The grand hall suddenly felt suffocating. Elara stood frozen as Selena Blackwood’s sharp gaze examined her like a puzzle waiting to be solved. The woman’s confidence filled the room in a way that made Elara feel exposed. Selena circled her slowly. Not rudely. Not aggressively. But carefully. Like a hunter studying prey.

“Adrian,” Selena said casually, “you didn’t tell me your bride would be… different.”

Adrian’s expression hardened. “Selena, that’s enough.”

She ignored him again. Her eyes stayed fixed on Elara’s face. “Different can be interesting though,” she continued lightly. “Sometimes the unexpected makes life far more entertaining.”

Elara forced herself to stay calm. If Selena suspected something, panic would only make it worse. “It’s nice to meet you,” Elara said politely.

Selena stopped walking. “Is it?” Her smile was small but sharp.

“Yes.”

“Funny,” Selena said, tilting her head slightly. “I thought my brother would marry someone much louder.”

Elara frowned slightly. “Louder?”

“Yes.”

Selena’s eyes gleamed with amusement. “The woman he was supposed to marry loved attention.”

Adrian’s voice cut through the conversation. “Selena.” This time the warning in his tone was clear.

She finally turned toward him. “What?” she asked innocently.

“Stop interrogating my wife.” The word wife sounded deliberate. Firm.

Selena raised an eyebrow. “My apologies,” she said lightly. But the apology didn’t sound sincere. She turned back to Elara. “Well then, welcome to the family.” Her smile widened slightly. “I’m sure we’ll get to know each other very well.” Something in her voice made Elara uneasy.

A few minutes later, Selena disappeared upstairs. But the tension she left behind lingered. Elara exhaled slowly. “She knows something.” Adrian looked completely unconcerned. “She suspects something.” “That’s worse.”

He walked toward the staircase calmly. “She suspects everyone. It’s part of her personality.”

Elara followed him. “That didn’t feel like suspicion.”

“It was curiosity.”

“And curiosity leads to answers.”

Adrian stopped halfway up the stairs. He turned to face her. “And answers,” he said quietly, “only matter if someone proves them.”

Elara crossed her arms slightly. “So your sister is just going to investigate me?”

“Most likely.”

“That doesn’t bother you?”

Adrian shrugged. “No.”

Her frustration grew. “Why not?”

“Because,” he said calmly, “I’m the only one who knows the full truth.”

She blinked. “What do you mean?”

His eyes darkened slightly. “I knew Lillian was planning to run away.”

Elara stared at him in disbelief. “You knew?”

“Yes.”

Her mind spun. “Then why didn’t you stop her?”

“Because it saved me the trouble.”

“Trouble of what?”

Adrian looked down at her thoughtfully. “Ending the engagement myself.”

The answer stunned her. “You didn’t want to marry her?”

“No.”

“Then why agree to it?”

“Business.” He continued walking upstairs.

Elara hurried after him. “So the marriage was never about love.”

Adrian chuckled softly. “Love rarely plays a role in marriages like mine.” His honesty was unsettling. They reached the second floor, where a long hallway stretched across the mansion.

Adrian stopped in front of a large double door. “This is your room.”

Elara blinked. “My room?”

“Yes.”

She hesitated. “I thought… we were married.”

“We are.”

“So why separate rooms?”

Adrian opened the door. “Because forcing a stranger to share a bed would be uncomfortable.” His calm practicality surprised her. Inside, the room was breathtaking. Tall windows overlooked the gardens. Soft cream-colored furniture filled the space, and the bed was large enough to fit four people comfortably.

Elara stepped inside slowly. “This room is bigger than my entire apartment.”

Adrian leaned casually against the doorway. “You’ll adjust.”

She turned to face him. “Why are you being kind?”

The question slipped out before she could stop it.

He looked mildly amused. “Do you prefer cruelty?”

“No.”

“Then there’s your answer.”

She studied him carefully. “You’re not what I expected.”

“What did you expect?”

“A powerful man forced into a marriage with the wrong woman.”

“And?”

“And I expected you to be angry.”

His lips curved slightly. “I’m rarely angry.”

“Then what are you?”

His eyes held hers. “Interested.”

Her heart skipped. “In what?”

“You.”

She blinked. “Why?”

“Because,” he said quietly, “you walked into this marriage believing it was a mistake.”

“It is.”

“Maybe.” His gaze softened slightly. “But mistakes sometimes become opportunities.”

She frowned. “That sounds suspicious.”

He laughed softly. “Good.”

“Good?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re cautious.” He straightened from the door. “That means you’ll survive here.”

“Survive?” The word made her uneasy.

“Living in this family requires strength,” Adrian said simply.

“And if I don’t have it?”

“You do.”

“How do you know?”

His answer came without hesitation. “You walked down that aisle.”

Elara looked down at her hands. “I did it for my family.”

“Exactly.”

Adrian pushed away from the doorway. “I’ll see you at dinner in an hour.” He started to leave. But before he could step away, Elara spoke. “Adrian.”

He paused. “Yes?”

“Why didn’t you expose me when you realized I wasn’t Lillian?”

He looked back at her. For a moment, his expression became unreadable. Then he said something that made her heart race. “Because I wanted to see what would happen.”

“What do you mean?”

His smile returned slowly. “I was curious.”

“About what?”

His voice lowered slightly. “About the woman brave enough to marry a stranger under someone else’s name.”

Her breath caught. “And?”

“And,” he said quietly, “I think this marriage might become very interesting.” Then he walked away. Leaving Elara alone in the enormous room. Her mind swirled with questions. With doubts. With strange feelings she didn’t understand. This marriage had begun with lies. But something deep inside her whispered a dangerous thought. Maybe fate had made the mistake on purpose. And maybe…Adrian Blackwood was not the enemy she expected.

The storm didn’t stop. Rain hammered against the mansion windows as the last of the gunfire faded into the night. The attackers had retreated—but not defeated. Not even close. Inside, the Blackwood mansion looked like a battlefield. Broken glass covered the floors. Smoke lingered in the air. Guards moved quickly, securing every entrance, checking for survivors, dragging away the bodies of the fallen intruders. And in the middle of it all—Adrian stood, bleeding. “Elara,” he said firmly, “I’m fine.”“You were shot,” she whispered, her hands trembling as she pressed cloth against his shoulder.“It barely grazed me.”“That’s not ‘barely’!”Victor leaned against the wall nearby, arms crossed, watching with unsettling calm. “He’ll live,” he said casually. “Unfortunately.”Adrian shot him a glare. “This isn’t a joke.”Victor shrugged. “I’m not joking. I’m observing.”Elara ignored him. “Sit down,” she ordered Adrian. For a moment, he looked like he might argue. Then he sighed and sat on the

The storm arrived just after midnight. Thunder rolled across the sky, shaking the tall windows of the Blackwood mansion. Rain poured down in heavy sheets, turning the elegant gardens into shadows and silver streaks. Inside the mansion, the atmosphere was just as tense and this time it was more.Security guards moved constantly through the halls. Lights remained on in every corridor. Adrian had doubled the guards at the gates and installed new surveillance systems within hours of Victor’s warning. Yet despite all the protection, Elara couldn't sleep. I mean who could sleep with the situation at hand. She sat near the bedroom window, wrapped in a soft robe, watching the rain fall over the estate. Her mind kept replaying Victor’s words. Every shadow might hide someone trying to kill you.The bedroom door opened quietly. Adrian stepped inside. Even in the dim light, his presence filled the room with strength and authority. His shirt sleeves were rolled up, and tension still lined his face

The tension in front of the Blackwood mansion was suffocating. Elara stood beside Adrian, her heart pounding as Victor’s words echoed in her mind. The ones who killed our father. She looked at Adrian. His expression had become unreadable, the calm mask he used whenever danger approached. But she could feel the storm building beneath it.“You're lying,” Adrian said coldly to Victor.Victor chuckled softly. “You always did underestimate them.”“I buried those people years ago.”“No,” Victor corrected. “You buried the evidence not the people.”The wind stirred through the trees lining the mansion driveway. Elara stepped slightly closer to Adrian. “Adrian… what is he talking about?”Adrian didn’t answer immediately. Victor did. “Our father wasn’t just a businessman,” he said smoothly. “The Blackwood empire was built on things much darker than Elara probably knows.”Adrian’s voice snapped like steel. “That’s enough.”Victor’s eyes glinted. “You never told her, did you?”Elara felt her stom

  • The Bride of the Wrong Name   Chapter 16: The Peace That Didn't Last

For the first time since the wedding, the Blackwood mansion was quiet. Not the uneasy silence Elara had grown used to during the months of scandals and threats. This time the silence felt peaceful. Warm sunlight spilled across the marble floors of the mansion as Elara walked slowly through the garden. The roses Adrian had planted years ago were blooming again, filling the air with a sweet fragrance. She closed her eyes briefly. Life had finally settled. Lillian had disappeared after losing the legal battle. The media frenzy had faded. The whispers in high society had moved on to new scandals. For once, Elara and Adrian were simply husband and wife. But peace, Elara had learned, never lasted long in the Blackwood world. Behind her, strong arms wrapped gently around her waist. She smiled instantly. “Adrian.”His deep voice rumbled softly near her ear. “You escaped the house again.”“I needed fresh air.”He turned her to face him. Adrian Blackwood looked just as powerful as the day she m

The morning sun filtered through the Blackwood mansion’s tall windows, casting a warm glow over the grand hall. After the chaos of the past days—the scandals, the threats, and Lillian’s final failed attempt—Elara finally felt a sense of peace. Adrian stood beside her, perfectly composed, yet there was a softness in his gaze reserved only for her. They had faced every obstacle together, and now, at last, it felt like their life could truly begin.“Elara,” Adrian said, his voice low but steady, “we’ve survived a lot. But today… today is about us. About what we’ve earned and what we’ve chosen.”Elara’s heart fluttered. She had dreamed of moments like this—quiet, safe, intimate—but never imagined them after such a storm. “I… I’m ready,” she whispered, her hands clasping his.Adrian smiled, a mixture of warmth and adoration in his dark eyes. “You’ve always been ready. And you’ve proven it every single day.” He guided her toward the sunlit garden where their wedding had begun under uncertai

The mansion’s night air was thick with tension. Outside, the city lights glittered like distant stars, but inside, the weight of Lillian’s threats and the looming scandal pressed down on Elara and Adrian. Elara stood in the grand hallway, heart pounding. “I can’t believe she actually tried to come between us,” she whispered.Adrian stepped beside her, calm as always, but his eyes burned with quiet intensity. “This isn’t about belief, Elara. This is about action. And we need to fight—for us, for our marriage, for everything we’ve built.”Elara nodded, determination rising. “I’m ready.”He reached for her hand, gripping it firmly. “Good. Because I won’t let anyone take you from me. Not Lillian, not the media, not anyone.” The two of them walked together toward the study, where Adrian’s legal team and Selena had been coordinating responses to the latest attacks.Selena smirked as they entered. “I see you two have decided to face the storm together.”“Yes,” Adrian said simply. “It’s time
