LOGINZAYN
Grandma hardly ever showed up at my house unannounced, especially since her condition had worsened.
But today, she had arrived without warning, and I hadn’t even had the opportunity to prepare her for Peyton’s presence.
I dragged a hand down my face, fighting the frustration building inside me.
Now, thanks to my grandmother’s outburst, Peyton was bound to have questions.
Fortunately, there was one convenient explanation I could use.
Her dementia.
I hated myself a little for using my grandmother’s condition as an excuse to conceal the truth, but I couldn’t afford to let Peyton discover who Elena was or what had happened between us. The past was buried for a reason, and I intended to keep it there.
A frustrated cry from outside interrupted my thoughts.
I glanced toward the window and spotted my grandmother sitting in the back seat of her car, gesturing angrily at the driver while Aunt Margaret attempted to calm her from beside her.
I had already gone outside once to ask the driver to take her home, but she had thrown a fit the moment he suggested leaving. She had refused to get into the car, insisting she wouldn’t leave until I sent Peyton away.
Now, I had no choice but to deal with the situation myself.
With a weary sigh, I headed outside.
“Zayn!” Grandma called the moment she saw me approaching. “Tell the driver to stop touching my things. We’re not going anywhere until you listen to me!”
The driver immediately stepped back, looking relieved to see me.
I opened the car door and crouched beside my grandmother, taking her trembling hands in mine.
“Hey, Grandma,” I murmured. “Look at me.”
She turned toward me, her eyes still shining with anger.
“Why are you protecting her?” she demanded. “You know what she did to you. You know how much she hurt you, and yet you’ve brought her back into your house!”
I swallowed the bitter taste in my mouth.
“I know you’re upset, but you’re safe. Nobody is going to hurt you.”
“Don’t lie to me, Zayn!”
“I’m not lying.” I brushed a loose strand of silver hair away from her face. “I’m right here, aren’t I? Nothing is going to happen to you while I’m here.”
Her expression wavered, and for a moment, I caught a glimpse of the grandmother who used to sit beside me when I was a child, patiently listening to my complaints and telling me that no problem was too big to overcome.
Those moments seemed increasingly rare these days.
“I don’t want her near you,” she whispered, gripping my fingers. “Promise me you won’t let her hurt you again.”
My chest tightened.
There were things I wished I could explain to her, but her mind had already dragged her back to a time I desperately wanted to leave behind.
“I promise I’ll take care of myself,” I assured her, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “Now, why don’t we get you comfortable? You’ve had a long day.”
She stared at me for several seconds before her shoulders gradually relaxed.
The driver approached with a small packet of medication and held it out to me.
“Sir, her prescribed dose,” he said quietly.
I nodded, checking the label before helping my grandmother take her medication with the water Margaret handed me. We waited a few minutes while I kept her company, rubbing soothing circles over the back of her hand as she muttered occasionally about Elena.
Eventually, her eyelids began to droop.
I wrapped my arms around her, holding her carefully as her breathing grew slower and more even. Within minutes, she had fallen asleep against me.
A long breath escaped my lungs.
Finally.
I leaned back against the seat, allowing myself a moment of relief as I watched her peaceful face. The medication would help her rest, and hopefully, when she woke up, the worst of her agitation would have passed.
But my relief didn’t last long.
Because while my grandmother slept, I couldn’t stop thinking about Peyton waiting inside the house.
She had already witnessed enough to become suspicious, and I knew her curiosity wouldn’t disappear simply because I had asked her to forget what happened.
I would have to be careful to keep Peyton In my present and far away from the truth.

PEYTON“Elena?” I muttered in confusion.“Zayn, what is this slut doing here?”For a moment, I thought the elderly woman had mistaken me for someone else. Her eyes widened with such genuine shock that she took a step backward, clutching the handle of her handbag as though she had just seen a ghost.I glanced behind me, wondering if another woman had entered the room without my noticing, but the hallway was empty.“Grandma,” Zayn said, his voice suddenly sharp. She barely seemed to hear him. Her gaze remained fixed on me, and the longer she stared, the more unsettled I became. Something was frightening about the way she looked at me, as though she recognized my face but despised everything it represented.“Why are you standing there pretending you don’t know me?” she demanded, her voice trembling with anger. “Have you come back to finish what you started?”My stomach tightened.“I think there’s been a misunderstanding,” I said carefully, rising from the sofa. “My name is Peyton, not El
CHAPTER FIVEPEYTONFaith was sleeping when I arrived at the hospital. Her surgery had been scheduled and was all that mattered. The moment the hospital confirmed that the payment had been received, the knot that had been sitting in my chest finally loosened. For the first time since she passed out, I felt a tiny flicker of hope. I stood beside Faith’s bed and watched her sleeping face.“You’ll be okay. Faith. You’re a fighter,” I whispered.“Peyton?”Her eyes slowly opened as she adjusted to the light.“I’m here.”I smiled and reached for her hand.“I heard the doctor talking about the surgery.“How did you get the money?”she asked, her voice weak.I hesitated. I couldn’t tell her the truth, not right now“I found a way.” I croaked.“Pey…”“Don’t worry about it.” I squeezed her hand. “Just concentrate on getting better.”“You’re hiding something.”She stared at me suspiciously.“I’ll explain everything when you’re stronger.”Faith squeezed my hand and let out a small smile.“Whatever it
CHAPTER FOURZAYNThe moment the words left my mouth, Peyton stared at me as though I had just suggested something completely absurd.“Get married?”“Yes,”I nodded.“You met me yesterday.”“Technically, I met you yesterday morning and again tonight.”“I think you’ve lost your mind.” She shook her head and looked away.“I’m trying to solve a problem,”“I can’t marry you. I was almost married yesterday and today, you’re proposing something so ridiculous to a stranger?” She scoffed. Just as I was about to reply, her phone began to ring. I watched silently as she answered the call and listened to what the receiver said.“What!” She suddenly jumped out of the chair. My eyes widened with interest as I watched her expression change to horror.“I’m on my way,” she hung up the call. She was about to run off when I grabbed her arm.“What!” She glanced at me with a look of irritation on her face.“What happened? You look so upset,”“It’s my cousin. She passed out and is currently at the hospit
CHAPTER THREEPEYTONI didn’t sleep at night. By morning, my eyes were swollen, my head was pounding, and my wedding dress was still lying in a crumpled heap on the floor.I stared at it from where I was sitting on Holly’s bed.Yesterday, it was the most beautiful thing I’d ever owned.Today, I couldn’t stand looking at it.The door opened and Holly stepped inside carrying a tray.“Morning, Pey. I brought breakfast.”“I don’t want it.”She placed the tray on the nightstand anyway.“You need to eat something.”I sat up slowly. The room spun for a second and I pressed my fingers against my temple.“Gosh, my head hurts.”“Are you still feeling sick?”Holly asked, her voice laced with concern.“A little.”“Then we’re going back to the hospital.”“No!” I groaned.“Pey. You nearly collapsed yesterday. You’ve been nauseous for days.”“It’s probably stress.”“Maybe.But I’m not taking chances. We’re leaving now”***Less than an hour later, we were back at the hospital. The nurse checked my blood
CHAPTER TWOPEYTONI covered my mouth with both hands, but the sob that escaped me was still loud enough to make Holly flinch.“Peyton…”“I’m fine,” I whispered automatically. The lie barely left my lips before another sob tore through my chest. How could I possibly be fine when my life has fallen apart.Holly climbed into the driver’s seat and immediately locked the doors.“You need to get your mind off this.Where do you want to go?”Home felt unbearable. The hotel was worse. And I couldn’t imagine returning to the venue where dozens of people were probably still waiting for me to walk down an aisle that no longer existed.“Anywhere,” I whispered.Holly started the car. For several minutes, neither of us spoke. My phone continued vibrating in my lap.I didn’t need to check it to know what was happening. The wedding guests were probably calling to find out where I was. I switched my phone off.“I don’t want to talk to anyone.”“You don’t have to.” Holly reached over and squeezed my ha
