The word hung in the air, heavy and lethal, vibrating against the soundproof walls of the executive office.

Daughter.

Isabella didn't flinch. She stood beside her desk, her posture straight, her hazel eyes locked onto Victoria Hayes with the steady, unblinking focus of an investigator who refused to be broken.

Victoria smiled, a slow, predatory curving of her crimson-painted lips. She glided into the room, setting one of the delicate porcelain coffee cups onto the edge of Isabella’s desk. The subtle click of fine china on polished walnut sounded like a hammer cocking.

"You look so much like her," Victoria said softly, her tone conversational, almost tender. "It’s quite startling, really. The same stubborn line of the jaw. The same defiant tilt of the chin. Elena always did have a terrible habit of standing too tall in rooms where she didn't belong."

Isabella’s throat tightened, but she kept her voice smooth and devoid of emotion. "You knew who I was before I even stepped into the building."

"My dear girl, I have known who you were since the day you took your first breath in a charity ward in West Chicago," Victoria replied, walking slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the river. She folded her arms, her mink coat draped over her shoulders like regal armor. "Do you truly think a woman of my standing wouldn't keep tabs on her husband’s little side mistakes?"

"My mother was not a mistake," Isabella said, her voice dropping an octave, cold and razor-sharp. "She was an honest woman. Something this family clearly knows nothing about."

Victoria turned around, her laugh light and melodious, though her blue eyes remained as icy as a glacial shelf.

"Honest?" Victoria echoed, stepping closer until she was barely two feet away. "Elena Reed died broke, exhausted, and forgotten. Is that what you call honesty? She gave up everything because she lacked the stomach for real power. And now you walk in here, wearing a off-the-rack navy suit, thinking you’re going to play the righteous crusader?"

"I’m here to do my job, Mrs. Hayes," Isabella said, leaning slightly forward, refusing to cede an inch of ground. "My contract was signed by the Chief Executive Officer. Unless you have the legal authority to override Richard’s executive command, I suggest you take your coffee and leave my office."

Victoria’s smile faded, replaced by a dark, calculated stillness. The air in the room temperature seemed to plunge.

"Richard is a dying old fool clinging to ghosts," Victoria whispered, her voice laced with venom. "He thinks bringing you into this building is some tragic, poetic act of redemption. But let me make one thing abundantly clear to you, Isabella. Hayes Global is *my* legacy. My father’s capital built this tower. My connections secured its contracts. My son will inherit its throne."

She reached out, her manicured fingers gently straightening the collar of Isabella’s blazer. The gesture was deceptively soft, but the threat behind it was absolute.

"A clever girl would take a quiet settlement, pack her bags, and buy a nice little newspaper in the countryside," Victoria murmured. "A foolish girl stays in Chicago and discovers how quickly an accident can happen on a wet highway. Don't be a foolish girl, Isabella. You don't have your mother’s luck."

"Is that a promise, Mrs. Hayes?" Isabella asked, her heart thumping heavily against her ribs, though her face remained an unreadable mask.

"It’s a advisory forecast," Victoria replied smoothly, pulling her hand back and picking up her coffee cup. "Welcome to Hayes Global, Miss Reed. I do hope you enjoy the view. The drop from the seventieth floor is steep."

With a final, elegant nod, Victoria turned on her heel and glided out of the room, leaving the heavy oak door open behind her.

---

The moment the door closed, Isabella let out a slow, shaky breath. Her hands were trembling slightly, not from fear, but from the sheer volume of rage coursing through her veins.

Victoria didn't just know who she was—she was monitoring her. She had been monitoring her whole life.

The interior door connecting to the adjacent office swung open, and Nathan stepped through. His suit jacket was off, his tie slightly loosened, and his grey eyes were dark with suppressed fury. He had clearly been listening from the other side.

"She’s testing you," Nathan said, his voice deep and urgent as he closed the distance between them. "She wanted to see if she could rattle you into resigning before the market opens."

"She didn't rattle me," Isabella said, turning back to her computer screen, her fingers already flying across the keys to resume her search. "She confirmed everything Richard told me. She’s terrified of what happens if the truth about Elena gets out."

Nathan stood over her desk, watching her work with an intense, admiring focus. "You handled her better than most seasoned executives on this floor. But you need to understand something, Isabella. Victoria isn't just threatening you verbally. She’s already moving pieces on the board."

"What do you mean?" Isabella looked up, frowning.

Nathan leaned over her shoulder, reaching down to tap a series of keys on her terminal. His chest brushed lightly against her upper arm, his clean, woodsy scent wrapping around her senses, momentarily distracting her from the screen.

"While Victoria was in here playing mind games," Nathan explained, his voice low in her ear, "Julian filed an emergency motion with the board of directors. He’s calling for an impromptu executive vote at ten o'clock."

"A vote for what?"

"To fast-track the final funding approval for the Apex Holdings land acquisition in Lower Cook County," Nathan said, pointing to a flagged item on the internal board calendar. "If the board approves the funding, the legal title transfers automatically to Hayes Global, and the demolition notices go out to those families tomorrow morning."

Isabella felt a cold knot form in her stomach. "That's why she came in here. She was keeping me occupied so I wouldn't see the calendar update."

"Exactly," Nathan said, straightening up and looking down at her. "Julian’s presentation is designed to present the acquisition as a done deal. If Richard were healthy, he’d veto it immediately. But Richard is currently in transit to a private medical facility for testing, and Victoria holds his proxy vote for the next two hours."

Isabella stood up so fast her leather chair rolled back into the desk. "We have to stop that vote."

"We can't stop the vote from the outside," Nathan said, his grey eyes gleaming with a sudden, dangerous light. "The board members only care about two things: risk exposure and stock value. If we want to kill that motion, we have to walk into that boardroom and give them a reason to vote against Julian."

"Walk into the boardroom?" Isabella stared at him. "Julian and Victoria control that floor. They'll have security remove me the second I open my mouth."

"Not if you're standing next to the Senior Managing Counsel," Nathan replied, a slow, lethal smile touching his lips. "And not if you have the one document Julian forgot to scrub from the Apex archive."

Isabella’s eyes narrowed. "What document?"

Nathan pulled a slim silver flash drive from his vest pocket and set it on the desk between them. "The original environmental impact report for the riverfront properties. The one that proves Apex Holdings knew the soil was contaminated with industrial runoff before they forced those families off their land."

Isabella looked from the flash drive up to Nathan’s face. "You hid this?"

"I’ve been waiting for the right moment to burn Julian’s division," Nathan said quietly. "If this report hits the board table, the liability exposure will terrify the independent directors. The vote will fail instantly. But I can't present it, Isabella. As legal counsel, I can only advise on legal risks. You're the Senior Communications Advisor. You're the one who has to tell them what happens to the stock price when the press gets hold of it."

Isabella felt a rush of pure adrenaline surge through her body. This was why she was here. Not to hide in a glass office, but to fight.

"Give me the drive," she said firmly.

Nathan handed her the flash drive. His fingers brushed against hers, lingering for a second longer than necessary. His gaze was intense, holding hers with an unshakeable belief that sent warmth radiating through her chest.

"They're going to throw everything they have at you in that room, Isabella," Nathan warned softly. "Victoria will try to destroy your credibility. Julian will try to shout you down."

"Let them try," Isabella said, plugging the flash drive into her satchel. "I’ve dealt with corrupt politicians my entire career. A room full of men in expensive suits doesn't scare me."

Before Nathan could answer, Isabella’s personal cell phone buzzed violently against the desk.

She picked it up, expecting another text from Maya. Instead, the screen displayed a push notification from The Daily Chronicle’s breaking news app:

BREAKING NEWS:

Independent Reporter Isabella Reed Suspended Pending Internal Investigation Into Alleged Corporate Espionage.

Isabella gasped, her blood running cold as she stared at the headline.

She tapped the notification. Attached to the news release was a leaked internal memo from her own editor, Mr. Henderson, stating that an anonymous source had provided evidence showing Isabella was receiving unauthorized payments from a private corporate entity while investigating Hayes Global.

Nathan leaned over, his eyes scanning the headline. His jaw hardened into stone.

"Victoria," Isabella whispered, her voice shaking with disbelief. "She didn't just report me to my editor. She destroyed my press credentials before I could even step into the boardroom."

The digital clock on the office wall chimed softly.

9:55 AM. Five minutes until the board meeting.

Nathan grabbed her wrist, his voice sharp and decisive. "She wants you to panic. She wants you to walk away. Are you going to let her?"

Isabella looked down at her suspended press credential on her phone, then up at the silver flash drive in her hand. Her shock burned away, replaced by a white-hot, unstoppable resolve.

"No," Isabella said, her eyes blazing with fire. "I’m going to make her regret it.”

"I suggest you use them to prepare your statement for the press conference. I'll have the corporate legal team draft my Vice Chairman confirmation papers. We can sign them right after we address the media."Isabella didn't answer. He’s been orchestrating Richard’s isolation from the inside."Nathan stood beside her, his jaw set in a tight line as his fingers flew across the keyboard, pulling up the secondary corporate registries for Vance Medical Logistics."Vance didn't want Julian running Hayes Global because Julian is an incompetent hothead," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register. "And he didn't want Victoria in charge because she’s too sharp to share power. He wanted you, Isabella. He voted to hand you controlling interest because he assumed a twenty-six-year-old investigative journalist would be overwhelmed, malleable, and completely reliant on a senior board veteran to run the company.""He

The static on the phone screen sizzled against the cold Chicago rain before the display went completely black. Isabella stood frozen on the sidewalk of North Wacker Drive, the freezing water soaking through her blazer, her thumb still pressing against the lifeless glass of her phone. Poisoning him. The words echoed inside her head like a siren. Richard wasn't just fading away in a private clinic—Victoria was actively extinguishing him, using synthetic beta-blockers to mimic a terminal stroke and secure her total proxy vote. "Isabella." Nathan’s voice was close, sharp and clear against the roar of downtown traffic. He took her arm, his grip firm and steady, pulling her out of the open downpour and under the concrete overhang of a nearby office building. "Did you hear him?"
