Azalea’s Pov
“Who the hell are you?” His forehead folded in angry frustration.
While he moved towards me, my eyes weighed the options between making it to the door before he reached me or screaming. Unfortunately for him, his hand, which was still entangled with the IV wires, dragged the infusion pole forward and knocked the wheels off the floor. He wasn't fast enough as he tried to catch it, so it landed on the man's face and his eyes shot open.
“Mrs Dante?” Gerald's voice called from the entrance of the door before he walked in. At the same time, the man rose from the bed and fixated his intimidating eyes on me.
His orbs were a greenish shade of brown, but there was something very unusual about them that made me forget the situation I was in for a moment to focus solely on them even when they darkened and his forehead wrinkled.
“Mr Dante! Holy moly!” Gerald's voice echoed in my head as he rushed to the bed to assist the man up.
“Uncle Dan!” I whipped my head around in time to see a little girl run into the room and straight into the man's arms, almost knocking him back to the bed.
“Brother! Mama, he's awake!” Larissa, the woman who introduced herself to me, entered as well.
The room was full before I even realized it and the man that had caused the commotion was already standing close to him. If they called him Dante, then he is my husband and a miracle has just unfolded before my eyes after three years of him being in a vegetative state. I slowly started exiting the door and I felt his eyes follow me as I slipped out of the room first.
What can I say? If that man is my husband, Dante Drummond, then I would have to run for my dear life because even in his weakest point, he represented danger and savageness.
Thirty-six minutes later, I stood on the staircase and took deep calming breaths to soothe my inner turmoil before joining the party surrounding the dining room. The whole family was present, both the extended families that I hadn't met yet and they all were all over Dante, who looked around the room as if he was searching for something he must've missed.
“I was so afraid, son. I let your cousin, Morris, take over management of your company and other private businesses while you were away. I also married a wife for you…”
“You what?” I finally heard him speak, more of a rumble.
I flinched subconsciously so that my bangles jangled and all eyes were suddenly on me. I started walking awkwardly down the stairs under their scrutinizing watch. Emma waved me to sit beside her,, and I sat down just opposite Dant,e, whose gaze accessed every inch of my body and flamed up my cheeks.
“I can't marry her! She's not my type!” Dante gruntled, his eyes still locked in mine.
“You haven't even known her yet and you're concluding?” Emma said in my defence, taking my hand in a gentle squeeze.
“I don't care to know her.”
“You should because I have already signed a contract that binds all your assets to her and if she's leaving, she's going to take the lion's share of your property. How about that?” Emma said curtly.
“You didn't!” Dante's fist landed on the dining table, sending water and juice sputtering all over the table and cutleries bouncing off plates.
“Brother, this could be for the best. You know very well that Aunt will never make any decision that wouldn't be for your good. You should let her prove her worth.” Morris spoke up as he stared knowingly at me.
“Who succumbs to arranged marriages in this present generation?” Dante asked, tearing his eyes away from mine and looking around at every face in the dining, then squeezed his eyes shut in distress.
“You don't have to get so riled up, brother. You still need to get back fully on your feet before you start debating on these issues.” Larissa admonished as everyone noticed how very much he still needed to properly heal.
“I'll be glad if you sign the papers I had drawn up that still need your approval and signature before I assume the temporary position as the acting CEO while you're still recovering.” Morris jumped in at once. He is the best actor in the overall house.
“You can bring them up to my room later, I need to rest now.” Dante started pushing his seat back to leave the dining table.
“I will take over the company and every other business venture of yours while you're recuperating. As your wife, I know you understand that it is important I take up such an important role.” I said, to the surprise of everyone at the table.
Well, I already know Morris’ true intention, and I have no doubt that my husband–Dante, would be signing out all of his assets to the swindling bastard. I'd rather his plans fail than keep pretending that I haven't found my landing a long time ago. Everyone still thinks I am that stuttering little girl.
“What are you doing? You can't formulate a proper sentence, and you've spent your whole life behind the walls of your father's claustrophobic mansion! How do you intend to run a company that is in the line of men's business, let alone handle other businesses?” Larissa struck home.
I do want to believe she was looking out for her brother, but I don't trust anyone else in the room apart from myself at that moment after what I had witnessed when I arrived.
“Morris has a much versatile knowledge about every of Dante's businesses and hasn't disappointed me in the three years that you've been in bed, son. I must commend him for that.” Emma addressed, smiling satisfactorily at her nephew. “But I don't think there is any harm in giving her a try. Her confidence is reason enough.” She added admiringly.
“You want me to let this woman run my business in my absence? Do you have any idea how much risk I'd be taking? I could lose everything, Mother!”
“Or you could gain even more! Your cousin will assist her and I can assure you that she is more interesting than everyone thinks. Her ability to make such a speech is all the impression she has to make. She possesses this sense of resilience.”
Dante stood up and took a quick step toward the stairway, then stopped abruptly to glare at me across from where he stood, rage reddening his eyes.
“I give you thirty days to show me what you've got. If it turns out to be a bad idea, you not only lose rights to my assets, you walk out the door with nothing and pay for damages! If you're game, then I will prepare the contract and have you sign them to be effective immediately!” He said in one breath, his lips curved stubbornly.
“You've no idea what you've just gotten your sorry ass into, Pookie.” Larissa shook her head in disapproval.
“I'll gladly assist my sister-in-law in the best way that I can.” Morris met my eyes as I nodded in acceptance of the challenge.
“You'll definitely do well, my dear.”
“I bet my life, she would!”
Azalea's Pov “People say boys learn how to be men from their fathers. Would your son have wanted to learn from you, Mr. Mason?" I asked, my voice a bit louder than before. I was surprised by how easily the words came out despite my tension“Don't come closer! Don't talk about my son! You've no fuckin’ idea what you're saying!” He yelled, blindly throwing the huge rock he held. Anger surged through him like a wounded cat.Initially, I thought the rock was headed straight for me, but it struck the remnants of the ad screen hanging above the entrance. The impact caused the screen to crack even further, its supporting wire straining dangerously as it tilted unsteadily just inches from where he stood.Panicked, he turned to run, but his legs clipped together, sending him tumbling to the ground. The advertisement screen came crashing down beside him, arousing a collective gasp from the crowd. Reporters rushed toward the scene, their cameras flashing and shutters clicking furiously from eve
Azalea's Pov I woke up with a bright smile spreading across my face, but it diminished immediately when I noticed that I was alone in bed. I can't deny that last night was memorable; I don't think he'd already be awake and in regret for his behaviour last night, left when he woke up.He didn't have to run; this was his room, and he could have simply woken me up and sent me on my way. The thought bugged me as I left the room and closed it quietly before anyone saw me. This was my husband's room and it wouldn't be bad if anyone saw me coming out from his room, but I don't know for sure what they'd say and think in this house.I wasn't so lucky because Danielle chose that moment to come up to his room for his morning medication, but when she saw me lingering by Dante's door, she rolled her eyes and went downstairs again. I do wonder why she doesn't want to have a face-to-face encounter with me. She avoids me by all means, and I do wish her boyfriend would do the same instead of always t
DANTE'S POV “Let me go!” I thought I heard those words as my eyes fluttered open. My eyes did a quick scan of my room before my mind started working to remember what had led to this moment. The reason why Azalea was in my room, her head bent over an armchair, her mouth slightly opened so that she snored softly, drooling. There's nothing attractive about this woman, but she still looks beautiful and smart in her sleep. I would never admit that out loud because it'd sound so ridiculous coming from me. But she's…“No, Mama! No!” She suddenly jerked upward, then started kicking and throwing punches to the air as she continued screaming. “Let me go! Please!”It was her. It was her cries that had woken me up. I pushed myself up from my bed and pinned her down to the chair. I dodged a blow twice before my hands caught hers and pulled her to me. She fought for a while before she woke up, panting and pushing herself against me as if she were trying to escape from a monster. If only she knew
Azalea’s Pov What was I expecting from Dante? Maybe a big hug and kisses on my cheeks when the whole family barely knows me. They are all already blinded by Morris’s facade that they would never find fault in anything he did. Now I know better than to disclose everything I know to any member of the family, they might tell him about my suspicions and aid him in his plans to ruin me along with them. He's that evil and I will make them see him for who he is.Common sense told me to run far away from men like Dante, but the more I tried, the deeper thoughts of him registered in my mind. Was I expecting some kindness from such a man? Which man wakes up to find himself already married to some strange woman? If I should throw blame, it would be at my father who signed me off without second thoughts. And Leo, who is having the time of his life with Zara.I had no time to think about all of those as they swam through my head and made me drift from the task at hand many times, but I spent late
Dante's Pov I was sleeping and yet awake in my mind. I was being thrown into a pool full of water and strong hands were pushing my head deep into the water so that no matter how I fought to the surface, I sank deeper and choked on a large amount of water whenever I tried to scream. I was stronger than that, and I was struggling, but I still felt so weak and destabilized, maybe drugged so that my body felt limbless. Suddenly, the hand slipped, and I seized the opportunity to swiftly jerk off and surface before those merciless hands captured me again. I coughed and sprang up with a start to see two pairs of green eyes staring at me, almost popping out of their sockets from fear. Phyna, Larissa’s thirteen-year-old daughter, stood beside my bed, hugging her favourite teddy bear to her chest. Both hands protectively wrapped around it as if she was protecting it from a ghost she saw.One of my haunting nightmares since I woke up or sleep paralysis, whatever that was, felt surreal.“Hey,
Azalea’s Pov I stared at the tall building that is Dante's Empire and the advert playing out before my eyes in front of the building. When the driver opened the door, I took deep breaths before stepping down from the car and taking cautious steps forward.“Welcome to Dante's Empire ma'am. I am Gina Taylor, your personal assistant.” A lady about the same age as myself greeted me as I walked into the swinging glass doors. Our eyes met briefly and she smiled genuinely at me.“Thank you, Gina.” I returned her smile coolly and let her take my handbag while I finally found the courage to look up as she led me to the receptionist’s desk first.“I have your schedule ready and it's going to be a long day, but I can assure you that everyone here is very cooperative and friendly. You just have to trust the process and be yourself, especially when you have your first meeting with the board members by 10.” She went on explaining everything and introducing some of the employees to me. It wasn't a

AZALEA’S POVI wanted to scream! But then, I could only lift doubtful and sad eyes to my father, hoping that I still had time to spare, but he disappointed me with a disapproving frown.“You heard right. Go with him, Azea. Be a good wife.” My father proved to me that I was no longer needed.Hot tears formed in my eyes as visions of the past flipped through them. I remembered Leo's infidelity with my step-sister and made a quick decision to do exactly what I was told because there was no place for me in my father's house.I'm alone in this cruel world and the only person I have who can't betray me is myself. The earlier I understood that the better for me.With that one point, I made up my mind. I sniffed my tears back, dabbed my face with the back of my palm, slanted one last disdainful glance at Morgan Peyton, then turned to meet the grey-suit-man’s gaze with a quizzical frown. As if he could read my mind, his eyes lit up in understanding. He told me that I need not worry about anyth
AZALEA’S POV “You will marry him.” Helen’s sharp voice cut through my heart like a double-edged sword.I looked up at my father who was sitting beside her, eating as if his wife didn't just drop a bomb. The fact that he was sitting at ease, not bothered by Helen's declaration wasn't even a surprise, but it made my heart ache. Why can't she marry off her own daughter if she was desperately in need of money? After all, it was her obsession with money and her extravagant way of spending that has rendered my father's business useless and now the company is at the brink of bankruptcy. I had a lot to say and a lot of questions to ask, but all of them rested on the tip of my tongue until I washed them down with a glass of juice. “That man has been bedridden for three years. Nobody knows if he'd wake up. If Azalea marries him, she's as good as a widow!” Lionel, my stepbrother, interceded. For a brief moment, the clank of cutleries against plates ceased, and an agonizing silence issued befo
