The air inside the newsroom of The Daily Chronicle smelled of stale coffee, lukewarm takeout, and over-worked air conditioners. It was 9:14 PM on a rainy Tuesday, and the floor was nearly deserted. Most of the junior reporters had packed up hours ago, but Isabella Reed remained glued to her desk, her eyes burning under the hum of fluorescent lights.

On her dual monitors were two open windows: an official corporate org chart for Hayes Global Enterprises, and a drafted exposé titled The Cost of Silence: Land Seizures in Lower Cook County.

For six months, Isabella had been hunting Richard Hayes.

He was the ghost at the top of Chicago’s financial food chain. A billionaire who rarely granted interviews, never attended public galas without a battalion of security, and possessed enough political capital to smooth over every scandal his multi-billion-dollar real estate conglomerate created.

Her desk phone buzzed, startling her out of her concentration. She ignored it, letting it go to voicemail, and took a sip of lukewarm black coffee.

"You're going to give yourself an ulcer before you turn twenty-seven, Issy."

Isabella turned. Maya Lin, the newsroom’s lead digital technician and Isabella’s closest friend, was leaning against the cubicle partition, twirling a USB drive around her finger.

"I’m close, Maya," Isabella said, rubbing her temples. "The shell companies buying up the residential properties along the river—they all trace back to a entity registered in Delaware called Apex Holdings. And Apex’s sole beneficiary is managed by Hayes Global’s legal department."

"Which means Richard Hayes signed off on displacing three hundred low-income families," Maya sighed, stepping into the cubicle. "Isabella, we know he’s a shark. Everyone knows he’s a shark. But his legal team eats journalists for breakfast. If you run this story without a smoking gun connecting Hayes directly to the signatures, the editor-in-chief will spike it. You know Mr. Henderson won't go toe-to-toe with Hayes’s lawyers."

"I don't need a smoking gun," Isabella muttered, pulling up another spreadsheet. "I just need one internal memo proving he knew."

"Well, maybe your guardian angel delivered," Maya said, her tone suddenly shifting from teasing to cautious. She reached into her jacket pocket and slid a thick, dark brown Manila envelope onto Isabella’s desk.

Isabella stared down at it. "What’s this?"

"Courier dropped it off at the security desk downstairs ten minutes ago," Maya replied. "No return address. No recipient name—just your desk number written in heavy black marker. The night guard scanned it. No wire, no powder, just paper."

Isabella’s chest tightened with a sudden spike of adrenaline. Whistleblowers in high-stakes corporate investigations were rare, but when they appeared, they usually brought fire.

"Did you catch the courier?" Isabella asked, grabbing a metal letter opener from her desk drawer.

"Paid in cash, wore a motorcycle helmet, left before security could ask for ID," Maya said, resting her hands on the back of Isabella’s chair. "Open it."

Isabella slid the steel tip under the heavy wax seal of the envelope and sliced it open. Inside was a thick, black leather folder with no markings. She pulled it out, her pulse drumming in her ears.

She opened the leather cover, expecting financial spreadsheets, offshore tax documents, or internal corporate emails detailing land acquisitions.

Instead, the top document was printed on heavy, watermarked paper from Genetics & Forensics Institute of Illinois.

Stamped across the top in red ink was a single word: CONFIDENTIAL.

"What is that?" Maya asked, leaning closer. "Medical records?"

Isabella’s eyes scanned the top header.

Subject A: Hayes, Richard E.

Subject B: Reed, Isabella M.

Sample Type: Buccal Swab / Comparative STR Analysis.

Isabella’s throat went bone-dry. "This... this isn't corporate data."

"What do you mean?"

Isabella’s fingers trembled slightly as she turned to the second page of the report. The text was filled with technical jargon—locus markers, allele values, probability calculations—matching DNA profiles. But her eyes bypassed the scientific tables and locked onto the summary paragraph at the bottom of the page:

CONCLUSION:

Based on the DNA profiles generated from the submitted specimens, the probability of paternity is 99.98%. Subject A (Richard E. Hayes) cannot be excluded as the biological father of Subject B (Isabella M. Reed).

The room seemed to tilt. The distant hum of the newsroom air conditioner faded into a muffled roar.

"Isabella?" Maya’s voice sounded far away. "Hey, what does it say? You look like you just saw a ghost."

Isabella couldn't speak. She stared at her own name printed on the paper alongside the name of the man she had spent six months trying to bring down.

Richard Hayes.

Her mind raced backward, crashing against twenty-six years of memories. She remembered her mother, Elena Reed, working twelve-hour shifts at a small diner in West Chicago, her hands cracked from harsh dish soap, her eyes carrying a quiet, unyielding sadness. She remembered asking about her father when she was seven years old, only for her mother to softly kiss her forehead and say, “Your father was a man who chose his path, Issy. We chose ours.”

Elena had died four years ago of aggressive ovarian cancer, taking the identity of Isabella’s father with her to the grave. Isabella had always assumed he was some college mistake—a man who ran at the first sight of responsibility.

He wasn't a mistake. He was one of the most powerful billionaires in the country.

"Maya," Isabella whispered, her voice barely audible. "Look at this."

Maya bent down, her eyes scanning the bold conclusion line. She gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth. "Jesus... Isabella. Is this... is this real?"

"I don't know," Isabella said, her mind spinning out of control. "It can't be. Someone is playing a sick prank on me. Someone inside Hayes Global found out I was investigating them and they’re trying to mess with my head—"

"No one fabricates a certified forensic lab report just to throw off a story," Maya interrupted, pointing at the bottom corner of the document. "Look at the official notary stamp. Look at the bar code. That’s an authentic state laboratory verification."

Isabella slid the paper back into the folder, her breath coming in quick, shallow hitches. Anger, betrayal, and profound confusion collided inside her chest.

If this report was real, then Richard Hayes had abandoned her mother to live in relative poverty while he built a multi-billion-dollar corporate dynasty. He lived in a gated mansion in Lake Forest; her mother had died in a crowded county hospital ward.

Before she could process the thought, the landline phone on her desk rang again.

The sharp ring shattered the silence of the empty newsroom.

Isabella stared at the flashing red light on the receiver. She didn't want to answer it, but her hand moved automatically. She picked up the receiver and brought it to her ear.

"Isabella Reed," she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

"Miss Reed," a deep, polished voice came through the line. The tone was completely calm, smooth as silk, and dripping with controlled authority. "My name is Nathan Cole. I am the Senior Managing Counsel for Hayes Global Enterprises."

Isabella’s hand tightened around the receiver until her knuckles turned white. She glanced at the Manila envelope sitting on her desk.

"Mr. Cole," Isabella forced her voice to remain cold and professional. "If you're calling about my Freedom of Information Act requests regarding the Cook County developments, you can speak to our legal department."

"I am not calling about your land acquisition story, Miss Reed," Nathan Cole replied smoothly. "I am calling about the envelope you opened approximately three minutes ago."

Isabella felt a cold drop of sweat trace down her spine. "You sent it?"

"I delivered it via private courier," Nathan said. "Mr. Hayes instructed me to deliver those findings to you personally once the forensic verification was finalized."

"Why?" Isabella’s voice cracked slightly, but she instantly recovered, her posture stiffening. "Why now? After twenty-six years?"

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. When Nathan spoke again, his tone was low and measured.

"Because Mr. Hayes does not have much time left, Miss Reed. And he wants to see you. Tonight."

Isabella gripped the edge of her desk, her heart pounding violently against her ribs. "And if I say no? If I publish this report along with my investigation and tear his company apart?"

"You could certainly try," Nathan replied, his voice unbothered, yet carrying an underlying edge of steel. "But I think you’d prefer to hear the truth about your mother directly from the man who loved her—before his wife finds out you exist."

Isabella caught her breath. "His wife?"

"Victoria Hayes is aware that an investigation is underway," Nathan said quietly. "If she realizes what that folder contains before you step into Mr. Hayes's office, your career—and your life—will become exceedingly complicated. There is a black sedan waiting for you at the corner of Randolph and Wells. I suggest you get in."

The line went dead.

Isabella lowered the phone slowly, the silence of the newsroom swallowing her whole. She looked down at the brown Manila envelope, then up at Maya, who was watching her with wide, terrified eyes.

"Isabella..." Maya whispered. "What did he say?"

Isabella closed the leather folder, pulled it close to her chest, and grabbed her coat off her chair.

"He said my father is waiting for me," Isabella said softly, her eyes hard as granite. "And it's time I got some answers.”
