(Ivy’s POV)

I straightened up quickly, holding Casper closer against me as I faced Ryker.

“What are you doing here? And… how long were you standing there?” I asked, forcing my voice to stay steady.

Ryker’s gaze flicked between me and the boy.

“I was doing some rounds with the other warriors. I saw the door open and heard someone talking, thought I should check it out. It turns out it was just you two.”

I searched his face for any sign of a lie, but he looked calm enough. Nodding, I adjusted Casper in my arms as he buried his face into my neck.

“We should go,” I said, walking past him, but before I could step far, Ryker’s voice cut through, halting me.


“What were you two talking about earlier? It sounded rather…important.”

My heart skipped. Turning to him with an awkward smile. “Nothing important,” I lied.

“I was just trying to get Casper comfortable, that’s all.”
