The master suite of Blackwood Manor was quiet, save for the crackle of a low fire burning in the stone hearth.

Evelyn sat on the edge of the plush king-sized bed, wearing a soft silk robe. She kept her posture relaxed, her eyes staring blankly at the far wall as if taking in the darkness. But every single one of her senses was dialled in to the subtle acoustics of the third floor.

Three men on security detail in the west wing, Evelyn mapped silently in her head. Their boots have rubber soles, but the second guard limps slightly on his right foot. The heavy oak door to Lucian's private office just clicked shut.

She leaned back against the headboard, closing her eyes to focus entirely on the sound waves traveling through the estate’s brass ventilation shafts.

From two floors down, the deep, muffled rumble of Lucian’s voice cut through the quiet.

"Did Julian Vance make it to his flight?" Lucian asked.

A sharper, higher-pitched voice—his chief security officer, Marcus—responded immediately. "No, Boss. We intercepted him in the private terminal lounge, exactly as you ordered. He had two passports and three encrypted thumb drives hidden in his coat lining."

"What is on the drives?" Lucian’s voice was as cold as iron.

"Financial logs from the Vance estate. It looks like Julian was double-crossing his own mother. He was draining the company’s remaining asset reserves into a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands—and framing your new wife, Evelyn, as the primary account holder."

Inside the master bedroom, Evelyn’s hands tightened around the soft duvet.

Julian tried to frame me?! Her blood ran cold with quiet rage. He didn't just sell me off to clear his debt—he set me up as the fall girl for his embezzlement so I’d end up in prison if the Blackwood auditors investigated!

Downstairs, the sound of glass shattering echoed faintly through the ductwork. Lucian had smashed something against his desk.

"That greedy fool," Lucian snarled, his pulse heavy and dangerously slow—the signature mark of a man driven by absolute, calculated fury. "He thought he could use my marriage to dump his legal trash into my lap? Where is he now?"

"In the basement holding cell at the docks, Boss. What do you want us to do with him?"

A long, agonizing silence stretched through the vent. Evelyn held her breath, waiting for Lucian’s answer.

"Keep him alive," Lucian finally ordered, his tone terrifyingly level. "Do not let him contact Eleanor. Tomorrow morning, I am hosting a welcome breakfast for the Blackwood board members. My stepbrother-in-law's sudden 'disappearance' will send the exact message I need to the shareholders who think they can play games with me."

"And Mrs. Blackwood?" Marcus pressed softly. "If she finds out her stepbrother was seized on her wedding night—"

"She won't," Lucian cut him off instantly. "She is blind, fragile, and terrified of her own shadow. She knows nothing about the Vance family's dirty accounting. Keep her sheltered in the suite. I will handle Eleanor Vance myself when the time comes."

The line went quiet as the call ended.

Evelyn relaxed her grip on the bedsheets, a slow, cold smile spreading across her lips in the firelight.

Fragile? Terrified of my own shadow? Evelyn thought, her heart pulsing with fierce, electric energy. Oh, Lucian... you have no idea who you just brought into your house.

The faint sound of heavy, distinct footsteps began ascending the private spiral staircase leading toward the master suite.

Evelyn acted instantly. She slid under the heavy covers, pulled the duvet up to her shoulders, and let her breathing slow into a soft, steady rhythm, mimicking deep sleep.

Three seconds later, the heavy brass handle of the bedroom door turned without a sound.

The door glided open. Lucian stepped into the room, his tall silhouette blocking the faint light from the hallway. He didn't turn on the overhead chandelier, allowing only the dim red glow of the fireplace to illuminate the space.

He walked over to the side of the bed, his footsteps completely silent on the thick Persian rug.

Evelyn kept her eyes closed, her breathing slow and measured. But her hyper-acute hearing picked up every micro-detail: the subtle scent of expensive whiskey and rain clinging to his suit, the slight rustle of his tie as he loosened it, and the heavy, intense gaze he fixed upon her face.

Lucian stood beside her for a full minute in absolute silence.

Slowly, he reached down. His large, warm hand hovered inches above her cheek before gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her forehead. His touch was shockingly gentle, starkly contrasting the brutal tyrant who had ordered Julian’s capture just minutes prior.

"You're safe here, Evelyn," Lucian whispered softly into the quiet room, his voice carrying a trace of tired, heavy weight. "No one in this family will ever hurt you again."

He pulled his hand back, turned around, and walked toward the adjoining private dressing room, closing the door behind him.

Evelyn opened her eyes in the dark, staring up at the carved wooden ceiling. Her heart was beating a wild, erratic rhythm against her ribs.

He thinks he's protecting a helpless victim, she thought, her mind racing as she mapped out her next move. He destroyed Julian to protect his corporate name, but he inadvertently did my dirty work for me. Now, all that’s left of my enemies is Eleanor.

She turned her head toward the fire, her eyes sharp and gleaming.

Let the game begin, husband.

The capital’s financial district was ablaze with neon lights and frantic energy as the opening bell signaled the start of the trading day at 9:30 AM. Rain slicked the pavement outside the high-rise towers, but inside the trading floors, the heat was suffocating.Inside the glass-walled executive suite on the top floor of Blackwood Tower, Lucian and Evelyn sat side-by-side at a long mahogany conference table. Marcus stood nearby with a specialized team of six top financial analysts monitoring thirty high-speed trading monitors that hummed with real-time global market data.On the primary wall screen, the stock price of Blackwood Group was displayed in giant silver numbers: $420.50 PER SHARE."Boss," Marcus spoke rapidly, his fingers flying across his encrypted laptop keyboard. "The Banking Guild's proxy accounts in Zurich just dumped two million synthetic short shares into the public order book! Down at the front gates, Marcus personally oversaw a dedicated, twenty-four-hour tactical detail assigned exclusively to protecting Evelyn and her father, Arthur Vance.Inside Lucian’s third-floor study, the room was quiet save for the crackle of the marble fireplace. The soft glow of the desk lamp illuminated thick legal files detailing the complex corporate restructuring of Vance Pharmaceuticals.Evelyn walked into the room silently, her black cane tapping lightly and rhythmically against the polished oak floor. That evening, a gentle spring rain fell over Blackwood Manor. The grand estate was peaceful. High above the bustling city, inside the master suite, the floor-to-ceiling glass doors were pushed open slightly, allowing the cool, lavender-scented evening air to fill the warm room.A soft fire crackled in the marble fireplace, casting a golden, flickering light across the plush velvet sofas and the wide mahogany bed.Evelyn sat on the wide window seat, wrapped in a comfortable silk robe, holding a warm mug of chamomile tea. She listened to the soothing cadence of the rain tapping against the glass and the distant rustle of the pine trees in the garden.Footsteps sounded across the hardwood floor—heavy, warm, and familiar.Lucian walked over to the window seat, having discarded his suit jacket and tie. He sat beside her, wrapping his long legs around her, pulling her back against his broad chest.Evelyn leaned back into his warm embrace, letting her head rest over his heart.Thud..

A massive banner hung above the main entrance: VANCE PHARMACEUTICALS - ANNUAL INNOVATION SUMMIT.Behind the velvet curtain on the secondary stage, Arthur Vance stood wearing a crisp navy suit. Though he used a polished mahogany cane for balance, his posture was tall, his eyes sharp, and his face full of vibrant life.Standing beside him was Evelyn, looking breathtaking in an emerald-green silk gown with high-structured collar details and diamond earrings.Lucian stood directly behind her, his hand resting securely against the small of her back, radiating an imposing, regal aura that kept every executive in the building at a respectful distance.
