“Here you go, Sweetie.” Jessie Walker handed her fiancé Mark his early morning cup of smoothies. Mark sipped through the straw, then glanced at his watch and handed the cup back. “Okay, so I made reservations tonight at Marcellus for 8:00. I thought maybe we should… you know, set a date?” “Alright, I will see you later.” He headed for the door. “Hey, hey, hey. Love you.” Jessie rested her hand on his shoulder, pouting her lips for a kiss. “Love you too.” But Mark placed a quick kiss on her forehead instead and walked out. Jessie returned to the kitchen table with a sigh. Her eyes caught the five-carat diamond ring on her finger, and a smile spread across her face. In just a few short months, she would marry the man of her dreams. “Jessica!” Taylor’s booming voice filled the living room. Jessie glanced up to see her friend standing in the kitchen doorway. “The door wasn’t locked.” “I was sure I locked it when Mark left,” Jessie said as she stood to hug her. They settled onto the stools at the counter. “This is a beautiful day. I brought something for you.” Taylor reached into her oversized bucket-shaped bag and pulled out a bottle of champagne. “Here you go.” Jessie examined the bottle, eyebrows raised. Taylor noticed her confusion. “It’s my new sample — apple-flavored.” Jessie gasped. “This is beautiful, Taylor. I didn’t know you would brand a sample like this.” She grabbed two glasses, popped the cork, and poured. “It was only branded for you. I wanted you to try it and tell me what you think. Is the packaging nice? Will they like it?” Jessie smiled softly. “They will love it.” She passed one glass to her friend. “To happily married life.” “To success,” Taylor replied. Their glasses clinked. Jessie took a sip and her eyes widened. The apple flavor burst on her tongue — crisp, refreshing, and far better than any of Taylor’s previous drinks. “So tell me,” Taylor said, setting her glass down, “did you decide to throw your dreams away for marriage?” Jessie sucked her teeth. “We decided to leave my dream and work toward everything together. We created a list of do’s and don’ts. Mark and I agreed I would only do shows on Friday nights once we are married. Tonight we are setting the wedding date. I’m so excited, babe. I’ve waited for this.” “I know, and I’m happy for you, but do you think that list is good for you? Becoming a full-time wife and only performing on Fridays? What if a big gig comes along that could change everything? I would advise crossing out the old list and making a new one that benefits you too. You can’t just hand your dreams over to a man. He will have full power over you.” Jessie lifted the glass to her lips, then lowered it. “If it wasn’t for Mark, I don’t think I would be surviving today. My family wouldn’t be where they are. He sponsored my mama, Bev’s tuition fees. The least I can do is obey him and do what he wants. You know I didn’t finish school because my mom couldn’t afford it. Mark believed in me, and he loves me.” She flashed the diamond ring toward Taylor. “Look at that. I’m the luckiest girl alive. I can’t believe someone would love a girl like me.” “I understand, but if he really loves and believes in you, he should help you reach for the sky — not restrict you or pressure you to be the perfect wife and mother. Look, Jessie,” Taylor placed a hand on her shoulder, “I don’t want you to wake up one day regretting everything you worked so hard for. You’ve always tried to be that perfect girl for Mark. You never even cry in front of him. You have to put yourself first and not be afraid to lose a man. Talk to him tonight. If he supports your dreams, he is the one for you. But if he wants you to be a stay-at-home wife, please run. He will ruin you.” Taylor sighed. “You know I love you and want the best for you.” Jessie nodded, fear twisting in her stomach. For years she had shaped herself to be exactly what Mark wanted — the classy dresses, the constant pleasing, the perfect image for his friends and family. She was becoming someone she didn’t recognize. Maybe Taylor was right. She would have to talk to Mark tonight. She would tell him how uncomfortable she felt about becoming a full-time housewife while her music dreams gathered dust. She couldn’t spend years breathing the same air with him if it meant losing herself completely. “Hey.” Taylor tapped her arm gently. “What are you thinking about?” Jessie blinked, pulled from her thoughts. “Nothing. I was just thinking about what you said. You are right. I have worked too hard for this dream. If he loves me, he will change the list and support me. I will talk to him tonight about everything — how uncomfortable I am with this whole housewife arrangement.” Taylor nodded and finished her drink. “I’m proud of the woman you are becoming. Mark will see it too. you are a gem, far prettier than that carat diamond on your finger.” Jessie giggled, warmth blooming in her chest. After Taylor left, she locked the door and stood alone in the quiet kitchen. The champagne bottle and her sparkling ring sat side by side on the table. Tonight at Marcellus, she would set the wedding date… and finally speak up about her dreams. She hoped the man she loved would understand.Sierra lowered her shoulders, then lifted them again. "Jessie, it's obvious." She turned to walk away. "I think you did something wrong."Jessie breathed deeply. If he did discover she was in his room, why wouldn't he confront her?Din Cooper always found new ways to torture her. But this time was different. This time, he was silent. That meant he was planning something. Her phone rang the moment she stepped into her room. An unknown number. She hesitated, then answered. An old, sluggish voice spoke. She recognized it immediately.Din's grandfather. He wanted to see her. Asked if she could come to his mansion right away, and spend some time with him.Jessie set the phone down and exhaled. She had agreed to visit after finishing her chores. Bev wouldn't mind staying home alone—she loved having the house to herself.Jessie went to her closet and grabbed the first long trousers she saw. The old man didn't seem to like women in revealing clothes. Her hand reached for a long off-white pull
The voice suddenly came back.Leave.Jessie's blood turned cold. She shouldn't be here. What was she thinking? What if someone found her? What if Din saw her there? What would she say? I was just looking at your childhood photos, Mr. Cooper. Hope you don't mind.He would destroy her.She shoved the album back into the cabinet and scrambled for the door. Her hands trembled. Her heart slammed against her ribs. She moved so fast that she didn’t know that behind her, the framed photograph had slipped, and broken. At 6:11 a.m, Jessie lay frozen under her blanket. Her eyes were wide open. Her body was still, but inside, she was screaming. The door to the house opened. It was soft. But she heard it.He's back. She pulled the blanket over her head and prayed. Please don't notice. Please don't come in here. Please don't know it was me.She had left his room exactly as she found it. She hadn't slept since five that morning. Since the water. Since the room. Since the voices in her head.
Jessie pressed her fingers to her lips.‘For my mum and sister alone,’ she whispered to herself. Just them. Months. That was all she had to survive. A handful of months, and then she would be free of this pain. Free of this house. Free of him.But her hands wouldn't leave her mouth. She could still feel him there. Din Cooper's kiss. The weight of him. The heat. It was all she could think about. All she could feel. And deep down, she knew—she wouldn't forget it for the rest of her time in this mansion.***A sudden rain lashed.Beth linked her hand through Din's and pulled him inside. "I think you should stay the night."He had stood at the doorway earlier, motioning for her to enter. But she had hesitated—until the sky opened up."Unbelievable," Din muttered, shaking rain from his sleeves. "The forecast said nothing about rain.""I'll make you some hot tea. Make yourself comfortable." Beth kicked off her heels, slipped into house slippers, and disappeared into the kitchen.Din had bee
Jessie's breath caught. "You know who I am?" Jessie's voice came out smaller than she intended. The woman nodded slowly, tilting her head like a bird studying something curious. "I've come to see Din Cooper. Is he back from work?"Jessie's fingers tightened on the doorframe. She didn't want to let this woman in. Every instinct screamed otherwise. But her body moved on its own—she stepped aside and pulled the door open wider.Just enough for Din to see. From his stool, his head lifted. His eyes met the woman's. And then—He was on his feet. Fast.Jessie didn't wait to watch the rest. She turned and walked away. Even as her chest tightened and her throat burned.Behind her, she heard his voice."Beth?"He was not shocked. Not angry. Something else. Something softer.Jessie reached her room. Closed the door. Leaned against it.Her heart was racing. For no reason. No reason at all.She sat on the edge of the bed and pressed a hand to her chest. It wouldn't calm down. Why do you feel like
Sierra had called the head maids after breakfast and asked them to return home before she went to see Abby. Bev had gone out to meet her friends at a nearby coffee shop along the estate, while Jessie returned to her telenovela.Sierra had denied Jessie's request to accompany her to the clothing store to get a dress for Abby.Jessie checked the clock while pausing the movie she was watching. She exclaimed, realizing she had lost track of time during the marathon of episodes. She had no idea if Sierra had finished shopping for Abby's outfit or if Bev was still having fun at her friend's house.Jessie went to get some clothes from her closet. She might erupt if she remained in this house much longer. Her mind and body might disintegrate. She had been staring at the screen for hours, and Taylor had always warned her about the dangers of staring at a screen for too long without going for a walk or doing any exercise—both of which she had missed that morning due to Din Cooper's stunts. And
The next morning, Jessie woke up quite early. She was already back to her old self and able to function normally. Her illness had passed. After cleaning herself up, she went to the kitchen and washed all the dishes. She made sure breakfast was ready before seven o'clock.Din woke up at that hour and prepared for work. He was used to seeing Beth in his bed every Monday morning when he woke up, but not this time. He had stopped calling her since she refused to pick up his calls, and he had decided to give her space. He got out of the bathroom, dried off, and put on his shirt and pants. He chose blue for his shirt, pants, and suit—light blue for the top, navy blue for the pants and suit. Before leaving the room, he fixed his tie and checked himself in the mirror once more.He was the type of man who didn't eat breakfast before work, and the maids were well aware of this, so they didn't bother preparing anything for him. However, the aroma coming from the kitchen made him pause. As he nea
