Dennis’s pov

“Please we don’t have time;” Alex said as I sighed and looked at the glass with the bubbles in the drink.

“What do you think?” His voice had dropped. It wasn’t so urgent now. “Have you thought about it?”

I kept silent for a while before looking around

“I have my mom to think about,” I finally said. My voice was tight.

Alex’s jaw opened, then shut again. He glanced down at his cup and back up. “I know.”

“She’s really sick,” i said. “She won’t get any better if all I’m doing is ignoring her to come live with you. I’m all she has.”

“I can make her treatment even faster. I have the money. Just tell me what you need.”

“It’s not that simple.”

“I told you I will make sure she is okay,” he repeated, a little too quickly. “I promised you that. Financially. Medically. Anything you want. I’ll fly her out if you want. Fly in the best doctors if you want.”

I could hear the desperation in his voice. He really wanted this to work.

“Seriously?” I asked, my voice lower.

He nodded. “Yeah.

Alex’s povI could see she was not happy with the answer I gave, but who cares. If my life was to be destroyed it was mine and not hers. Her lips pressed together. “You should know that your choice is affecting more than you.”“You think I don’t know that?” I scoffed. “Dennis knows the whole intricacies of the company. If he wanted to destroy our company he could do it without blinking. He’s that smart. I want someone like that by my side.”She studied me for a long, heavy pause. "Need, or want?"I didn’t blink. “Both.”For the first time since I’d started, she seemed… confused. Probably because I wasn’t caving in to her words.I kept my stare steady and she said it flat out. “I’m not telling you to get rid of him because it makes the board happier or whatever the fuck they think. I’m only doing it so that you will be with someone you actually like. Please.”I stayed silent for a while as I slowly counted the minutes I’ve spent in this place.“Alex,” she said, softer now. “I’m not try

Alex’s povThe waiter guided me through the main floor as soft lighting and polished wood lined the place. She was by the window, sunlight sending twinkles off the pearls at her throat. One hand around her teacup. The other lying there on the table like she was waiting for someone to kiss it. She looked perfect. She looked up and saw me coming as she got up to set her cup and came to hug me.“Alex,” she said with that soft smile of hers. Like last night I hadn’t heard her telling me not to be rude where my own father was concerned.I hugged her but I didn’t put any love in it.We then sat down as she got her cup to sip from."Alex," she said quietly. "I want to ask you this… Are you safe in your marriage?"That came as a shock as I froze where I sat.Safe? What kind of thing was this?I just looked at her for a moment, as if I’d misunderstood. Safe? That word hit against the inside of my head like a silver dollar in an empty jug, loud and hollow. My mother didn’t talk like that. She t

Alex’s povThe study still smelled of old cigars and leather as I walked in here. Dennis followed me in, the butler trailing behind like some silent shadow. My phone was already buzzing in my pocket, screen flashing Mum.I swiped to answer without thinking."Alex," her voice came through, soft but sharp beneath still, "will you be around tomorrow?"I flicked my eyes over to Dennis and then the butler. "Wait outside for a minute," I said to them. Dennis gave me that look, the one where he wants to say something back—but he doesn't. So he just nodded and both him and the butler walked out, door clicking shut behind them.“Mum,” I said, pressing on my desk with my hand, “why are you calling me at this time? I just got back.”“Got back from where?” she asked right away.“The club,” I said, glancing towards the door as if Dennis might be lurking. “With Dennis.”There was a silence. A sigh. The kind of sigh that always meant she’d been practising it in her head for the entire evening.“I ha

Dennis’s povThe second I heard my name “Dennis?” I froze. I turned, slowly, because there was no way in hell that could possibly be right. But it was. It was him. Fred. From high school. Right there in front of me and Alex with a gleaming smile as though nothing had ever changed.“Oh my God.” Fred’s eyes were wide. “It’s been, like, forever!”I smiled so awkwardly I thought my face might split in two. “Fred. Hey. It has… Yeah. Forever.”He looked exactly the same, just older. I could see the scruff on his jaw that showed he was more matured. And that awkward hairstyle he had back then was gone as he now has a cropped hair now.I gulped hard. Of all the people to run into tonight… it had to be him.Fred glanced at Alex, then back at me, eyebrows lifting. “And who’s this?”Oh. Shit. The knot in my stomach congealed into an icy stone and dropped straight through me to the floor. I started thinking of how to introduce Alex and when I looked at Alex he had a sly grin on his face.“Uh…

Lyon’s povI pulled into the driveway that evening as I stayed in the car for a while.Without a care in the world, I got out of the car and slammed the car shut.My driver who was still inside flinched but I didn’t care.He got out and I turned to him. “Clean up the car and make sure it’s clean to be used. Inside and out. No excuses."He nodded quickly. "Yes, sir. Right away."I turned and went into my house to relax as my head was banging from what I had seen and heard today.I pushed open my door prepared for silence but Leticia’s shrill voice met my ears instead.“Who on earth let the horses near the donkeys? Can I just say, I did not raise idiots?!”I rolled my eyes and yanked off my dirty boots without bothering to aim as I tossed it about. The maid servants all but dove out of our way, and to be fair, I didn’t blame them. She turned to see me, her hands still resting on her curvy hips, gold bangles sliding up and down her arm as she cocked her head. “Why do you look like somebo

Dennis’s povHe laughed like I’d told a joke. “No offense, babe. It’s just—if you’re in the community, represent. Flaunt it. Be proud. Don’t just sit there looking like two straight dudes who got lost on the way to a sports bar.”Something inside me snapped then. Maybe it was the way he said babe like I should be grateful for his attention. Maybe it was how that glitter dust kept falling onto my pants over and over again. “No offense, but not all of us want to be a walking rainbow,” I said like I didn’t care how he felt.Dion raised his eyebrows. “Wow… Sure you’re even gay?”I stood.Alex blinked and also stood, a little unsure as to what I was doing. “Dennis—”“We don’t owe you anything,” I said sharply. “Not our personalities, not our wardrobes, and definitely not our validation.”Max scoffed. “It’s people like you that make the rest of us look bad. Closet-case energy.”Alex laughed, a humorless sound as he rubbed his temple, like he was trying to keep in the same tempest I was fai
