Chapter 7

Author: Stars
A sharp slap cracked through the air.

Lily's face burned with a visible handprint, and she stared wide-eyed at Mateo in disbelief.

Mateo shed his usual tenderness and glared coldly at Lily. "How dare you say Phoebe's dead! I won't believe it unless I see her body! Let me be clear, Phoebe is the only one worthy of being my wife, Lily!"

Lily burst into tears, yelling, "How could you lay a hand on me, Mateo! Have you forgotten why I lost Maverick? You would have been the one who died if he hadn't stepped in that day! Phoebe should've been the widow, not me! How dare you strike your late brother's wife!"

Lily resorted to her old tactic, weaponizing Maverick's death once more to play the victim. Mateo would be overwhelmed with guilt whenever she mentioned Maverick in the past, but this time, his expression remained completely unmoved.

He merely let out a long, weary sigh and said, "I suppose it's time you knew the truth, Lily. Maverick's accident was caused by his own drunk driving. He

Lily soon received a summons from the court once her embezzlement was exposed. She slumped to the floor, appearing utterly defeated. She had never truly believed that Mateo would be heartless enough to go through with it—to actually drag her through the legal system. On the eve of the trial, she arrived at Mateo's doorstep with Taylor in her arms. She said, "I have to attend the trial tomorrow, Mateo. I realize now that there's no escaping the legal consequences of what I've done. "I also know that your hatred for me runs deep, but Taylor hasn't done anything wrong in any of this. Is it possible for you to look after him one last time, Mateo?"Mateo gave in, his resolve weakening at the mention of Taylor. He gazed at the boy sleeping peacefully on the bed, a hint of sorrow crossing his features. "You should repent sincerely while you're in prison and try to find a decent life for yourself when you're released, Lily. I feel so bad for Taylor—to be separated from his mother so so

I was reminded of three years ago as I watched him beg so pitifully, when he kneeled in the freezing snow and begged me not to marry anyone else. I realized then that while three years might be a drop in the bucket of time, it was more than enough time for everything to change, especially the way one person feels about another. "I've built a life for myself now, Mateo. I no longer have to wake up early or stay up late just to wait on your family. I don't have to swallow the bitterness of seeing you with other women or deal with the sharp-tongued cruelty of your mother. "I'm really happy with my life now. Why would I ever trade this freedom to return to the nightmare I left behind? "Did you honestly think I'd ever return to you after your betrayal, Mateo? I feel nothing but disgust whenever I see you with that lipstick stain on your shirt and smell that lingering perfume on you."I'll give you three days to sign the divorce agreement; otherwise, I'll take this to court myself."

Mateo remembered the early days of his marriage with Phoebe. They used to be so inseparable and affectionate. He traced the timeline of their marriage, seeing how they had gradually become strangers to one another, ending with the finality of Phoebe's total departure. He gripped the divorce agreement tightly, pondering exactly why Phoebe had made such a cold-hearted decision. He couldn't help but wonder if it was because he had brought Lily to their home and slept in her bedroom every night, if it was because he had given Lily their wedding ring, or perhaps if it was because he had stayed by Lily's side day and night ever since she got pregnant. He had been so lost in the sweet, suffocating comfort of Lily's embrace that he had blinded himself to Phoebe's pain. He had ignored the hurt in her gaze and her endless entreaties. He realized now that the trail of his neglect was long and easy to follow, leading straight to the wreckage today.Mateo kneeled before the maple tree, wee

Mateo trembled violently, feeling as if his blood was running cold at that moment. His phone slipped from his grasp, and the screen shattered as it hit the ground. "H-How could that be possible?" he muttered, turning deathly pale. "H-How could Phoebe…"He turned, ready to bolt, when Lily suddenly grabbed him. "Where are you going, Mateo?"Mateo looked panicked. "I'm going to look for Phoebe.""The news said the plane went down with zero survivors," Lily replied. "It's possible that there aren't even any remains of Phoebe left, Mateo."Olivia chimed in, "I agree with Lily, Mateo. She brought this on herself, really. If she hadn't gone on the plane to go to the beach by herself, none of this would've happened to her."Mateo finally snapped, yelling, "I was the one who bought that plane ticket! I was the one who told her to go to the beach! If it weren't for me, she wouldn't have been on that plane. It's all my fault!"Olivia had a look of schadenfreude on her face and said, "You

Once I moved out, Lily became even more unrestrained. She insisted that Mateo stay by her side at all times, forbidding him from seeing me.I didn't mind. Being alone meant fewer things to worry about. It was just that the villa was newly renovated, so the sharp, biting scent of paint gave me a constant migraine.Mateo unexpectedly appeared as my departure date drew near. He looked at me with a remorseful expression. "I know you've suffered lately, so as an apology, I've booked us a trip to the beach. I want us to have some quality time together, just the two of us, Phoebe."He had just said that when his phone suddenly rang. He glanced at the screen, and the mask of guilt immediately shattered, replaced by a smile of genuine, tender affection. He answered the phone and said, "Got it, Lily. I'll head back this instant."He had just stepped out of the door when he suddenly recalled our supposed trip. He looked slightly sheepish as he said, "You'll have to go to the beach alone this
