The apartment smelled exactly the same.

 Dust.

 Old books.

 Rain trapped in the curtains.

And the faint lavender scent of the candles Elena's mother used to burn whenever the Laurent family had guests.

Elena stood just inside the doorway, holding her suitcase.

For several seconds, she didn't move.

This place had once been home.

Before the Laurent name became something people whispered about.

 Before the companies collapsed.

Before lawyers started knocking on the door.

Before her grandfather disappeared from the public eye.

Before Elena learned that wealth could vanish almost overnight.

 She set her suitcase down.

The apartment was small compared with the Vale mansion.

That was exactly why she liked it.

 There were no marble floors.

 No enormous chandeliers.

No staff waiting around every corner.

 No family portraits watching her.

 Just old furniture and memories.

 Elena walked to the window.

City traffic moved below, headlights glowing through the evening rain.

 Her phone buzzed.

 She ignored it.

A minute later, it buzzed again.

 Then again.

She finally pulled it from her handbag.

 Three missed calls.

 Unknown Number.

 A message appeared beneath them.

Ms. Laurent, my name is Jonathan Pierce. I was your grandfather's attorney.

 Elena froze.

Her grandfather had been dead for four years.

 She read the message again.

 Another arrived.

There is something you need to know about the Laurent family.

 Elena's heart began beating faster.

 She typed:

 Who gave you my number?

 The reply came almost immediately.

 Your grandfather did.

 Elena stared at the screen.

 Impossible.

Her grandfather had been dead for years.

 She typed again.

 What do you want?

The response took longer this time.

To deliver something he left for you.

 Elena looked around the apartment.

The old walls suddenly felt different.

As though the past had been waiting quietly for her to return.

 She called the number.

A man answered on the second ring.

 "Ms. Laurent."

 "Who are you?"

"I already told you. Jonathan Pierce."

 "You're my grandfather's lawyer?"

 "I was."

 "Was?"

 A pause.

"I resigned from Laurent Holdings shortly before your grandfather died."

 Elena frowned.

 "Why?"

 "Because he discovered something."

Her grip tightened around the phone.

 "What?"

"I can't discuss it over the phone."

"Then tell me where to meet you."

 Another pause.

 "Are you alone?"

 Elena looked toward the door.

 "Yes."

 "Are you sure?"

 "Yes."

 "Good."

 His voice lowered.

"Then listen carefully. Do not tell anyone about this conversation."

 "Why?"

"Because there are people who have spent years making sure this information never reaches you."

 Elena's pulse quickened.

"Are you saying my grandfather was murdered?"

 "No."

 "Then what?"

"I said I can't discuss it over the phone."

 She closed her eyes.

Three years ago, Elena had believed her family's destruction was simply bad luck.

 A failed investment.

A series of unfortunate business decisions.

 Her father's death.

 The collapse of Laurent Holdings.

 The disappearance of assets.

But she'd never believed there was a conspiracy.

 Until now.

 "Where are you?" she asked.

 "At the old Laurent estate."

 Elena went still.

Nobody had been there since her grandfather died.

The property had been sealed after the family's financial collapse.

 "Why are you there?"

"Because your grandfather instructed me to wait here."

 "For four years?"

 "No."

 Jonathan's voice became quieter.

 "Only until you returned."

Elena stared at the rain-streaked window.

"How did he know I'd return?"

 "I don't think he knew."

 "Then why?”

 "He left instructions."

 "What instructions?"

"I'll tell you when you arrive."

 The line went dead.

 Elena stood motionless.

 Then she grabbed her coat.

 Something was wrong.

 She could feel it.

The kind of instinct people developed after being hurt enough times.

She had spent three years learning to survive Adrian's coldness.

Now she was learning that the world outside her marriage might be even more dangerous.

 She reached for the door.

 Then stopped.

 Adrian.

 The thought came unexpectedly.

 Should she tell him?

 No.

 She almost laughed at herself.

Why would she tell the man who had just divorced her?

And why would she trust someone who had made it clear she meant nothing to him?

Besides, Jonathan had specifically said not to tell anyone.

Elena slipped her phone into her pocket.

 She was going alone.

The old Laurent estate sat on the outskirts of the city.

 The gate was rusted.

 The gardens were overgrown.

 The once-grand house looked abandoned.

Elena stood outside for a moment.

She remembered running through those gardens as a child.

Her grandfather chasing her with a newspaper.

Her grandmother shouting from the veranda.

 Her father laughing.

For years, she had avoided this place because every corner contained a memory.

Now she realized memories weren't always meant to be escaped.

Sometimes they were where the answers were buried.

 The gate opened.

 Elena walked inside.

 The front door was unlocked.

 "Mr. Pierce?"

 No answer.

 She stepped into the foyer.

 Dust covered everything.

Then she heard a sound behind her.

 She turned.

 Nothing.

 Her heart raced.

 "Mr. Pierce?"

 A light came on upstairs.

 Elena froze.

Then a man's voice called down.

 "Ms. Laurent?"

 "Yes."

 "Come upstairs."

 She followed the voice.

Jonathan Pierce stood at the end of the corridor.

He was older than she expected.

 Late sixties.

 Silver hair.

 Dark suit.

A leather briefcase in his hand.

He looked at Elena for several seconds.

 Then his expression softened.

 "You look like your grandmother."

 Elena peeped a smile.

 "I've heard that before."

 He nodded.

 "I imagine you have."

 She glanced at the briefcase.

"What did my grandfather leave me?"

 Jonathan didn't answer.

Instead, he walked toward an old painting.

He removed it from the wall.

Behind it was a small safe.

 Elena stared.

"My grandfather had a safe here?"

 "Yes."

 "I've never seen it."

 "That was the point."

 Jonathan entered a combination.

 The lock clicked.

Inside was a black metal box.

 He lifted it carefully.

 Elena's pulse quickened.

 "What is that?"

 "Your inheritance."

 She frowned.

"I thought my grandfather left me shares."

 "He did."

 "What else?"

 Jonathan looked directly at her.

 "The truth."

 He opened the box.

 Inside were documents.

 Photographs.

 A USB drive.

 Several old bank statements.

 And one sealed envelope.

Her name was written across it.

 ELENA LAURENT

 The handwriting was unmistakable.

 Her grandfather's.

 Elena reached for the envelope.

 Her fingers trembled.

 She opened it.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

 She unfolded it.

 My dearest Elena,

If you're reading this, then the worst has already happened.

 Her breath caught.

 She continued.

Our family did not lose Laurent Holdings by accident.

 Elena looked up.

 Jonathan watched her silently.

 She read on.

Someone inside our circle betrayed us.

 Her heart hammered.

I spent years trying to discover who. I found the answer, but by the time I understood what was happening, it was too late.

 Elena's eyes moved faster.

There are two families connected to this betrayal.

 She stopped.

 Two families.

 She knew one.

 The Laurents.

Her eyes dropped to the next line.

The second family is the Vale family.

The letter slipped slightly in her hands.

 Adrian.

His name seemed to appear in her mind before she even read it.

 She continued.

Do not trust anyone connected to Adrian Vale.

 Elena stopped breathing.

 Jonathan's expression remained grim.

 "Why?" she whispered.

"Because your grandfather believed the Vale family knew what happened."

 "But Adrian?"

 Jonathan hesitated.

 "Your grandfather specifically mentioned him."

 Elena looked up sharply.

 "What did he say?"

 Jonathan didn't answer.

 "Mr. Pierce."

 He sighed.

"He said Adrian Vale might be innocent."

 Elena stared at him.

 "What?"

 "He wasn't certain."

"Then why did he warn me about him?"

"Because your grandfather didn't know which side Adrian was on."

 Elena's mind raced.

 The divorce.

 The forged signature.

 Adrian's mother.

 Sophia wearing her grandmother's necklace.

 Her family's collapse.

Suddenly, pieces that had seemed unrelated began moving toward one another.

 Jonathan closed the box.

 "There is more."

 Elena looked at him.

 "More?"

 He nodded.

"Your grandfather left one final instruction."

 "What?"

 Jonathan's expression changed.

He looked almost afraid to say it.

"He told me that if you ever returned to the Laurent estate after your marriage to Adrian ended, I was to give you everything."

 "Everything?"

"The companies. The accounts. The evidence."

 Elena stared at him.

"My family doesn't have anything left."

 Jonathan smiled sadly.

"That's what everyone was supposed to believe."

 Her heartbeat thundered.

 "What are you saying?"

 Jonathan leaned closer.

"Your grandfather moved the Laurent family's most valuable assets before the collapse."

 "Where?"

"Somewhere no one could find them."

 "Who controls them now?"

 "You do."

 Elena's mouth fell open.

For years, she had believed she was the last surviving piece of a destroyed family.

But her grandfather had been planning for her.

 Waiting for her.

 Protecting something.

Jonathan placed the sealed documents in front of her.

 "There is one final matter."

 "What?"

He looked toward the dark window.

"Your grandfather believed the people who destroyed your family would eventually come looking for you."

 Elena's blood ran cold.

 "Why?"

"Because you're the only person who can reclaim what they stole."

He pushed the black metal box toward her.

"And because there is something inside that box Adrian Vale must never discover."

 Elena stared at him.

 "What's inside?"

Jonathan's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Your grandfather left you something Adrian Vale must never discover."

Outside, thunder rolled across the night.

Elena looked down at the box.

For three years, she had believed she had lost everything.

 Her family.

 Her fortune.

 Her marriage.

 Her future.

 Now she realized something terrifying.

 She hadn't lost everything.

 Someone had been hiding it.

And whoever had destroyed the Laurent family had probably been waiting all these years for Elena to come back and claim it.

She closed her fingers around the box.

 "Mr. Pierce."

 "Yes?"

 "Who else knows I'm here?"

 Jonathan's face went pale.

Before he could answer, headlights appeared beyond the estate gates.

 A black vehicle stopped outside.

 Another pulled in behind it.

 Elena turned toward the window.

 Two men stepped out.

 Jonathan whispered one word.

 "Run."

Elena's heart slammed against her ribs.

 "Who are they?"

 Jonathan grabbed the box.

"People who should have believed you were still gone."

The front gate began to close.

 And Elena suddenly understood.

Her return wasn't a secret anymore.

 Someone had been watching.

 And they had found her.

The black car was getting closer. Elena could see its headlights in the side mirror, two white circles cutting through the darkness. Jonathan kept both hands on the steering wheel.
