Chapter 576

Penulis: Eli Sole
“A better option?”

Xena’s face turned a shade paler.

Her father had already planned out her future as if he had fully made up his mind to sacrifice both her and the baby.

She didn’t speak. Mr. Xander took her silence as compliance or shock, assuming she just needed time to process everything. Without another word, he turned and headed upstairs.

Mrs. Xander supported Xena and quickly noticed she was trembling. Her heart ached at the sight.

“Xena, please don’t be too upset,” she said gently. “I know this feels cruel right now but it’s better than letting things spiral and ruining your reputation. That would destroy your whole life.

“One day, when you look back on this, you’ll see that we really were trying to protect you.”

As she spoke, she happened to meet Xena’s sidelong glance and her heart jolted.

Just for a moment, there was a flicker in her daughter’s tearful eyes.

A glint of cold fury.

A flash of bitter mockery.

“Mom,” Xena asked in a choked voice, “you agree with Dad t

Gwen said nothing. She simply shook her head and downed the wine in a single gulp.Olivia leaned against the bar, resting her chin on one hand as she silently watched Gwen finish one glass after another.Unbidden, Olivia’s mind wandered back to years ago, when Gwen had just started high school. It had been another quiet night, much like this one. Gwen had slipped under Olivia’s covers, whispering about the boy she liked. She had gone on and on about what William Lucas was reading, what he had done that day, and how smart, handsome, and capable he was. Her cheeks had flushed pink with admiration, and her eyes had sparkled like she was describing the center of her universe.Even though Olivia was older, she had understood. William had always been exceptional. With his looks, intellect, and talent, he was the kind of boy who could unknowingly break a dozen girls’ hearts. What Olivia hadn’t expected was for Gwen’s schoolgirl crush to take root—deep, tangled, and impossible to pull fre

Olivia walked over and set the gift bag of supplements on the table. She was just about to sit beside Mrs. Harris Sr. when she heard a soft voice call out, “Aunt Olivia.”She turned, finally noticing the redness around Gwen’s eyes. “Oh no, sweetheart, what happened? Why are you crying?”Mrs. Harris Sr. scoffed. “Now you care? I thought you didn’t have a heart.”“Mom,” Olivia whined playfully as she looped an arm through her mother’s, “you gave birth to me. If anyone should know whether I’ve got a heart, it’s you.”“Don’t start with me.”Mrs. Harris sr. grumbled but didn’t pull away.Olivia glanced back at Gwen, concern flashing in her eyes. “When did you get back?”“Beginning of the year.” Gwen hesitated, then added, “Aunt Olivia, why didn’t you tell us you were coming back? My brother could’ve picked you up from the airport.”“No need. Wilson’s busy enough already. I wouldn’t want to bother him.”What she didn’t say was that she had gone straight to meet Seth the moment she l

“Is it really that big of a deal? It’s just a photographer. With your name, Director Mason, can’t you get anyone you want?”The woman was in her forties, still stunning, with elegant eyes that sparkled with amusement. She was alluring, but never over the top.“You don’t get it.”Seth’s eyes gleamed. “She might just become my official photographer. No one else compares to her.”That only piqued her curiosity. “I heard this Layla Xander isn’t even thirty yet. You really think someone that young is up to the task?”Seth had already grossed over ten billion at the box office, and yet he had never named a personal photographer before. Everyone in the industry knew he was still searching for someone who truly matched his vision. Most assumed it would be a seasoned veteran. Who would have thought the one he had his eye on was a girl in her twenties?“Art has never been about age. Plenty of young talents rise fast, and just as many old ones never amount to much.”He raised an eyebrow.

Online, there wasn’t so much as a ripple. But offline? It was on fire. The digital silence had been part of the plan all along. It was a deliberate smokescreen. After all, who would have guessed that in this day and age, with print media on the decline, someone would pour everything they had into offline promotion?Scarlett blinked as she took it all in, then muttered thoughtfully, “Layla’s… actually pretty impressive.”*At that moment, Layla and Hannah were sitting together, watching the growing online buzz. They exchanged a glance and smiled, a mix of relief and disbelief in their eyes.“We did it, Layla,” Hannah whispered, gripping Layla’s hand. Her fingers trembled slightly.“I have to be honest. When you first laid out the plan, I thought about saying no.“But I kept telling myself, I’m your teammate. If I can’t trust you completely, who else will? So I stayed quiet.“And now I’m really glad I did. So, so glad.”Her voice caught at the end. Layla saw the shimmer of t

The screen was filled with glowing reviews from readers—endless praise and a flurry of confused curiosity.“I was just walking past a newsstand when this magazine caught my eye! That sleek, high-end cover stood out so much among the usual papers and tabloids. No way you’d miss it.”“Wait, the lead photographer is Layla Xander? The legendary Begonia? She used to shoot exclusively for aristocrats and A-list celebrities overseas. How is there no buzz about this release today?”“What year is this? Who even does only offline marketing anymore? I heard all the major distributors got advance copies on consignment. That’s a serious gamble.”As the discussion heated up, someone inevitably brought up how both QS Entertainment and the Layla Studio had posted launch announcements earlier in the day, only for them to disappear shortly after.“Is this some kind of blacklisting? There’s no way a name like Layla Studio would get zero media coverage otherwise.”“Didn’t Layla Studio just do that s

“She’s using you, and you still don’t see it? Layla’s just trying to drag you down with her, thinking it’ll help her dodge Mr. Lucas Sr.’s suppression.”“I don’t care what her motives are!”Scarlett was already furious, and hearing Gwen admit it only made her angrier.“Gwen, I always thought you were thoughtful and sensible. I thought you understood me. I was very clear with you that night, wasn’t I?“But what happened? You didn’t listen at all. You turned around and sided with Mr. Lucas Sr. to sabotage me. I’m honestly so disappointed in you.”“Mrs. Lucas, you’ve been manipulated by Layla. She—”“I may be old, but I’m not senile!”Scarlett snapped, cutting Gwen off sharply. She turned her blazing gaze to Mr. Lucas Sr.“And you! You humiliated me! The husbands of all those women who joined the shoot were so proud, they ordered tens of thousands of copies to give out to clients and staff.“They were proud their wives got featured. And you? You buried the entire release, like it

“I only borrowed your authority, Mr. Lucas Sr.,” Gwen Harris said with a polite smile, calm and composed. “It was your influence that made it possible.”“You’re being far too modest!” Mr. Lucas Sr. waved his hand, clearly pleased with himself. “That magazine’s launch barely made a ripple. Sooner or later, Scarlett will realize Layla was just using her. Roping her in for that photoshoot was all part of the trap.“She’s obsessed with saving face. After inviting all those socialites to take part, only to have it flop? She’s bound to feel humiliated. And when that happens, she’ll turn all that anger on Layla. Then I’ll just step in, offer her a few sweet words, and she’ll come running back.”He stroked his chin, smiling smugly. “I even had a custom set of green gemstone jewelry made for her. I’ll give it to her once she comes home.”“You really do care about her,” Gwen said with a trace of envy in her eyes. “I’ve always admired the love you two share. I hope I can be as lucky one day—t

Steven had never seen Hannah like this.“You gonna hit me again?” Her voice was hoarse as she glanced at his raised hand. “If you're gonna hit me, make it count. Best case, kill me. Otherwise, that magazine’s going to print in a month.”“Hannah!” Nancy cried out, panicked. “How can you talk to your father like that?”“Then how should I talk to him?” Hannah let out a bitter chuckle, completely ignoring the blood still seeping from her wound. “Should I get on my knees and beg for permission to publish the magazine?“If I give in, will you say yes?”She answered her own question. “Of course not. You’ll just repeat the same thing. Girls should be obedient, do what’s best for the family, marry well, support their brothers, and never cause trouble.“If I already know how it ends, what’s the point in groveling?”She wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth and stared straight at Steven. “I didn’t use a dime of company money. This magazine is funded by private investors and my own s

Compared to the harmony on Layla’s end, things were far more chaotic at Hannah’s house. She had just gotten home from work and barely stepped inside when an ashtray came flying out of nowhere, shattering at her feet. Glass shards sliced across her ankle, and blood instantly welled up.Her father, Steven, shouted furiously from across the room. “Hannah Stone, are you trying to take the entire Stone family down with you? You’ve really outdone yourself! Going behind our backs to challenge the Lucases—have you completely lost your mind?“I’m telling you right now, that ridiculous magazine of yours is not going to print. I don’t care what excuse you come up with, you go apologize to Mrs. Lucas. You wasted their time!”Hannah lowered her eyes to the cut on her ankle. Her expression was unusually calm, as if she had known this was coming. The moment they decided on the feature for their debut issue, she had anticipated that Mr. Lucas Sr. would eventually pressure the Stones.
