Chapter 11: Room 214

The dial tone echoed through the silent study.

Damien slowly lowered the receiver, his expression unreadable.

Lucas was the first to speak.

"'You've been chasing the wrong Blackwood.' What does that mean?"

Damien looked toward the rain-soaked window.

"It means whoever called us wants us to question everything."

Ava tightened her grip on the letter in her hands.

"No."

Both men looked at her.

"They wanted us to hear one thing."

She held up her mother's letter.

"St. Mary's Hospital."

Damien nodded.

"We're done chasing ghosts."

"We find the living."

---

Less than an hour later...

The Blackwood convoy pulled into the parking lot of St. Mary's Hospital.

The aging building looked untouched by time.

Its faded walls carried decades of forgotten stories.

Ava stared at the entrance.

"This is where I was born."

Damien glanced at her.

"And where someone has been waiting for eighteen years."

Lucas led the way toward the reception desk.

A middle-aged nurse smiled politely.

"Good afternoon. How may I help you?"

Damien placed the baby bracelet on the counter.

"We're looking for Room 214."

The nurse's smile disappeared.

"I'm sorry..."

"There isn't a Room 214."

Ava frowned.

"What?"

The nurse checked the computer.

"Our second floor only goes up to Room 213."

Lucas exchanged a glance with Damien.

"So my mother's letter was wrong?"

The nurse hesitated.

"Not exactly."

She lowered her voice.

"There used to be a Room 214."

"When this hospital was renovated twelve years ago, that entire wing was sealed."

"Why?"

Before the nurse could answer, an elderly voice interrupted.

"Because some memories are too dangerous to erase."

They turned.

An elderly janitor stood at the end of the hallway, leaning on a mop.

His faded name tag read:

Samuel.

His eyes settled on the bracelet in Ava's hand.

"I wondered when someone would finally come."

---

Samuel led them through a quiet corridor rarely used by visitors.

Dust covered the windows.

The air smelled of old paint and disinfectant.

He stopped before a plain white wall.

"There."

Ava looked confused.

"There's nothing here."

"There used to be."

Samuel reached behind an old fire extinguisher and pressed a hidden switch.

A low mechanical click echoed.

Part of the wall slowly slid aside.

Behind it...

A narrow hallway appeared.

Lucas stared in disbelief.

"A hidden ward?"

Samuel nodded.

"They closed it after... the incident."

At the end of the hallway hung a faded metal sign.

ROOM 214

---

The room was frozen in time.

The bed remained neatly made.

Medical equipment sat covered in white sheets.

A wheelchair stood beside the window.

Someone had preserved the room exactly as it had been years ago.

Ava's heartbeat quickened.

"There isn't anyone here."

Samuel smiled sadly.

"Not anymore."

"What do you mean?"

"He waited."

"For who?"

"For you."

Silence filled the room.

"He came here every birthday."

"Every Christmas."

"Every New Year."

"He believed one day you'd discover the truth."

Ava felt tears sting her eyes.

"Who?"

Samuel walked to a small bedside cabinet and opened the drawer.

Inside was a worn leather notebook.

Across the cover, written in neat handwriting, were the words:

For My Daughter

Ava's breath caught.

"My daughter?"

Samuel carefully handed her the notebook.

"He asked me to give this to you..."

"...if you ever found Room 214."

Her fingers shook as she opened the first page.

> To my little girl,

If you're reading this, then I wasn't strong enough to stay alive until you found me.

Please don't blame your mother.

She only did what she believed would save your life.

The people who wanted you dead were already watching the hospital before you were even born.

Ava stopped breathing.

Damien gently turned the page.

There was only one sentence.

> Your real name is...

The rest of the page had been torn away.

"No..." Ava whispered.

"Not again."

Samuel's face fell.

"It was complete."

"I saw it years ago."

Lucas looked up sharply.

"What happened?"

Samuel's voice trembled.

"Three nights ago..."

"...someone broke into this room."

"They stole several pages."

Damien's eyes hardened.

"Victor."

"I never saw his face," Samuel admitted.

"But he knew exactly which pages to take."

Suddenly, footsteps echoed in the hallway.

Fast.

Heavy.

Several people were running toward Room 214.

Lucas immediately moved in front of Ava.

Damien stepped toward the doorway.

The footsteps stopped.

A young nurse appeared, breathing heavily.

"Mr. Blackwood!"

"What is it?"

"The hospital director asked me to find you immediately."

"Why?"

She swallowed nervously.

"Because a woman was brought into the emergency department fifteen minutes ago."

Ava's heart pounded.

"Who is she?"

The nurse looked directly at Ava.

"She gave only one message before she lost consciousness."

"What message?"

The nurse took a deep breath.

"She said..."

> 'Tell Ava... they found me before I could tell her the truth.'

Ava's eyes widened.

"My mother."

The nurse slowly nodded.

"But..."

"What?"

"She wasn't alone."

The room fell silent.

"There was another woman with her."

Damien frowned.

"Who?"

The nurse's face turned pale.

"We checked her identification."

"Her name is..."

She looked at Ava.

"...Ava Carter."
