Dennis’s pov

The door to the room opened. I didn’t turn. I couldn’t take my eyes off the shit that was happening on the screen.

“Hey, sorry man, it’s just a job…” Alex said and started muttering something as he walked past me.

I heard his sharp intake of breath. Then, a second later, the TV screen went black.

I looked at my hands to see he has collected the remote and turned off the tv.

I slowly turned to him in shock to see Alex standing there with the remote in his hand.

“Dennis, I…” he started, his voice rough.

“What is going on Alex?” Was all I could mutter out.

He started forward, hand extended. “It’s… it’s nothing. Just a tall tale. I’ve got it under control… I can make it right. I can fix it.”

“Fix it?” The words were louder, filled with a rage I couldn’t leash. “They’re saying I seduced you! They’re saying I forged documents! They called me a parasite on national television! And then …  they showed my mother, Alex! They showed her!”

My voice shred at the last word. Tremors ra

Leticia’s povI slammed the door behind me as I went to the car where Lyon was standing outside it. He was scheming something there. “We should go,” I said in a tired voice. “He needs space. We’re just making it worse.”Lyon didn’t turn around. He just let out a short, dismissive sigh that was more a puff of steam in the cool air than anything else. “He needs a reality check, is what he needs.”He got into the driver’s side as I entered beside him and he turned the car on. As he drove us back home I didn’t say anything to him which had him looking at me. “The fucking nerve,” he started, his hands tensing around the steering wheel. “Of kicking me out of my his house. My house, really, trust still owns the deed to it. For that… that fucking nobody.”I said nothing. I just watched the manicured lawns and towering gates of the neighborhood blur past.“And the boy. Did you see? Skulking off to his stupid words. No backbone. Can’t even face the music. If he had any integrity, he’d leave.

Lyon’s povIt turned on to one of those trashy entertainment news. And there he was. My son. Alexander. His face next to that boy’s, Dennis. Peterson? McAllister? I never cared to remember his surname. The title at the bottom of the screen made my breath catch.‘GOLD DIGGER? SCANDAL ROCKS LYON TAYLOR HEIR’S SUDDEN MARRIAGE.’At that moment, I didn't know whether to smile or cry but all I could do was smile at what I was looking at. Finally I was getting what I wanted.“…reports coming from Dennis Peterson rumors suggest that he did indeed go after the wealthy heir while his mother was so incapacitated with her illness,” an excited female voice said. “Some even claim that there are serious doubts as to the legality of his marriage…”Alistair let out a low whistle. “Well. There’s your stronger stance.”I didn’t answer him. Everything started spinning, every outcome imaginable racing through my mind like stock tickers. I’d just been given the biggest gift, beautifully wrapped and ticking

Alex’s pov“By being you,” he said, as if it were obvious. “The you that you are with me. The one who isn’t scared of them. Taking your job seriously. Not for them, for yourself. Building something they can’t deny. That’s yours.”It had never been phrased that way to me before. Not as a creation, but as a construction. I nodded. “Okay, I can try.”He smiled at me again with an understanding smile and said: “I believe you can.”And for a second, sitting in that hospital room with him, it felt possible. I felt a buzz as I got out my phone. Probably a news alert or something from work.I picked it up absently, my eyes still on Dennis, still feeling that weird, hopeful warmth.I then opened it and suddenly felt the blood drain from my face:The phone became cold and very heavy in my hand. The world, the room, Dennis’s face, it all just… felt far away. I looked at the headline and read it within myself.LYON TAYLOR HEIR’S HUSBAND IN SICK MOTHER GOLD-DIGGING SCANDAL?First off whoever wr

Sophias povI smiled back at my team. “Now… anyone with questions about the story? Any concerns about how it’s on-brand?”A unified head shake followed."Good." I stood up implying the meeting was over. "I want to hear this news around every corner. The only thing people can chat about, got it? I swear, if I am disappointed… you all won’t like me. I want every news outlet to see Dennis as a gold digger and make sure Alex is seen as the saint. My saint, got it?”A chorus of “Yes, Sophia,” and “Of course, Sophia,” followed as they left.Dennis was going to die for all our sins. I would make sure he paid for them all. Lydia’s jaw dropped as she looked around, eyes wide at the floor-to-ceiling windows that gave us an unparalleled view of… well… more buildings. Minimalist art adorned the walls as she smiled and adored the place.“This place is amazing;” she said.“It’s mine,” I confirmed. There was no excitement left in me, just a cool crispness that matched the plan perfectly. “And if y

Dennis’s povThe stairwell door swung shut behind us with a muffled thud, cutting off the nurse’s optimistic report while her words were still echoing in my ears. ‘Her vitals are stronger than they’ve ever been… responding better to this new medication… like she’s a different patient altogether.’ My throat tightened. She was going to be okay. Really, genuinely all right this time. Without Alex my mother would have been long dead. I was grateful for his help.We nudged open the door into her room at last. It smelled just like always: clean sheets mingled with antiseptic wipedown, with something else laid over both; some strange scent clung on top of those everyday rhythms. Perfume, faint but expensive; something floral that must have been outrageously priced, it smelled completely out of place within these bland white walls.“Hey, Mum,” I said quietly, still looking around. She was asleep. The scent in the room disturbed me as I turned to the nurse. “Hey was any other person here earl
