Reaching at their apartment, after their escape.

Elena stared at the documents she spread across her father’s old desk.

For several minutes, she couldn't make sense of what she was seeing.

 Numbers.

 Account codes.

 Trust agreements.

 Company registrations.

 International banking records.

Names she recognized from the financial world and others she didn't.

Her hands trembled as she lifted the first document.

 "This can't be right."

Jonathan Pierce stood across from her.

 "It is."

 "But Laurent Holdings was bankrupt."

 "No."

 Elena looked up.

 "Everyone said it was."

"Everyone was supposed to say it."

 The room seemed to tilt.

For years, Elena had carried the humiliation of being the last surviving Laurent.

She remembered watching her father's company collapse.

 Banks calling.

 Employees being laid off.

 Assets frozen.

 Properties sold.

 Friends disappearing.

People who had once called her father sir suddenly refusing to answer his calls.

The Laurent fortune hadn't simply disappeared.

 It had been publicly dismantled.

At least, that's what the world believed.

Jonathan picked up a thick folder.

"Your grandfather knew the company couldn't survive the attack directly."

 "What attack?"

"That's what he spent the last years of his life investigating."

 He opened the folder.

"The moment he realized Laurent Holdings was being deliberately stripped of its assets, he moved the most valuable holdings into private trusts."

 Elena stared at him.

 "How?"

 "Quietly."

 "Without my father knowing?"

"Your father knew some of it."

 "Some?"

 Jonathan nodded.

"Your grandfather didn't trust anyone with the entire plan."

Elena looked down at the papers.

 A trust agreement.

 Then another.

 Then another.

 Each contained the Laurent name.

But the assets listed inside were staggering.

 Real estate.

 Private equity holdings.

 Energy investments.

 Technology companies.

 Offshore funds.

 Patents.

 Art collections.

 Shares in major corporations.

 Elena's mouth went dry.

 "How much?"

 Jonathan didn't answer immediately.

 "Enough."

 "That's not an answer."

"Your grandfather believed giving you a number too early would make you careless."

 Elena gave a disbelieving laugh.

 "Careless?"

"You've spent three years living as though you had nothing."

 "I thought I had nothing."

 "Exactly."

 Jonathan closed the folder.

 "That made you safer."

 Elena looked at him.

"So while I was being called a gold digger by Adrian's family..."

"You were unknowingly the heir to one of the largest private fortunes in the country."

 Her chest tightened.

 The irony was almost cruel.

Adrian had accused her of marrying him for money.

His mother had humiliated her for supposedly bringing nothing into the marriage.

They had looked at her old clothes, her quiet personality, her modest lifestyle and decided she was poor.

All the while, her grandfather had hidden a fortune worth more than anything Adrian could have given her.

Elena lowered herself into the chair.

 "Why didn't he tell me?"

"Because he wanted you to survive."

 "Survive what?"

 Jonathan looked toward the windows.

"The people who took everything from your family."

A chill moved down Elena's spine.

She looked at the documents again.

 "Who controls the trusts?"

 "You do."

 "Now?"

 "Now."

 "How?"

"Your grandfather established a succession clause. The assets would remain dormant until you reached a specific condition."

 "What condition?"

 Jonathan met her eyes.

 "The dissolution of your marriage."

 Elena froze.

 "What?"

"Your grandfather anticipated that your marriage to Adrian might put you in danger."

 She shook her head.

 "He knew Adrian?"

 "Not personally."

 "Then why him?"

 Jonathan reached for another document.

"Because the Vale family was involved in Laurent business dealings long before you married Adrian."

 Elena's face tightened.

"So my grandfather expected me to marry him?"

 "No."

 Jonathan's expression became serious.

"He expected that if you ever married Adrian, the people watching your family might see you as vulnerable."

 "And they would?"

"Because the Laurent heir would be living inside the Vale family."

 Elena stared at him.

 Suddenly, her marriage looked different.

 Had Adrian's family known?

Had they known who she really was?

Had someone deliberately encouraged the marriage?

She remembered Margaret Vale's attitude toward her.

 The insults.

 The suspicion.

The constant accusation that Elena had married Adrian for money.

Perhaps Margaret genuinely believed Elena was insignificant.

Or perhaps she knew exactly who Elena was and had another reason for wanting her gone.

 "Jonathan."

 "Yes?"

"Did my grandfather ever meet Adrian?"

 "No."

 "Did he ever investigate him?"

 "Yes."

 Elena's heart skipped.

 "What did he find?"

 Jonathan opened another folder.

 "Nothing conclusive."

 "That doesn't sound reassuring."

 "It isn't."

He pushed several pages toward her.

"Your grandfather discovered that someone had been moving money between Laurent-linked accounts and companies associated with the Vale family."

 Elena scanned the records.

 Millions had moved.

 Not once.

 Repeatedly.

 Over several years.

"These transfers happened before I married Adrian."

 "Yes."

 "And after?"

 Jonathan nodded.

 "Some continued after the marriage."

 Elena's breathing became shallow.

 "Who authorized them?"

 "We don't know."

 "You have to know."

"We know the accounts. We don't know who ultimately controlled them."

 Elena stared at the numbers.

The money trail was complicated by design.

 Shell companies.

 Holding companies.

 Trusts.

 Intermediaries.

Anyone unfamiliar with corporate finance might have looked at the paperwork and seen nothing.

But Elena understood enough to recognize what she was seeing.

 A maze.

Someone had built layers between the money and its destination.

Whoever did this didn't want to hide a few million.

They wanted to hide an entire empire.

 Jonathan handed her another document.

"This is the most important one."

 Elena took it.

 It was older.

The paper had yellowed around the edges.

At the top was a list of names.

 Trustees.

 Executives.

 Financial advisers.

 Corporate representatives.

 Elena read down the page.

 Then stopped.

 One name looked familiar.

 Very familiar.

 Her pulse quickened.

 "No."

 Jonathan said nothing.

 She read it again.

 Margaret Vale.

 Adrian's mother.

 Elena's fingers went numb.

 "Why is her name here?"

 Jonathan's expression was grisly.

 "We don't know."

"You just told me my grandfather was investigating the Vale family."

 "Yes."

"And now you're showing me a document with Adrian's mother listed as a trustee?"

 "Not a trustee."

 Elena looked at him.

 "Then what?"

Jonathan pointed to the line beneath her name.

 Authorized Financial Liaison.

 Elena stared at it.

 "What does that mean?"

"It means she had access to certain Laurent financial structures."

 "Why?"

"That is exactly what your grandfather was trying to discover."

 Elena stood abruptly.

The chair scraped against the floor.

 "How much access?"

 "Enough to move funds."

 Her mind raced.

 The divorce papers.

 The forged signature.

 Margaret's hostility.

 Sophia wearing her grandmother's necklace.

 The mysterious financial transfers.

 The hidden Laurent trusts.

 Everything was beginning to connect.

 But one question remained.

 "Did Margaret steal from us?"

 Jonathan shook his head.

 "Not necessarily."

 "Then what did she do?"

 "We don't know yet."

Elena looked at the document again.

The signature beside Margaret's name was unmistakable.

She had seen that handwriting before.

 On the divorce papers.

 On letters from Adrian's family.

 On legal documents.

 Her facial muscles twitched.

 "Jonathan."

 "Yes?"

"Why would my grandfather leave this?"

"Because he wanted you to find the truth."

 Elena looked toward the window.

 The rain had stopped.

The world outside looked strangely peaceful.

 She knew better now.

 Peace could be an illusion.

Someone had spent years hiding the Laurent fortune.

 Someone had manipulated corporate records.

Someone had possibly influenced her marriage.

And someone inside the Vale family had access to her family's money.

 Her phone suddenly vibrated.

 Elena glanced at the screen.

A message from an unknown number.

 You should have stayed gone.

 Her blood ran cold.

 Jonathan saw her expression.

 "What is it?"

 She showed him.

 His face hardened.

 "Don't reply."

 "Why?"

"Because they want to know whether you're frightened."

Elena looked at the message again.

 Then she deleted it.

 "No."

 Jonathan frowned.

 "No?"

 "I'm not frightened."

 She picked up the folder.

 "Not anymore."

She had spent three years believing she was a woman who had lost everything.

A woman whose family had failed.

A woman whose husband had rejected her.

A woman who had no choice but to start over.

 But the truth was different.

She hadn't been abandoned by fortune.

She had been hidden from it.

And now that the truth had found her, Elena wasn't going to run.

 She began organizing the documents.

"How long will it take to activate the trusts?"

 Jonathan blinked.

 "Some are already active."

 "Then transfer control."

 "All of them?"

 "All."

 "Elena, that's a massive undertaking."

 "I know."

 "You'll need lawyers."

 "Get them."

 "Accountants."

 "Get them."

 "Security."

 Elena looked up.

 "Get the best."

Jonathan studied her for a moment.

 Something had changed.

The woman who had walked into the house carrying a suitcase was gone.

In her place stood someone who had finally discovered the weight of her own name.

 "There's one problem," Jonathan said.

 "What?"

"Some of the trusts have conditions."

 "Such as?"

"Certain assets can't be transferred until the original beneficiaries are verified."

 "Who are the beneficiaries?"

 Jonathan hesitated.

 "Your grandfather."

 "He's dead."

 "Your father."

 "He's dead too."

 Elena's eyes narrowed.

 "Then who?"

Jonathan slowly opened the final page.

"The ultimate beneficiary is listed as—"

 He stopped.

 "What?"

Before he could answer, headlights swept across the windows.

 Elena turned.

 Another vehicle had stopped outside.

 Jonathan moved toward the curtains.

 His face changed.

 "Someone followed us."

 Elena stood.

 "Who?"

 "I don't know."

 The front gate opened.

A black SUV rolled into the estate.

 Then another.

 Elena reached for the folder.

 "Take the documents."

 Jonathan grabbed the box.

 "Where?"

 "Somewhere safe."

 "And you?"

 Elena looked at the windows.

 She wasn't going to hide.

 Not anymore.

Then she glanced down at the document with Margaret Vale's name.

 Her eyes hardened.

There was a traitor inside the Vale family.

And Elena intended to find out exactly who.

She folded the document and slipped it into her coat.

 Outside, car doors opened.

 Men stepped into the rain.

 Elena looked at Jonathan.

"How many people know about the trusts?"

 "Very few."

"How many know I'm the heir?"

 "Even fewer."

 She nodded.

 "Then we have a problem."

 Jonathan's voice was barely audible.

 "What?"

Elena looked toward the approaching shadows.

 "Someone already knows."

She tightened her grip on the document.

And for the first time, Elena understood what her grandfather had really meant.

The Laurent fortune hadn't been lost.

 It had been waiting.

Waiting for its rightful heir to return.

And now that Elena Laurent had come back to claim it, someone inside the Vale family was terrified of what she might discover.

Elena knew she had reached the safe house when the car stopped pretending to be a car.The engine went silent. No streetlights. No traffic. No houses close enough to identify. The black car was getting closer. Elena could see its headlights in the side mirror, two white circles cutting through the darkness. Jonathan kept both hands on the steering wheel. "How far to the next town?" Elena asked. "About fifteen minutes." "Can we make it?" "We have to." The car behind them accelerated. Jonathan's eyes narrowed. "They're not trying to pass." Elena looked back. The vehicle moved toward the center line. Then dropped behind them. Then accelerated again. A warning. A threat. "They're going to hit us," Elena whispered. Jonathan didn't answer. He didn't need to. He pressed the accelerator. The car surged forward. Elena gripped the door. "Who are they?" "I don't know." "You knew someone was following me." "I suspected."
