Chapter 250

Author: Eli Sole
Following William’s orders, the doctors scheduled Layla’s chemotherapy.

No matter how much she resisted, William still sent her into the treatment room.

Standing beside him, Carter hesitated before asking, “Uncle William, aren’t you afraid she’ll hate you for forcing her into this?”

“Her life is more important than anything else.”

William’s gaze never left the tightly shut doors, his expression dark and unreadable.

Carter sighed. “You’re right. At this point, chemo is the only option. She has to hold on until Levi gets here.

“Once her treatment ends, I’ll go back to North City,” he added.

William had already told Layla that he needed to go home for Thanksgiving.

By now, saying no wasn’t an option.

And with the Lucas family in complete chaos, his parents had subtly warned him to stay out of it.

“Your uncle isn’t like you. He can handle any mess, and your grandfather would never truly abandon him. But you? You’re disposable.”

“Carter, trust your uncle. He’s not an

“I look like a ghost now… What’s the point of staying alive like this…? Can I even keep going…?” Layla sobbed, her voice breaking between gasps.William’s heart twisted in pain. He held onto her trembling body beneath the blanket, his arms tightening protectively. His eyes burned red. Taking a deep breath, he forced his voice to remain steady. “Layla, listen to me. You’re not going to die. You can make it through this.“I know it hurts, but you have to hold on. If you push through this, there’s hope. Trust me—things will get better.” But Layla was too lost in her own emotions to hear him. She cried, her sobs raw and gut-wrenching, until all that remained was a desperate, anguished wail echoing through the hospital room. *News of Layla’s emotional breakdown reached the doctor. By the time he rushed back from his rounds, she had already fallen into a medicated sleep. “This kind of situation is actually quite common,” the doctor said, looking at Layla with deep concern. “

Carter walked into the hospital room and immediately spotted the two people stuck in a silent standoff at the bathroom door. Curious, he asked, “Uncle William, Sis, what are you two doing?” Layla waved him over. “Perfect timing. Help me get Mr. Lucas out of here.” “Stay right there.” At William’s firm command, Carter froze on the spot, not even daring to lift a foot. Feeling torn, he suggested, “Uh… maybe you two should talk this out first?” “No need.” Without hesitation, William grabbed the wheelchair and smoothly pushed Layla into the bathroom. Layla panicked. “William Lucas! You’re being completely unreasonable!” He responded in an unhurried tone, “Letting a patient take care of herself—that would be unreasonable.” Layla was momentarily speechless. He used to be so respectful of boundaries. But lately, he was becoming more and more overbearing. Had his so-called gentlemanly behavior before all been an act? “I can do it myself.“Stay away from me.

“Even if they regret not spending more time with him, it’s too late now. Who are they trying to impress, crying so loudly? Weren’t they just as loud when they were arguing before?“Everyone knew they were doing it on purpose, making a scene so the old man would give in.”Carter had always hated how fake adults could be, and right now, he felt even more indignant on the old man’s behalf.“He’s gone…” Layla murmured, repeating the words as if in deep thought. Sensing the sudden shift in her emotions, William lifted his gaze and shot Carter a look. Carter instantly shut up. “Crap. Did I just say something I shouldn’t have?” he wondered.*Thankfully, Layla didn’t seem to dwell on the conversation. She continued her treatments and checkups as usual throughout the day. That evening, Carter returned with dinner, just as William stepped out to take a work call. He had just set the thermos down when Layla suddenly spoke. “Mrs. Lucas hasn’t gone back yet, has she?” Car

The next day, the moment William stepped out of the hospital room, Carter slipped a folded note into Layla’s hand. “Sis, I went home last night and thought about it for a long time. You rarely ask me for favors—how could I possibly say no?“This is Grandma Scarlett’s contact information. You can meet her in person or just talk over the phone, whichever you prefer. But…” Carter hesitated for a moment. “You absolutely cannot do anything else beyond that.” “Don’t worry.” Layla clenched the note tightly and smiled at him. “Would I ever set you up?” Carter didn’t reply, but internally, he was a wreck. Being a double agent was seriously exhausting. *That afternoon, William was in the living room, locked in a video meeting. Finally, Layla found the chance to message Scarlett. “Mrs. Lucas, this is Layla Xander. Do your words from before still stand?” On the other end, Scarlett received the message and scoffed under her breath. “What kind of trick is Layla up to no

Sean sniffled, then quickly composed himself. “Sorry, I lost my cool.” Scarlett, however, was unfazed. She cut straight to the point. “So what you’re saying is, if you see Layla, she’ll leave with you. Is that right?” Sean nodded without hesitation. “That’s right. William won’t let me see her because he’s afraid I’ll take her away.” Seeing how confident he was, Scarlett thought for a moment before nodding. “Good. Then I found the right person.“I’ll arrange for you to see Layla. Your job is to take her away for further treatment. I’ll keep William distracted. Whatever happens, I’ll take full responsibility. Do we have a deal?” Sean’s face lit up. “Of course! No problem at all!” “Good. Then it’s settled.” Scarlett picked up her phone and replied to Layla’s message. “I stand by what I said. What’s your plan?” Layla’s response came almost immediately. “Let’s go with what you suggested before. But it has to be done behind Mr. Lucas’s back. That part is up to you

With five days left until Thanksgiving, Carter had already returned to North City, but William remained by Layla’s bedside, just as he always did.Layla had been asleep all day. When she finally woke up, the hospital room was dim, lit only by a single warm bedside lamp. Outside the window, the night was deep and quiet. A sudden unease gripped her. She called out softly, “Mr. Lucas…” But instead of William, two men in black suits appeared. Layla’s expression darkened. “Who are you?” “Miss Xander, there’s no need to be afraid. We’re here under Mrs. Lucas’s orders. She sent us to take you out of the hospital.” One of them pushed a wheelchair forward. “Time is tight. Please come with us now.” “Where’s Mr. Lucas?” Layla blurted out without thinking. “Mrs. Lucas is keeping him busy. We don’t know how long she can hold him off.” Layla was silent for a moment, pressing down the sudden, inexplicable feeling of reluctance in her chest. Then, she nodded. “Alright, let’

Sean froze. “Layla, are you mad at me? I only ended up with Kiera because I had no choice.”“I don’t care who you’re with, or how it happened. And I’m definitely not mad about it.” Layla met his eyes head-on. “How many times do I have to say it before you finally believe we’re done?”“You chose Kiera, so be loyal to your choice. Don’t bring your fake feelings here and pretend they’re love—it’s disgusting.”With that, she turned to the two bodyguards in black, her voice sharp with displeasure. “Where’s Mrs. Lucas? Don’t tell me even this man was part of her plan?”“Layla, Mrs. Lucas asked me to bring you—”“I’d rather die than go with you!” Layla’s tone suddenly turned fierce. Her eyes stayed fixed on the guards. “Go ask Mrs. Lucas yourself—if she doesn’t want me dying in her hands, she’d better make sure this man disappears from my sight.”The two bodyguards exchanged uneasy glances. This wasn’t what Mrs. Lucas had told them to expect. “Layla, don’t be like t

Layla waited over an hour before Scarlett Lucas finally showed up.Scarlett walked in with a sour expression. “Why won’t you go with Sean? You haven’t even known William that long, and now you’re changing your heart already?”She stepped closer, her tone turning sharp. “Or maybe…” Scarlett narrowed her eyes. “Don’t think just because William made his feelings public that you actually stand a chance. Let me tell you, the Lucas family isn’t some place any random girl can marry into.”Hearing once again about William’s so-called confession, Layla looked completely confused. “What are you all talking about? What confession?”Scarlett blinked, stunned. “The entire world knows about it—how could you not? Don’t play dumb with me. You—”“Everyone knows?” Layla’s face was filled with genuine surprise—not a trace of pretense. Scarlett frowned. “You mean you didn’t know Chris came to the hospital to see you?”“He came to see me?” Layla looked puzzled. Scarlett fell s

When William got home and pushed open the door, he immediately saw Scarlett sitting on the sofa, stewing in anger. The living room lights weren’t even on.Even from a distance, he could feel the heavy cloud of resentment surrounding her.He casually flipped on the lights and walked over. “You really didn’t eat tonight?”Scarlett huffed, puffing up like an angry cat. “I was going to, but your father pissed me off so much I’m full of rage instead.”“Oh?” William raised an eyebrow with interest. “He came by?”“He was skulking around like a thief. I ran into him outside.”Scarlett turned to him, her eyes sharp. “Be honest with me—over the years, you’ve seen how I treated your father, haven’t you? I was good to him, right? I did everything he said!”William thought for a moment, taking the question quite seriously. “I guess you could say that.”“What do you mean, ‘guess’?” Scarlett shot him a glare. “It’s a fact! “Don’t get involved in her business anymore.” William picked up his utensils and bowl, clearly signaling he wanted to end the conversation.Layla hesitated, as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she just lowered her gaze, hiding the flicker of thought in her eyes.*Meanwhile, Scarlett was tossing and turning in bed, completely unable to sleep. Her stomach growled loudly, and eventually, she gave up and got out of bed, heading to the kitchen to raid the fridge.Inside, there was only half a bag of sad-looking whole wheat bread and a few eggs.Scarlett shut the door with a hopeless look, instantly regretting her earlier stubbornness. Why had she refused dinner?Clenching her teeth, she downed a glass of warm water, threw on a jacket, and headed out the door. She figured, after years of being spoiled with gourmet food, just a few meals of Layla’s home cooking had completely won her over. There had to be some home-style restaurant nearby that could satisfy

That evening, William knocked on the door next door. When Layla opened it, she didn’t see Scarlett anywhere and couldn’t help but ask, “Where’s Mrs. Lucas?”“She’s not coming. Probably ate enough at the gathering today.”After a brief explanation, William stepped inside, speaking casually, “I saw today’s trending topics.”“I actually invited you over to talk about that!” Layla followed behind him, her face lit up with excitement. “I really didn’t expect the promotional video to attract such a major corporation! Fabian told me the kids will soon have a brand-new space to play and learn. They’re all thrilled!“I didn’t know much about YT Corporation before this, but after hearing about everything they’ve done, I was really impressed. They’ve been committed to children’s charities for years—building schools, sponsoring education for kids in the mountains.“For a company to care so much about children’s welfare, the CEO must have a really kind heart.“He even asked Fabian for

Unexpectedly, Scarlett didn’t react the way Mrs. Jenkins had hoped. Instead, she seemed distracted.“She...” Scarlett frowned, forcing out a stiff response. “She’s definitely not a good person.”But... she didn’t seem that bad either. The second half of her thought, Scarlett kept to herself. After all, in this setting, if she dared to speak up for Layla, she would only make herself stand out and not in a good way.Besides, it was her own son that Layla had "harmed."And yet, after watching quietly these past few days, Scarlett had seen a side of Layla she had never seen before.Since the promotional video’s success, Layla had been leaving early and coming back late, throwing herself completely into her work. She didn’t even bother cooking anymore, much less looking for opportunities to see William. This didn’t look like a woman desperate to cling to someone rich. It looked more like a woman determined to become someone successful on her own.Back at the round table

“Yeah.”Just a soft, low response.Ivan was caught off guard for a moment before bursting into loud laughter. “Nice! All that hard work wasn’t for nothing. You two are finally making progress!”William had always been steady and cautious. If something didn’t fully meet his expectations, he wouldn’t give a definite answer. So even without any detailed explanation, just that one word was enough.“By the way...” Ivan suddenly thought of something, his eyes lighting up with a teasing glint. “Was it because of that kiss the other night?”A cold glare shot his way.But Ivan just laughed even harder. “What’s the big deal? We’re all adults here. It was just a kiss. You don’t have to be so uptight about it!”He leaned in with a mischievous grin. “But seriously... under those circumstances, you still managed to stop at just a kiss? Are you sure you’re... fully functional?”As he spoke, Ivan deliberately gave William a once-over, grinning wickedly.“Are you looking to die toda

Hearing this, Layla agreed. “All right. Please go ahead and give him my contact information.”“Got it!”*At that moment, Xavier was on the phone, proudly reporting his success.“How about it? I came through for you, didn’t I? I got your girl trending at the top of the hot search list!“Spending thirty million for a good cause and earning a huge favor from you—this is hands down the best money I’ve ever spent!”Listening to the smug laughter on the other end of the line, William remained quiet for a few seconds before giving a flat reply. “Good job.”Xavier immediately felt frustrated. “That’s it? Nothing else?”“Yeah.”Standing by the tall window, sunlight in his eyes, William asked casually, “Has Zion come after you again?”“It’s been two days since he last contacted me. But now that the news is out today, you can bet he’s not going to leave me alone.”Xavier sighed heavily. “I sacrificed a lot for your woman, you know. If I end up traumatized from all this, yo

“The first time I watched the promotional video, I was blown away by the scenery. The second time, I realized there was a deeper meaning. Layla Xander filmed those children who had been left behind, showing their everyday lives. She clearly wanted to draw attention to their reality!” “I grew up as a left-behind kid myself. I know exactly how hard it is. Thank you, Miss Xander, for letting people see them! From now on, if anyone dares to bash her, I'll be the first to stand up and fight back!” “If it weren't for how beautifully she shot the promotional video, YT Corporation would never have noticed the town or the children. Layla truly did something incredible.” “Beauty, kindness, and talent—Layla Xander is the full package!” At the top of the trending page, an account called “LittleDianaHere” (who claimed to be a local) shared another piece of information:“Miss Xander is personally sponsoring every child who appeared in the promotional video, covering their education all

“Mr. Zion, Mr. Lucien is getting impatient...” the secretary reminded him quietly.Zion snapped back to attention, scowling. “Fine. Let’s go.”When they arrived outside the CEO’s office, Zion knocked lightly on the door. A sharp, furious voice came from inside.“Get in here!”Zion hurriedly pushed the door open. “Lucien, what happened? Who got you so worked up?”“You mean you still don't know?”Lucien’s temper flared even hotter. He slammed his palm against the desk several times, making the whole table shake.“I told you to get in touch with Xavier Taylor. Did you handle it?”Zion panicked. “I... I'm still working on it. His side keeps giving excuses, saying he's too busy lately. I didn’t want to bother him...”“Busy?”Lucien waved him closer with an icy smile. “Come here.
