By nine the next morning, Elena Laurent had made a decision.

She was going back.

Not to beg Adrian.

Not to change his mind.

And certainly not to save a marriage that had already been buried by the man who was supposed to protect it.

She was going back for her things.

Three years of her life were still inside the Vale mansion.

Her books.

Her clothes.

Her grandmother's photographs.

The small wooden jewelry box her mother had given her before she died.

And a handful of things she had never been able to explain to Adrian because, until yesterday, she'd believed there would always be time.

Now there wasn't.

The black sedan stopped outside Vale International shortly after ten.

Elena stared through the window at the towering glass building.

Vale International.

Adrian's kingdom.

For three years, she'd watched him build it higher while her own life quietly disappeared behind him.

Today, she felt strangely calm.

Pain had a strange way of changing people.

At first, it made you desperate.

Then angry.

Then tired.

And eventually, if you survived long enough, it made you clear-headed.

Elena stepped out of the car.

The receptionist looked up.

Recognition flashed across her face.

"Mrs. Vale."

Elena paused.

She almost corrected her.

Then remembered.

"Ex-wife," she said quietly.

The receptionist's smile disappeared.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be."

Elena walked toward the private elevators.

The security guard immediately stepped aside.

No one stopped her.

Everyone in the building knew who she was.

They simply didn't know how different she would look after yesterday.

She reached the executive floor.

Adrian's assistant, Clara Morgan, stood as soon as Elena approached.

"Mrs. Vale."

"Elena is fine."

Clara nodded awkwardly.

"Mr. Vale is in his office."

"I know."

Elena had expected to feel nervous.

Instead, she felt nothing.

That surprised her.

For three years, simply hearing Adrian's footsteps had been enough to make her heart race.

Now, the closer she got to his office, the quieter her heartbeat became.

She reached the double doors.

They were slightly open.

Elena raised her hand.

Then stopped.

She heard a woman's laughter.

Soft.

Familiar.

She pushed the door open.

And froze.

Sophia Hart was sitting behind Adrian's desk.

Not standing beside it.

Not waiting for him.

Sitting in his chair.

Adrian's chair.

Her legs crossed casually beneath an elegant cream dress.

A cup of coffee sat beside her hand.

On her wrist was a diamond bracelet Elena recognized.

One Adrian had bought years ago.

But it wasn't the bracelet that made Elena's breath catch.

It was the necklace.

A delicate gold chain with a small emerald pendant.

Elena's favorite necklace.

Her grandmother's necklace.

The one she had worn on her wedding day.

The one she had kept locked away because it was the only valuable thing she had brought into the marriage that had belonged to her family.

The necklace Adrian had once called beautiful.

The necklace that had disappeared from her jewelry box three weeks ago.

Elena stared at Sophia.

Sophia slowly touched the emerald.

"Oh."

She smiled.

"You noticed."

Elena's eyes hardened.

"Take it off."

Sophia didn't move.

Instead, she glanced at the necklace as though admiring a new purchase.

"Adrian gave it to me."

"No."

Elena's voice was quiet.

"He didn't."

Sophia's smile widened.

"You seem very certain."

"Because it belonged to my grandmother."

Sophia leaned back in the chair.

"Well, it belongs to me now."

Elena stared at her.

There were moments in life when anger came like fire.

This wasn't one of them.

This was ice.

Cold.

Sharp.

Precise.

"Where did you get it?"

Sophia shrugged.

"You should ask Adrian."

"I am asking you."

Sophia laughed.

"You're still acting like you have some authority here."

Elena glanced around the office.

At Adrian's photographs.

His awards.

The enormous city view behind the desk.

Then she looked at the woman wearing her necklace.

"I was his wife yesterday."

"And today?"

Sophia stood.

"You're nobody."

The words should have hurt.

They didn't.

Not anymore.

Elena stepped forward.

"You've wanted this for a long time, haven't you?"

Sophia's expression changed.

Just slightly.

There it was.

The truth beneath the polished smile.

"Perhaps."

"How long?"

"Long enough."

Elena studied her.

Three years of memories suddenly rearranged themselves.

Sophia had always been around.

At corporate dinners.

Charity events.

Business conferences.

Family gatherings.

She had always stood a little too close to Adrian.

Always touched his arm.

Always smiled when Elena walked into the room.

Elena had convinced herself it meant nothing.

She had trusted Adrian.

That had been her mistake.

"Did you know?" Elena asked.

Sophia frowned.

"Know what?"

"About the divorce."

"Of course."

"Before me?"

Sophia's silence answered.

Elena's fist tightened.

"You knew."

"I knew Adrian was going to end the marriage."

"When?"

Sophia smiled.

"Does it matter?"

"It does to me."

Sophia walked around the desk.

She stopped inches away.

"You know what your problem was, Elena?"

Elena said nothing.

"You thought being his wife made you important."

Sophia touched the emerald pendant.

"You thought sitting beside him at dinners meant you belonged in his world."

She smiled.

"You never understood that Adrian was always going to choose someone like me."

Elena looked at her.

"Someone who wears stolen jewelry?"

Sophia's smile disappeared.

"Careful."

"No."

Elena's gaze dropped to the necklace.

"You're the one who should be careful."

Sophia's eyes narrowed.

For the first time, Elena saw something ugly beneath her perfect appearance.

Possessiveness.

Ambition.

And something else.

Hatred.

"You took this from my room."

"I didn't steal anything."

"Then who gave it to you?"

Sophia didn't answer.

Elena took another step forward.

"Adrian?"

Still nothing.

"His mother?"

Sophia's eyes flashed.

That was enough.

Elena noticed.

She always had.

People thought she was quiet because she was weak.

They were wrong.

She was quiet because she listened.

And people revealed themselves when they believed nobody was paying attention.

"Interesting," Elena murmured.

Sophia's expression hardened.

"What?"

"You looked away when I mentioned his mother."

"You're imagining things."

"Maybe."

Elena turned toward the door.

Sophia's voice stopped her.

"You really are leaving?"

Elena looked back.

Sophia folded her arms.

"After everything?"

"Everything?"

"You lost."

Elena stared at her.

Sophia smiled.

"Adrian divorced you."

She gestured around the office.

"You're walking away from all of this."

Her voice became almost triumphant.

"And I'm still here."

Elena's eyes moved slowly across the room.

For years, this office had represented everything Adrian had built.

His power.

His reputation.

His money.

His influence.

Sophia thought Elena was walking away from it empty-handed.

She didn't understand.

Elena had never wanted any of it.

Not really.

She had wanted Adrian.

And now that she knew she couldn't have his love, none of his empire mattered.

"Congratulations," Elena said.

Sophia blinked.

"On what?"

"You finally got what you wanted."

Sophia smiled.

"Not yet."

Elena paused.

Sophia walked closer.

The emerald pendant caught the sunlight.

"You're still holding on to the idea that Adrian might come after you."

Elena said nothing.

"He won't."

Sophia's voice dropped.

"He'll forget you."

Elena's fingers tightened around the door handle.

"That's fine."

"Is it?"

"Yes."

Sophia laughed.

"You're lying."

"No."

Elena turned to face her fully.

"For the first time in three years, I'm telling the truth."

Sophia's smile faded.

Elena's voice remained calm.

"I don't need Adrian to choose me."

She looked directly at the necklace.

"And I don't need you to prove anything to me."

Sophia stepped closer.

"You'll regret leaving him."

Elena opened the door.

"Perhaps."

Then she stopped.

"But I won't regret leaving a man who never loved me."

She walked out.

The elevator doors closed behind her.

Only then did Sophia's confident expression disappear.

Her hand went to the necklace.

She squeezed the emerald.

"Stupid woman."

She walked back toward Adrian's desk.

Then she heard footsteps.

Adrian entered the office.

He stopped when he saw Sophia.

"Why are you here?"

Sophia smiled immediately.

"I came to see you."

His gaze moved to her neck.

He froze.

The emerald.

His expression changed.

"Where did you get that?"

Sophia touched it.

"You gave it to me."

"I did not."

Her smile faltered.

For the first time, Adrian looked genuinely angry.

"Take it off."

Sophia stared at him.

"But—"

"Now."

Her fingers trembled as they reached for the clasp.

Adrian walked toward his desk.

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

He opened the drawer where Elena had kept her jewelry.

Empty.

His eyes narrowed.

He remembered Elena saying things had disappeared from her room.

He had dismissed it.

Assumed she had misplaced them.

Now he wasn't so sure.

"Who gave you this necklace?"

Sophia said nothing.

Adrian looked at her.

"Sophia."

She swallowed.

"Your mother."

The room went silent.

Adrian's face darkened.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

He stepped closer.

"Sophia, if my mother gave you Elena's necklace, I want to know why."

Sophia looked away.

For the first time, uncertainty crossed her face.

Adrian reached for his phone.

Then stopped.

Something else had caught his attention.

On the desk lay a single sheet of paper.

Elena's handwriting.

A note she'd apparently left behind.

Only four words.

I know about the necklace.

Adrian stared at it.

His mind raced.

The forged signature.

His mother's involvement.

Elena's missing jewelry.

Sophia wearing the necklace.

For the first time, the divorce no longer looked like a simple ending.

It looked planned.

And somewhere inside that plan was a secret Adrian had never been meant to discover.

Three floors below, Elena stepped out of the building.

She stopped beside her car.

Her hand went instinctively to the empty place around her neck.

The necklace was gone.

But she wasn't going to forget it.

Not now.

Not after what she'd seen.

She looked back at the glass tower.

A strange certainty settled over her.

Someone had wanted Sophia in Adrian's life.

Someone had wanted Elena out.

And if they thought stealing a necklace would make Elena disappear quietly, they had made a serious mistake.

Because Elena had finally stopped asking why Adrian didn't love her.

She was beginning to ask a much more dangerous question.

Who had worked so hard to make sure he never would?

Back inside the office, Sophia watched Adrian read Elena's note.

Then, when he finally looked up, she smiled.

But there was no warmth in it.

Only calculation.

She leaned toward him and whispered,

"Soon, everything that belongs to you will be mine."

Adrian stared at her.

And for the first time, he wondered whether the woman standing before him had ever been his ally at all.
