When my eyes snapped open after the confrontation with Varyn, I dropped from where I knelt and ended up lying flat on the floor, exhaustion sinking into every part of me. Still—through all of that, the joy of having my wolf back was undeniable.

And now Damon could actually help.

I turned my head slightly, and my gaze landed on the three pairs of eyes staring down at me in silence, like they were waiting for me to say the first word. So I did.

I sucked in a sharp breath and forced myself upright so I was facing them. I lifted my healed shoulder a little, giving it a small shake. A smile tugged at my lips.

“He’s back,” I whispered.

They all let out a long, relieved sigh.

“Damn, boy, it took you almost a decade to give us that information,” Lucian said as he sat on the floor too. “We were worried when your bones started cracking—”

“And when the smell of blood filled the place,” Raven added.

I gave her a small reassuring smile. “I’m all healed now. He was mad at me, though… that’

I took a step back, my heart nearly beating out of my chest as I assessed the first damage I might have created with Damon’s energy and Varyn’s help. The moment my eyes lifted to the bars I’d slammed into, they widened as the large dent came into view. I let out a huge gasp as I dropped to the floor. One of the steel bars holding the gate was now completely bent. “It’s working,” I breathed softly, my eyes refusing to leave the spot as hope filled me. We could finally get out of here if we kept this up for a couple of days. “Now that’s what damage is supposed to look like,” Damon’s voice echoed, making me turn to him with a tired smile. I would forever be thankful to him, because without his help none of this would be possible—and without Rex too, because I wouldn’t have been able to wield his power without her. God, I would have so much to say to her if we finally met again. “Thank you,” I whispered, my eyes still on him. He frowned. “Save the thanks until we’re outside,” he sa

Damon’s POVHearing what Julian’s wolf, Varyn, said felt unreal—definitely impossible if I looked at it from a normal point of view. I guess the fact that none of us were normal made it easier to believe. The Elegida.I had heard rumors about how the child of the Banished prophecy would be powerful beyond doubt. Being mated to an Alpha likely intensified her abilities, but healing, true healing—was a different matter entirely. Especially since her healing had given Julian resistance to my energy.I knew healing involved pouring a part of your energy into another person, but as far as I’d seen, no one had ever released so much of themselves that it lingered for this long. Just from that alone, I could tell how much she cared about him—her energy was still within him, protecting him.It was… refreshing, knowing there was someone I could let my energy near without consequences. Somehow, it proved that my darkness wasn’t only a source of destruction anymore. For someone, for them—it meant

I had never been covered in such darkness before. Damon’s dark fog engulfed me the moment my hand touched it, and I couldn’t even see in front of me. I didn’t know much about vampires, but this, this energy—was suffocating. So suffocating… yet somehow, it wasn’t more than that.I braced myself for the impact, for the pain—the fire they all said I would feel wielding his energy but nothing came. Instead, the place felt painfully familiar, like I had come into contact with this energy before. I twirled my hands through the fog again when I realized it was harmless, and it wrapped around my skin softly. What was happening? Did Damon release harmless energy just so I wouldn’t hurt myself? But then why had he screamed for me not to touch it?Another thought dawned on me, making me whip my head back. Why wasn’t he calling his energy off? It had been a couple of minutes, and I was still wandering in that familiar darkness. Had I done something wrong? Was I trapped here now?I tried to make o

Damon’s voice echoed in my head over and over again. If I could connect with my wolf, then he would lend his energy. For some odd reason, I understood the meaning of his words as: connect with your wolf, get rid of the risk of going mad, and then we can talk about breaking the gates. I was starting to learn to read deeper into his words rather than take them at face value, and when I did that, a lot of the things he had said made more sense and felt a lot less harsh. I really wondered who he was and why his way of expressing himself was so complicated. The tiny piece of information that his mate was a wolf did little to ease my curiosity. He was so mysterious, with that dark energy surrounding him, but I knew—now I know—that he cares. And if he was willing to offer help, then I would accept it. “I’ll give it a try then,” I finally said, breaking the silence that felt like it lasted forever. “I’ll talk to Varyn—my wolf—as long as you agree to keep your word.” My eyes found Damon’s,

The next moment my eyes snapped open, they landed on Lucian who, of course, was already watching me with that annoyingly flattering smile. “I was trying to help break them down too,” he said casually, kicking at the gates of his cell. So that loud bang that dragged me back into consciousness… that must’ve been him. The day hadn’t even started properly. “I thought you said I should give it a rest,” I said, raising a brow as I pushed myself upright. “You weren’t the one who kicked the door, Julian,” he teased. “I said you should rest because you looked like you were going to pass out. I never said someone else couldn’t try.” He finished with a grin that made it impossible not to shake my head. “So… how’s it going? Any progress?” I asked. He let out a dramatic sigh. “I can’t even tap into my core strength, not to mention wielding any magic. My attempt was about as threatening as a young pup trying to knock over a cardboard box.” I snorted. “This is why I said to leave it to me. I’
