I refreshed the page to confirm. It had to be network issues. There was no way my savings would be gone.
However, it returned the same way. $0 and nothing more.
At this point, I felt asphyxiated again. I grabbed a paper bag and breathed with it.
I found my way outside and I could feel the breeze against my face.
There was only one person who could have withdrawn the savings apart from me. That was Marie.
I could remember she looked nervous when I talked about using the savings to get a new place earlier.
I ran back inside and grabbed my phone.
I dialed Marie's contact immediately.
She picked up at the second ring.
“Did you transfer the money in my savings to your bank account already? You should have told me,” I tried masking my fears.
“I'm sorry, Natasha…” I heard those dreaded words.
I had to sit down now else I could faint.
“What are you sorry for?” I asked calmly.
“I… I am sorry…” Marie went again.
“Tell me the reason!” I shouted at her.
I lost my temper for a second and then I regained composure.
“I need to know, please.”
“Bajie saw an investment scheme a few months ago and needed some money.
I used your savings and planned to return it when it yields the desired profit. I didn't tell you because you'll just say it's a scam and refuse to lend Bajie the money,” Marie said slowly.
She was choosing her words delicately.
“When will I get my money back?” I asked calmly.
“The thing is…” Marie muttered.
“It was a scam!”
I dropped my phone. I managed to stand up and get to the verandah.
There, I laid down on the bare floor and wept. I was penniless now.
Marie had foolishly ended whatever hope I had before. Then I stopped crying and switched to laughing hysterically.
I must be going crazy, I thought. I could hear my phone ringing inside. I knew it was Marie.
I decided to go back inside and pick up the phone.
This time, I talked first.
“You've ruined me, Marie!” I told her without mincing words.
“I trusted you but this is how you stab me in the back. I knew you were struggling in your career and that's why I never pressured you to do anything.
I pay the household bills, the rent, and almost everything else. You were my best friend yet you betrayed me for that useless boyfriend of yours!”
“I'm sorry,” Marie said. That didn't move me at all.
“It's all my fault. Bajie did nothing wrong. I should have…”
“Shut it!” I shouted over the phone.
“Get over here right now and let's find a solution! I'm sure you don't want either of us to sleep in the streets.”
“I haven't told you everything…” Marie said nervously.
“I also borrowed money from a loan shark. It was about fifteen thousand dollars.”
I started to laugh.
“That's a joke, right? Comic relief!” I wanted to know.
“I was supposed to pay back last month but I couldn't. The loan shark has our house address. I think he is coming there today,” Marie said carefully.
“Really?” I clenched my fists.
“I'm staying at a hotel with Bajie for now. You should get out of the house as well. If the loan shark meets you there, I have no idea what he will do.
The man has a lot of gangsters on his beck and call,” Marie concluded.
“Bitch!” I shouted angrily. Marie cut the call immediately and I couldn't vent my anger properly.
Marie never said it but I was sure she borrowed that money with my name.
It dawned on me that I had been living with my enemy since.
There was no time to wait. I packed a small bag and left the house immediately.
I had no idea where I was going and I had only a little money with me as well.
Green light. Time to use the pedestrian crossing. I was walking slowly, lost in thought.
I didn't know what happened until I heard a car's tires screech so loudly beside me. It almost hit me.
“Do you want to get yourself killed?” I heard the driver shouting.
My eyes went blurry and as I tried to take a single step, I collapsed.
**My eyes opened slowly. Regaining consciousness was like waking up from a dream.
The first person I saw was Marie. Infact, she was the only one in the room.
“Bitch!” I retorted.
How could those be my first words, huh? It could only mean she had been etched so badly into my memory.
“Are you okay?” She asked.
“Get out! All you did to me were things only an evil person would do. You want me dead, don't you?” I asked out of anger.
The door opened and I watched as Bruce entered.
“I see you are awake!” Bruce said and came right beside me.
“What are you doing here? Are you here to mock me?” I asked.
I was surrounded by two vile humans.
“I heard the whole story from your friend,” Bruce told me.
“Your hospital bills have been paid and I have paid off that loan shark as well.
I'll renew your rent as well. I trust that will be enough for now.”
“Why would you do that for me?” I wanted to know.
“Think of it as hitting the jackpot!” Bruce replied. “Or better still, think of me has your prince in shining armor.”
“I don't believe in things like that!” I told him firmly.
“Then you can start now…” Bruce replied.
He turned to leave.
“Stop!” I shouted. “I'm a patient. Don't stress me, boss. Tell me what you want in exchange. You're a businessman.
How do you expect me to believe you've given me all that for free?” Bruce smiled and turned towards Marie.
“Bring the doctor, Marie. Let them know Natasha is awake,” Bruce said.
Marie went out of the room, leaving both of us alone.
“Tell me,” I said calmly.
“A contract marriage. Three months only.”
Bruce“I’m coming home,” I told her with my mind fully made up.I stood up first and cut the call next. As I tried to move, I bumped into the butler who barely held onto the wine from falling.“Are you leaving?” he asked with a startled expression.“Yes,” I replied. “I need to take care of something urgently. As for the wine, serve it to me the next time I visit.” I ran off immediately, going to find my car. It would be a long drive back to the mansion but I didn’t mind.**It was a few minutes after twelve when I got to the mansion. My grandma and Natasha were both seated in the living room. There was a movie showing on the TV screen and it seemed to have their attention until I arrived. Both of them turned to me at once and I glanced at Natasha first and then switched to Abigail.“You’re back,” Abigail muttered. She walked up to me and hugged me tightly.“I’m sorry, I know I have hurt you. I shouldn’t have done that but I did already. Please forgive me, okay?”I held her as well, smi
BruceI walked into the mansion angrily, looking for Abigail. She wasn’t in her room and as I checked other places she might be, I ran into Maria.“I believe this is working hours, why are you here?” Maria asked out of concern. She knew I rarely come home during work hours.“Where is my grandma?” I asked directly.“She isn’t in the mansion at the moment. She left so early today to see the sunrise at…” she was saying. I cut in sharply,“When will she be back?”“Anytime from now,” she replied.I walked back to the living room, determined to wait for Abigail. I was followed by Maria who seemed concerned about the way I was acting.“I hope you’re fine?” she asked for the umpteenth time. “Should I prepare some juice or would you like a beverage?” I rolled my eyes at her,“The best thing you can do for me right now is leave me alone.” Maria nodded and walked away, giving me the privacy I wanted.Ten minutes later, my grandmother entered the living room. She was with her driver who was helpi
BruceIt was in a rush that Kelvin entered my office. He was excited, his facial expression betrayed that.I gave him a quick glance and buried my head back, looking at the documents before me. It was about transferring some key staff members to different positions. It has been giving me a headache for days now.“It was just as you said,” Kelvin began to say, full of excitement.“The assistant chief secretary to Baldwin McAllen has been arrested by the police for arson. I believe there are both witnesses and evidence against him. He won’t be able to go scot-free.” I gasped,“The real target isn’t Jason, it is Baldwin. It would be nice if Jason could name his boss as the one who instigated him but I am almost sure it would never happen.”“Why not?” Kelvin questioned. “He is in danger right now. If he names Baldwin as the real instigator, his sentence might be shorter.”“People like Jason are smarter than you…” I pointed out.“He will end up gaining nothing if he betrays Baldwin. Why? I
Michael I could see horror on Baldwin’s face, the kind I rarely saw on such a composed man like him.I could tell it was largely due to my comment, not Jason’s arrest actually.“What did you just say?” he asked, gentlier than I expected. I sighed,“I do not mean I will implicate you with the police. I am only trying to get you on the same page with me.”“I still don’t understand,” Baldwin replied, hands on waist.“It’s just that…” I paused. “I think you wish I was the one getting arrested.” He heaved a sigh,“I would feel better if no one was arrested, Michael. Now that it has happened like this, we need to make sure Jason gets out of jail unscathed. I want you to reach out to my lawyer and tell him to handle this case personally.”“That might be dangerous in the long run,” I muttered. “If by any chance he is convicted for the crime, you will be tagged an accomplice by the press since you’re tied to him by the same lawyer.”Baldwin sighed, “I still can’t wrap my head around this. I d
Michael I walked into the office stealthily, acknowledging the greetings I got from the employees. For some reason, the place looked healthier towards me than before and I wondered what had changed.I sat down on my chair, ready to start work for the day. I had switched on my laptop when Jason appeared. He wore a navy blue shirt with black-colored trousers and shoes. He smiled widely and I might have noticed a sparkle. Maybe he visited his dentist or something.“Good morning,” he muttered, smiling. I raised my head in surprise,“Did you just greet me properly? The sun must have risen in the east today.”“It always rises in the east, Mike. If you wanted to insinuate something unusual, you should have said west,” Jason replied calmly. I frowned,“Oh yeah, you are still annoying. Maybe there was nothing unusual.” I focused on my laptop again but Jason didn’t stop hovering around.“I’m pretty sure you have noticed a difference with how the members of the staff are addressing you today,”
BruceI smiled, a hint of excitement on my face. Michael could probably tell as well.“Will you punish the arsonists?” I asked, looking into his eyes. I knew well enough that Michael was the one behind the arson himself.“Secretly, I would,” he replied casually. “The person who burned down the warehouse is Baldwin’s new assistant, Jason. He is an ex-boxer with a history of sports violence and he hired the people who burned down the warehouse. If you make an alliance with me, I will find the arsonists and make them confess so Jason can be arrested. That will be my first gift to you.”I had read Jason’s file which Kelvin submitted about a month ago so I knew much already. According to what was noted, Jason seemed to be competing with Michael for Baldwin’s favor.I guess this was Michael’s ploy to kill two birds with one stone. I played along, knowing it would help me in the long run.“I would appreciate the gift,” I told him, smiling.“Ah, according to our chief security officer, the lo
Natasha “I will take care of it myself. Please trust me,” I begged.Bruce stared at me for a few seconds and then nodded, giving me permission.“But you don’t have all the time in the world. Take care of it within twenty-four hours else I will have no other choice but to get involved. You must rem
BruceI walked into the room with a commanding presence. I had my lawyer with me and both of us sat down facing the other duo; Baldwin and his lawyer.I crossed my legs confidently and then stared at Baldwin.“You might have believed you won this round…” Baldwin began by saying.“Didn’t I win?” I a

BruceI looked towards Natasha for help but she looked away immediately, denying me the help I needed.I took a deep breath and turned to my grandmother who was gazing at me sternly.“Can you not answer me, young man?” my grandmother was asking. “Have you become dumb?”“Take a deep breath, grandma,
