Chapter 7: The File in the Safe

last update Date de publication: 2026-07-23 23:39:04

The rain had stopped.

Only the sound of tires cutting through wet pavement filled the silence inside Damien's Rolls-Royce.

Ava glanced sideways.

Damien hadn't spoken since they left the estate.

His jaw was tight.

His fingers rested on the steering wheel, but she noticed the slight tension in them.

He was worried.

Not about the media.

Not about the lawsuit.

About what they were about to discover.

"Can I ask you something?" Ava broke the silence.

Damien nodded.

"How much did your grandfather tell you about me?"

He kept his eyes on the road.

"Nothing."

"Nothing?"

"I only remember seeing your name once."

"When?"

"I was twelve."

She frowned.

"My grandfather kept a locked safe in his study."

"I opened it by accident."

"There was a file."

"Your name was written on it."

Ava felt a knot form in her stomach.

"And he never explained?"

"He only said..."

Damien's voice grew quieter.

"...that some promises take years to fulfill."

Neither of them spoke again.

---

Blackwood Manor stood atop a cliff overlooking the sea.

Unlike Damien's modern mansion, this estate carried the weight of history.

Stone walls.

Ancient oak trees.

Towering windows glowing softly in the night.

As the gates opened, an elderly butler hurried outside.

"Mr. Blackwood."

"Sir."

Damien stopped walking.

"Good evening, Harris."

"It's late."

"I know."

"I need access to my grandfather's study."

The old butler hesitated.

"I'm afraid your grandfather instructed that no one enter after his passing."

Damien looked at him.

"Not even me?"

Harris lowered his head.

"There was... one exception."

He reached into his coat and produced a brass key.

"He said..."

"...if you ever came looking for the Carter file..."

"...I was to give you this."

Ava's breath caught.

"He expected us?"

Harris looked at her with kind eyes.

"I believe he expected you."

---

The study smelled of old books and cedar wood.

Everything remained exactly as it had years ago.

Even the grandfather clock still ticked steadily.

Damien walked toward the portrait hanging above the fireplace.

He pressed a hidden latch behind the frame.

A soft click echoed.

Part of the bookshelf slowly slid aside.

A hidden room.

Ava stared in amazement.

"You knew about this?"

"I found it years ago."

"But it was empty."

Until tonight.

Inside stood a massive steel safe.

Its digital screen lit up.

PASSWORD REQUIRED.

Damien entered his grandfather's birthday.

ACCESS DENIED.

He tried another date.

Nothing.

A third.

Still nothing.

Lucas sighed.

"We may need a locksmith."

"No."

Ava stepped closer.

Her eyes settled on an inscription engraved beneath the keypad.

"The future begins with the past."

She frowned.

"The past..."

Her eyes drifted toward an old family photograph sitting on the desk.

Damien's grandparents.

His parents.

A little boy.

The date beneath it read:

May 18.

Without thinking, she entered the numbers.

518.

The safe beeped.

ACCESS GRANTED.

The heavy door slowly swung open.

Damien looked at Ava.

"How did you know?"

"I didn't."

Inside the safe sat only three items.

A silver pocket watch.

An old leather journal.

And...

A cream-colored file.

Across the front were the words:

AVA CARTER

Ava's hands trembled as Damien opened it.

The first page wasn't a business document.

It was a birth certificate.

She frowned.

"This isn't mine."

The baby girl's name had been blacked out with thick ink.

Only the date of birth remained.

Exactly the same as Ava's.

"What is this?"

Lucas turned the page.

Every photograph inside had been deliberately cut in half.

Someone had removed another child from every picture.

Only one image remained untouched.

It showed two newborn babies lying side by side in a hospital nursery.

One tag read:

Baby Carter.

The second tag had been torn away.

A folded letter slipped from the file.

Damien carefully unfolded it.

The handwriting was unmistakably his grandfather's.

> To my grandson,

If you're reading this, then I've failed to protect the truth long enough.

Ava Carter is not who she believes she is.

She has spent her entire life living under another child's name.

Do not trust anyone until you discover what happened at St. Mary's Hospital eighteen years ago.

Especially...

The letter stopped.

The bottom half had been ripped away.

"No..." Damien whispered.

"The rest is missing."

Ava's heart pounded.

"Living under another child's name?"

"What does that even mean?"

Before anyone could answer—

The lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A loud crash echoed from somewhere downstairs.

Lucas immediately pulled a flashlight from his pocket.

"Sir..."

"We're not alone."

Footsteps echoed through the hallway.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Someone was inside the manor.

Damien quickly closed the file.

"Stay behind me."

Another crash.

Closer this time.

Then—

A gunshot shattered the silence.

The study window exploded inward.

Glass rained across the floor.

Ava screamed as Damien threw her behind the heavy desk.

Lucas reached for his weapon.

Outside, a black-clad figure disappeared into the darkness.

But not before tossing a small metal object into the room.

It rolled across the wooden floor and stopped at Damien's feet.

A flash grenade.

His eyes widened.

"Get down!"

The room erupted in blinding white light.
