I walk into the dining room to see Monica struggling to fix the flower arrangement on the table. I take a deep breath as I approach her, and her eyes meet mine, but she quickly looks at the flowers. We haven’t spoken in a few days. She finally understood her part in my life; she is only my wife on paper. I know she doesn’t like it, and she wants more than that. She even promised to make me fall for her. I don’t know how she can think I will ever fall for her.

“Can I help?” I ask, and Monica nods as I take the flowers from her hands and try my best to arrange them in the vase. Monica gives me instructions, and the frustration in her tone makes me want to throw these flowers against a fucking wall and walk away.

“Your parents will be here in twenty minutes. Is that what you’ll be wearing?” Monica asks, and I frown as I look at my clothes and nod. “Seems like you don’t even make an effort anymore,” she says, spinning on her wheelchair and leaving the dining room. I move
