Chapter 1

My soul was awakened by Mamma's joyful sobs.

I floated from the basement to the main living room in the mansion and saw my mother, Livia Trotta, holding my younger adopted sister, Arianna Capuano, while weeping bitterly.

"Oh god, my poor Arianna has suffered so much! Thank goodness we finally found you. Otherwise, who would have known how much you'd have gotten hurt!"

Arianna wouldn't stop sobbing quietly either. "I thought I wouldn't ever get to see you again, Mamma."

My elder brother, Giusto Capuano, patted her on the back with reddened eyes. "Don't worry, Arianna. Next time, I'll arrange for more Soldati to keep you safe from now on," he said.

I looked at Arianna. Her dress was a little dusty. But other than the dirt streaks on her face, she looked perfectly fine without even a scratch on her—a stark contrast to my condition in the downstairs basement.

Arianna wiped her tears away. "By the way, Giusto, where's Carlotta? I don't seem to have seen her anywhere."

"You don't have to care about her. She's probably just angry that her wedding had to be cancelled because we had to rescue you. I bet she's just hidden herself away, hoping that we'd go out and beg her to come back home next."

"But it's getting dark outside… Isn't it dangerous for a young woman like her to be outside on her own?"

My dad, Vittorino Capuano, waved his hand dismissively and said, "She'll come back on her own after she's thought things through. As for you, the doctor said that you need to rest more at home. You should stay at home and have a good rest."

I floated in between the two of them, reaching out to touch Papa's face, but my finger went right through him.

The warmth belonged to them. I didn't deserve any.

My fiance, Diego Atzori, stood at the door for a long time without saying anything.

Arianna then looked at him and began talking to him in a coquettish manner. There were still tears in her eyes as she said, "Did Carlotta contact you, Diego?"

Diego's face looked dark and a little ashen. "No. Her phone's been turned off."

"It's all my fault… If you didn't come out to save me, you and she would have already been married at your wedding ceremony by now—"

"Don't put it that way," Diego said, interrupting her. "No matter what important day it is, it's still not as important as your life. Carlotta will think things through by herself after she's calmed down."

"Let me send her a text message to apologize first. I hope that she'll come back home after she reads my message," Arianna said, taking out her phone to text me.

"I bet those three thugs aren't enough to keep you busy, right? Maybe I should just get more people to join in on the fun next time! Have fun rotting away in the basement!

"There can only be one Principessa in the Capuano Famiglia, and that will be me! I am also the only one who will be marrying Diego!"

I watched with wide eyes as she sent out the text message before deleting it from her chat window almost immediately.

Then, she composed a different text message saying, "I'm sorry, Carlotta! I was wrong. Hurry up and come home! Everyone's worried to death about you!"

After sending the second text message, she showed her phone to Mamma and said, "Mamma, do you think that Carlotta will forgive me after reading this text message?"

Mamma pulled her into a heartbroken hug and said, "It's Carlotta's fault for being ruthless and running away from her own wedding. It was never your fault to begin with. Oh, how I wish you were my biological daughter instead!"

I felt a pang of hurt in my chest.

Was I ruthless? Was I really as ruthless as they said I was?

Papa and Mamma had always felt sorry for Arianna because she had grown up mostly in the slums her whole life. After adopting her, they gave her all of their love, even more than what they reserved for me.

I had felt sorry for her in the past as well, so I never made a fuss about it.

It was supposed to be my wedding to Diego today. While I was about to set out for the church after getting ready at home, three masked men in black suddenly rushed into the mansion and dragged me straight down to the basement.

I was terrified, and I later learned that they were hired by the enemy Famiglia to capture me and torture me to my death.

I had promised them that I would give them as much money as they wanted as long as they let me go.

One of the masked men grinned slyly as he handed me my handphone.

"You have one chance to call someone. If someone comes to save you, then we will let you go."

I called Diego without hesitation.

"Diego… Save me… I've been kidnapped, please come back and save me…"

Diego sounded like he was panting heavily on the other end of the line, almost like he was running while answering my call.

"Carlotta Capuano! Arianna's life is way more important than our wedding! Stop it with your pathetic acting just to make yourself sound pitiful to get our attention!"

Then, he hung up on me.

The next two hours were like hell for me.

The thugs tore off my wedding dress, sliced every inch of my skin open with their sharp knives, and broke all four of my limbs.

I lay on the ground in a boneless heap. When the thugs saw that their mission was done, they immediately took to their heels and fled.

The basement door slammed heavily on me.

Blood wouldn't stop bleeding from my four broken limbs. I stared up at the ceiling as blood flowed down my ears.

If Arianna's life was important and worth saving, then was mine not after all?

I closed my eyes.

As it turned out, there was no actual difference between dying in my own basement and dying out in the streets.

Nobody knew or cared anyway.

And so, I bled to death in my wedding dress in the basement.

I recalled what my biology professor had taught me before. I knew that there were only 24 hours left before the stench of my corpse would fill the entire mansion.

Arianna's body was taken to a barren plot of land next to the Famiglia cemetery and buried there with no tombstone or funeral. The public statement made was that she had suffered a mental breakdown due to the trauma of her kidnapping, and thus, she was sent overseas to Yestates for treatment.Nobody questioned the statement at all.Papa seemed to have gotten decades older in just a few days. He began going to church every day and staying there all day long.Mamma also never smiled again. She locked up Arianna's old room and returned my room to its original state, dusting and cleaning it every day.Once, when she opened my wardrobe and saw all my clothes neatly folded up inside, she suddenly burst into tears."Carlotta! She's always been such a good daughter… She's never fought with Arianna over anything…"Mamma hugged my clothes like she was hugging me as she cried. "How… How could I not have taken her side all this time?"Giusto had completely changed. He used to have a very

"As for you…" Arianna said, looking at Diego, her voice softening a little."Did you know why I had to do this? Because I liked you. I've liked you ever since I first met you. But you? You only had eyes for Carlotta! You had no idea that I was always hanging around nearby every time you went out on dates with her."Diego looked at her the entire time, his eyes completely devoid of warmth."So, you killed her?" he asked, his voice as cold as ice."You all hated her! Why couldn't I kill her?" Arianna roared, waving her arms around like she'd lost her mind. "You'd believe me even if I framed her with all sorts of ridiculous allegations, and then you'd punish her so severely afterward! "So, what's the big deal if I killed her? She's better off dead! Isn't that right? Isn't it good that I'm the only daughter you have left now? I am the only Principessa of the Capuano Famiglia now!""We only punished her because you lied to us!" Papa roared, finally instilling some fear back in Ariann

Arianna's face turned pale. She opened her mouth as tears immediately welled up in her eyes."Giusto! I didn't send that text message! Someone must have taken my phone—yes! Carlotta must have stolen my phone then! She was trying to sow discord between us!""But we were all there when you sent the message. You were holding the phone in your own hands then," Giusto said."I-I don't know what she did… Maybe she used some kind of technology…""Then what about this?" Diego asked, producing another piece of paper from his pocket and slapping it down on the coffee table. It was a photocopy of the butler's key register. It clearly showed that on Carlotta and my wedding day, Arianna borrowed the key to the basement to store away some old clothes. The key was returned the next day.Arianna stared at the paper, unable to utter another word.Giusto stood up and started taking steps toward her."The basement is full of tools. You would never even give it a second glance on a normal day. Wha

Over the next three days, everyone in the mansion was only discussing one matter—was it really me who'd died?Giusto was the most adamant that it wasn't me. "It can't possibly be her. A body would take two or three days to decompose to that extent. But Carlotta had only been missing for a day!"Mamma heaved a sigh of relief. Then, she frowned and said, "But the wedding dress… and the ring—""They could have been forged," Giusto said, interrupting her."Don't you already know how many terrible things Carlotta has done in her lifetime? What's difficult about finding a corpse looking exactly like her, putting her wedding dress and ring on the body, and throwing it into the basement for us to find?"Her goal is to make us panic and feel remorseful about treating her this way. She just wants us to remember her and pay more attention to her henceforth!"Papa never spoke his mind and just remained quiet as he smoked his cigar.Arianna added in a small voice, "That's true. Carlotta's we

I looked at my family, frozen before my corpse, and felt a strange sense of pleasure in me.I had been waiting for this moment for such a long time. I'd wondered how my family, who had always loathed and despised me, would react when they discovered that I was truly dead. And yet, their first reaction was somewhat unexpected for me.Giusto immediately ran into the basement like a madman and kicked me hard in the leg."What the hell are you pretending to be dead for? Did you really think you'd be able to escape punishment for all the terrible things you've done just by playing dead?"Mamma's face also looked less ashen when she heard that. "That's right! Carlotta can't possibly be dead! Wake her up!"However, my twisted, mangled legs only moved weakly after the hard kick from Giusto, and I continued remaining still on the ground.Giusto's face immediately drained of all color."Carlotta…"The only response he got was my eyes fixating on him, never blinking.Mamma let out a lou

Arianna quickly recovered from her allergy. The doctor applied the salve all over her arms. He even joked, "Signora Capuano is too weak. I didn't expect her arm to swell up so badly after just touching the stinging nettle. It's almost as if she scattered the nettle powder all over her arms on purpose."A flicker of panic appeared in Arianna's eyes.Fortunately for her, Papa, Mamma, and Giusto were all too worried about her arm that they didn't even hear what the doctor just said.Arianna hurriedly got rid of the doctor after he was done treating her. Then, she hugged her arms with red-rimmed eyes.Giusto roared, "Carlotta had better not come back! Otherwise, I'm going to teach her a proper lesson!"I floated in the air, listening to Arianna's accusations and everyone's condemnation against me, feeling a wave of helplessness washing over me.Meanwhile, Diego had come back to check Arianna's condition. His expression was visibly agitated. "I'm going down to the basement to take a
