The two men sat across from each other in a brightly lit meeting room. William stayed silent, while John briefly glanced through a list that Sam had passed to him earlier on. A knock sounded, and Sam came in, along with William’s attorney.
“Shall we start?” William asked, as his attorney sat next to him and opened his laptop.
John placed his papers face down, leaned forward, and peered into William’s eyes.
Rebecca slowly opened her eyes and found herself in the hospital emergency room. She must have dozed off after being put on the nebulizer. She sat up and almost let out a yelp when she saw John standing next to her bed, his arms crossed. Nearby, a few nurses were admiring John's behind. “John! You scared me.” “You scared me even more. What the heck were you thinking, going out without your inhaler? You were lucky I had a set in my car.” John sat n
Jolene panted for air. Things were not going the way she’d planned. She removed her hoodie, revealing her sweat-stained face, and unzipped her jacket. Standing in the alleyway a few blocks down from Rebecca’s apartment, Jolene warily scanned her surroundings before dumping her jacket into a nearby dumpster. She pushed up her glasses, smoothed her hair, and straightened her black blouse before she stepped out of the shadows and hailed a cab, all the while carrying a backpack.A yellow cab halted in no time and Jolene slipped in like a cat.
Rebecca swung her legs happily back and forth as she sat on the clinic bed. She’d just received a message from William, asking how she was. His message was short, but the words warmed her heart. Oh, how she yearned to see him again! She thought of replying but held back. He was probably busy, and she didn’t want to appear too readily available.Maybe I’ll call him later to see how he is, she thought, as the nurse prepared to jab her with a tetanus shot.
Rebecca was back at her office, scrolling through old uploaded media reports about an attempted murder by Jolene Knowles two years ago. She had gone by a different name back then, but the mug shot couldn’t lie.Rebecca’s colleagues had been extremely resourceful in pulling up several old reports in their e-library, and it did not take long for Rebecca to find this particular piece of news. She wondered how Jolene had managed to secure a place at the prestigious Silverman Corp after having been diagnosed as mentally unstable.
Rebecca jumped out of the cab and made a beeline for the entrance to the Silverman Tower. Dozens of reporters were camped outside, waiting for the CEO of Silverman Corp to make an announcement. The main suspect had been apprehended, the evidence was solid, and practically everyone witnessed Jolene Knowles screaming like a madwoman as she was hauled off into the police car.She had shrieked, “William loves only me! They deserved to die!”There was no doubt sh
In the darkened interrogation room, a knock came at the door, and an officer came in to hand John a new folder. It was the forensics report on Irana Long. John took his time to read through it and study the photos of a battered-looking Irana. Then, he gently spread the photos in front of Jolene Knowles.“You’ve confessed to killing Diana Walker and Suzanne Lee. It won’t make your sentence lighter by not confessing to this last crime.”
John let out a frustrated groan; there was no answer.Dammit. Where is she?He called Rebecca’s office next — only to find out that she’d gone to the Silverman Tower. A phone call to his colleague stationed at the Silverman Tower confirmed that Rebecca was meeting William Silverman at the penthouse.
“Becca!” John exclaimed in relief when the elevator door slid open. He had been worried sick about her safety. Seeing her standing in front of him in one piece was the best thing that happened to him that day. John grabbed her hands and yanked a confused Rebecca out of the elevator. “John!” Rebecca laughed. “Shouldn’t you be at the station?”
