Gripping the steering wheel Carson's knuckles turned white. With an angry metallic clang that reverberated throughout the silent evening the car door slammed shut behind him.

His entire body was trembling as he sat there not only from anger but also from intense nauseating guilt.

Because of his mother Annabel was in pain when he left her alone. He had let her down. He felt a chilly knot of shame as the thought twisted inside him.

The storm that was raging inside him was not much calmed by the deep breaths he took. At last he inserted the ignition key. As the engine roared to life he squealed his tires on the pavement as he pulled out of the driveway.

He returned to the mansion in a car that was too fast. Every time he turned the wheel the tension in his shoulders increased. He didn't even bother to shut the mansions imposing front doors before bursting through.

The front door closed with a sound. The sound was quiet but definitive. Once again the apartment was enveloped in silence. Something felt different this time. The weight of the recently concluded conversation and everything left unsaid hung heavy in the air. Fred was a calm sturdy man who stood in the living room. His gaze remained focused on the corridor where Annabel had vanished. There was still a faint sound of her footsteps. After that nothing. He remained motionless for a minute. He simply listened. Outside he could hear the distant sounds of traffic and the quiet hum of the kitchen refrigerator. However there was nothing but a thick profound silence from the rear corridor. He was wise enough to avoid rushing in. Pushing was something he knew better. He went back into the kitchen and started to fill a container with the remaining pasta. He moved slowly and methodically. He cleaned the forks after the final plate. His thoughts were diverted. The unadulterated unfiltered pai

The straightforward meal came to an end. After getting to her feet, Annabel started gathering the empty bowls. Fred followed suit. Their motions had a calm easy rhythm. In response Fred said “I can do the dishes.”“It's the least I can do.” answered Annabel. “You prepared food. It’s also my mess.”Fred smiled without arguing. He simply gave her a bowl to dry in. Annabel accepted it stroking his fingers. He did not retreat. The sound of running water filled the tiny kitchen as they stood next to each other at the sink. They sat in cozy silence while Annabel washed and Fred dried. The apartment was suddenly filled with a sharp loud knock. It had a demanding almost urgent tone. Annabel's eyebrows shot up in surprise as she turned to face Fred. “Are you expecting someone?” She questioned. His forehead wrinkled into a frown as he shook his head. “No. Not a soul.”He cast a wary glance in the direction of the living room. Using a towel Annabel dried her hands completely before folding

The silence had grown oppressive. Annabel sat on the couch barely comfortable on the plush cushions. She had a dizzying loop of thoughts. Her legs were stiff from sitting still for so long but she forced herself to stand up at last. She entered the kitchen quietly. The air was heavy with the aroma of herbs and garlic. Fred hummed softly as he stood facing away from her. Standing before the stove he was agitating a pan. He was dressed in a basic gray t-shirt. It was the first time she had seen him like that. At home. It was a startling and peculiar sight. In sharp contrast to the jumble of her thoughts he appeared calm. With a spatula in his hand Fred turned at her silent entrance. His eyes crinkled at the corners as a warm smile appeared on his face. “Hey.” he said. He spoke in a soft low tone. “Look at what the cat brought.” She smiled a little hesitantly. “My hunger was growing.”He turned back to the pan and said “Good. I was afraid I'd have to eat everything by myself. Its

The figure was tall and broad. His face was a blur in my drunken vision. “Annabel?” he said. His voice was not Carson's. It was deeper, more of a rumble. The voice was familiar.“Fred?” I whispered, my voice thick.“Yeah, it’s me. What are you doing here? I was worried about you.” His hand was warm on my shoulder, a solid, grounding weight in my spinning world.“I… I just needed to get away,” I said, my head dropping forward. The world spun again, the neon lights of the bar swirling into a nauseating kaleidoscope of color.“From what? From who?” he asked, his voice now laced with a protective anger that was both fierce and comforting.I looked up at him. I couldn't focus on his face, but I could see the concern in his eyes, a genuine worry that sliced through the alcohol-fueled haze.“Everything. All of it. Victoria, Carson…” The dam I had been holding back for hours finally broke. I started to cry again. The tears came easily now, a hot, wet torrent on my face, mingling with the s

I got up from the floor. My body felt heavy, and my limbs ached. I stumbled into the bathroom. The light of the vanity mirror was harsh. I splashed cold water on my face. The sting was a welcome shock. Then I looked up.My eyes widened. There, on my cheek, was a faint red mark, a small bruise blooming just below my cheekbone. It was a stark visual reminder of Victoria’s hatred. I clenched my hands on the sink. The porcelain felt cold against my skin. I had to get out. I had to leave this place. The thought consumed me. It wasn't a flicker of an idea; it was a fire, burning away the last remnants of my hesitation. The silence of the mansion, once a comfort, now felt oppressive, like a tomb. Every hallway seemed to echo with Victoria's contempt, every expensive piece of furniture a testament to a life I no longer wanted. I didn’t belong here. I never had. This wasn’t a home; it was a gilded cage, and the bruise on my face was a key turning in the lock.I went to my closet, my movem
