Isabella slipped behind the dark wooden frame of the silk screen just as the heavy brass latch clicked open. She pressed her back against the woven fabric, holding her breath, her hand clamped tight over her mouth to muffle the sound of her rapid breathing.

Victoria stepped into the room. The sharp, mechanical click of her heels against the hardwood border sounded like a countdown.

"Nathan?" Victoria’s voice was smooth, but laced with immediate suspicion. "I thought you were leaving. Why is the east wing security log showing a door override?"

Nathan didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. "I was double-checking the medical power of attorney clauses in Mr. Hayes’s file, Victoria. The digital keycard scanner on the side entrance malfunctioned—I had the guard manually override it."

"Did you?" Victoria walked further into the room. Isabella could see her sharp silhouette through the semi-translucent silk panel, barely three feet away. Victoria smelled of expensive white floral perfume and cold winter air. "And who were you talking to, Richard? I heard voices down the corridor."

Richard let out a raspy, irritated cough. "I was arguing with my lawyer, Victoria. A privilege I still retain, unless you’ve taken that away from me as well."

"Don't be dramatic, Richard," Victoria said coolly. Her shadow turned, her eyes sweeping over the quiet room. She paused, her gaze settling on the hearth—where two damp, muddy footprints from Isabella’s boots sat drying on the Persian rug.

Isabella’s chest locked. Her heart slammed against her ribs.

Nathan noticed the footprints a split second later. Without breaking stride, he casually took a step forward, placing his polished leather shoe directly over the clearest boot print, his broad shoulders subtly blocking Victoria's line of sight toward the screen.

"If you're concerned about his resting schedule, Mrs. Hayes," Nathan said, his tone perfectly calibrated—deferential, yet firm—"I can wrap this up in the morning at the office."

Victoria stayed silent for three agonizing seconds. Isabella felt sweat prickling the back of her neck.

"See that you do," Victoria finally said, her voice dropping into a quiet threat. "Julian is presenting his Q3 expansion plan to the executive committee at nine sharp tomorrow. I want the legal team fully aligned behind him. Richard's health is... unpredictable. The market needs to see stability."

"Of course," Nathan replied.

Victoria turned on her heel, her silk dress rustling as she walked out. The heavy door shut with a magnetic click.

---

For ten seconds, no one moved. The heart monitor’s steady *beep... beep... beep* was the only sound in the suffocating silence.

"She's gone," Nathan said softly.

Isabella stepped out from behind the silk screen, her knees weak. She looked at Nathan, who was standing over the damp footprint on the rug, his grey eyes fixed on her with intense focus.

"You're fast on your feet," she murmured, her voice slightly shaky.

"In my line of work, Miss Reed, a two-second delay gets you ruined," Nathan replied, stepping back and straightening his cuffs.

Richard sank deeper into his leather chair, looking visibly drained. His face was unnaturally pale, his breathing labored as the oxygen machine hissed softly.

"She knows something is wrong," Richard rasped, looking up at Isabella with desperate eyes. "She can feel the ground shifting. Isabella... listen to me. You cannot fight her from the outside. If you publish your investigation now, her media team will spin it as a tabloid hit job. They will destroy your reputation, blackball you from every news organization in the country, and bury the Apex Holdings files forever."

"And what do you propose?" Isabella asked, crossing her arms tightly. "I just walk into Hayes Global and pretend I'm your long-lost daughter? The moment I claim those shares, Victoria’s lawyers will tie me up in litigation for the next decade."

"No," Nathan interjected, leaning against the edge of Richard’s desk. "We don't announce your parentage yet. We use a trojan horse."

Isabella looked between the two men. "A trojan horse?"

"The public relations disaster surrounding the Lower Cook County developments is leaking into the financial press," Nathan explained. "The board is nervous. Tomorrow morning, Richard will execute an executive order appointing you as Senior Corporate Communications Advisor on an emergency six-month contract."

"As an advisor, you will have unrestricted access to our internal servers, executive emails, financial ledgers, and board meetings," Richard added, his hazel eyes glowing with a sudden flare of authority. "You will be inside the fortress. You can find the proof you need to stop the Cook County land grabs, and you can uncover the paper trail Victoria used to destroy your mother."

Isabella stared at them. "You want me to work for the company I’ve spent six months trying to dismantle?"

"I want you to take what is rightfully yours," Richard said, his voice dropping into a fierce whisper. "I lost twenty-six years with you, Isabella. I cannot fix the past. But I can give you the weapon you need to finish this fight."

Isabella stood frozen in the middle of the room. Every ethical boundary she had built as a journalist screamed at her to turn around, walk out that door, and never look back. But as she looked at Richard—a dying man consumed by regret—and then at Nathan, whose watchful grey eyes seemed to read her very soul, she knew there was no going back.

"Two conditions," Isabella said, her voice dropping into a hard, uncompromising edge.

Nathan raised an eyebrow. "Name them."

"First, I don't stop my investigation into Apex Holdings. If I find evidence that implicates this company in illegal activity, I bring it to light. Second... I don't answer to Victoria, and I don't answer to her son."

A small, approving smile tugged at the corner of Nathan’s lips. "You will answer only to Richard. And to me."

---

The ride back to downtown Chicago was silent for the first twenty minutes. Rain continued to lash against the tinted glass of the Maybach as it sped along the dark highway.

Isabella sat in the back, her head resting against the cool windowpane, watching the distant lights of the city skyline grow closer. The reality of what she had agreed to was beginning to set in.

"You're quiet," Nathan said from across the aisle, his laptop open on his lap, the soft white glow illuminating the sharp angles of his face.

"I'm trying to figure out if I just signed a contract with the devil," Isabella murmured without turning her head.

"Richard isn't the devil, Miss Reed," Nathan said softly. "He's a man who made terrible mistakes when he was young and powerful. The real devils are the ones sitting on the seventy-floor executive board."

Isabella turned to face him. "And where do you fit into all of this, Mr. Cole? You're Victoria’s chief legal counsel, yet you're helping her husband undermine her. If she discovers what you're doing, your career is over."

Nathan closed his laptop with a quiet snap. He looked at her, his storm-cloud grey eyes surprisingly intense in the dim interior of the car.

"My father was Richard’s original business partner thirty years ago," Nathan said, his voice flat, devoid of self-pity. "When Victoria’s family bought into Hayes Global, they forced my father out through a series of fraudulent share dilutions. He died broke and broken-hearted five years later."

Isabella felt a sudden pang of recognition. "So you're not just doing this out of loyalty to Richard. You want revenge."

"I want justice," Nathan corrected calmly. "Just like you. Victoria Hayes thinks she owns this city. She thinks people are disposable assets to be bought, sold, or erased. I’ve spent six years working my way into the heart of her legal empire, waiting for the right moment to dismantle it piece by piece."

He leaned closer, his voice dropping into a low, intimate murmur that sent a strange flutter through Isabella’s chest.

"And you, Isabella... you are the missing piece."

---

At 8:45 AM the following morning, the sun broke through the gray Chicago clouds, casting a sharp light across the 70-story glass tower of Hayes Global Enterprises.

Isabella stood in the center of the soaring marble lobby, clad in a crisp dark navy suit, her hair pulled back into a sleek tail, her leather satchel slung firmly over her shoulder. Around her, hundreds of corporate employees in expensive attire hurried past, holding coffees and tablets, utterly oblivious to the storm about to hit their world.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was a text from Maya:

*[Are you really doing this? I have the police department on speed dial. Please tell me you haven't been brainwashed by the suit.]*

Isabella typed a quick reply: *[I'm inside. Keep your eyes on the Cook County registry. If anything updates, let me know.]*

She tucked the phone away and stepped toward the private executive elevator bank. She slid the silver security pass Nathan had delivered to her apartment at dawn through the scanner.

The reader chimed green: ACCESS GRANTED — EXECUTIVE LEVEL.

The doors glided open, and Isabella stepped inside, her heart hammering against her ribs like a drum. The elevator shot upward, the floors counting down on the digital display: 10... 30... 50... 70.

When the doors slid open on the executive floor, the atmosphere was dead silent. Deep mahogany walls, floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the Chicago river, and quiet plush carpeting greeted her.

Standing directly in front of the elevator doors, leaning against a marble reception desk with a smug, arrogant smile on his face, was a young man in his mid-twenties. He had slicked-back dark hair, cold blue eyes, and wore an Italian tailored suit that cost more than Isabella’s annual salary at the newsroom.

Julian Hayes.

"So," Julian said, his eyes scanning Isabella from head to toe with brazen condescension. "You're the new PR consultant my father dragged out of the gutter to fix our image."

Before Isabella could respond, her phone buzzed again with an incoming text notification.

She glided her thumb across the screen, keeping her face completely impassive in front of Julian.

The message was from an unknown, encrypted number:

[I know who you really are, Miss Reed. Get out before you die like your mother.]

He wasn't wearing his suit jacket—just his charcoal vest, white dress shirt with rolled-up sleeves, and his dark tie loosened at the collar.Parked at the curb, idling silently in the yellow light, was a matte-black executive Maybach. The rear door opened. Isabella stepped out onto the pavement. She had shed her formal executive blazer, wearing a simple cream silk blouse and black tailored trousers, her dark hair now falling loosely over her shoulders. She looked exhausted, her hazel eyes framed by faint shadows, but the fierce, unshakeable poise that had broken Marcus Vance on international television remained entirely intact.Nathan walked up to her, stopping just inches away. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The roar of down

The heavy brass doors of the executive elevator closed behind the police officers and Nathan, leaving the seventieth floor drowning in a suffocating silence.Marcus Vance picked up his white coffee cup from the desk, took a slow, deliberate sip, and set it back down. He adjusted his silk tie in the reflection of the dark glass windows, radiating the smug, absolute confidence of a man who believed he had just delivered checkmate."You have two hours until the opening bell, Isabella," Vance said smoothly, walking toward the private foyer. "I suggest you use them to prepare your statement for the press conference. I'll have the corporate legal team draft my Vice Chairman confirmation papers. We can sign them right after we address the media."Isabella didn't answer. She stood behind the rosewood table, her chin high, her hazel eyes tracking him with cold, unyielding precision until the elevator doors slid shut, carrying him away. The moment she was alone, Isabella moved. She sprinted acr

"He didn't just vote with us in the boardroom to push Victoria out. He’s been orchestrating Richard’s isolation from the inside."Nathan stood beside her, his jaw set in a tight line as his fingers flew across the keyboard, pulling up the secondary corporate registries for Vance Medical Logistics."Vance didn't want Julian running Hayes Global because Julian is an incompetent hothead," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register. "And he didn't want Victoria in charge because she’s too sharp to share power. He wanted you, Isabella. He voted to hand you controlling interest because he assumed a twenty-six-year-old investigative journalist would be overwhelmed, malleable, and completely reliant on a senior board veteran to run the company.""He

The sound of fine crystal shattering against rosewood echoed through the dead silence of the seventieth-floor boardroom.Champagne pooled across the dark wood, reflecting the sharp white lights of the high-definition display screens. Julian stood frozen behind the podium, his mouth slightly open, his hand still suspended in mid-air where his glass had been a heartbeat prior.Beside him, Victoria didn't drop her glass. Her hand tightened around the stem with such violent force that her knuckles turned translucent. The soft, sorrowful widow’s mask she had worn for the television cameras dissolved, replaced by a dark, terrifying stillness."Security," Julian finally choked out, his voice cracking before deepening into a panicked rage. The roar of the rain outside seemed to deaden, replaced by the hollow, metallic ringing in Isabella’s ears.Richard was dead. She had spent her entire life resenting him, holding his ghost accountable for her mother’s solitary struggles in West Chicago. But now, staring at the television screen where Victoria was putting on a performance of tearful widowhood, a sudden, sharp ache blossomed in Isabella’s chest. He had tried. In his last moments, trapped in a sterile cage, he had fought through his failing breath to place the crown in her hands."Isabella."Nathan’s hands were on her shoulders, turning her gently away from the screen. His thumb brushed over her cheek, wiping away a stray raindrop mixed with a tear she hadn't realized she’d shed. His storm-grey eyes were intense, burning with an unshakeable, fierce conviction."Don't give her this moment," Nathan said, his voice low and commanding, cutting through the fog in her mind. The static on the phone screen sizzled against the cold Chicago rain before the display went completely black. Isabella stood frozen on the sidewalk of North Wacker Drive, the freezing water soaking through her blazer, her thumb still pressing against the lifeless glass of her phone. Poisoning him. The words echoed inside her head like a siren. Richard wasn't just fading away in a private clinic—Victoria was actively extinguishing him, using synthetic beta-blockers to mimic a terminal stroke and secure her total proxy vote. "Isabella." Nathan’s voice was close, sharp and clear against the roar of downtown traffic. He took her arm, his grip firm and steady, pulling her out of the open downpour and under the concrete overhang of a nearby office building. "Did you hear him?" Isabella whispered, her hazel eyes wide with shock. "They’re killing him, Nathan. She’s killing her own husband." "I heard," Nathan said, his face carved from dark marble, his grey eyes flashing with absolute
