The Warehouse

Evelyn stared at the message until the words blurred.

Come to the old warehouse alone.

And don't tell your husband.

Her heart pounded.

The old warehouse.

She knew exactly where it was.

Her father had owned several properties before his death, but there was one abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city that he had always refused to sell.

She had never understood why.

Now, suddenly, it seemed important.

“Who is it?” Adrian asked.

Evelyn quickly locked her phone.

“No one.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Evelyn.”

She forced herself to remain calm.

“The police called. That's all.”

He stared at her.

“You're lying.”

“I just said I don't want to talk about it.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“You're holding your phone like you're afraid I'll see it.”

“Maybe because you keep taking things from me.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“My privacy. My choices. Three years of my life.”

“I'm trying to protect you.”

“And I'm tired of being protected.”

She walked past him.

“Where are you going?”

“To bed.”

“Evelyn.”

She didn't stop.

“I need time to think.”

She climbed the stairs, feeling Adrian's eyes following her.

But she didn't go to bed.

The moment she entered her room, she locked the door.

She pulled out her phone again.

The message was still there.

Whoever had sent it knew about her father.

They knew about the warehouse.

And they knew Adrian was keeping secrets.

Evelyn looked toward the clock.

12:36 a.m.

The meeting was scheduled for one.

She couldn't wait until morning.

If someone truly knew what had happened to her father, this might be her only chance to learn the truth.

She changed into a dark coat, slipped her phone into her pocket, and quietly opened the bedroom door.

The hallway was empty.

She walked downstairs.

But just as she reached the front door, a voice came from behind her.

“Where are you going?”

Evelyn froze.

Adrian stood at the bottom of the stairs.

His tie was gone, his sleeves rolled up, and his expression was unreadable.

“I couldn't sleep.”

“So you decided to leave the house?”

“I need some air.”

“At one in the morning?”

“Yes.”

He walked toward her.

“Where?”

“Just driving around.”

“I'll come with you.”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Adrian stopped.

“Why?”

“Because I need to be alone.”

He studied her face.

Something in his expression told her he didn't believe her.

“You're hiding something.”

“So are you.”

Silence.

Evelyn reached for the door.

Adrian caught her wrist.

She looked down at his hand.

He immediately released her.

“Don't go,” he said.

His voice was softer now.

“Please.”

She looked at him.

For a moment, she almost told him everything.

Almost.

Then she remembered the message.

Don't tell your husband.

“I'll be back.”

She walked out.

Adrian remained by the door.

He watched her car disappear into the darkness.

Then he took out his phone.

“Find her.”

A man's voice answered.

“We're already trying.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“She's going to the warehouse.”

There was silence on the other end.

“How do you know?”

“Because whoever sent that message knows exactly how to manipulate her.”

He looked toward the empty driveway.

“Get there before she does.”

---

The warehouse looked exactly as Evelyn remembered.

Old.

Abandoned.

Surrounded by weeds and rusted metal fences.

She parked outside and stepped out of the car.

The night was unusually quiet.

She checked her phone.

1:03 a.m.

No new messages.

She walked toward the entrance.

The large metal door was slightly open.

Evelyn pushed it.

It creaked loudly.

“Hello?”

Nothing.

She stepped inside.

Her flashlight illuminated rows of old equipment covered in dust.

“I'm here.”

A faint sound came from somewhere behind her.

Evelyn turned quickly.

Nothing.

She swallowed.

“Who sent me the messages?”

Still nothing.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“Your father knew the truth.”

Evelyn froze.

“Who are you?”

A man stepped into the light.

He was older, probably in his fifties, with tired eyes and a scar running along his jaw.

Evelyn stared at him.

She didn't recognize him.

“My name is Victor Hale.”

She frowned.

“Are you my father's business partner?”

Victor gave a bitter smile.

“He never told you about me?”

“No.”

“He wanted to keep you away from everything.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“What did my father steal?”

Victor's expression changed.

“He didn't steal anything.”

“Then why did someone say he did?”

“Because they needed him to look guilty.”

“Who?”

Victor looked around nervously.

“The people who killed him.”

Evelyn's breath caught.

“You said his death wasn't an accident.”

“It wasn't.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

Victor reached inside his coat.

Evelyn tensed.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

“Your father discovered financial records connecting several powerful people.”

“Who?”

Victor handed her the drive.

“Your father's company was being used to move money.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“Money for what?”

Victor hesitated.

“Political corruption. Bribery. Fraud.”

She shook her head.

“My father would never—”

“He didn't.”

Victor looked directly at her.

“He discovered it and tried to expose them.”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“Then why was he killed?”

“Because he found out who was behind it.”

“Who?”

Victor opened his mouth.

A loud noise came from outside.

He suddenly went pale.

“They found us.”

“Who?”

“Run.”

Evelyn turned toward the entrance.

Several shadows moved behind the frosted windows.

Victor grabbed her arm.

“There's another exit.”

They hurried through the warehouse.

“Who are they?”

“People who don't want you to know the truth.”

A loud bang echoed through the building.

Evelyn screamed.

Victor pulled her behind a stack of crates.

“Stay here.”

He moved toward a narrow door.

Before he could reach it, the door burst open.

Two men entered.

Victor immediately stepped back.

“Evelyn, run!”

She turned.

One of the men grabbed Victor.

Evelyn ran.

She reached the back door and pushed it open.

Cold air hit her face.

She sprinted toward her car.

But before she reached it, headlights suddenly appeared.

A black SUV stopped directly in front of her.

The driver's door opened.

Evelyn froze.

Adrian stepped out.

His face was furious.

“Evelyn!”

She backed away.

“How did you find me?”

He walked toward her.

“You lied to me.”

“So did you.”

“Get in the car.”

“No.”

“Evelyn, now.”

She shook her head.

“Not until you tell me the truth.”

Adrian stopped.

Behind him, another vehicle suddenly appeared.

His expression changed.

“Get down!”

He rushed toward her.

A loud crack split the night.

Evelyn screamed as Adrian pulled her against him.

Something struck the car behind them.

Adrian held her tightly.

“Don't move.”

She could hear his heart pounding.

Then he whispered against her hair.

“I told you someone was watching you.”

Evelyn looked up at him.

“And now they're coming for both of us.”
