Chapter 395

Author: Eli Sole
“I heard from Wilson,” Ivan said. “Mrs. Harris Sr. and Mr. Lucas Sr. both blew up when William didn’t show last night. Word is, Mr. Lucas Sr. has people out searching the whole city for him.

“If they find out he got into an accident while…”

He trailed off mid-sentence, but Layla didn’t need him to finish. She was smart and she already knew what he meant.

“This has to do with me. I can’t avoid that,” she said quietly.

“If the Lucas or Harris families want to come after me, let them.”

Her eyes never left William.

Right now, the only thing she cared about was seeing him open his eyes—and asking him why he would risk his life just to block that car.

But the truth couldn’t stay hidden for long.

The news of William’s accident inevitably broke.

At the Lucas family estate, Mr. Lucas Sr. shot to his feet. “What? You’re telling me William got into a car accident last night?”

“Yes, sir,” the assistant said, head lowered.

“Mr. Ivan Dixon had the story locked down. We only manag

By the time Mr. and Mrs. Lucas Sr. arrived at the hospital, Levi had already been alerted and rushed to the inpatient wing to meet them.As soon as he stepped off the elevator, a sharp slap rang out down the hallway. It was immediately followed by Scarlett’s shrill, out-of-control voice.“It’s you, isn’t it? You brought this on him! You’re a curse—anyone who gets close to you ends up ruined! Can’t you just stay away from William?“Layla Xander, how far are you planning to drag him down before you’re satisfied? He’s my only son! If anything happens to him, I swear I’ll take you with me!”By the time she reached the end, Scarlett had broken down completely, sobbing hysterically as she shoved Layla aside and stormed into the hospital room.Mr. Lucas Sr. followed behind her without sparing Layla a single glance.Layla stood frozen in place, a bright red slap mark across her cheek but her face remained eerily calm, like the sting hadn’t even registered. The whole thing happened so f

Scarlett shot to her feet and stormed toward the door, ready to confront Layla—only to be stopped by Ivan, who rushed in just in time.“Aunt Scarlett, where are you going? William hasn’t even woken up yet. You should be with him.”“Move!” she shouted, shoving at him with all her strength. But Ivan held firm, refusing to budge.“Please, calm down,” he said urgently. “William’s condition isn’t critical. Once he wakes up, we can get the full story. But right now, we can’t blame Miss Xander.”Scarlett was furious. “You’re still defending her? Are you trying to get William killed too?”“No!” Ivan was growing desperate. “I’m just stating the facts. This crash was anything but normal. Miss Xander had no idea it was coming. She’s the one who brought William to the hospital. She stayed up all night with him!“She was the one who asked me to suppress the news. Because of that, we avoided a PR nightmare. She’s done everything she could to help. She doesn’t deserve to be treated like this

At the Harris estate, the moment Gwen heard that William had been in a car accident, she shot to her feet.“I have to go see him!”Mrs. Harris Sr. grabbed her hand, frowning. “What’s the rush? Didn’t the Lucases say he’s not seriously hurt?”Gwen pressed her lips together. “But Grandma, the only reason William didn’t show up last night was because of the accident. Are you still angry with him?”“And that accident happened a little too conveniently, don’t you think?” Mrs. Harris Sr. snapped.“Grandma! You can’t just assume things like that. Do you really think William would risk his life just to get out of an engagement?”Seeing Gwen’s tone shift, Mrs. Harris Sr. frowned. “Look at you—raising your voice to me over this boy.”“I just think it’s unfair,” Gwen said quietly.“You’re letting your feelings cloud your judgment.”Mrs. Harris Sr. gave her a pointed look. “I asked their man for details about the accident and he couldn’t give me a straight answer. He didn’t ev

“That accident felt way too convenient,” Wilson said, narrowing his eyes at Ivan. “What really happened?”Given how worked up Wilson had been earlier, Ivan knew he couldn’t keep him in the dark any longer. He gave him a look and motioned toward the window, away from the bedroom door.Keeping his voice low, Ivan spoke cautiously, always watching the door out of the corner of his eye. When he finished explaining everything, Wilson was visibly stunned. “Someone was trying to hurt Miss Xander?”“Yeah. The driver’s still in the ICU. No idea when he’ll wake up.”Ivan’s brows drew together, his expression tight. “I read the report from the scene. For the impact to be that severe, the other car had to be going fast and with all that traffic on the overpass…“If William hadn’t swerved to block it, it could’ve caused a multi-car pile-up. And if Layla had been the one brought to the hospital instead, her injuries might’ve been a lot worse.”“Wait… are you saying—” Wilson’s face went

“Don’t tell her I’m awake. And don’t let her come to the hospital,” William said quietly.Ivan frowned. “Why not? She’s been running herself ragged for you. She even made me promise to notify her the moment you woke up…”“Not until I know whether this accident had anything to do with me,” William cut in, his voice calm and unreadable. What Ivan didn’t know was that William had been awake for a while—long enough to overhear the full story Ivan shared about the car crash.Layla had just returned to the country. She couldn’t possibly have made any enemies dangerous enough to try and kill her.And yet the timing of the crash was too perfect. It happened the same night the two families were supposed to meet.Whoever orchestrated it clearly wanted to use Layla to throw him off and keep him from showing up.William’s eyes darkened. “I’ll have someone keep an eye on her—discreetly.”Ivan hesitated. “But… won’t she be really hurt by this?”“Will she?” William closed his eyes slow

Wilson stood frozen in place, letting out a long, frustrated sigh. “What kind of messed-up fate is this?”*Ever since leaving the hospital that day, Layla had been waiting at home for news from Ivan.By early Monday morning, she couldn’t help herself. She sent him a message asking about William’s condition. Before she got a reply, the doorbell rang. She got up to answer it and was immediately met with an enormous bouquet of flowers, followed by Hannah’s grinning face.Layla blinked in surprise. “Hannah? How did you even get my address?”“I was planning to stop by your studio today to check out the photos and maybe drag you out for lunch.” Hannah stepped inside, holding the bouquet. “But when I asked around, I found out you hadn’t been to work at all. Not only that—you pushed back your entire week’s schedule.“So, I asked your assistant for your address and came straight here. First time visiting, figured I’d bring a little housewarming gift.”She handed over the flow

Hannah finally spoke after a long pause. “Layla, I want to start my own fashion magazine. And I want you to be the lead photographer. What do you think?“I’ve got connections in the entertainment industry. You've got the talent and the name. With the two of us working together, there’s no way this magazine fails.“If we do this right, we could turn it into one of the top fashion magazines in the country. People would be lining up just to get a cover.“It’s the fastest way to turn your skills into money. Like a money tree...”“Hannah.”Layla gently cut her off, her gaze suddenly more serious. “That all sounds great. And I do remember you used to talk about starting your own fashion magazine. But have you forgotten what you said back then?”Back then, Hannah had deliberately gotten close to her because she wanted to convince her to start a fashion magazine together. But at the time, Layla was still studying under Jenny, with a lot left to learn. Hannah, too, was immersed in

Before Layla could respond, Hannah picked up her bag and walked out.As she stepped out of the elevator, Hannah got a call. Her tone was clearly irritated. “Didn’t I tell you to wait for my update?”“She still hasn’t agreed?” The voice on the other end sounded displeased.“It’s almost settled. I already brought it up with her. Once she reviews the launch proposal, she’ll get back to me.”Hannah rubbed her temple with one hand, frustrated. “Don’t rush me. You’ll hear something soon.”“Fine. I’ll give you a bit more time.”The call abruptly ended.Hannah lowered her phone and muttered under her breath, annoyed, “So damn pushy.”*A whole day passed, and Layla still hadn’t heard back from Ivan. At dawn, she made up her mind to head to the hospital. But just as she was about to enter the main doors, several bodyguards suddenly rushed out and blocked her path. Then came Scarlett’s voice, “What are you doing at the hospital?”“I’m here to see Mr. Lucas.”Layla turned to find Sc

After hanging up the phone, Layla returned to the couch.Carter looked up curiously.“Who was that, Sis?”“The service center,” Layla replied with a hint of frustration.“They said one of my car’s parts is damaged and needs to be ordered from the manufacturer. It'll take about two weeks before I can get the car back.”She frowned slightly.“It’s strange. The car was working just fine when I dropped it off. How could a part suddenly be broken?”“Totally normal,” Carter said casually, pulling out his phone. “Some issues only show up during inspection.”As he spoke, he started typing quickly. “Perfect timing! I’ll text Uncle William and ask him to pick you up after work today. No need for you to take a cab.”“I can drive her—” Seth offered.“No need,” Carter cut in without even looking up.“They live together. No point in bothering Director Mason.”After a moment, Carter looked back up with a grin.“Uncle William said yes!”Layla said nothing. Instead, she just looked at him

Little by little, Layla found herself drawn in, her thoughts swept along by Seth’s rhythm as she unconsciously stepped into his world.Seth might look laid-back and a little rough around the edges, but the moment he started talking about film, he became sharp, articulate, and deeply professional. As a director, he had the ability to oversee everything on set — exactly the kind of big-picture thinking Layla was still learning to master. His arrival, she had to admit, couldn’t have come at a better time. Before she realized it, admiration quietly bloomed in her heart. She had to give him credit. Seth Mason’s billion-dollar box office success wasn’t luck. He had truly earned it.“Director Mason, I—” she began. But a knock at the door cut her off.Layla gave a small, apologetic smile, then turned toward the door.“Come in.”A moment later, a head poked through the doorway. It was Carter, grinning ear to ear.“Hey, Sis! You’ve got company, huh…?”As his eyes landed on Seth, Carte

“Pretty good,” Layla said seriously after thinking it over for a moment. “But it would've been even better if he wasn’t quite so enthusiastic.”Seth really was a little too friendly, pushing past the social distance Layla was used to.If he had been a complete stranger, she probably would have thought he was some kind of weirdo. But since he was Zeppelin’s grandson, that connection naturally made him feel a little more familiar, a little easier to trust.“Maybe that’s just the way he is,” Layla said with a small smile. “It’s actually pretty rare for someone in their thirties to keep that kind of pure, genuine enthusiasm.“When it comes to relationships, you have to be willing to take the first step or nothing ever happens. Besides, if you’re still timid at this age, you’ll never get anywhere.”Because the evening had been so relaxed and pleasant, Layla was completely at ease, speaking whatever came to mind without filtering herself. But William, sitting silently beside h

“No need,” a deep voice interrupted.Through the curtain of rain, William approached, holding an umbrella over his head, his tone low and firm as he declined Seth’s offer.Layla blinked in surprise. “Mr. Lucas? What are you doing here?”“It’s getting late. I came to pick you up,” William said, casting a brief glance at Seth. “And this is...?”Seth grinned brightly. “Seth Mason. You can just call me Seth.”“Mm,” William replied with barely a nod, clearly uninterested in getting familiar with someone he had no real reason to care about.Seth didn’t mind his coldness at all. Smiling easily, he turned back to Layla. “Since Mr. Lucas is here to pick you up, I can relax! But we didn’t get to finish our conversation. I’ll swing by your studio tomorrow and we can talk more.”Layla nodded with a smile. “Sounds good. I’ll be waiting.”Watching the two of them agree so cheerfully, a faint chill settled between William’s brows.Layla said a few polite goodbyes to Zeppelin,

Zeppelin let out a cough, shooting Seth a warning look, signaling him not to scare Layla off.Only then did Seth pull himself together. “Sorry, Miss Xander,” he said sheepishly. “I got a little too excited. I didn’t scare you, did I?”Layla shook her head gently. “Receiving Director Mason’s praise is an honor for me.”“No, no — meeting you is my honor!” Seth grinned brightly, clearly struggling to contain his enthusiasm.Layla couldn’t help feeling a little unsettled. Why did it feel like Seth was staring at her the way a hunter looked at his prey? It was... a little unnerving.Zeppelin, unable to watch any longer, stepped in to explain. “It’s like this — Seth’s a director, and you’re a photographer. For this exhibition’s promotional film, I was hoping the two of you could work together.”“Huh?” Layla blinked in surprise. The script had already been finalized and now they were dropping a director into the project?Seth immediately picked up on her hesitat

“You make it sound like Grandpa’s not worth much. Do you really think I go around asking just anyone to be my student? I know Jenny’s always had a good eye, and if she’s her top student, she must be exceptional.”Zeppelin shot him a glare.“Besides, if you were willing to study under me, I wouldn't have to go around looking for students.”“No way! Spending my life stuck with brushes and ink? You might as well kill me now!” the young man laughed. “There's no way I could sit at a desk all day."“You’re so impatient at such a young age!” Zeppelin scolded with a huff. Then he turned back to Layla with a hint of apology. “Forgive the scene. This troublemaker is my grandson.”“I do have a name, you know!” The young man pulled off his baseball cap, flashing Layla a bright, sunny smile. “Nice to meet you! I'm Seth Mason but you can just call me Seth.”Layla froze, completely stunned.“Wait a second. Zeppelin Mason is Seth Mason’s grandfather?!” she muttered. She had neve

At the Lucas estate, Mr. Lucas Sr. stood in his study, staring absentmindedly at a landscape painting hanging on the wall.Lucien pushed the door open and walked over to his father’s side. He glanced at the painting. It was one of Zeppelin Mason’s works.Sensing that his father wasn’t speaking and that the atmosphere felt a little off, Lucien spoke cautiously. “Dad, you wanted to see me?”“I thought we should talk about the company. Since you’ve taken over, have you run into any problems?”Lucien shifted uncomfortably and hesitated before answering, “No problems...” He sneaked a look at Mr. Lucas Sr., then asked carefully, “Are you worried I can’t handle it?”“I trust your abilities,” Mr. Lucas Sr. said calmly. “It’s just that you haven’t really brought up much about the company lately, so I thought I’d check in. If anything does come up, you’d better not try to hide it from me.”He turned away from the painting and walked toward his desk, picking up his teacup and taking a sl

After leaving the nursing home, on the way to the parking lot, Scarlett kept glancing suspiciously at Layla.Catching her gaze by chance, Layla didn’t get upset. Instead, she smiled politely and asked, “Mrs. Lucas, would you like to come to the art exhibition too?”“No,” Scarlett refused flatly, turning her head away with a huff. Plenty of people invite me to gallery shows, and I haven't accepted a single one yet!”Layla glanced at William, and the two shared a knowing smile.Together, the group walked into the setting sun, their figures slowly fading into the distance.Under a nearby tree, Sean stood silently, his eyes reflecting the evening glow like tiny flames, burning holes into Layla’s retreating back.*Meanwhile, Kiera was shopping at the mall with her mother-in-law, Susan.Susan frowned at her phone. “Didn’t Sean say he was coming to have dinner with us?
