Chapter 570

Author: Eli Sole
News that Felix had stormed into the nursing home spread fast.

By the time William and Layla arrived, the entrance was a scene of chaos—complete with Layla’s own family standing there too.

Layla didn’t spare the Xander family so much as a glance. Her gaze was cold as she turned to Felix, who was still making a scene. “This isn’t the Perry family estate. If you’re going to throw a tantrum, at least make sure you’re in the right place.”

Felix spun around at the sound of her voice, so furious he actually laughed. “Perfect timing! You two—tell your damn guard dog to back off!”

Mike remained calm and unmoved. He looked to William and reported in a low voice, “Mr. Lucas, they’ve been stirring up trouble for almost an hour now. I’m guessing word has already reached Mr. Perry Sr.”

“Thanks for holding the line,” William replied quietly. He then turned toward the crowd outside and swept a cool gaze across them. “You all carry a bit of status in society, don’t you? So what are you doing caus

“The tumor in your brain is growing rapidly, and its location is quite problematic. The chances of a successful surgery are very low.“If you don’t undergo surgery, you may have less than a year left.” The doctor’s words echoed endlessly in her ears. Layla Xander stumbled out of the hospital in a daze. By the time she got into a cab, the medical report in her hand was already crumpled from her grip. Finally, it dawned on her. She needed to tell her fiancé, Sean Perry, about this. Her hands trembled uncontrollably as she pulled out her phone and typed a message with great difficulty: “Sean, come home early. I have something to tell you.” Suddenly, a loud crash jolted the car, sending it shaking violently. The impact threw her forward, her head hitting the seat in front of her. Pain shot through her skull, and her vision went black for a moment. Chaotic noises erupted all around her. Before she could process what was happening, the car door was yanked open, and

An hour later, Sean stormed in, his voice sharp and accusatory. “Layla, what nonsense are you pulling now?” His gaze quickly landed on her head, and he froze for a moment. “You’re hurt?” “Yeah.” Layla looked at Sean, her expression calm and detached. “I was in a rear-end collision yesterday and ended up in the hospital.” Guilt flickered in Sean’s eyes for a brief second before he quickly sat down beside her. “Was it serious? Is that what you wanted to talk to me about yesterday?” “Just a minor injury.” Without a word, Layla shifted slightly away from him and spoke slowly. “I’m serious about breaking off the engagement. And about the company shares—I want my portion back.” Outsiders might not know, but Sean was well aware. The Perry family had never thought much of him, a mere illegitimate child. His entrepreneurial success over the years was largely thanks to Layla’s initial funding and behind-the-scenes support. To help him project the image of a capable and

The engagement banquet went ahead as planned. Since Mr. Perry Sr. was particularly fond of Layla, the event was lavishly organized, with many prominent families and close friends in attendance. The banquet hall was brimming with glittering jewels, cheerful laughter, and a vibrant atmosphere. Sean stood at the entrance, greeting guests with a polite smile, though his heart was restless with worry. Time was ticking, and Layla still hadn’t arrived. Mr. Perry Sr. approached with a stern expression. “Did you get into another fight with Layla?” Sean quickly denied it. “No, Grandpa, don’t jump to conclusions.” “It better be true,” Mr. Perry Sr. snapped, shooting him a glare. “Layla is the granddaughter-in-law I’ve chosen. If anything goes wrong with today’s engagement banquet, you might as well not come back to the Perry family!” “Don’t worry, there won’t be any problems.” As they were speaking, Mr. Perry Sr. suddenly lit up with a smile. “Layla!” Sean followed h

“I can’t believe it! She’s actually the bride-to-be at this engagement banquet!” Carter stared at the stage in disbelief, his eyes shining with excitement. “She’s incredible! The Perry family threw this grand event, and she just destroyed it like it was nothing!“Uncle William, we really came to the right event today!” Lost in his excitement, Carter didn’t notice that William’s gaze was fixed intently on Layla. Beneath the shadows of the lights, an unreadable depth stirred in his dark eyes, emotions surging quietly but intensely. On stage, Sean strode quickly toward Layla, an awkward smile plastered across his face. He forcefully pulled her into his arm. “Apologies, everyone. Layla was just joking around, trying to liven up the atmosphere,” he said with a strained grin. “Isn’t that right, Layla?” The words were practically forced through his teeth, dripping with menace. Layla remained expressionless as her voice rang out, loud and firm. “I’m not joking.” The cr

As soon as Layla stepped out, Carter dashed over, excitement written all over his face. He stopped in front of her and blurted, “Wow, you’re way too bold! With all those people in there, you didn’t spare a shred of dignity for the Perry or Xander families!”He added, grinning, “Honestly, you should’ve slapped those two cheaters right across their faces!” “And who are you?” Layla asked, a little speechless at how overly familiar this gossip-loving young man was. “I’m… uh…” Carter scratched his head awkwardly. “I was the one driving the car that rear-ended your taxi a week ago.” “Oh…” Layla responded lazily, clearly not interested in pursuing the matter. “You—” “Carter,” William called out.Hearing the warning tone in William’s voice, Carter immediately shut up, though his eyes still sparkled with admiration as he looked at Layla. Having grown up surrounded by the fake politeness and scheming of the upper class, Carter found Layla’s fearless attitude fascinating. And

“Just doing the right thing,” Carter chimed in from the driver’s seat, casually inserting himself into the conversation. “I recognized you the moment I saw you. Uncle William heard me out and decided to help. That’s just how he is—he can’t stand owing anyone.“Am I right, Uncle William?” Carter asked.William remained silent. Taking his uncle’s silence as confirmation, Carter raised an eyebrow smugly. “They say blessings and misfortunes go hand in hand. I’ve seen it firsthand today. Sis, you might’ve been rear-ended by us, but I’d say your good fortune is just getting started!” “And now you’re acting like it’s a good thing you drive recklessly?” William’s deep voice cut in, sharp and disapproving. Carter chuckled sheepishly. “I was just trying to cheer her up. After everything she’s been through, her mood must be awful, right?” “I’m fine,” Layla said with a faint smile. “And you’re not wrong.” Blessings and misfortunes go hand in hand. She had fallen ill, but in d

“Xena is your sister, and I’m her future brother-in-law. Is it wrong for me to take care of her?” Sean’s gaze moved past Layla, landing on William. “And what about you and Mr. Lucas? What’s your relationship? Why is he helping you?” Following Sean’s line of sight, Layla saw William approaching. Dressed sharply in a tailored suit, he walked with an aura so commanding it felt as though the world bowed at his feet under the golden sunlight. Sean’s question seemed aimed at both of them. Ignoring Sean’s hostility, William strode directly to Layla’s side. “Miss Xander, is there anything I can help you with?” Layla snapped out of her thoughts. “Mr. Lucas, why are you…” “After the accident, I’ve been thinking about your injury. I won’t feel at ease until I know you’ve fully recovered,” William said, handing her a bag of breakfast. “Carter asked me to bring this to you.” Accident? Sean’s expression shifted as he recalled Layla mentioning the rear-end collision when she firs

In just one week, Layla had received all kinds of deliveries, and without exception, every single one ended up in the trash. Today’s delivery was right on schedule: a large bouquet of vibrant yellow roses in full bloom. The delivery guy struggled to carry it to her door, sweating profusely. “Hi, your delivery is here.” Before he could finish, the door opened. Layla glanced briefly at the card’s signature. “Could you please throw it in the trash downstairs?” “What?” The delivery guy was stunned. “But these flowers are beautiful.” “They take up too much space.” Layla smiled politely before closing the door. She used to treasure the two bouquets she would receive every year—one for her birthday and one for her anniversary. She would carefully dry them and save them as keepsakes. But now, with flowers arriving daily, even a single glance made her feel like she was about to develop a pollen allergy. If nothing else, this ordeal had taught her something new. Sean a

The baby in Xena’s belly was still his flesh and blood.Sean’s mind was a mess. He didn’t even know what to say. Kiera’s sudden pregnancy had caught him completely off guard.Noticing his silence, Susan’s expression darkened. “What are you just standing there for? Kiera’s pregnant, and you’re not happy? When Xena got pregnant, Felix was so thrilled he practically flew into the sky!“No, I’ve got to find a time to bring Kiera back to the Perry estate. And I’ll make sure to show her off in front of Felix too!”Speak of the devil. The doorbell rang loudly before she could even finish her sentence.Sean stood up and checked the monitor. Sure enough, Felix was outside, slamming the bell like a madman. What was Felix doing here at this hour? Before Sean could think further, Felix had already lost his patience. He kicked the front door hard several times. “Susan Jasper, get out here!”Susan rushed over, panic written all over her face. “Why’s he looking for me?”“You think just beca

A week passed before Layla heard about Kiera again. In the meantime, Hannah had officially started planning the launch of her magazine.Layla was busy juggling meetings at QS Entertainment and editing the short video for the art exhibit. Her schedule was so packed that she barely had time to think about anything else.It was by chance that Hannah found out Seth Mason had helped with the filming and editing of the video. She immediately begged Layla to introduce them. She was eager to get to know him. Layla could only agree for now, saying they would set something up once the editing was done. That morning, right after a meeting, Layla received a call from William.“Levi just got word that Kiera faked a medical report to pretend she’s pregnant.”“What?” Layla was stunned for a moment before quickly realizing what Kiera was trying to do.To Sean, Xena’s child was an illegitimate one, something that would tarnish his reputation. But Kiera’s child? That would be a legitimate Perry he

“She didn’t tell me,” Sean snapped, his voice tight with frustration. “And don’t worry about how I found out. Just do us all a favor and stop causing trouble.”“Trouble? How is this trouble?” Susan shot back, indignant. “I planned everything carefully. There’s no way Xena or her people can trace it back to me.”She lifted her chin smugly. “As long as she loses the baby, what can they use to challenge your claim to the inheritance? Sean, you should be thanking me!”“I said,” Sean ground out, his patience gone, “the baby is off limits.”Susan frowned, confused by his anger. “Why? If she actually gives birth, and the old man decides to hand the Perry estate to Felix out of happiness, it’ll be too late for regrets!”“Because that baby…”He was just about to say “is mine” when the door creaked open.Kiera stood there quietly, her expression uncertain. “Sean… Mom only did this for our sake. Don’t be so harsh on her.”“Exactly!” Susan straightened her back proudly. “Everything I’ve do

Kiera took a cab home from the hospital. Just as she stepped out of the car, a figure rushed up and grabbed her arm, making her jump.“Kiera! Where did you two go last night?”Startled, she turned around and saw Susan looking unusually excited. Kiera had a pretty good guess.“Mom, what’s going on? Did something happen?”“I…” Susan swallowed hard, her eyes flashing with venom. “Let’s go inside. We’ll talk there.”Once they were in the villa, Susan couldn’t wait to sit down before blurting out what had happened with the car accident.Kiera stared at Susan in shock. “Mom, weren’t you afraid something might go wrong?”“If something goes wrong, then so be it. That bitch Xena deserves it!”Susan scowled in disgust. “She seduced Sean in the first place, and that’s why he couldn’t take over the Perry family’s business. And now she dares stand in his way again? I’d be thrilled if she died.”The venom in Susan’s eyes made Kiera’s stomach turn. After all this time living under the same r

Kiera forced a smile, but only she knew how much she was bleeding inside.Outside the hospital, she stood at the curb, waiting for Sean to pull up. But the car never came.Instead, her phone rang.“Hey, Kiera, something urgent came up at the office. I really need to deal with it. I’m so sorry. Could you grab a cab home first? I’ll be there later tonight.”She didn’t press him. Just quietly replied, “Okay.”When the call ended, Kiera slowly lowered her phone. Even in the warm morning sun, she felt ice cold.Once again, she asked herself the question she had tried so hard to ignore, “What kind of man did I marry?”*Meanwhile, Sean didn’t go to the office. He was headed straight to North City Women’s & Children’s Hospital. He had barely gotten into his car earlier when he received a call.“Hi, is this Miss Xena Xander’s emergency contact? She’s been in a car accident. There was some bleeding. She’s stable for now, but we need someone to come down.”Without hesitation, he chose

One hour later, Sean stormed into the hospital room and rushed to Kiera’s bedside.“Kiera, are you alright? Are you hurt anywhere? I looked for you all night. I was worried sick!”Kiera’s heart felt like a cold, hollow shell, but she still forced herself to put on a frightened expression.“I drank too much last night. I think someone tried to take me to a hotel room so I ran.”She turned to Layla and added, “Luckily, I ran into Miss Xander. If not for her, I don’t know what might’ve happened.”Sean followed her gaze and gave Layla a noticeably softer look.“Layla, thank you.”The casual intimacy in his tone made Layla nauseous. She didn’t even bother responding, keeping her eyes only on Kiera.“Miss Jenkins, you really shouldn’t drink so much when you’re out,” she said flatly. “With your tolerance, it’s just asking for trouble.”Kiera nodded obediently. “I understand.”At that moment, William entered the room. He didn’t spare Sean a glance and addressed Layla with quiet conce

“Miss Xander, I really messed up. I deserved this.”Kiera’s voice cracked as tears streamed down her face. She clung tightly to Layla’s hands, trembling from head to toe.Layla remained silent, her expression unreadable. The only thing that surprised her was realizing Kiera had already known the baby in Xena’s belly belonged to Sean.If she knew all along, why wait until now?Was she still holding out hope for that man?The early morning sun spilled through the windows, bathing the room in a soft golden light.Kiera had cried herself out. Her face was pale and lifeless, her red-rimmed eyes dull and empty.Layla sat by the bed and asked quietly, “When did you find out Xena was pregnant with Sean’s child?”Kiera lowered her gaze. “I went overseas for medical treatment not long ago,” Kiera said softly. “Before I left, I didn’t feel comfortable leaving Sean home alone so I installed a hidden camera. I didn’t tell him. I was afraid he’d say I was overthinking things.“Then one day,

Maybe it’s better if you don’t involve me after all.”It had all started during a dinner party. Sean brought up the idea after a few too many drinks, and the more they talked, the wilder the plan got.Fueled by alcohol, Mr. Zimmer hadn’t thought it through before agreeing to help stage a fake cheating scandal, framing Kiera for seducing him while drunk. So tonight, he and Sean had slipped something into her wine. After just two glasses, Kiera was already disoriented. Sean handed her off to him, saying she was his to do with as he pleased.Mr. Zimmer’s lust took over, and h
