Amanda took a step back as her sister sashayed onto the balcony. Unexpectedly, she ran into Lucas, who was standing behind her.
His hand came up to wrap around her waist to steady her. As if burned by his touch, she pulled away quickly and stepped farther from him.
Rebecca smiled widely at Lucas and stuck her hand out. "Hello. I'm Rebecca Lemaiyan. It's nice to finally meet you."
Lucas accepted her greeting. "Lucas Erikson."
Rebecca waved her hand in dismissal. "Everybody knows you. My father wouldn't stop gloating about bringing you here. Tell me. What is it about this shabby company that drew you from New York?"
Amanda's eyes narrowed. Shabby? Of course, Rebecca never passed up an opportunity to put her and what she cared about down.
"I wanted a new challenge," Lucas replied. He arched an eyebrow. "But I believe it's far from shabby."
"Oh. I know your type."
"Do you?"
"You like working on broken things." Her eyes flickered to Amanda for a split second. "Then once they're working, you get bored and move on to the next. It gives you a high, doesn't it?"
"If something is no longer exciting, it does become boring."
Amanda cleared her throat. "I'll leave you two."
Rebecca turned to her. "What's the hurry, sis? Come on, tell me. Are you okay? I was worried you'd have a hard time at today's party. You didn't have to come, you know. Everybody would have understood."
Amanda scoffed. "Excuse me? I'm fine. It's my company's party and I wanted to be here."
"Your company? Not technically, but okay. But you know what I mean. After what happened with the last CEO—"
"Mind your own business, Rebecca."
"Calm down, I'm just looking out for you."
"Leave me alone!”
"Ladies?" A new voice interrupted, and Amanda cursed viciously in her mind. Keith.
Rebecca turned to her husband, a pretend frown on her face. "I'm worried about her, but you know how she gets."
"Amanda is fine. Right, Mandy?" Keith asked, standing beside his wife and looking over at her.
Amanda clenched her teeth together as she stared back at him. Mandy? The nerve of him! He had no right to call her that. She was of half a mind to walk past them and leave when he turned his attention to Lucas.
"Hello, Lucas. Congratulations, my man." The two proceeded to exchange a handshake and hug.
My man?
Were they close? Or had they met in the course of the week Lucas had been at the company?
With one final glare at her sister, Amanda slipped away while the two men were caught up in conversation.
She grabbed a flute of champagne from the first server she came across. She savoured the fruity taste of the wine. Hopefully, it would help her relax and stop thinking about killing the three people on the terrace.
Come to think of it, they were perfect company for each other. Two lying men and an insufferable sister.
For her peace of mind, she needed to steer clear of all of them.
Tyra appeared, a glass of wine in hand. "So, what do you think?" She wiggled her brow in suggestion.
Amanda blinked, trying to bring her mind back to earth. "About what?"
"Mr. CEO," Tyra replied.
"Oh."
"Oh?"
"I'll look at his details to see whether he's as good as Dad keeps insisting."
Tyra sighed impatiently. "You know damn well I'm not talking about his work performance."
Knowing it was useless to act clueless with Tyra, she said, "I don't know, he doesn't look all that striking to me."
Tyra gaped. "What?"
She shrugged.
Tyra frowned. "Did you see him under the light?'
"Yes."
"Are you blind?"
"He's not my type, that's all."
"You're kidding with me. I know your type."
"Maybe my type changed, Tyra. Have you considered that?" She gulped down her drink and replaced it with a new one from a passing server. "I'll go say hi to Elizabeth."
She didn't wait for Tyra's protests as she made her way over to Elizabeth Jane, who was the head designer at Lemaiyan Fits.
Tyra's frown didn't let up as she watched her friend walk away. What the hell was wrong with her?
"Mandy?"
Amanda turned to find Keith standing beside her. She was standing at the end of the room, staring at the city lights through the glass windows. A quick sweep of the area revealed that Rebecca was nowhere in sight. She was doing a good job of avoiding a certain group of people. Maybe some were working just as hard to get her alone.
"I told you not to call me that."
He scratched the back of his neck. "Ah, sorry. I keep forgetting."
In the same way you forgot about me when you met Rebecca?
She kept the snide remark imprisoned in her brain.
"What do you want?" she asked.
The man had been together with her sister for seven years now. Married for three. In all those years, Amanda did an impeccable job of avoiding him.
"I was worried about you."
Amanda stared at him in wonder. Was he out of his mind? Worried about her?
"Why on earth would you be?"
"You didn't deserve what happened," he said.
"Is that supposed to make me feel better?"
"I'm sorry, I don't know what to say—"
"Then don't say anything. I don't need your pity. I'm handling my stuff well. Go back to your wife."
His eyebrows pulled together. "Please, Mandy. Don't you think it's time we went back to being friends?"
"You're funny. Do you actually believe you're any different from him?"
"What?"
"He lied to me. So did you. You cheated. So did he. Actually, you're worse. You cheated with my sister. How the fuck do I always attract men like you?"
"I thought we were past this."
"We're not past anything, Keith. I don't need you to fool me twice to know the kind of person you are."
"I did not cheat on you. We were not dating."
"Is that why you ghosted me once you went abroad? Because I didn't deserve an explanation for your sudden change of mind? Did you figure out my feelings and think it was the perfect opportunity to cut ties with the clingy, naive nineteen year old kid? Was that it? Does the fact that we were not dating mean my feelings were invalid?"
"Am—"
"You know what? This evening is already ruined, and you're making it worse. Don't come near me again."
She brushed past him, making her way towards the exit.
Maybe coming to the goddamn party wasn't such a good idea after all.
Amanda managed to make it to the front of the hotel without running into someone to stop her. She was leaving early and didn't want to draw any attention.Fortunately, she was able to get hold of her driver quickly. She instructed him to get her to her apartment before driving back for Tyra, since she was her ride.As the car peeled away from the hotel premises, she took out her smartphone and went online. On the search bar, she typed 'Lucas Erikson'.When the results loaded, his information was right there, on the first page. The first article was related to his latest career move:"Hotshot NY Fashion CEO Joins Lemaiyan Fits"She clicked on it. According to the article, Lucas had spent the past five years at the helm of the most successful fashion start-up in New York at the moment. He was with the company from the beginning and within a few years was able to make it a notable n
Two Weeks Before"Excuse me, miss?"Amanda looked up to find two vivid grey eyes on her. Grey eyes on an unbelievably handsome face that made her swallow. She blinked and placed her glass on the table."Yes?""Hello, I'm Lucas. Do you mind if I share your table? Every other one is occupied by couples or more."Her eyes took a quick trip down his body. She had noticed the guy walk into the resort lobby a few minutes ago, thanks to his tall stature and dark clothing. Now that she could see his face, she confirmed that he was indeed her type.Thick, dark lashes and eyebrows framed his intense eyes. His black hair was combed back, but a stray strand fell over onto his forehead. His lower face sported a five o'clock shadow that gave him an alluring appearance."Sure," she replied with a smile. "I don't mind."
This is crazy, Amanda thought as the two of them walked down a paved path leading to the cabins. When Lucas first came to sit with her, she had been sane enough to block any sort of sexual thought about him.Half way through dinner and two glasses of wine later, the part of her that thought rebound sex was a great idea was winning the debate in her mind. Here was a guy, gorgeous in every way, and well mannered. She was single and nothing was wrong with wanting to sleep with him. She felt she was more likely to regret not sleeping with him than doing it. How could she be with such a good looking, thoughtful guy and regret it?She stopped drinking when she started feeling excited and realised another glass would do her in. If she was going to make a move, she didn't want him to turn her down on account of her inebriation. When he asked to escort her to her cabin, she
I'm not going to regret this. The thought passed through Amanda's mind as Lucas brought her lips back to his.She was going to have a darned good night, and nothing was going to ruin that. They kissed for a while longer before Lucas pulled away, releasing her body but holding her hand. He was gazing at her with a new intensity in his eyes that made her toes curl into the rug beneath her foot.Holding her hand, he led her into the cabin. She had booked a one-bedroom cabin with a kitchen and living area. It was small, but spacious enough for one person. The wooden interior gave it a warm ambience, unlike any she had ever experienced before. Growing up, she lived in her family's big, cold mansion. A space that her, her two siblings, and their father could barely fill with laughter and warmth. As a last born, there was a ten year gap betw
Amanda woke up in the middle of the night to find herself cocooned in Lucas's warmth. His tall frame spooned her smaller one, her back pressed to his bare chest.A clock on the table revealed it was 4:04am. They had gone to sleep at midnight, after three rounds of sex and some time basking in a fire Lucas made in the fireplace. She couldn't recall the last time she felt this happy and satisfied after sex. She had just gotten out of a two-year relationship, and the sex wasn't anything to complain about. However, despite the fact that she wasn't emotionally invested in Lucas, being with him felt a hundred times more explosive.Too bad she wasn't looking for anything long-term, even just sexually. Lucas seemed like the kind of man it would be easy to get attached to if she slept around with him longer than necessary. He was quite the gentleman, and he was great in bed. It would be wise to be content with the p
Lucas stood at the window, watching the falling snow and sneaking glances at Amanda. After a quiet, awkward breakfast, she had settled near the lit fireplace, book in hand.Looking at her, it reminded him of the night before. He had made love to her on that spot, and the image was still stuck in his mind. When they went to sleep and he found himself loving how she fit in his arms way too much, he promised himself to leave first thing in the morning. He was good at separating sex from emotions. He never got attached to his hookups. So, he had no problem getting them to leave in the morning, or him leaving. And, he definitely didn't spend hours into the night imagining a future where the woman he slept with was in his bed, over and over again.Yet, holding Amanda in his arms, he felt that he never wanted to let her go. If he could get another million chances to hold her like that, he'd
That day, Lucas and Amanda stayed indoors, even after the weather cleared. Lucas left that evening once the snow was salted and mostly gone and the pavements were finally passable. The two spent the rest of the week mostly in each other's company, almost as if they had come on vacation together. They tried skating, went hiking, and camped out in the woods for two days. While they couldn't keep their hands off each other for the week they spent together, they knew that what happened in Riverside Park would remain there. Or, at least, that's what Amanda knew. Lucas never told her that he found out her identity. It was clear that if he did, it would ruin everything. There was no doubt that when she went back home and found out he was the new CEO, their relationship would take an ugly turn. But he chose not to think about that until he came to it. After his week of vacationing was done, he left Riverside Park and took a flight to the city, where his new j
When Tyra got back from the party, she found her mother waiting in her apartment. Elizabeth Okello was a tall woman in her early fifties. There was a resemblance between mother and daughter, but the lines lining the older woman's face make it harder to notice. There was always a frown on her face, or a sneer. Elizabeth was standing at the windows, looking at the city skyline beyond. Tyra's apartment was on the twelfth floor of a high-rise residential building in one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the city. "Mother?" Tyra called as she placed her keys on the side table near the door and walked into the room. Elizabeth turned, and Tyra noticed the lit cigarette in her hand. She wished
