Isabella’s thumb froze against the glass screen of her phone.

I know who you really are, Miss Reed. Get out before you die like your mother.

The letters burned into her retinas. Her blood turned to ice water, but twenty-six years of survival on the West Side kept her expression completely neutral. She calmly locked her phone screen, slid it back into her jacket pocket, and raised her hazel eyes to meet Julian Hayes’s smirking gaze.

"Is something wrong, Miss Reed?" Julian asked, leaning back against the marble reception desk, swirling a cup of espresso. "You look like you've just received bad news. Did your little indie blog get its funding pulled?"

"It’s The Daily Chronicle, Mr. Hayes," Isabella said, her voice dropping into a level, dangerous calm. She took two steps toward him, closing the distance until she was invading his personal space. "And if you spent half as much time reviewing the Cook County zoning regulations as you do reading my credentials, your legal department wouldn't be drowning in three class-action lawsuits this morning."

Julian’s arrogant grin faltered. His posture straightened, his blue eyes flashing with sudden irritation. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me," Isabella said smoothly, pulling a crisp leather notepad from her satchel. "The Apex Holdings acquisition was signed off under your division’s authority last quarter. The press is already tracking the displaced tenant permits. My job as your 'PR consultant' isn't to look pretty—it's to make sure your incompetence doesn't tank the company's stock before lunch."

Julian stared at her, his jaw tightening so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He set his espresso cup down on the marble counter with a sharp, heavy click.

"You have a big mouth for an outsider," Julian sneered, stepping closer, his height intended to intimidate her. "I don't know what kind of leverage you used on my father to get this contract, but let me make one thing clear: this is *my* company. My mother and I run this floor. You are a temp with a fancy title. One wrong move, and I will personally throw you out of this building."

"That won't be necessary, Julian."

The quiet, authoritative voice cut through the tension like a blade.

Nathan Cole walked down the mahogany-paneled hallway, a black leather briefcase in one hand and a stack of confidential files in the other. He wore a navy three-piece suit today, looking every bit the ruthless legal strategist who controlled the top floor. His grey eyes swept over Julian with icy indifference before settling on Isabella.

"Nathan," Julian spat, turning his frustration toward the attorney. "What is this? Since when does my father hire external consultants without board approval?"

"Since the board gave him full executive authority over corporate crisis management three years ago," Nathan replied smoothly, stopping beside Isabella. His shoulder subtly brushed against hers, a silent wall of support that didn't go unnoticed. "Miss Reed’s contract was executed personally by Mr. Hayes at six this morning. Her security clearance is Grade Alpha—reporting directly to the CEO's office."

Julian’s face flushed a mottled red. "Grade Alpha? That gives her access to the executive database!"

"Which she will need to manage the media fallout from your land acquisition," Nathan said, his voice flat and unyielding. "Now, if you’ll excuse us, Julian, the executive committee is waiting for your Q3 presentation in Boardroom B. I suggest you review page fourteen—your projected revenue figures are missing three key tax disclosures."

Julian glared at Nathan, then turned a searing, hatred-filled look toward Isabella. "This isn't over," he whispered under his breath before snatching his espresso and storming down the corridor toward the boardroom.

---

Nathan watched him leave until the glass doors clicked shut. The moment Julian was out of earshot, Nathan turned to Isabella, his eyes instantly searching her face.

"Are you alright?" he asked softly, his professional mask slipping just enough to reveal genuine concern. "He's an arrogant fool, but he can be dangerous when his ego is bruised."

"Julian isn't the problem," Isabella murmured.

She reached into her pocket, pulled out her phone, unlocked the screen, and handed it to Nathan.

Nathan took the device, his brows furrowing as he read the encrypted text message. As his eyes scanned the words—Get out before you die like your mother—Isabella saw a dark, terrifying shift come over his expression. The cool, controlled lawyer vanished, replaced by a cold, predatory anger.

"When did this arrive?" Nathan demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper.

"Thirty seconds before Julian opened his mouth," Isabella said. "It came from a burner account with end-to-end encryption. Whoever sent it knew I was arriving on the executive floor today."

Nathan walked her quickly down the private corridor, unlocking a heavy frosted-glass door at the corner of the floor. He ushered her inside, closed the door behind them, and engaged the electronic privacy lock. The glass instantly transitioned from translucent to fully opaque.

The room was a breathtaking corner office overlooking the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. It was furnished with a dark walnut desk, plush charcoal leather chairs, and a sleek computer workstation.

Nathan didn't look at the view. He walked straight to her desk, took out a small handheld device from his pocket, and swept it across the undersides of the desk, the lamps, and the landline phone.

"Checking for bugs?" Isabella asked, watching him closely.

"Standard protocol," Nathan said, the device chiming green. "The room is clean. But the text proves one thing: someone inside this building knows who you are. And they are terrified."

"Who could it be?" Isabella leaned against the edge of the desk, crossing her arms to hide the faint tremor in her hands. "Victoria? Julian? Or someone in security?"

"Victoria doesn't send clumsy threats from encrypted numbers," Nathan said, setting her phone back on the desk. He stepped closer to her, his shadow falling over her. Up close, Isabella could smell his cologne—sandalwood and crisp winter rain—and feel the steady, grounded heat radiating off him. "Victoria operates with legal dropped-hammers and quiet executions. This feels more desperate. Someone who stands to lose everything if your mother's true connection to Richard comes to light."

Isabella looked up into his storm-grey eyes. The intensity in his gaze made her breath catch in her throat.

"I’m not scared, Nathan," she said, her voice stronger than she felt. "I’ve spent my whole life being threatened by dirty politicians and slum lords. A text message isn't going to make me run."

A slow, breathless quiet settled between them. Nathan reached out, his long fingers hesitating for a fraction of a second before gently tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. His knuckles brushed against her cheekbone, warm and electric against her skin.

"I know you're not scared, Isabella," he murmured, his voice thick with a sudden, raw emotion that startled them both. "You're the bravest woman I've ever met. But you're in a pit of vipers now. And I won't let them hurt you."

Isabella’s heart hammered against her ribs, but it wasn't from fear. The tension between them was palpable, pulled tight like a bowstring. For a heartbeat, she thought he was going to kiss her right there in the shadow of the executive office.

Nathan pulled his hand back slowly, clearing his throat as he recovered his professional composure, though his eyes remained dark with unexpressed feeling.

"Your terminal is configured," Nathan said, gesturing toward the sleek workstation on the desk. "Your login credentials give you access to the historical financial archives from twenty years ago. Start with the offshore wire transfers tagged under 'Project Apex.' That's where Victoria hid the settlement payouts."

"And where will you be?" Isabella asked.

"In the boardroom, keeping Julian and Victoria occupied," Nathan said, picking up his briefcase. "My office is right next door through the connecting interior door. If you need anything—anything at all—you hit the speed dial on that landline. It goes directly to my cell."

He walked to the door, paused with his hand on the handle, and looked back at her. "Be careful, Isabella."

---

Once Nathan left, Isabella sat down in the leather executive chair and took a deep breath. She pressed her thumb against the biometric reader on the desktop monitor.

The system chimed smoothly: WELCOME, ISABELLA REED. CLEARANCE LEVEL: ALPHA.

Her fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with practiced speed. She bypassed the standard PR folder templates and plunged straight into the encrypted corporate directory.

She opened the financial archives from twenty-six years ago—the year she was born.

The files were massive, thousands of scanned ledgers, board minutes, and legal releases. But Isabella was a trained investigative reporter. She knew how to filter for anomaly signatures: untagged accounts, sudden capital disbursements, and non-disclosure agreements signed under shell company names.

After ninety minutes of intense searching, she hit a wall. A specific file folder labeled 1998-SPECIAL SETTLEMENTS / REED was highlighted in red.

When she clicked it, a security prompt flashed across the screen:

RESTRICTED ACCESS:

FILE LOCKED BY EXECUTIVE COUNSEL ORDER.

SECONDARY PASSPHRASE REQUIRED FROM USER: V. HAYES.

Isabella’s breath hitched. Victoria had personally encrypted her mother’s file.

Before she could attempt a workaround using Maya’s remote software, the heavy interior door of her office softly unlatched.

Isabella snapped her laptop screen down slightly, her hand darting to her satchel as she turned toward the door.

Standing in the doorway was Victoria Hayes.

She looked breathtakingly elegant in an ivory cashmere suit, holding two porcelain coffee cups in her manicured hands. A warm, beautiful, completely terrifying smile sat on her lips.

"Good morning, Isabella," Victoria said smoothly, stepping into the room and letting the door click shut behind her. "I thought it was time we had a proper chat... daughter.”

He’s been orchestrating Richard’s isolation from the inside."Nathan stood beside her, his jaw set in a tight line as his fingers flew across the keyboard, pulling up the secondary corporate registries for Vance Medical Logistics."Vance didn't want Julian running Hayes Global because Julian is an incompetent hothead," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register. "And he didn't want Victoria in charge because she’s too sharp to share power. He wanted you, Isabella. He voted to hand you controlling interest because he assumed a twenty-six-year-old investigative journalist would be overwhelmed, malleable, and completely reliant on a senior board veteran to run the company.""He

The static on the phone screen sizzled against the cold Chicago rain before the display went completely black. Isabella stood frozen on the sidewalk of North Wacker Drive, the freezing water soaking through her blazer, her thumb still pressing against the lifeless glass of her phone. Poisoning him. The words echoed inside her head like a siren. Richard wasn't just fading away in a private clinic—Victoria was actively extinguishing him, using synthetic beta-blockers to mimic a terminal stroke and secure her total proxy vote. "Isabella." Nathan’s voice was close, sharp and clear against the roar of downtown traffic. He took her arm, his grip firm and steady, pulling her out of the open downpour and under the concrete overhang of a nearby office building. "Did you hear him?" Isabella whispered, her hazel eyes wide with shock. "They’re killing him, Nathan. She’s killing her own husband." "I heard," Nathan said, his face carved from dark marble, his grey eyes flashing with absolute
