic taste of fear sharp on her tongue as Adrian’s arm locked like steel in front of her.

Outside, heavy tactical boots crunched against the freezing gravel.

"Adrian Hayes!" a sharp, female voice echoed through the dark woods, devoid of any military filter. "Lower your weapon before your lawyer has a heart attack in my back seat!"

Adrian didn't lower the firearm, but the lethal tension in his posture dialed back just a fraction. Through the glare, a slender woman in a sharp trench coat stepped into view, holding her hands shoulder-high. Behind her, Ethan Brooks scrambled out of the passenger side of the unmarked transport, looking pale, disheveled, and completely out of his element.

"Sophia," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly tone as he pushed the damaged SUV door open and stepped out into the night. "You're late."

"I had to dodge three police cruisers and a private security detail that was trailing Ethan," Sophia Blake replied coolly, her sharp eyes taking in the bullet-riddled frame of the vehicle, the pools of dried blood, and finally Lena, who was slowly emerging from the passenger side. "My God. The dispatch reports didn't do this justice. This wasn't a warning, Adrian. This was an execution attempt."

"And it failed," Adrian stated coldly, stepping between Sophia and Lena to block the reporter's piercing gaze. "Which means whoever hired those men is currently panicking. That makes them sloppy. And that is where you come in."

Sophia crossed her arms, her investigative instincts instantly flaring. "Ethan said you wanted to talk, but let's be clear, Hayes. I don't print corporate PR spin. I want the truth. Why did you walk out on Emma Carter at the altar today? And why is someone throwing military-grade hardware at you hours later?"

"Because the two events are the exact same play," Lena spoke up, her voice surprisingly steady as she stepped out from behind Adrian's protective frame. Her hands were still stained with gunpowder and Adrian's blood, but her eyes burned with a newfound, fierce resolve. "Julian Carter didn't want a marriage. He wanted the Hayes merger to cover up a decade of embezzlement and treason within his family's firm. And eight years ago... they tried to kill Adrian to cover it up the first time."

Sophia’s breath caught. She pulled a digital recorder from her coat pocket, her professional demeanor shifting into laser focus. "Eight years ago? The warehouse explosion that nearly killed Hayes? The media reported that as an industrial accident."

"It was an assassination attempt," Adrian corrected, his voice laced with venom. "And Lena was the witness who pulled me out of the fire. The Carters bought off board members, silenced witnesses, and wiped her identity clean to keep their empire from crumbling. Today, she remembered. And today, they realized their golden ticket was gone."

Sophia looked between Lena's determined face and Adrian's blood-soaked bandage, the sheer magnitude of the story locking into place. "If I publish this... if I drop the financial receipts Ethan gathered alongside Lena's eye-witness account of the night of the attack... it will tear the Carter family to shreds by sunrise. But it will also put a target on all of our backs that will never go away."

"The target is already there," Adrian said, stepping closer to Sophia, his massive presence towering over the reporter. "The only difference is whether we sit in the dark waiting to be shot, or we burn their entire house to the ground first. Do you want the story of the century or not?"

Sophia didn't hesitate. She hit record on her device and looked straight at Lena. "Start from the beginning. Tell me everything you remember about the warehouse."

Before Lena could utter her first word, the distant, frantic chirp of a police band radio inside Sophia's transport cut through the air. Ethan sprinted toward them, holding up his tablet, his face drained of all color.

"Adrian, stop!" Ethan yelled, his voice cracking with sheer panic. "Turn on the news right now. They just issued a warrant!"

Sophia pulled up a live feed on her phone, turning the screen toward them. A breaking news banner flashed across the red display in bold, terrifying letters:

**BREAKING: CEO ADRIAN HAYES WANTED FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER AND KIDNAPPING OF LENA CARTER.**

"They flipped the narrative," Sophia whispered, her eyes wide with shock. "They're telling the public you snapped at the altar, killed your driver, and took Lena by force into the mountains. The police aren't coming to arrest you, Adrian... they have shoot-on-sight authorization."

Lena looked at Adrian, her heart plummeting into her stomach. The trap had closed. They weren't just running from assassins anymore—they were running from the entire city.

Adrian looked at the screen, a slow, terrifying smile curving the edge of his lips.

"Then let them come," Adrian whispered, his dark eyes locking onto Lena's with absolute, unwavering devotion. "It's time to show them what happens when you corner a monster."

"You just painted a glowing neon sign on our backs!" Lena’s voice trembled, slicing through the heavy, suffocating silence of the ruined SUV the exact second Adrian ended the encrypted call. "You want an investigative journalist here? In the middle of a pitch-black forest? While the professional assassins who just unloaded a dozen armor-piercing rounds into this car are actively hunting us with military rifles?!" Adrian did not flinch at her rising panic. He turned his imposing frame toward her, the dim amber light of the dashboard casting harsh, sharp shadows across the fierce, unapologetic angles of his face. "If we keep blindly running in the dark, Lena, we remain prey," Adrian stated, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that vibrated through the cramped cabin. "And I do not play prey. If they want a ghost from eight years ago, I am going to give them a public resurrection they will never forget." He reached across the center console, his movements rigid and tightly controlled. H

The darkness inside the secluded SUV felt heavy, suffocating, and thick with secrets that had remained buried for nearly a decade.Lena stared down at where Adrian’s thumb was still tracing the jagged, pale line of her scar. Every instinct she possessed told her to pull away, to open the door and run into the dark wilderness, to go back to the predictable safety of her old life. But the bullet holes riddling the vehicle’s frame and the terrifying memory of the masked assassin on the highway were a brutal, unforgiving reminder: there was no going back. Her old life had been a comforting illusion, a carefully constructed lie built on manipulated memories and forged protection."Why me?" Lena whispered, her voice cracking as she finally lifted her gaze to meet his intense, dark eyes. "If I saved you eight years ago, why didn't anyone look for me? Why did my own medical records say I was recovering from a simple car accident in a completely different city?""Because the people who orchest

Her palms were raw, smeared with gunpowder and sticky warmth. She had just shot someone. With terrifying, raw physical strength, Adrian hauled Lena off the plush seat, dragging her down into the cramped footwell beneath the dashboard. He immediately covered her body entirely with his broad, muscular frame, using himself as a human shield as an absolute barrage of armor, piercing rounds slammed mercilessly into the side of the armored SUV. Metal groaned under the assault, sparks flew in a blinding spray, and the suffocating smell of sulfur, cordite, and burning rubber filled the tig

"How do you know about that?!" Lena’s scream tore through the soundproof cabin of the SUV, laced with paralyzing terror. The warehouse. The cold concrete. The stench of blood. The dying man. It was the darkest corner of her mind, locked away behind years of therapy and forced smiles. No one knew. Not Emma. Not her mother. Not even the doctors who claimed her trauma was just a side effect of a concussion. She shoved violently against Adrian’s chest, her nails digging into his suit. "Who are you?! Are you one of them? Did they send you to finish it? Answer me!"Adrian did not flinch. He kept his massive frame hovering over her, his hands caging her wrists against the seat. His eyes scanned every millimeter of her panicked face."I'm not one of them," he said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "I’m the reason you were there.""Liar!" she spat, kicking at his legs.
